Chapter 5: Home Away From Home
Bruce: Uh, well, you can feel free to make it a little more...homey.
You and Kamala followed Bruce into the room where the ship's staff used to sleep back when the ship had a, you know, staff. Looked more like a storage room, really.
The beds were covered by red curtains for privacy and there were about 5 of them in there. Boxes were thrown on the floor randomly and there was still dust floating everywhere.
Kamala: Um...thanks.
Kamala walked past Bruce and sat down on the bench that was connected to a table. Bruce looked at you and you just shrugged. She had been like this since you left the AIM base.
Bruce: You good? I'm not used to you...being this quiet.
Kamala: Uh, yeah. It's nothing.
Bruce just stood there for a moment while Kamala looked at the ground. She looked like she was thinking hard about something.
Bruce: Ok....ok. Good, so...yeah.
Bruce awkwardly turned to leave as you watched him from your spot on the wall. He had one foot out the door before Kamala spoke up.
Kamala: What if it's real?
Bruce stopped and walked backwards into the room.
Bruce: Wha, sorry, what was that?
Kamala: The cure...
Kamala stood up while you stayed leaning against the doorframe.
Kamala: What if it's real? I mean, I mean it looks real, but what if I can be normal again?
Bruce: Um. It ah...It doesn't work like that.
Y/N: Not even close.
Kamala looked at the two of you confused.
Kamala: I mean you saw them. It looks like it really hurts, but...but maybe it's worth it?
Y/N: You really believe that?
Kamala just shrugged.
Kamala: I never really fit in before. I mean uh, Superheroes were my world, and I figured if I could just, uh, if I could just win that fanfiction competition, you know, then everything would just be....
She just shook her head.
Kamala: Doesn't matter. Now look at me. I'm a freak.
Bruce: Whoa, you're not a fre..
You pushed yourself off the doorframe when you saw that Kamala was now crying.
Y/N: What you did back there...Hey!
You walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder so that she would look at you.
Y/N: What you did back there, took a lot of guts. I mean look at everything you've done in the last two days. I mean, it's stupid, but it still took guts.
Bruce: And, not a lot of people could, you know, do that.
Kamala looked at you before she looked to the side.
Kamala: Good isn't a thing you are.
Bruce: What?
Kamala shook her head as you withdrew your hand.
Kamala: It's nothing, um, thank you. This room is really great.
Bruce: Okay.
Kamala: Or it will be, I mean...
Bruce: Okay. Yeah, hehe, it's kind of a, um...good.
Bruce gave a thumbs up as he turned to leave again.
Kamala: Yeah, thanks.
Bruce: Ok, I'll go...do other things.
Kamala: Ok, alright.
Bruce left you and Kamala in the room alone. The situation immediately became awkward since you were now officially in a girl's room. Now, this wasn't exactly new to you. You've been in Hailey's room and Kate's room as well as Nadia's. The only difference was that one was your sister, another was a glorified babysitter, and another was your friend.
Were you and Kamala friends at this point?
Kamala looked at her room with a bit more pep in her step which made you kinda smile. You also noticed that she still had your bandanna around her neck.
Kamala: Good job, Kamala. That wasn't awkward at all.
Y/N: Well, at least you have your own room on the Chimera.
Kamala: Is this really happening?
She suddenly became aware of your presence and quickly turned around.
Kamala: You're still here?
Y/N: Yep. I was hoping we could talk.
Kamala: Oh. O-Of course.
Was she, nervous? Dear god. You cleared your throat and walked around the room impressed. You and Molly actually used to stay here. It was much better when it was in the air though.
Y/N: So, about what happened at the Archive...I wanted to apologize for that. I didn't mean to start tearing up like that.
Kamala seemed confused at this sudden apology.
Kamala: Uh, are you apologizing for crying?
You shrugged.
Y/N: The situation we were in was already rough. I didn't want you to worry or for things to be awkward.
Kamala: No! No, no, no! You didn't make anything awkward. I get it. Really. Plus, you did just see me cry so...call it even?
You smiled a bit before you nodded.
Y/N: Yeah. Okay. We'll call it even, then.
Kamala smiled widely as she looked around the room.
Kamala: This place is kinda a mess. I think they were using it for storage or something.
You looked at the pile of boxes stacked up infront of the mirror.
Y/N: Probably. I can help you clean it up later if you want. I just gotta drop my stuff off in my room and take a long overdue shower.
Kamala: I would like that.
You smirked.
Y/N: For me to help you clean or for taking a shower?
