Chapter 9: The Unseen Past
You, Bruce, Tony, and Kamala stood around the War Table as Tony began the meeting.
Tony: All right, guys. We've got work to do.
Kamala: Nice suit, by the way.
Bruce: How can we help?
Tony: JARVIS has found us a couple kf heat signatures that MIGHT be concentrations of Initiator Cores, but they're in completely different locations. Since time is of the essence, we're going to need to hit both locations simultaneously.
He then turned to you.
Tony: Bruce. You, Kamala, and Y/N need to search the outskirts of the Badlands while I investigate a city on the eastern seaboard. Hopefully one of these spots yield us those Initiator Cores.
Y/N: Two teams. Got it.
Everyone stood there for a moment before they looked at you. You looked at them confused.
Y/N: What?
Bruce: Nothing. It's just...
Tony: You almost look like your mom, kid.
You looked down at your uniform and sighed.
Y/N: I guess I do. Uh, we should head out. Like you said, time is of the essence.
Everyone nodded and you all headed to the hangar.
----------
You were once again on the Quinjet as it flew to another location. You had been picking up the signatures all over but you couldn't find them. Tony had radioed in and told you that he had no luck on his end which meant that it was up to your team to find them.
Tony: Okay kids, I am counting on you finding this second heat signature. Hopefully it yields us a bounty of Initiator Cores. It won't be long before AIM pinpoints the location of the Chimera. And without a base of operations...yeah well we won't have much of a chance. So, don't let me down. And...good luck?
Kamala: Um...that's a lot of pressure.
Tony: No. Yeah. Definitely.
Your team dropped out of the ship onto what felt like your hundredth location before you pulled on the collar of your coat. You activated your helmet and looked around for the signature.
Kamala: Okay. We can't let Mr. Stark down. JARVIS, where should we start?
JARVIS: The second heat signature has a few scattered spots surrounding a rather large center suggesting a significant concentration of potential Initiator Cores.
Y/N: That makes things a little easier. It should be all in one spot, then. Like a structure.
Kamala: Got it. Let's go.
You nodded as the two of you began your search with Hulk close behind. The sun was hot, the dirt was dusty, and yet you felt at ease. You used the system in both the helmet and the gauntlets to cool your body as you moved forward.
You had to find this signature before it was too late. You reached a small canyon which you began to swing across with your lines while Kamala followed close behind. Hulk opted to jump from wall to wall.
Kamala: Um, JARVIS?
JARVIS: Yes, Ms. Khan?
Kamala: Um...is....is it me? Or...is the Hulk not his bright green self?
You looked back at Hulk to see that she was right. While he was still tearing up the walls, he had a look on his face that just told you what you needed to know. Rather it was Hulk or Bruce, someone had guilt and maybe even a bit of depression going on.
JARVIS: It appears Dr. Banner has been struggling with the passing of our beloved Captain and the former Leviathan, Ms. Khan. According to his recorded memos, he returned to the Chimera determined to solve the events of A-Day. He instead grew frustrated with his perceived failings.
Kamala: Of course. Bruce feels guilty. Uh, Y/N?
Y/N: Yeah?
Kamala: Do, do you feel the same way?
Y/N: I would say that I feel guilty. I was only 12 when everything happened. I guess, I'm more angry at everyone. If I felt guilty about anything, it's not being able to save my sister in time.
You landed on a rock platform and looked down to see AIM doldiers below. Looks like you were at least in the right place.
Y/N: Take them down!
Hulk was the first one to jump down and start causing mayhem. You and Kamala followed as you leaped down and shot out a line. You pulled yourself to the ground where you slammed down a Keeper. You then threw a knife at a nearby drone before you ducked under a robot's fist. You kicked up and managed to kick off it's face plating which you then stabbed a knife into.
You grabbed a Keeper and threw him over your shoulder for Hulk to catch and throw further away. It was weird to think that Bruce and Hulk actually agreed on something. You understood why they felt guilty. You had talked to him and Tony and you knew that, above all else, they blamed themselves for what happened. You wondered if it was the same for the others.
You broke down the last bot and looked around before you noticed a half destroyed building nearby. It had smoke coming out of it. Using your helment, you saw that it was one of the signatures.
