Chapter 2: Digging Up The Past

You slowly opened your eyes as the sunlight hit your face. You lifted up your hand to block it, only to realize you couldn't. You finally woke up enough to see thay you were now somewhere in the desert. The bus must be either close to or in Utah.

Y/N: I'm gonna hate this heat.

You looked over to see that Kamala was still asleep on your shoulder. She did have a rough night, after all. Hell. You had a rough night. What the hell even happened? It almost felt like a dream. You felt Kamala start to stir before she woke up.

Kamala: Are we there yet?

She rubbed her eyes as she looked out the window. Of course, you had the window seat so she had to look at you as well. She also noticed the dark stain on your shoulder from where she was laying her head.

Kamala: Omg. Did I drool?!

Y/N: Yep.

She groaned while you just laughed at her embarrassment.

Kamala: I'm so sorry.

You just waved it off. You looked out the window and wondered if the Resistance was even out here. Or, if there even was one.

Kamala: Wait. I just realized something.

You looked at her.

Kamala: I don't even know your name.

You just smiled.

Y/N: It's Y/N. Y/N L/N.

Kamala seemed to think about it before something clicked in her brain.

Kamala: Wait. That gauntlet and your experience. That name. Are you...

Y/N: The son of Leviathan. She was my mother.

Kamala: Woah. Wait. She had a son?

You just nodded before you turned back to the window.

Y/N: She didn't ever want to expose us to that world. Said that it was too dangerous and that some of her enemies would want to get me and my sister.

Kamala looked at the gauntlet still on your wrist. She looked down at her hands.

Kamala: I'm, uh, I'm sorry for your loss. She was a good woman.

Y/N: Yeah. And a damn good mother. I guess that's why I'm here.

Kamala: Yeah. Why are you helping me? You don't even know me.

You shrugged.

Y/N: I guess it's because I feel responsible for you. Like, I stepped in to help and now I'm invested. Gotta see this thing through. It's what my mom would have done.

The bus came to a stop and you realized that this was your destination. You and Kamala got off and you watched as the bus drove away. No turning back now. You turned around to look at the gas station the bus had left you at and sighed.

Y/N: It's so hot.

Kamala looked around as well. She noticed the payphone behind you and walked over to it. You watched her interested. She breathed heavily to calm her nerves as she searched her pockets for loose change. She took a deep breath before she dropped the money in and lifted up the phone. She placed it to her ear.

Vociemail: You have reached Yusuf Khan. Please leave a message and I will return your call.

There was a beep.

Kamala: Hey Abu! So, I took your advice. I'm with Nakia and the others on the retreat. Can you believe that there's no cell service out here? I...I had to hike all the way up to this pay phone, to make this phone call.

Despite her cheery voice, you could see that she was unsure about everything. She collected herself and contiued.

Kamala: Anyway, um, you're right. We're having a blast.

Kamala took a deep breath again and closed her eyes as she placed a hand on the glass.

Kamala: I'll be home late Sunday. Promise I'll be good! Love you more.

She hung up and let out a sigh of distress. She took a deep breath and found what courage she could before she stepped out and joined you.

Y/N: You alright?

Kamala: Yeah. Uh, do you need to call someone? I have some more coins...

Y/N: I'm good. My aunt and sister are kinda used to me running off for days on end. Uh, and I don't really have many friends. The two I have are busy. Gib is with his family and my other friend is, uh, busy.

Kamala just nodded her head as she looked toward the desert. You looked at it as well.

Y/N: Alright. Let's get this started.
---------
In a long desert canyon, you and Kamala walked under the sun to find what might not even be there. You hopped off the edge of a short ridge while Kamala sat for a brief moment. You were both exhausted from your long journey.

Kamala pushed herself forward and you caught her before you set her down on her feet. You both continued your search.

Kamala: All the conspiracy theories online point to this canyon as the Resistance home base. They're the only chance we got.

Y/N: But if this is circling around online, would AIM have already found it?

Kamala: I hope not.

You both reached a fallen tree which you and Kamala climbed over.

Kamala: At least we know someone has been this way.