Y/N: Or for me to help clean you up?
...
What the hell was that thought just now? No! Bad Y/N! At least it got Kamala to laugh. At least she was actually smiling again.
Kamala: Both. I'll take a showr in a bit after I at least dust this place up a bit. I'm really tired.
Y/N: I bet. We've had a rough two days. God. Two days. It feels more like months.
Kamala: You're telling me.
Kamala: But it wasn't so bad since I was with you.
....
Kamala: Stop thinking those kind of things, Kamala!
Y/N: Cool. Well, I'll leave you to it. If you need my help, I'll be in the room with the Serpant logo.
Y/N: Or if you need someone to talk to.
Kamala: Cool! I might stop by later and take you up on your offer.
Kamala: Unless you want to offer something else.
Both: STOP WITH THE BAD THOUGHTS!
You swiftly left the room with the door closing behind you. You then grabbed your head with a groan as you headed across the way to the room which had your mother's logo on it. Or, your logo? Technically you were using Leviathan's gear but, were you even Leviathan?
You placed your hand on the scanner and wait before it turned green. The door opened and you stepped into the familiar room. A wave of nostalgia hit you as you looked around.
It wasn't anything crazy. The bed had black and F/C blankets which seemed to be the color scheme of the room. The table was neatly organized and had a lap top on it as well as a framed photo. That photo of was you, Hailey, and your mother during a day out at the park. You all looked so happy.
The shelves held a spare helmet and small figurines of all of the Avengers which made you chuckle. Hailey was the one who managed to collect them all. Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Panther, and of course Leviathan. Everyone was there. You also noticed the SHIELD baseball cap that was was resting on the nightstand next to a miniature figure of Cap.
Tony had given it to your mom for her birthday one year as a joke and she kept it since she and Cap were close friends. Like, really close. Wait a second. Was Cap interested in your mom? That, was a weird thought.
Y/N: Not as weird as some of my other recent thoughts.
What was up with that? Whatever. Back to the room.
The bathroom was adjacent to the bed and you sighed in relieve when you realized that you could finally take a nice warm shower. At least, maybe. You should ask Bruce if there was running water on this thing.
You entered the bathroom and turned on the sink. While it looked brown at first, it became clear. You turned on the shower as well and it did the same thing.
Y/N: Just the rust after sitting here for five years.
You turned off the water and returned to the bedroom where you walked over to the laptop. You opened it and were greeted with the background which was a picture of all of the Avengers with You, Hailey, Nadia, and Kate. Everyone was smiling as you all made goofy faces.
You clicked the music tab and a lo-fi song began to play on the speakers. You pulled out your phone and connected it to the laptop and began to play your music instead. (Insert Favorite Band Here) began to play which you decided was good enough for now.
You pulled off your jacket and tossed it aside before you looked at your arms. You took off your shirt as well and looked at your body in the full length mirror. You were covered in bruises now. You winced at the bigger ones and poked at the smaller ones.
Y/N: Hailey would give me an hour long lecture right about now.
You just sighed and pulled off the collar from your neck before pulling off the gauntlets. It was kinda weird but, not having them on felt so bizarre. You rubbed your wrist before the door suddenly opened. You turned in surpise and found Kamala standing there with her fist raised and ready to knock. Right. You didn't lock the door.
Kamala: Uuuuh.....
You watched as her eyes traveled down from your face to your chest then down to your abs before her entire face grew red. She slowly looked back at your face and seemed to crash.
Y/N: Kamala?
Kamala: I-I-I-I....I'm so sorry!
She closed the door and you could hear her scream on the other side. You soon found your cheeks heating up before you shook your head and pulled your shirt back on. You then stepped out of your room and found Kamala still there.
Y/N: Sorry. I thought I locked the door.
Kamala: I'm sorry I was staring!
Kamala: Even though you are totally ripped....no! Bad Kamala!
You just awkwardly smiled.
Y/N: I don't mind if you stare at me........stop it already!
Y/N: Did you need something?
Kamala finally snapped out of her thoughts and remembered what she came here to do.
Kamala: R-Right. Um, I was going to ask if I could use your shower since my room, doesn't, have, one.
Kamala slowly of quieter as she slowly began to realize what she was asking for. She wanted to use your bathroom, to take a shower.
Y/N: Oh. Uh, yeah. Go ahead. I haven't used it yet so go nuts. I needed to go talk to Bruce anyway.
That was a complete and utter lie. You actually rather avoid Bruce right now but you weren't going to just sit in your room while Kamala was taking a shower. That would just be creepy.