Y/N: No, no, no, no!
You began to sprint towards it when Kamala and Hulk noticed. They followed after you as you jumped down and found the Dreadbot completely burnt down.
Y/N: Damnit! They burnt out the core. They're trying to destroy has much as possible.
You walked over to the flaming pile of junk and tried to look at the cores but, they were done for.
JARVIS: Then we must hurry. I've updated your HUD with another core location.
Suddenly, there was a sound from the canyon. A man suddenly flew up with a gun and a jetpack which caused you to step away from the Dredbot.
Watchdog: Target spotted.
Watchdog: That's the Hulk! And, Leviathan?! We need back up here!
Two more flying men appeared and aimed their guns at you. You pulled out two knives while Kamala took her stance.
Kamala: I don't like the look of these guys. They aren't the normal AIM tin cans.
You and her both ducked out of the way of their gun fire before Hulk picked up a large chunk from the ground and threw it at them. They dodged it and continued to open fire. You peeked out from behind the Dreadbot and threw a knife which hit one of their wings which sent one guy blasting right back into the canyon below.
JARVIS: I believe they may be apart of a group who call themselves the Watchdogs. A radical anti-super hero organization.
Y/N: Those exist?! And they're working for AIM?
Two large men came from the side of the building and started heading your way. One had a massive shiled while the other had a massive gun. At least, it looked like a gun. Nope. That was fire. It's a flame thrower.
Y/N: Damnit. Why can't they have lame stuff?
You rolled out of the way of the flames and swung up to the second floor. You then threw two more knives which stabbed into the shield. You jumped down and joined Hulk in fighting the big boys while Kamala worked on getting rid of the two flyers.
You ran forward and stepped onto the Watchdog's shield which you then used to vault yourself over him and land behind him. Now with an opening, you kicked the man in the back of his knee before you delivered a spinning kick to the man's head. Your boot hit the helmet which seemed to have stunned him.
You then focused all of your targeting onto him and shot out the sharp points which stabbed into his armor and cut it to pieces. The man slowly stood up, now with no protection, and you delivered on last powerful punch to the throat which sent him falling to the ground.
You looked over to Hulk to see he simply picked his guy up and threw him threw a wall while Kamala was able to grab her guys and crush their jet packs before throwing them over the cliff.
Y/N: Hm. That works to, I guess.
You and Kamala, raggedly out of breath, found a moment to rest. Even Hulk turned back into Bruce who had his jacket handy so that he wasn't shirtless. He walked past you and Kamala and found a log on the edge of the canyon. You decided to join him and sat on his left.
The view would be beautiful, if you weren't so frustrated and tired. Kamala walked past both of you and looked out at the canyon.
Bruce: We've scavenged, every part of this desert by now. It's not going to be enough...
Bruce dropped his head while you looked over to Kamala. She seemed to be thinking about something. You deactiveted your helmet.
Kamala: Am I alone?
Bruce lifted his head to look at her. He then looked around before he looked at you. You just shrugged.
Bruce: What?
Kamala: Where are all the other Inhumans? Why aren't they fighting back?
Bruce: I don't...
You didn't have an answer either. She was right. Why weren't there Inhumans fighting for their freedom out there?
Kamala: I've seen the Resistance symbols, I've heard the rumors of a rebellion, but still NOTHING!
You stood up and walked over to her as she grew more frustrated. You ended up hugging her as she tried to calm down.
Kamala: I don't feel sick at all.
Y/N: I know. I don't either. Actually, I've never felt more alive.
Kamala: What if I'm wrong?
She ended up wrapping her arms around you as she buried her head in your chest. You knew what she was going through. You understood it well. Feeling alone in a world that just seemed to be pushing you down every chance it had. You understood her frustration.
Y/N: I know what that feels like. These powers...are a part of us. Me, you, even Bruce. And all I do know..it's a lot better if you just embrace that.
You slowly let go of Kamala as she looked up at you.
Y/N: Or something like that...I don't know, Bruce?!
Bruce: You hit the nail on the head, kid.
Kamala let go of you and looked at you and Bruce.
Kamala: My dad used to say the same thing.
