Chapter 3: Breaking Down The Walls
Your entire body was sore beyond all belief as you slowly found yourself walking up. Your entire left arm felt numb from your over use of your "ability" and your head was still aching from your headache.
Then again, it was better than sleeping on a bus.
You groaned as you lifted a hand to your head before you realized that you weren't laying on a metal platform anymore. You were on a cot.
Your eyes shot up and you sat up before immediately laying back down due to the sudden rush. You grabbed your head and noticed the lack of gauntlets on your wrist and the presence of a HUD in your vision. That meant that someone took the Serpant Tounges and couldn't get the helmet off.
You slowly sat yourself up and scanned the room. Two other people were here. Wait a second, this was the Chimera. So one of those people had to be Kamala. You slowly sat up before you noticed the other person in the room. Your movement had finally caught his attention which made him turn around.
Bruce: You're awake. Good.
Y/N: Dr. Banner?
Bruce stood up and walked over to you.
Bruce: Take off that helmet.
Y/N: What?
Bruce: That helmet. It doesn't belong to you. Take it off.
You stood up and stared him down.
Y/N: No. It doesn't belong to you either. Where's Kamala?
Bruce looked at you confused for a moment before he pointed behind him. Kamala was in another cot, still asleep.
Bruce: Now, you're going to tell me how you got that case open before I bring back the other guy.
You looked at him before you disabled the helmet. Bruce's eyes went wide when he saw you face.
Bruce: Y/N...
Y/N: Where's the gauntlets? I'm guessing you took them.
Bruce returned to his desk and sat in his chair before Kamala began to stir. You looked over to her and found yourself suddenly relived that she was alright.
Y/N: Kamala.
Kamala: Hey...what...what are you doing?
Bruce pushed his chair over to her.
Bruce: Whoa, take it easy. It's ok. Just making sure that you don't die on me.
Bruce gently laid her back down before you and Kamala noticed the glass tube in his hand. It was filled with blood. Kamala suddenly realized it was hers and began to sit up.
Kamala: No, no, no...
Bruce: Okay....you need to...
You stepped forward in a way that you were blocking Bruce from Kamala as he scooted back to make more space.
Y/N: You can't just go around drawing people's blood.
Bruce: I know, I know...under normal circumstances, no, but, these aren't normal circumstances.
Kamala sat up and you helped her before she got a good look at the Bruce.
Kamala: Holy crap...Dr. Banner?
Bruce looked at her than at you before he took a deep breath.
Bruce: Ooh, no...Um.
He then closed his eyes and began to whisper to himself.
Bruce: Highway 9, highway 9 is about 20 miles to highway 9 if you take highway 9 you can take the bus stop then you probably could just do sorry...
He looked at the two of you while Kamala was just confused as you were.
Kamala: What are you talking about?
Y/N: What's Highway 9?
Bruce contiued to play with the blood sample as he tried to think of the right words to say.
Bruce: I've spent, a lot of time...um...
He made a flexing pose before raising his hands up to mimick a monster roaring.
Bruce: as the...as the big guy. So...
He shrugged and pushed his chair back to the table he was working on as you helped Kamala out of her cot.
Y/N: You feeling alright?
Kamala: Just a bit light headed. You?
Y/N: I've been through worse.
Kamala and you looked around the room as Bruce got to work at looking at Kamala's blood.
Kamala: How long have you been here?
Bruce: Ah...a few years, yeah...
He looked through the microscope and examined the blood before he sighed.
Bruce: That's remarkable.
Kamala: Yeah, so I've been told.
Bruce: So, this is why AIM bots chased some kids into the desert?
Y/N: To be fair, AIM did try to get me and my sister after A-Day. Thought we were threats before they saw Hailey in a wheelchair. But, not exactly why they followed us here.
Kamala sighed before she reached into her pocket.
Kamala: I kind of...stole something...off of AIM's server.
Kamala pulled out the flash drive while Bruce looked at you then back at her baffled.
Bruce: Hhhuh, what? Why? Why?
Kamala: I...I know, I know...Okay?
