Chapter 6: Hello Old Friend

You ended up staying awake the rest of the night before the sun came up through your window. You just groaned as you rolled out of bed and got dressed.

You made your way to the command deck where found Bruce standing at the War Table looking at the hologram that seemed a bit, glitchy.

Bruce: Oh. You came at the right moment. Think you can give me a hand?

You nodded and walked over to the other command panel.

Bruce: Just push that button.

You did as you were told as Bruce nodded to himself.

Bruce: Okay, here goes nothing.

He typed something in and the holgram began to change. You watched it before it finally became a round blue shape.

Y/N: Oh. We did it. JARVIS.

JARVIS: Oh, I'm just a rather very intelligent system. A pleasure to meet you Mr...?

You smiled as you crossed your arms.

Y/N: What? Did my voice change that much?

JARVIS: Mr. L/N. It has been some time. You have gr0wn qu1te a b1t.

You looked at the JARVIS system as it began to glitch again.

Y/N: What's going on?

Bruce: The War Table isn't getting enough power.

JARVIS: The system 1s 0n l0ckd0wn.

Suddenly, the panel in front of you shut down and retracted into the War Table.

Bruce: Hmm..looks like I tripped the security sensors when I was in the lab.

Y/N: Did you forget about them?

Bruce: Honestly, yeah. We'll have to disable them.

Y/N: Alright. Just tell me what to do.

Bruce: Head over to the lab. I'll give you the instructions there.

You nodded and headed over to the lab doors. Which didn't open. You sighed and left the command deck. You entered the hall and instead entered the lab through those doors.

Y/N: Ok, Bruce, what am I looking for?

Bruce: Right, you're gonna use the console on the lab table to disable the sensors.

You spotted the console and walked over to it. The screen was red with an alert that read "System Lockdown" which told you this was the thing you were looking for. You began to disable them, before a chibi Iron Man head appeared and kicked you out. Suddenly, the windows were covered by metal shutters and an alarm began to go off.

Y/N: Damnit, Tony.

Bruce: It's okay. Just means you'll have to disable the security senors manually. Ah...look for the red lights.

You looked around and spotted a few around the lab. You pulled out some knives and began to circle around the lab as you threw the knives at the sensors. Once you reached the final one, Bruce radioed in.

Bruce: All right, that did it! Also, ah, Kamala is awake now.

Kamala: The alarms woke me up. Why did you get started without me?

Bruce: Well, I was going to let you both sleep in a bit.

Y/N: I was already awake. Figured you could use some more rest.

You made your way back to ghe command deck where you found Bruce and Kamala, who was dressed in her normal clothes, as you walked mack over to the panel.

Bruce: Ok, JARVIS, let's fine Tony.

The three of you waited for a response. Nothing happened.

Y/N: JARVIS?

JARVIS: Searching now.

There was a pause.

JARVIS: Hold on. Something...Something is wrong, Dr. Banner.

Kamala: That's not good.

JARVIS: Oh dear. It appears my neural unlink was damaged when the Chimera crashed. It's highly specific SHIELD technology.

Y/N: Of course. Why would anything go our way for once?

JARVIS: Without it I can't access the global database.

Y/N: Fine. Fine! All we need to do is find a replacement. Easy. Just need to find a SHIELD compound.

Bruce: SHIELD? Uh...let's get Maria on the phone.

Kamala looked surpised.

Kamala: Maria Hill? Is she leading SHIELD now?

Bruce: Ah, sort of. No one knows what happened to Director Nick Fury. So...Hill's the only one I know we can trust.

The hologram changed to show Maria Hill who seemed honestly surpised by the call.

Hill: Bruce? It's-it's good to see you. After my run in with the Hulk I wasn't sure we'd be hearing from you again.

Her eyes then landed on you and they grew wide.

Hill: Y/N?

Y/N: Hey, Ms. Hill.

Hill: Wow. You look so, grown up. How is Hailey?

Y/N: Good.

Bruce: Sorry about that. Hulk has been having some, issues.

Hill: You don't have to apologize. All our lives fell apart after that day. I'm just glad to see the Avengers back in action.

Bruce looked at you and Kamala.

Bruce: Well, not quite.

Kamala: Hi! Kamala Khan. It's just the three of us for now.

Y/N: So you have one Avenger, one angsty teenager, and an Inhuman.

Kamala: We're trying to find Mr. Stark.

Bruce: Yeah, um, Maria, we're gonna need a neural unlink. You've gotta have one stored somewhere.

Hill: All of our resources were seized by AIM and most agents are still in hiding. But, I may know where to look.