Bruce: Well...he's a...smart guy.
Kamala smiled fondly.
Kamala: The best.
The three of you stood there for a moment, thinking about everything that has happened in the last few days. It's been a lot for everyone.
Bruce: We should...head back to the Chimera.
You and Kamala nodded as you sighed. No Core after all. As you began to walk away, however, there was a sudden portal behind the Dreadbot. A man walked out with a gun aimed at you which caused Kamala to raise her hands and you to pull out a knife.
Man: Stay where you are!
Bruce: Come on...man!
Bruce raised his hands and you slowly tucked the knife back into place. You slowly raised your hands as well.
Man: Ah...Two kids and an old guy.
Bruce: Old guy?
Man: Alright....Dr. Pym will see you now.
You and Bruce suddenly froze and looked at each other. Did he just say, Dr. Pym?
Bruce: Dr...Hank? Hank Pym?
Y/N: What the hell?
You and Bruce quickly walked over to where an Inhuman with blue skin opened up a portal. You stepped through it with Bruce where you found a man standing there, waiting for you. He looked serious. Bruce even folded his hands in front of himself.
Bruce: Hank.
Pym: Bruce.
Kamala finally walkes through as the portal closed behind her. The two men continued to look at each other while you and Kamala began to grow nervous.
Bruce: What are you doing out here?
Pym: Gonna ask you the same thing.
Silence. Terrifying silence. Then chuckling. Bruce and Hank broke and began to laugh while you let out a sigh of relief and Kamala rolled her eyes. The two men shared a hug which made you smile.
Bruce: Ah, it's good to see you man.
Pym: Good to see you.
The two separated before Bruce turned back to you and Kamala.
Bruce: Ah, Kamala. This is Dr. Hank Pym.
Kamala looked at you and you nodded. She then turned back to Hank.
Kamala: Ant-Man?!
Pym looked at Bruce awkwardly.
Pym: That...was another life.
His eyes then fell on you. He had to do a double take before he looked at your uniform and then at your face. He looked into you E/C eyes and smiled widely.
Pym: Y/N?
Y/N: Hello, Dr. It's been a while.
Pym suddenly hugged you tightly which caught you off guard. You slowly returned the gesture while looking at Bruce and Kamala. Pym let you go but held onto your shoulder before he looked at you from head to toe.
Pym: My, God! You've grown up so much! Look at you! You even have Leviathan gear!
Y/N: Uh, yeah.
Pym then let go of you when he suddenly thought of something.
Pym: Is...is Nadia...
You shook your head.
Bruce: She's not with us. I personally have no idea where she is.
Pym then turned to you.
Pym: Do you?
You shook your head again.
Y/N: Things, changed. I'm sorry.
Hank looked at you before he placed a hand on your shoulder.
Pym: It's alright. Follow me.
He lead the way as your team followed. You were then greeted by a wonderful sight.
Bruce: Ooh-'kay....So this is the heat signatures we've been searching for.
The entire wall was filled with Initiator Cores that shined a brilliant blue.
Pym: We've been salvaging weapons, robots, AIM tech...Anything we can to build up our defenses.
Bruce: Think you could spare some of these Initiator Cores? You know, help put a Helicarrier in need of some TLC?
Pym: I imagine we can make some arrangements.
You and Kamala looked at the Cores before something else caught her eye. She walked past the Cores and looked down below.
Kamala: What is this place?
Dozens of Inhumans wondered around the base of operations. It looked almost like a...
Pym: We call it...the Ant Hill.
And cue the laughter.
Pym: Not my idea. Think it was one of our anonymous hackers, "Tiny Dancer".
Kamala had the biggest smile on her face which in turn made you smile a bit.
Kamala: No way...So, so they're all...
Pym: Inhumans, yes. Many of them were prisoners at an AIM facility.
You placed a hand on her shoulder and smiled.
Y/N: I guess they were fighting back after all.
Kamala looked at you before she turned back in awe at the hideout. Pym walked over and placed a hand on her back.
Pym: Make yourself at home.
He then turned to you and Bruce.
Pym: We have a lot of catching up to do.