You looked at Bruce.
Y/N: Just, at least take a look. She's been through Hell trying to get this thing here.
Bruce looked at you before slowly reaching for the drive. He got it and placed it into his lap top where he began to play the video. You looked over his shoulder while Kamala looked at you with worried eyes. You had never seen the video before.
You watched the screen as Tarleton tried to turn off the center control that caused everything to happen.
Bruce: It's Tarleton.
Kamala: Yeah...
Suddenly, your mom and Cap rushed into the frame and took over. Cap told Tarlton something and Tarleton backed up to the doors. Your mom and Cap them got to work.
Bruce: Why are you shutting down the security protocols?
Suddenly, Tarleton sealed the doors closed with made your eyes grow wide in surpised as your mom and Cap were still in the room.
Y/N: What the hell?
Bruce: Did he just...
Kamala: Right? Right? That's what I thought.
You clenched your fists as you kept your eyes on the screen. Tarleton, left them to die? How could he?! The anger in your body began to get out of control when you finally learned that your mother was murdered by some coward.
Kamala: He totally locked Cap and Leviathan in the Reactor Room, and then he tried to jack the Chimera.
Bruce: Oh, that's...a bit of a stretch. We know the reactor was malfunctioning, so it's possible Cap asked him to shut down the security protocols and then lock the door?
You looked at him as your anger began to die down a little bit. Right. Cap and your mom were heroes. They could've done this for a reason. They could've told Tarleton...but, Tarleton would've lied.
Kamala: No, we've heard the A-Day testimony tons of times....
Y/N: Tarlton said he was on the command deck. Why would he lie? They barely survived the explosion.
Kamala: But this proves that Tarleton was nowhere near the Command Deck when the explosion happened. This proves he was lying.
Bruce gave it some thought be he turned back to Kamala.
Bruce: So...where's the rest of it?
Kamala: I got bumped off..the rest of the footage got corrupted.
Y/N: What?! We came all the way here to give someone a corrupted flashdrive?!
Kamala looked at you with guilt while you turned back to Bruce.
Bruce: Yeah..um..
Kamala clenched her fists.
Kamala: Look, what if the Avengers were set up? Okay? Tarleton, AIM, this so-called cure? It's..It's just not lining up!
Y/N: You sound like a damn conspiracy theorist, Kamala.
Kamala: But...But there's something wrong and I can feel it. Don't you?
You had to admit, she did have a point. But at the same time, maybe AIM was right. The Avengers just up and left and now the one you had here was just an emotional mess that could hardly contain the Hulk. Then again, you had seen what AIM does first hand. You couldn't just let this keep happening to those Inhumans who didn't do anything wrong.
Bruce: And here I thought you were just some nosy theives, trying to make off with Cap's shield and Leviathan's gear.
Kamala smiled a bit and you even felt some reassurance in his words. Bruce did always have that effect on you. His words seemed to always put you at ease when you were younger. At least that didn't change.
Kamala: So, I was thinking, couldn't Mr. Stark help us with this?
Y/N: Tony?
Kamala: I mean the whole mainframe was built on his technology. If anyone could get us in, it could be him, right?
You looked at Bruce who just sighed as he turned back to his desk. You recalled Tony and Bruce always being the two that bickered the most. Now that you were older, you realized it was because Tony saw Bruce as an equal in terms of intelligence but Tony always had that large personality.
Y/N: I know the two of you might not get along but....
Bruce: Yeah...
He clicked a pen and began to write on a small scrap of paper.
Bruce: There is a bus stop...off highway 9, you're going to keep heading West. And then when you do, it'll take you to some old friends who can help. Maria's good people, tell her I sent you. She might actually recognize Y/N.
Y/N: Are you kidding me?
Bruce: No. Just show here all of this.
Kamala: But you saw the video?! You know something's not right here.
Bruce: I'm sorry..I can't help you. I wish I could, but I can't.
Kamala looked at him in disbelief as you just stood there. You couldn't belive this.
Kamala: But you're Dr. Bruce Banner...You're one of the greatest minds of our time.