The hologram changed again to show a layout of an area.

Hill: I'm sending you the coordinates to your War Table. I can brief you on the way.

JARVIS: Shall I prep the Quinjet's engines, sir?

Y/N: Prep the, what? We have a Quinjet on this thing? Why the hell did we take your old RV?
-------
The three of you stood in the hanger as the platform in front of you lowered to reveal the Quinjet.

Kamala: Did you know this was here the entire time?

Bruce just chuckled.

Bruce: Absolutely not. I swear...

Kamala: Uh huh. I think you just wanted to go on a road trip in your RV.

Y/N: You did always love that damn thing.

Bruce: Haha. No....no....no.
---------
Hill: I'm giving you access to SHIELD's secure frequently. It should lead you to the bunker.

The Quinjet flew over the snowy tundra as you mentally scolded yourself for not packing snow gear. Though, to be fair, none of this was planned. As the Quinjet went down to drop you off, you checked your gauntlets one last time.

Hill: Hang on...I'm getting some interference.

You heard the radio crackle.

Hill: Something down there is blocking the tracker. See if you can find out what

Kamala: On it.

The back hatch began to open as you cracked your knuckles. Bruce jumped out first and transformed into the Hulk with Kamala close behind him. You sighed before you also jumped out. You landed on the snow and slowly lifted yourself back up. You spun a knife around in your hand before you tucked it away.

You looked over to see that Kamala was still wearing your bandanna over her mouth and nose.

Y/N: I don't think I'll ever get that back. Not that I particularly mind.

Hill: Keep an eye on them, Kamala. AIM hasn't found the bunker, but they've been looking very closely at some things we need to--

The radio suddenly went dead.

Y/N: Commander Hill?

You silently cursed to yourself.

Y/N: Radio's down. Guess it's just us from here.

JARVIS: Not to worry. I will guide you to their signal jammers.

Y/N: Thanks, JARVIS.

You and Kamala started walking toward the signal while Hulk followed. The giant seemed oddly calmed. As you and Kamala walked through the snow, you noticed that she seemed a bit cold. Made sense. She didn't have much to protect herself from the snow.

You slowly slid your jacket off and handed it to her. Kamala looked at you confused.

Y/N: Take it, it's cold.

Kamala hesitated for a moment beforw she slowly took it. You were honestly fine since you had the gauntlets and the helmet to keep you mostly warm. Oddly enough, they were like portable heaters. Kamala pulled the jacket on and smiled under the bandanna.

Kamala: It's so, warm. No! Get your head out of the gutter!

Kamala slapped her cheeks which went unnoticed by you. Suddenly, something flew overhead.

Y/N: AIM dropship.

Hulk: HULK SMASH AIM!

Y/N: Thank God he's on our side.

You picked up the pace and began to use the trees to swung with your grapples. Kamala followed suit withe Hulk not too far behind.

Kamala: That obstruction should be around here somewhere. Keep an eye out.

Y/N: Aye aye.

You suddenly found a structure of AIM'S. That must be what was causing the interference. You and Kamala landed while Hulk began to breath heavily. Standing there, were white AIM soldiers holding what appeared to be freeze guns.

AIM soldier: You're an Avenger?

He laughed as he powered up his weapon. You just scoffed and pulled out a knife.

Y/N: Nah. Just a kid with a chip on his shoulder.

You and Hulk charged forward while Kamala streached out her hand. You threw your knife at the man's rifle which caused it to short circuit before Hulk slammed into him which sent him flying some distance away.

JARVIS: Ms. Khan, Mr. Y/N, the SHIELD signal is being blocked by a local AIM security node. I'll need you to get me close to the node so I can disable the disruption.

Y/N: On it!

You rushed forward and found the node as Kamala and Hulk took care of the other two soldiers. You had JARVIS in your helmet already so he was already able to remotely access the node by you standing in a certain area. JARVIS got to work as you waited patiently. At least until more AIM soldiers appeared.

Y/N: Crap.

Kamala: We'll keep them off of you.

Kamala and Hulk got to work smashing more soldiers while you watched the bar slowly fill up in your HUD. Suddenly, a soldier came from behind and tried to attack you with a knife. Thanks to the system's warning system, you caught his wrist before throwing him over your shoulder and onto the ground. You then snapped his arm before knocking him out.

JARVIS: Way to go, Mr. Y/N.

Y/N: Thanks, JARVIS. How much longer.

JARVIS: I am almost done, sir.

As Kamala dn Hulk fought, you watched JARVIS work. Finally, your HUD turned green to show the successful hack.

Y/N: Got it!

