"Flora," Mr. Tanasko said when I raised my hand to read the poem, "Go ahead.
"The hours of light, shortingly bright," I read, my voice full of emotion, "Enlighten the world in the darkest of days. Bringing hope and pride, filling the hole deep inside, truly reconciling our fates." The class clapped and I smiled. "Thanks," I said, blushing slightly.
"Good job," Riley complimented, giving me a slight push on my arms.
"Thanks," I whispered in reply.
"Now, class, let's think about the deeper meaning of this poem," Mr. Tanasko taught, "Let's first go with the first line. 'The hours of light, shortingly bright.' What do you think this means class?" I raised my hand high up. "Yes, Flora?"
"I believe it shows how in the winter months the days get shorter, and there is less light. I think it also might signify how people lose hope, and how there are a few people left who have hope in bad times," I answered.
"Very good, now the second line, with going off of what Flora said, probably signifies these few people slowly enlightening and giving light and hope to the world when the world seems bleak, now who would like to decipher the last two lines of the poem? Hannah, go ahead," Mr. Tanasko said.
"I think it might mean like the people bring hope and pride to our world, and how they change our fates and thoughts for the better?" She said, questioning herself.
"Is that a question or a statement?" Mr. Tanasko asked.
"A statement," she answered, more confidently.
"That is correct, now for homework class, I want you to read through the poem on page 456, I know we're skipping around, and I want you to decipher each line, okay?" The bell rang, "Now go to your home rooms and have a nice rest of the day."
Everyone filed out of the classroom and I walked along with Riley. "Did you notice that heart on the corner of Mr. Tanasko's board?" Riley asked.
"No," I replied simply.
"Oh," he said, "Okay, well, anyway, how's it going with your crush?" He poked my arm teasingly.
"It's going well, I think I'm going to ask him out tomorrow, it's Friday, and Fridays are always good days to ask people out, if they reject you, you can get over it over the weekend, and if they say yes, you can celebrate over the weekend. And I think they'll say yes, I've noticed them staring lately," I smiled.
"That's good, and that also means I'll figure out who your crush is tomorrow, the way you talk about him, it makes him seem really cool," Riley said. His voice had a slight bit of sadness, but I ignored it. It was probably nothing.
"Yes, you will," I sighed. Little did he know, my crush was on him. I've known him forever, and I've caught him staring, I've stared, and we both know we're more than friends, so why not?
We opened up our lockers and grabbed our stuff and headed into home room to pack up. "Are we going over to your house after school today?" Riley asked.
"Yeah," I replied, slinging my backpack over my shoulder. The bell rang and I grabbed Riley's arm and pulled him outside.
"Aren't you worried that people are going to think we're a couple?" He asked, slightly blushing. Sometimes, he made it way too easy to tell.
"No," I laughed. We laughed and talked all the way home.
"Hi, mom," I greeted as I walked inside. I dropped my backpack on the ground and sat at the table with Riley.
"Hi, Flora, hi Riley," my mom welcomed, "And also, Riley your mom told me you have to go to a family dinner and said that Flora could come, you want to go, Flora?"
"Yeah," I replied, "I like your family, their big, open people."
"Yay!" Riley exclaimed, "Sometimes my family can be really boring, like when my grandpa goes on and on about his old fishing stories."
"I understand that, let's get to homework," I replied. We finished up our homework just when Riley's mom, Alaina, wanted us to go over so we could go to the dinner. We walked over to Riley's house, as he lived just next door and we drove off to the family dinner.
It was amazing, we played board games, hung out, laughed, and ate Riley's grandma's famous chocolate pie. And it was delicious. I went home happy and fell asleep with a wide grin on my face, I knew I had had the perfect day, and I didn't have a single regret. Tomorrow I would ask out Riley and he would hopefully say yes. He would, I believe he would. I knew he would.
A/N so yeah, as I'm getting into the swing of things with this book, it looks like dream chapters will be a little bit shorter, so yeah. And no, I did not forget people's names, I changed them, they'll be different in the dreams and in real life. So yeah! Please vote and comment if you liked it! :)-Piper