Bruce clicked the pen and turned towards Kamala.
Bruce: Greatest minds? Look at you! Look at what we did..you have no idea how dangerous that is.
You looked at Bruce before you slammed your fist on the table which caused both of them to look at you.
Y/N: Bruce god damn Banner. You're right. You're not one of the greats minds of our time. You're just a joke.
Kamala: Y/N...
Y/N: My mother died on that ship! You want to blame yourself for the Inhumans and her and Cap's death? Fine. The least you could do is get off your sorry ass and help us with this! You're an Avenger!
Bruce looked at you before he slowly lowered his head in shame.
Bruce: No. Not anymore.
You clenched your fist before you gave up. To hell with him. He wanted to turn his back on this, fine.
Kamala: Tarleton calls people like me Inhuman. He claims we're sick.
You looked up at Kamala.
Kamala: Violent. Demented. He says our disease will kill us in the end. Well I don't believe it.
She then took the drive with a nee found resolve.
Kamala: Guess we'll find Mr. Stark ourselves.
She looked at you with that determined face that she had when she decided that she was going to come here. You nodded and grabbed the gauntlets from Banner's desk before you both began to leave. You attached the gauntlets to your wrist before Bruce stopped you.
Bruce: Wait! Just...
You and Kamala reentered the room where you saw Bruce deep in thought. Finally, he stood up and sighed.
Bruce: You need a ride.
He walked past the two of you and toward the hanger. You and Kamala looked at each other before she smile. You couldn't help but smile yourself.
----------
Y/N: God. This somehow looks worse than when I was a kid.
You sat in one of the seats of the RV as Bruce drove the three of you toward your destination. You reached into the plastic bag and pulled out another gummy shark as you looked around. Kamala got dibs on the passenger seat and was sipping away on her Circle Q drink as Bruce listened to the weather report on the radio.
Kamala looked around before she spotted the Hulk bobble head on the dashboard. She reached out a poked it which made a squeaking sound. Hailey was the one who pit it there, actually. Of course no one could say no to her.
You ate another shark gummy as Kamala slurped the last of her drink. The annoying sound of her sucking on air through the ice and the straw was enough for Bruce to slowly turn toward her. Kamala shook the cup and you only heard ice. Bruce just shot an annoyed glance at Kamala as you sat in silence.
Bruce slowly turned back to the road as the radio began to turn to static and you ate the last gummy. You quietly slipped the plastic bag away on the seat as to not make any more unnecessary noise. Kamala reached over and began to change the radio before "I Don't Care" by Icona Pop began to play.
Kamala began to dance a bit before Bruce changed the radio station back to the static. Kamala looked at Bruce and you watched the two of them in anticipation. Kamala slowly lifted the straw to her lips and slurped loudly in Bruce's direction. Bruce closed his eyes briefly in frustration.
You were honestly impressed at how brave Kamala was sometimes. You just reached into your pocket and pulled out a (Insert Favorite Candy Bar Here) and began to snack on it.
Kamala: Are we there yet?
---------
You followed Bruce down the trail from where he parked the RV in the wooded area where Bruce claimed you would find something to help you find Tony.
Bruce: Tony stashed most of his stuff here when Stark Industries went under. And if anyone knows were Tony is, it's JARVIS.
Y/N: I remember him. Coolest AI ever.
Bruce: This trail should take us to the Archive's secret entrance.
Kamala: Cool. Well, it's a nice day for a hike.
You and Kamala began to walk ahead of Bruce as you enjoyed the fresh air and lack of dust in your lungs for the first time in what feels like ages.
Bruce: You two wesring those communication buds I gave you?
Kamala: Yeah. It's practically invisible.
Y/N: I'll have to get used to the feeling though.
You found Bruce walking alongside you as Kamala kept her steady pace ahead of you. You looked at Bruce as the two of you felt the awkward atmosphere.
Y/N: So why did you go back to Chimera?
Bruce: Well...I didn't. He did.
Y/N: And he scared away the Resistance.