You both dropped down into the small river below which got your clothes wet. Again.

Kamala: Just like me to travel across the country chasing rumors. But crazy rumors are all I got.

Y/N: I'll just take your word for it.

You both splashed around before you reached a dry bank. You both walked up as a familiar looking drone suddenly flew by.

Kamala: AIM's out here too?! We have to hurry.

You both quicken the pace as you hiked through the canyon. You came across a torn down fence and smiled. Some kind of sign of civilization. You were so busy mentally celebrating, that you failed to realize the slop before you. You slipped and slid down the small mound before Kamala did the same. Now, you were both covered in mud.

Y/N: I just can't stay clean.

You both looked at each other and smiled. You both then looked up and saw something that gave you hope. A  small communications tower in front of a cement structure. Kamala pulled out her phone and looked at the picture of her stick note.

Kamala: The Resistance! This is where they are. It's gotta be.

Y/N: Let's look around.

There was a beeping noise before more drones showed up.

Y/N: No...AIM found them first.

You and Kamala readied yourselves as bots and drones appeared around you. So much for a peaceful hike. You picked up some rocks and grapple up near the flying drones as Kamala swiftly wiped out the ground bots. You used your rocks to break the flying drones before you dropped back down and sighed.

Y/N: Ok. So, if the Resistance isn't here, where did they go?

Kamala: Maybe they got out before..

You and Kamala looked into the structure to see that there was nothing there. Just a large piled of rocks blocking the entrance. It was caved in. Kamala looked at it, defeated.

Y/N: Mh. Come on. Let's just, I dunno, keep looking ahead.

Kamala: Yeah. Let's do that.

You both left the structure and began to hike your way through the canyon again. You eventually reached a point where it was all ledges and deep drops.

Kamala: Just need to get up high and see where we are.

Y/N: Well come on, Stretchy.

Kamala snorted at the nickname but started climbing up the ridges regardless. You followed with your grapple and swung along with her as you both began to travel through the canyon. Suddenly, you both landed on a formation that couldn't handle the weight. It began to crumble beneath you forcing the two of you to run. Using the running start, you and Kamala jumped as high as you could to try and make it to the next area. Kamala reached her arms while you shot out a grapple.

Kamala looked back at the gap and smiled.

Kamala: Whooooaahhh!

She gasped for breath.

Kamala: I can't believe...I just did that..

Y/N: I'm gonna die at this rate.

You and Kamala continued forward.

Kamala: My parents would freak if they saw me out here. I mean, I'm freaking out. Though, I'm sure Abu wouldn't be too happy with me being with a boy.

Y/N: Then we shouldn't tell him.

You jumped up and grabbed a ledge before pulling yourself up. You reached down and offered a hand to Kamala who just looked at you. She used her powers to reach up and pull herself up.

Y/N: Must be nice.

You both turned around and your jaw dropped.

Kamala: No way.

Y/N: The Chimera.

There, in the valley, was the abandoned Chinera Helicarrier from all those years ago. Large crates were on the flight deck and there were coverings all over.

Kamala: We found them!

Kamala looked at the Helicarrier in awe and excitement.

Kamala: I can't believe we found them!

She hugged you suddenly before letting go and running ahead. You just shook your head with a smile as you followed. As you did, you slowly came to a stop. You looked over to the Helicarrier with a fading smile.

The Avengers were there. Your former family. The same one that went and about you and Hailey when you needed them most. Now here you were with a stranger trying to find them to stop, something. You just shook your head and ran to catch up with Kamala who was already a ways away.

You had a running start which you used to leap over a large gap where Kamala was waiting for you. You looked over to see the only way across the gap was to somehow make it to a crane. You and Kamala looked at each other before you shrugged. You took a few steps back before you ran forward and leaped off the edge. You shot out a line and swung yourself over.

You landed on the metal which echoed through the canyon. You slowly stood up and turned towards Kamala.

Y/N: Come on! It should be stable!

Kamala nodded and mirrored your actions before she leaped off the edge. You watched as she stretched her arm out to grab the ledge before she pulled herself up. You both turned toward the Helicarrier and walked across the cane before you reached another gap.

