Zyfira's POV
"Hi! I'm Zyfira! I want to join the Black Swan!" I said, trying to emit as much enthusiasm possible. The elves just stared at me, apparently shocked that I had heard of the Black Swan. Did they think I lived under a rock? Everyone knew who the Black Swan was, and it did not take much brainpower to figure out this was them. Especially after hearing the Neverseen complain about them. Biana, one of the people who had been there when I woke up after being kidnapped by the Neverseen (not a fun experience) spoke up,
"What?" Biana said. "You never mentioned that. How do you even know what the Black Swan is?" I rolled my eyes, feigning confidence.
"In case you forgot, I was kidnapped by the Neverseen. I heard them talk about you guys. You're their enemies, right? I want to fight the Neverseen. I want payback." I wanted to get revenge for what they had done. I hated the Neverseen. A boy with teal eyes and dark hair stepped forward. He looked about my age and was cute. Very cute. I almost blushed. Almost.
"You can't join the Black Swan," he said. Any thoughts of blushing evaporated. He was just like almost all other elves. Ignorant and prejudiced. Of course. I raised my eyebrows and looked him over. His clothes were very well styled. He was probably nobility. I spotted the crest on his tunic. Vacker. Definitely nobility. He looked annoyed. Good. That would make this a lot easier for me.
"Why not? You guys need all the help you can get, from what I've heard," I smirked. The boy flushed, and I saw his fists clench. He was getting angry. Then he said something I had not expected.
"Do you even have an ability?" I blushed. I hated it when people asked that. Especially, idiotic nobility. The boy sneered. I felt a surge of anger go through me. He was not going to win this fight. Everyone else stood quietly, watching. I stepped closer, so close I could count his eyelashes. He cleared his throat and stepped back. I had succeeded.
"No. But my Elvin powers are pretty powerful, and most elves forget about those." It was a weak argument, but the best I could do. He scoffed. I was ready to punch him. I had hoped someone would at least try and help me. At least no one was siding with the idiot. Someone said,
"Those can be useful, I saw people use them at Exillium," I turned. A grumpy looking boy with black hair and silver bangs had said it. The girl next to him nodded. She looked a lot like him, with long black hair that had silver tips. They must have been twins. I shot them a grateful smile. At least someone was agreeing with me. I was guessing that the boy might not be the most popular in this group, although Biana (who I think was his sister, they looked pretty similar) didn't look too happy with me. I turned back to the boy and smirked. He was looking enraged.
"Well, we need powerful people. People who will be useful. How could you help?" I had to stop myself from flinching. Those words stung, but I refused to let it show. Instead, I tried to appear confident. I put on a smile and concentrated. I levitated into the air. I didn't wobble, I was steady. I had practiced. Focusing on some vials sitting on a table, I levitated them into the air and moved them in a circle.
Magic, I thought. This is magic. Almost dropping the vials, I shook my head. Where had that thought come from? Magic didn't exist. This was science. Right? I put down the vials and grinned. Not my best, but I was saving the true extent of my power to show later.
"Why wouldn't I be useful?" I asked, pleased at the tomato-like shade that the boy's face now was.
"Let's see. You are Talentless, the Neverseen already managed to kidnap you, and you are still in the Healing Center." That hurt more than I cared to admit, but I kept smirking. I stared straight into his teal eyes, a tactic I knew worked well. My fists were so clenched that the knuckles were white. The boy was now furious.
"Oh, what am I forgetting?" he asked. I knew he was about to say something I would not like. "You are missing an arm. You're useless!" he said. A white-hot surge of fury coursed through me. Before I could think, I reached up and slapped him. I was so tired of nobility treating me like nothing because I was different. Even so, I knew I shouldn't have done that. I should have controlled my anger. I had put extra force into the slap with my abilities, and there was a red mark on the boy's face, already swelling. Looking down at him, I said,
"You are the worst person I have ever met. And I was kidnapped by the Neverseen! I thought the Black Swan was all about making all elves equal, with or without abilities. Apparently, I was wrong." And disappointed. I had been so hopeful when I heard there was a rebel group. People who wanted equality. People who wanted a change. The blonde girl who had searched my memories stepped forward, a note of panic in her voice.
"No, that is what we are about! We do want to fix that! Fitz was just angry, he wasn't thinking!" Sophie said, shooting a glare at him. so that was the boy's name. Sophie and Fitz must have some history based on how he looked away from her.
"I agree with Sophie," said Keefe, walking over to her. Sophie blushed. She definitely liked him. Good for her, Keefe had seemed pretty nice. He was the only one who had really talked to me here. "From what I've heard, the Neverseen have been running in circles around us. I think we need some new people." Everyone nodded in agreement. I almost sighed in relief.
"May I be included in this decision, perhaps?" Mr. Forkle stepped through the door. He smelled gross. "I trust your judgment, but I must first see the extent of Zyfira's powers." I smiled and bowed.
"With pleasure," I said, looking at Fitz as I said it. This was what I had been waiting for. I levitated into the air, and then floated a table over to where Fitz was still sitting on the ground. I dropped it on him, barely missing him. He screamed, a high pitched, girly sound. It was oddly satisfying. I then turned off the lights, and quickly floated over to Fitz, and took a marker out of my pocket, and drew on his face as quickly as I could. While I was drawing, I concentrated, moving the furniture to opposite spots of the room. I levitated to the other side of the room and turned the lights back on. Floating down, I curtsied. An ogre had come into the room, and she was laughing.
"I guess not all elves suck," she said, high fiving me. "Pretty boy had it coming! What else did I miss?"
"I slapped him." The ogre started laughing so hard that she had to leave.
"I guess you would be a good addition to the Black Swan." Mr. Forkle admitted. "Sophie, did you check her memories?" Sophie nodded. "Well then, Miss Zyfira, welcome to the Black Swan." I smiled and shook Mr. Forkle's hand. It was gross and wrinkly. My hand now smelled like feet.
"How is telekinesis and levitating going to help us?" Fitz asked. He had scooched out from under the table. Everyone turned to him and started giggling. Even Mr. Forkle was suppressing a smile.
"What?" Fitz scowled.
"You have something...on your face," a boy with strawberry blonde hair said. At this, everyone started laughing, even the grouchy silver-haired guy.
"A little present from me," I said and blew Fitz a kiss. It was fun messing with him. Fitz blushed and stomped over to a mirror. I had done well. The word IDIOT, in bright pink across his forehead, heart on his cheek, funny eyebrows, and a twirly mustache and goaty. His face turned a color similar to a very ripe strawberry. Fitz spluttered, at a loss for words. Everyone went back to the meeting, where I learned everyone's names (that I would probably forget in 5 seconds) and some stuff about the Black Swan. Fitz was silent.
We finally got to go home after about an hour (Mr. Forkle was quite the ranter). I followed Fitz. He reached for his pathfinder once we were outside and stopped. He looked at his hand and blushed. That was unexpected. I thought he would be mad. That had been my intention. I wanted to get him back for what he had said. I was very good at holding grudges. Shaking his head, he regained his angry face and leaped away. I sighed. Why did he have to be part of the Black Swan? The others were okay, but he was like almost every noble I had met. Ignorant, stupid, and judgy. I went out of my way to annoy people like that. But, maybe he wasn't that bad. He had certainly been smarter than I had guessed. He was definitely very cute. I shook my head and leaped home. I could not afford any distractions. Not when there was a job to complete.