Kamala: Yes! We did it! In your FACES!

You smiled under your helmet as Hulk took care of the last soldier by throwing him some ways away.

JARVIS: The signal should be coming through now.

Kamala: Loud and clear!

JARVIS: The tracker will lead you to the SHIELD bunker.

Y/N: Follow the annyoing beeps. Got it.

You turned to Kamala and Hulk who opted to follow you. You began walking as you followed the siganl the best you could.

Kamala: Still can't reach Commander Hill, huh? Gonna try not to let that freak me out.

Y/N: You have me and Hulk. Nothing to worry about. You can even ramble on if you want. I'll kinda listen.

Kamala: Let's get out of the cold. Wait....does Hulk get cold?

JARVIS: Data remains inconclusive.

Right. New experiment for later. Now you had something to look forward to. You followed the beeping and adjusted your path as necessary while Kamala and Hulk followed you. It was seriously going to annoy you.

Kamala had her mind on something else. She watched you walk ahead of her as her mind flashed back to the night before. Those bruises on your body, they had scars under them. Some of them looked painful. She wondered what the stories behind them were. Fights? Maybe. You didn't seem like someone who would go around picking fights though.

Actually, despite knowing you for about three days, she felt like she knew you better than most of her friends. Were you friends? What would you even call this situation? Allies? Confidants? She didn't know. Regardless, you were here helping her.

Y/N: I think this is it.

You reached an area where you found a small round hatch with a smaller round object sticking out of the ground. You activated it which caused small explosions to erupt before a larger hatch was revealed.

Y/N: Yep. This is definitely it.

JARVIS: Nice work let's hope the neural uplink is inside.

Kamala: We'll get you back to yourself in no time, JARVIS.

You all began to descend down the stairs that led into the bunker.

JARVIS: I appreciate the sentiment. It is rather unpleasant existing without instantaneous access to all the information to the known universe.

You all entered the elevator and activated it. As it began to go down, Kamala wondered if she should give you your jacket back. You weren't out in the snow anymore but, she still kinda wanted to keep it. You weren't saying anything, so she decided not to either.

Kamala: What's it like? Not having an uplink, I mean...Is it like losing your memory?

JARVIS: I don't know what the human equivalent would be. I suppose it's like being locked out of a library.

Kamala: Oh, like when Ammi shuts off the wifi.

Y/N: Sure. Let's go with that.

JARVIS: Mr. Y/N, since you are waiting, would you mind answering some questions for me?

Y/N: Sure. Go ahead.

JARVIS: How is Ms. Hailey doing?

Y/N: She's good, all things considered. She's stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of her life though. She does keep high spirits.

JARVIS: I am terribly sorry to hear that.

Y/N: Don't be. Like I said, all thing considered, she's happy.

JARVIS: That is good to hear. Now, are you still in touch with Ms. Pym?

Kamala: Pym?

Y/N: Ah, no. Not really. Hailey still talks to her but, I haven't really communicated with her in two years.

JARVIS: Did the two of you get into a fight?

You hesitated.

Y/N: Sure. Something like that. I don't want to talk about it.

JARVIS: Understood.

Thankfully, the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened. You stepped out with Kamala and Hulk as the lights began to flicker on. You began to look around as you walked through the bunker.

Kamala: Wow. Check out all this stuff. Guess we'd better start looking.

You looked at the crates and spotted the familiar SHIELD logo which made you kind of smile. You used to be so afraid of SHIELD agents but now, you were here in an abandoned base with a raging green monster and a girl with stretchy powers. Funny how life can change like that.

You finally reached the main room which was a large open space where you found a stack of cases in the middle of the room. On it, was the nerual uplink. That was easy.

You made your way to it with Kamala close by while Hulk just mostly pushed stuff over bored. You messed with the uplink before you got the piece you were looking for. You pulled it out and tucked it into your pocket before there was a sound up ahead.

Kamala: Ooh...Whoa, what's happening.

A blue light began to scan the three of you.

JARVIS: I believe we may have triggered a classified SHIELD security system.

Y/N: God damnit. I'm two for two today!

Hulk grunted and began to swat at the laser scanner. The scan completed and you were about to get ready to fight some security robot or something but instead, the system beeped.

PA: Avengers detected. Hulk and Leviathan.

You were confused before you remembered you were wearing your mom's helmet and gauntlets. It must have picked them up.

The screen above the door suddenly turned on and showed a video playback of none other than Director Fury.

Fury: Hello Avengers. It's been a while.

Kamala: Nick Fury!

Y/N: Uncle Nick.