Bruce nodded as Kamala enjoyed the nature around you. It was actually nice to see her having some kind of fun after the last two days of non stop fighting and running.
Bruce: So, how's your sister?
Y/N: Paralyzed from the waist down. We live with our aunt over in Jersey City. Not that you would visit or write.
Bruce looked at you and felt nothing but guilt. The Avengers disbanded so it was reasonable to assume that they had no contact with you over the last five years.
Bruce: I'm sorry. We should have been there for you.
Y/N: Not just me. Hailey and Nadia to. Hank is still missing, you know? Nadia is a constant nervous wreck who's scared that AIM will come and take her away to.
Bruce: Nadia? Do you still talk to her?
You slowly looked down before you shook your head.
Y/N: Not really. Hailey does. I....I have no excuse. At the end of the day, the three of us went through the same thing. I should be there for her, but I'm not.
Bruce placed a hand on your shoulder before he looked over to Kamala.
Bruce: What do you think your sister would say if she knew you traveled across the country with a girl?
You sniffled a laugh as you began to smile.
Y/N: She'll probably give me a lecture.
Bruce: Definitely. So you and this Kamala girl, are the two of you....
Kamala: I think I found something!
You and Bruce returned your attention to where Kamala was looking through a hole in the natural wall. She began to make her way through.
Kamala: Bit of a tight squeeze.
You followed her with Bruce right behind you. You and Kamala helped him through before the hole looked about ready to collapse.
Bruce: There's a clearing up ahead. The entrance should be there.
Kamala: Cool.
You all contiued on your way.
Kamala: So what does JARVIS actually look like?
Bruce: Like an outdated hard drive from 1998.
Kamala: Okay, new question. What does a 1998 hard drive look like?
Bruce: Oh god.
Y/N: Big, square, metal, you'll know it when you see it.
Suddenly, you were in that clearing Bruce was talking about. In the middle of it was a large, round metal object that looked like a vault. The area itself was beautiful with the waterfall, the fallen trees, and the wide open space. Bruce walked over the vault and sighed.
Bruce: Finally. This means we're getting close.
Bruce then bent over and tried to open the hatch.
Bruce: Oh boy.
He struggled for a moment before he gave up.
Bruce: It's wielded shut.
Y/N: Damnit.
You slowly tried to think before there was a low beeping noise. You acgivated your helmet and saw that it was somekind of warning system.
Y/N: The hell?
Suddenly, there was a sound of a energy rifle going off before a purple surge of enegry hit Burce who shouted out in pain. You and Kamala looked at him before you spotted an AIM agent on a nearby ridge.
AIM SNIPER: Got'em. Send in containment units.
Kamala kneeled down to Bruce while you pulled out two knives.
Kamala: Dr. Banner what do we do?!
You looked over to see that Bruce was moving as his shirt began to rip. That's not good. Or maybe it was, considering your circumstances at the moment. Bruce said something but you couldn't hear him.
Kamala: What?
Hulk: RUN!!
You grabbed Kamala's hand and dragged her along as Bruce transformed into the Hulk. You shot out a line and wrapped your arm around her waist before pulling the two of you up on a ridge. You both separated and looked down into the area where Hulk began to beat down on the robots.
Kamala: This is bad. This is bad. Crap.
AIM Agent: Surrender quietly! You have been warned!
More AIM agents jumped toward their inevitable doom as you watched.
Y/N: AIM's crawling all over the place. They must know about the archive.
Hulk contiued to beat down the soldiers below as you watched a jet appear from the trees. It began to hover.
AIM Agent: Returning to base! Returning to base!
Hulk just grabbed one of the arecked bots and threw it at the jet. You watched it soar through the sky before it hit the wing causing the jet to lose control.
AIM Agent: I'm hit!
You watched the jet go down as Hulk rushed forward.
Y/N: We should go to.
You and Kamala ran on the ridge while Hulk leaped below.
Kamala: I hope you brought a change of clothes.
Hulk didn't answer and neither did you.
Kamala: I can tell by your silence that you're not amused. That's ok. I don't think Bruce likes my jokes either.