Kamala: Cool! Yeah. I'll just, take that shower now.
You gave an awkward thumbs up as you moved out of the way to let Kamala in. She gave an equally awkward smile back before she entered the room with the door closed behind her. You let out another groan as you walked towards Bruce's room.
You knocked on the door before it opened and you walked in. Bruce was sitting at his table while looking at his laptop. He looked up when you entered. He closed the laptop and sat up.
Bruce: Y/N. What's, uh, what's up?
You just shrugged as you looked around his room. Looked more like a lab than anything if you were being honest.
Y/N: Nothing much. Kamala is using my room to take a shower so...
Bruce: Why doesn't she just use the staff showers?
Y/N: You know, I doubt she knows about them with this being her first night on the ship and all.
Bruce just nodded as you awkwardly stood there. Soon enough, the inevitable awkwardly silence filled the room.
Bruce: So...life. Good?
You gave a so so hand gesture.
Bruce: Ok. That's, good?
Y/N: Could be a lot worse. I mean, at least no one knows that I was Leviathan's kid so they can't restlessly bully me for something out of my control.
Bruce: That's, something. I think.
The silence returned. You looked out the window and saw that it was indeed getting dark now that the day was finally over. Man, talk about a rough day. Days? How long ago did you get off that bus?
Bruce: Look, I wanna apologize.
You looked back to the doctor as he took his glasses off and set them down on the table.
Bruce: I...we should have been there for you. And Hailey and Nadia and everyone. I'm, I'm sorry. You kids were our family and we just left you alone.
Looking at him now, you saw that he really meant it. He was sincerely sorry for not being there. The truth of the matter was, you weren't mad that they were gone. You were mad that they gave up.
Y/N: It's fine. In the end, we had each other. That's what mattered.
Until it didn't. You could still see the tears in Nadia's eyes from that night. It still killed you on the inside.
Bruce: Well for what it's worth, I really am sorry.
You just smiled.
Y/N: Thanks. Though if you want to make it up to us, you can start by finding Tony. That girl in my room didn't risk her life for the past two days for nothing.
Bruce nodded.
Bruce: About that. What's the, what's the deal with the two of you exactly? Are you guys friends from school or what's the story there.
You sighed as you rubbed the back of your neck.
Y/N: Honestly, I didn't know her a few days ago. I just helped her escape AIM and now, I. Am. Here.
Bruce looked at you baffled.
Bruce: You have changed, so much. You used to be afraid of people.
Y/N: Yeah well, this one is a bit different. She has stretchy arms and legs and stuff. She also has a heart of valor.
Bruce smiled.
Bruce: She does. I could've sworn you guys were closer though.
You just shrugged before there was a knock on the door. The door opened and Kamala stepped in with a new pair of lounge wear and semi wet hair.
Kamala: Hey, Bruce. Uh, sorry about, um...
Bruce: Don't worry about it.
Kamala: Any luck with finding "you know who"?
Bruce: No. We'll take a look tomorrow after everyone has had some rest.
Y/N: Sounds like a good idea. We're no use when we're all half asleep and running off of energy drinks.
Bruce looked at the two empty cans on his desk. Kamala looked at you and smiled.
Kamala: Thank you for letting me use your shower. I, uh, appreciate it.
You nodded.
Y/N: No problem. I guess I should take one to. I'm beyond exhausted. I might actually be able to sleep tonight.
Kamala and Bruce both looked at you confused.
Y/N: I have insomnia.
Kamala: That explains the bags under your eyes. Get some rest.
You smiled as you headed out the door.
Y/N: Thanks. I'll help you move that crap out in the morning. Night.
Bruce: Night.
Kamala: Good night.
You went to your room and made sure to lock it this time. You let out a sigh and headed to the bathroom. After a much deserved shower, you pulled on a F/C long sleeve and a pair of grey sweats before you climbed into the bed that once belonged to your mother. As you laid there, the events of the last two days.
Ever since you met this girl, your entire life has been turned upside down, flipped, thrown across the room, and put back together all in two days. Kamala Khan was really something else.
Y/N: I need to sleep.
So you closed your eyes as your music played softly in the room.
-----------
Y/N: I can't keep doing this, Nadia!
Nadia: You're the only one I have!
Y/N: I'm sorry.
Nadia: Please don't leave me to.
Y/N: Goodbye.
--------
Your eyes shot open to the dark room as you laid in bed covered in cold sweat.
Maybe you won't get sleep after all.