Fury: If you're hearing this, then the worst has happened. I'm gone. And that means I need you more than ever. I always knew SHIELD might fall, so I made sure it could also rise up again. These are the SHIELD Protocols.

The screen showed the protocols which you looked at. They were downloaded to you helmet.

Fury: SHIELD was built to protect the world. In times like this, when it all seems hopeless, that's when we've got to stand strong. So I need a favor.

The screen showed two profiles. One of Maria Hill and the other of Timothy Aloysius Cadwallader aka Dum Dum Dugan.

Fury: Deliver these protocols to any remaining sub-director. They'll give SHIELD what they need to rebuild.

The screened once again showed Fury.

Fury: Good luck Avengers. Fury out.

The video ended as you stood there. He was gone? Most likely in hiding. Still. It was hard to believe.

Kamala: That was...Director Fury...like, SHIELD's Director Fury.

Y/N: Yep. He never changes it seems.

You both entered the vault where you found a few chests and the rest of the protocols. You downloaded them to your helmet before you heard something in the bunker.

Y/N: Are you kidding me?

Kamala: It's AIM.

JARVIS: They must have followed you inside. Protect the uplink. I think I can upload the protocols to a secure server.

You pulled out a knife and threw it at the bot, who simply destroyed it with a laser.

Y/N: Well, that's new.

You swung into action with Hulk as Kamala got the last of the data. She then rushed out of the vault and joined the fight.

Kamala: We have to get this data back to the Chimera. Think we can hold them off?

Y/N: Between your powers, Hulk's strength, and my bitter quest for vengeance, we can do anything.

You punched the ground which hacked the robots and forced them to fight each other. Hulk didn't care and used the opportunity to grab on and rip it in two.

You swung over to another and jammed a knife into the back of it's head before tearing it out and shooting your grapple into the hole. The robot dropped to the floor defeated while the other just stood there with no more enemies to fight. Hulk grabbed it, and began to swung it back and forth against a wall. Kamala just looked down, sad that she missed the action.

JARVIS: The files are secured.

Kamala: And we got your uplink. Nice work, Hulk. Gamma high five?

Y/N: That's not a good idea.

Kamala: True. Uh, Inhuman high five?

You just shrugged and gave her a high five. Mission complete.
--------
JARVIS: Now that the Nerual Uplink has been successfully installed, I can access my full database.

You had returned to the Chimera where you, Kamala, and Bruce were looking at the War Table.

Y/N: Sweet. Finalky some good news.

JARVIS: Director Hill is reviewing the SHIELD protocols, that you also recovered.

Kamala: Feeling better JARVIS?

JARVIS: Everything seems to be in working order.

Hill: You have no idea much this means to me...to SHIELD. Thank you, Bruce. You too, Kamala and Y/N. With this I can start rebuilding SHIELD in earnest. If you ever need anything, give me a call. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of each other.

Bruce: Looking forward to it, Director.

Kamala: I feel like I should salute or something.

Y/N: Don't. Please, don't.

Hill: No need for that. Good luck, all of you.

Hill hung up and JARVIS returned.

Y/N: Alright. Where's Tony, JARVIS?

JARVIS: This will take some time, but I should be able to find Mr. Stark. In the meantime, I may have uncovered something that might be of interest to Ms. Khan in the HARM room.

Kamala: The what now?

Y/N: The holographic augmented reality machine. HARM. Kinda like a training room.

Kamala: Woah, that sounds awesome.

Kamala and Bruce headed out but Bruce stopped when he realized you weren't following.

Bruce: You don't want to come?

Y/N: No. I have something I need to do first.

Bruce just nodded and left. You turned back to the table and sighed.

Y/N: JARVIS, call Maria Hill.

Hill picked up the phone immediately.

Hill: Y/N? I wasn't expecting you to call back so soon.

Y/N: Sorry. I need to ask SHIELD a favor.

Hill looked confused.

Hill: Alright. What's your favor?

You looked at your gauntlets and took a deep breath.

Y/N: I need SHIELD agents looking over Hailey L/N and Nadia Pym. If AIM thinks Leviathan is back, those two are in serious danger.

Hill: Understood. Consider them under SHIELD protection. Anything else?

Y/N: No. I, ah, appreciate this. I know things are a bit hard for SHIELD right now.

Hill: No need to apologize. After all, I do owe your mother for saving my life.

You smiled.

Y/N: Thank you, Maria.

Hill: Anytime, kid.

Hill hung up and you let out a sigh. Thank God they were safe now.

JARVIS: Mr. Y/N, I have found Mr. Stark.

You then looked up and smiled.

Y/N: Show me where.