Y/N: Neither do I.
Hulk: NO BRUCE!
Kamala: Okay okay. I won't mention the, uh...
Y/N: Just stop while you're ahead.
You and Kamala swung, jumped, and ran through the forest trying to keep up with Hulk as he charged on forward. Kamala looked at you.
Kamala: I will get you to laugh at one of my jokes. You don't smile much.
Y/N: Not much to smile about. Sorry.
Kamala: I will make you so happy that you'll cry tears of joy.
You just silently laughed to yourself.
Y/N: Sure. Whatever.
Hulk suddenly came across a lot of pipes embedded into the stone.
Hulk: AIM!
Kamala: Huh? Oh crap. This doesn't look tempary.
You both landed down in the small area where you scanned the pipes. Yep. AIM. You then saw a notification that showed a symbol which was of a fist. That was Hulk's symbol. That must mean he's close to youandhe'srightthere.
Hulk emerged and looked at you and Kamala. You subconsciously moved to protect her since your last meeting didn't really play out so well.
Kamala: Hey. We good?
Hulk just grunted and signaled for you all to keep going.
Kamala: Okay? We're cool. I guess.
Y/N: Well, he's not trying to rip us apart.
You both followed the green giant before you noticed a structure with the AIM logo. So they didn't just arrive.
Y/N: We've gotta find JARVIS and get out of here.
Hulk ran up to the doors and smash them which allowed the three of you to enter. You shot out a line to the ledge and swung yourself over the sewage on the floor while Kamala and Hulk just ran through it.
Kamala: Yuck. I'm having the longest shower when we're done here.
Y/N: Want some company.
You suddenly froze up and face planted when you realized what just came out of your mouth. You looked up to see that no one heard you, thankfully, so you just leaped back up and contiued to follow them.
What the hell was that? You've never just blurted things out like that before. You were a teenage boy so of course you thought things but what the hell, man?
You reached an area where were suddenly able to see the massive AIM structure that was built there.
Y/N: Guess AIM took over the place.
Kamala: Uh....Still think Mr. Stark's here?
Hulk simply responded with calm breaths. He looked at you as you scanned the buildings. This wasn't just something for temporary use. This was a full fledged lab building.
Hulk: Leviathan?
You looked up at him and deactiveted your helmet. Hulk looked at you before he slowly leaned in closer. You tensed up as he slowly reached a hand out toward you. You slowly closed your eyes and braced yourself, before you felt something on your head. You opened your eyes and found that Hulk was gently patting you.
Hulk: Y/N.
You slowly nodded.
Y/N: Y-Yeah. Y/N.
Hulk then turned back to the building and walked over to the edge of the cliff. He looked down and spotted a few AIM soldiers. Kamala and you looked at the building.
Y/N: I found some vent routes.
Kamala: We could head through the vents and take a look....
Hulk interrupted her and headed into action by running forward and jumping off the cliff.
Kamala: Yeah, that works.
Y/N: At least they'll keep him busy. Or, he'll keep them busy. Either way, we're on our own.
You and Kamala nodded befor you turned to go. You suddenly stopped and reached up to grab your bandanna.
Y/N: Wait a sec.
Kamala stopped and turned toward you as you took your bandanna off. Kamala stood still as you wrapped it around her nose and mouth before tying it in the back. Kamala could actually feel your breath against her cheeks as you finished.
Y/N: That way, AIM won't have any actual footage of you doing anything extremely illegal.
Kamala: T-Thanks.
You nodded as the two of you headed to the side of the building. You found a vent which Kamala streached her arms up to and pulled off. You and her then pulled yourselves through it with her in front and you close behind.
You crawled for some time before she finally found another vent. After making sure the coast was clear, she kicked the vent off and leaped out. You followed as the two of you looked around.
Y/N: This place must have a route somewhere.
Kamala: The original archive must be deeper inside the building. We'll keep looking.
The only response was death and destruction on the coms.
AIM PA: Perimeter breach. Security personnel is handling the situation.