Y/N: Can't ever be simple, can it?

You looked around before you found another crane holding up a tank of somekind. Looks like that was your way across.

Kamala: Alright. We can make that.

Y/N: Yeah. Totally.

This time, Kamala went first. She ran forward and leaped across the gap and grabbed a hold of the ladder on the side of the tank. She climbed up as you took a few steps back. You took a deep breath and ran forward. You took the leap and grabbed the ladder as well.

The only difference was, the tank began to move. Suddenly, the crane began to swing around causing Kamala to fall off the tank. You caught her as the tank swung down before it came to a stop. You helped Kamala up and she climbed back to the top. You followed soon after.

You both stood there before one of the wires dropped. You and Kamala looked at each other.

Kamala: Uh oh...

The tank shook again and the two of you broke off into a sprint. You and Kamala both leaped off the tank just as it fell to the canyon below. You shot out a line which managed to stick to the Helicarrier while Kamala grabbed the edge. You both pulled yourselves up and you hunched over with your hands on your knees as you tried to catch your breath.

Y/N: Oh, God. Why?

Kamala: Woo! Made it!

You slowly stood back up before you looked around. This place was a lot duster than before. You both began to walk in as you looked around.

Kamala: The Resistance has to be here.

Y/N: Yeah. Let's just look around for now.
----------
After some exploring, you found yourself reminiscencing of your time here when you were a child. Things seemed simple back then. The good guys were good and the bad guys were bad.

You and Kamala walked down a hall before you reached a room where you saw something surprising.

Kamala: Lights! Somebody's home.

Y/N: It seems so.

You looked around before you found a hatch. You recalled exploring these with Hailey when you were younger. You kneeled down and pulled on the handle before you turned it. You then grabbed it and slid it open you and Kamala both peeked in but she had accidentally kicked a power drill on the floor.

The drill ended up falling down a very deep shaft that led to nothing but darkness.

Kamala: Uh....oops.

Y/N: This leads to the reactor room. Up is probably the way to go.

Kamala: I agree.

You looked to your right and spotted a ladder. You had learned your lesson in letting Kamala climb first so you instead started your climb with Kamala behind you. You both began to climb as you found even more lights.

Kamala: Holy crap we must be close!

Maybe. But if that was true, were was everyone. Even if they were keeping a low profile, there should be guards or something, right? You reached another hatch which you pushed open. You climbed up and reached down to help Kamala. Once the two of you were on your feet, you looked around.

You found a set of large windows which told you all you needed to know. You and Kamala moved to them and looked down at the command below. The War Table was covered by a white sheet and red sheets were randomly hung everywhere.

Kamala: Holy crap! The command deck!

You watched her do a little dance out of excitement before she ran ahead. You just sighed and followed.

Kamala: Where is everyone?

Y/N: Hiding?

You walked over to the stairs where you and Kamala looked at one of the red sheets. It had a white logo on it that you had seen before at the stone structure and on the outside if the Helicarrier.

Kamala: This is it! This is the Resistance headquarters!

You looked down at the cot below it. Looks like people were at least sleeping here. The question was, how long ago? You both reached the command deck where Kamala looked around.

Kamala: You think those AIM drones outside scared everyone away?

Y/N: It's likely.

You both walked down to the war table. You remembered being so impressed by this thing when you were a kid. At least, back when things still impressed you. Seems that it became more and more rare as the days went on.

You walked over to the monitor that wasn't covered by the sheet and looked at it. You reached out and messed with it before you saw the blue lights turn on under the sheet.

Kamala: Maybe they hid in the crew quarters and got locked out thanks to the flaky power?

Y/N: Even then, the Chimera has safety measures to prevent that.

Suddenly, the war table turned off and flashed red. The screen displayed "Insufficient Power".

Kamala: Figures.

Across the room, another hatch was revealed as it began to spark. You and Kamala looked at each other. That wouldn't hurt you, would it?

Kamala: Gotta get the power back on.