You nodded and patted Kamala's shoulder. You then followed Hank and Bruce down the steps and over to their own little War Table. Hank and Bruce began to talk about what they had been up to in the past five years as you looked around at their operations. Seems like they had their shit together.
Pym: Y/N?
You turned back to the two men.
Y/N: What's up?
Pym: Nothing just....I'm just curious, about something.
You were a bit nervous at his toen but you nodded.
Y/N: Ask away.
Pym: Earlier, when I asked about Nadia, you said things changed. I heard about your sister and I'm sorry I couldn't be there help you guys out.
You shook your head.
Y/N: Don't beat yourself up over it. I know that you went missing. It, it really affected Nadia.
Pym looked at you worried.
Pym: How is she? Nadia? Is she...
Y/N: Look, Hank, I'm going to be honest with you. I haven't really talked to Nadia in the last two years. I, haven't really talked to anyone in the last two years.
Pym: Why is that?
Unbeknownst to you, Kamala was just right around the corner talking to one of the other Inhumans. When she heard you, she silently listened.
Y/N: Well, after A-Day I ended up pushing others away. At first, things were fine with me and Nadia. You know that.
Pym: Yeah. You would visit when you could and you two actually ditched your first day of high-school together. I still don't approve of that, by the way.
You nodded. You remembered that day. Both of you wanted summer to last just one more day so you both skipped school and rode a train up to New York where you spent the day.
Y/N: Right. Well after you went missing, Nadia....she changed. She, she started to spiral out of control. She wanted answers and I couldn't blame her. I was confused to.
Bruce: Answers? You mean she was looking for Hank?
You nodded.
Y/N: She was determined to find you. She ended up doing these things that just put herself in danger. Breaking into AIM bases, stealing information, avoiding the cops....
Pym: Oh my god...
Y/N: It wasn't just her. I didn't stop her. I, I actually helped her.
You turned to Bruce.
Y/N: You asked me how I learned to fight. It was from her. Everything I know is from her. We were winning small battles against AIM. We called each other by code names to. She was the Wasp and I was Outlaw.
You slowly shook your head.
Y/N: One night, we had a close call. Too close for me. I wanted out. I wasn't about to make my sister suffer anymore than she already had. If I was to get caught, everyone would make the connection between me, her, and our mom. She already has it hard as it is. I wasn't going to make it any worse.
Y/N: I can't keep doing this, Nadia!
Nadia: You're the only one I have!
Y/N: I'm sorry.
Nadia: Please don't leave me to.
Y/N: Goodbye.
Y/N: I....I abandoned her. After a while she tried to contact me again, to apologize and tell me that she was done, but I never picked up the phone. She stayed in touch with Hailey but I haven't spoken to her since that night.
The three of you were silent as Kamala finally pieced it all together. The reason you never talked about Nadia or your past. You were ashamed of it.
Pym: She, she did all that?
Y/N: I'm sorry. It's my fault. I should've stopped her or at least stayed with her...
Pym: No. You were right to get out of there. This isn't your fight. At least, it wasn't. Nadia should've stepped back and saw how you felt about this.
Y/N: Even so, I let her. I completely cut her out of my life when she needed me. All she wanted was to find you. I can't hold that against her.
Bruce placed a hand on your shoulder.
Bruce: That's why you're helping Kamala. You want to make up for leaving Nadia behind.
You slowly nodded. It was true. You had failed Nadia. You let her on her own. You couldn't do that to Kamala. Not now, not ever.
Y/N: Kamala believes in this. Believes in the Avengers. Honestly, that's good enough for me. So yeah. I helped her find you. This is my fight now, to. Tarelton had something to do with my mom's death and I'm gling find out the truth then tear Tarelton a new one. That's the promise I made to myself.
Bruce and Hank smiled a bit while Kamala slowly placed a hand on her chest.
Y/N: I'm going to stay by Kamala's side. Not because of my guilt or because or my past. I'm staying by her side because it's the right thing to do. I'm going to help her see this through til the end because it's what she believes. That, is my promise to her.
Kamala smiled as she listened to your words. Everything you said was the truth. She was someone important to you and you couldn't let her down like you did Nadia. You were done running.
Y/N: Now, what do you need us to do?