You highly doubt it. You could actually hear everything getting destroyed down the hall. Whatever, you and Kamala had your own mission right now.
---------
You and Kamala kept looking around for, anything! It had been a while but you haven't found anything while Hulk has been tearing the place to pieces.
Tarleton: Dr. Banner, stop!
Your head popped up at the sound of Tarelton's voice.
Kamala: Tarleton is here?
Y/N: That bastard.
You finished hacking into the computer and looked at the list of documents.
Y/N: They're keeping something on the top floor. Meet us there?
Would Hulk understand that he has an objective? Whatever. You and Kamala headed that way anyway.
Kamala: It might be the Archive.
You and Kamala kept running as you mapped out the building with your helmet. You managed to hack some more information on the building itself but nothing about what was inside.
Y/N: There's a path up to through the research lab. You'll have to bust through the server room, big guy.
Suddenly, the PA sounded off again.
Tarleton: This isn't you. This monster isn't you, Doctor. He wouldn't want this research destroyed.
You rolled your eyes as you and Kamala kept making your way through the halls. It seems that everyone was focused on Hulk for the time being.
Suddenly, something popped up on your helmet. It was a file which simply read, Kraken. You opened it and saw that it was somekind of exoskeleton suit. That was odd. Whatever. You just needed to focus on your current mission.
You both enetered a lab and looked around. The map told you where you were.
Y/N: We're in something called a 'Terrigenesis Lab'.
Kamala: What is this?
You and Kamala walked over to the control panel which also looked down at the lab below. The doors opened and in came Hulk.
Kamala: You made it!
Kamala gave a wave while you looked at the system. You hacked into it and suddenly learn what this room was for.
Y/N: They were keeling Inhumans in here.
Kamala looked around the lab and noticed that there wasn't anyone else but Hulk in the room. You looked at her as you began to try and get whatever info you could from the system.
Kamala: What happened here?
You slowly stopped hacking and really looked at her. Her face was a mix of anger, frustration, horror, and sadness.
Kamala: Is this where they hurt them?
Y/N: Kamala...
Kamala: Hulk. I need you...to destroy this lab.
What?!
Y/N: Kamala, think this through. If he destorys this lab, I can't get any data. No data, no evidence.
Kamala: What data?! This is where they kept Inhumans and hurt them and who knows what!
Y/N: Be rational.
Kamala: Hulk, SMASH!
Y/N: No!
Suddenly, a mech suit dropped down from the roof and began to attack Hulk. You watched as the files all began to disappear from your HUD before they were gone completely. You hit the panel in frustration.
Y/N: Damnit!
You turned to Kamala who was watching the fight down below.
Y/N: Why would you do that? What if there was somekind of clue to a cure?!
Kamala: Tarleton is lying. There is no cure.
You just looked at her and saw the anger and hurt in her eyes. You knew what she was feeling. You knew exactly why she wanted this entire place to come crashing down. You got it. You looked back down to see that Hulk had finally defeated the mech and you sighed.
Y/N: Sorry. It's just, I'm a man of science. Knowledge is power and I want to know everything I can about what's going on. Next time, at least wait for me to get some kind of information before we destroy the place. Please?
Kamala looked at you and suddenly realized her mistake. Of course you would want to know more about all of this. You've been involved since day one without even realizing it. She gently place her hand over yours causing you to look at her.
Kamala: Ok. Next time, hack away. We'll wreck the place later.
Tarleton: Fine. I'll deal with the Hulk another way.
You and Kamala looked into yhe room where a large cylinder object began to descend from the roof. Green gas began to spray from it as you watched.
Y/N: That, can't be good.
Kamala: No, no....Get out of there. RUN!
The cylinder dropped and the machines around it began to erupt. Hulk ran out of the room while you and Kamala did the same. You both ran through the hall before you spotted another vent.
Y/N: Come on!
You threw a knife at the vent cover which caused it to break open as Kamala and you both pulled yourselves up into it. This one was a bit bigger and the two of you could actually stand up slightly.
Kamala: We have to find Hulk.
Y/N: Right.