You guessed. You and her walked over to the hatched which you opened once again. You slid it open and Kamala crawled through the space. You followed as well and soon enough, you were looking at a level with a red light. The only issue was that it was over a large hole.

Y/N: There. I think you can reach it.

Kamala: On it.

She stretched out her hand and grabbed the handle. She tried to pull it but it wasn't enough. You shot out a line and began to pull as well. You and Kamala ended up hanging onto the lever as the light turned green.

Kamala: Got it!

Y/N: Yes!

You both then tried to pull it down, when you remembered the large hole under you. The handle began to move as you tried to stop it.

Y/N: No, no, no, no!

Kamala: No!

The handle broke and the two of you went falling down the shaft. Out of instinct, you grabbed Kamala and held onto her as you took the full force of the fall. You landed on a pile of junk before you and Kamala rolled to a stop.

You let go of Kamala and groaned.

Y/N: Ugh...ow. Nice one, Y/N.

You slowly pushed yourself up and looked over to Kamala who was getting back to her feet.

Y/N: You alright?

Kamala: I think so.

There was suddenly a noise that made both of you gasp. Yeah. This place wasn't stable at all.

Y/N: We should go.

Kamala nodded and followed you and you made your way through a wrecked part of the ship. You reached a hole in the wall where it looked like someone, or something, had burst through. You climbed through before you noticed something shining in the sunlight up ahead.

Kamala: Ah! Something ELSE scared everyone away then...

Y/N: You see that?

Kamala climbed through the hole as well and looked ahead.

Kamala: What's that?

You didn't know but, you were going to find out. You walked forward and found a set of stairs that would lead down to whatever it was that was shining. You jumped down with Kamala right there with you. You looked up and wondered if you were just imaging things.

Kamala: Wow. Is that what I think it is?

You hoped so. You both walked towards it. Sure enough, you weren't going crazy. There, among the dust and the wreck, was Cap's shield. You stood in place while Kamala walked forward towards the shield.

Kamala: Whoa!

She picked up the shield as something else caught your eye. To your left, you found a crate where there was a case with a familiar logo on it. You walked towards it and looked at the case before you picked it up.

Kamala: How is it still here?

Kamala slowly looked at the shield before she slid her hand through the leather straps and tried it on. Meanwhile, you examined the case before you found a fingerprint scanner. You decided to try your luck and held your thumb against it.

To your surprise, the light turned green and the case was unlocked. Slowly, you opened it up and looked inside.

Y/N: No way.

Inside were two gauntlets. They looked much newer than your prototype ones and these weren't fake. These were real. These were your mother's. You pulled them out and looked at them before you recalled your mother. You took off your gauntlet and instead replaced it with the new ones before you noticed a collar inside the case as well.

You grabbed it and looked at it before you realized what it was. You placed it on your neck and locked it in place before it activated. Your head was suddenly covered by a black helmet and you were greeted with a HUD of your own that immediately scanned the area. You also spotted a pouch of throwing knives inside. You picked them up and tucked them into your belt.

Kamala: It's so light!

You turned to see that she was messing with the shield. She suddenly struck a pose and smiled fondly as your helmet deactivated. Slowly, her smile began to fade as she remembered the loss of Cap and Leviathan.

Kamala: You were right, Cap. Terrigen was powerful stuff.

Y/N: They knew that. Even my mom.

Kamala turned to you and saw the gauntlets on your wrists.

Kamala: Are those...

Y/N: My mom's. She was working on these before everything happened.

Suddenly the two of you were interrupted by a low rumbling from the pipe in front of you. You both looked down the pipe confused. It sounded like someone was running toward you.

Kamala: Who-Who's there?

You activated your helmet as the rumbling got closer. You could see a silhouette in the darkness as it got closer and closer.

Y/N: Kamala...

Kamala: Oh no.

Suddenly, from the pipe emerged a large figure. As if today couldn't get worse. The Hulk had to come along. He landed in front of you both and let out a loud, and frankly intimidating, roar. You and Kamala did the most logical thing, and sprinted away.

Kamala: What the..! Don't hurt us!

Y/N: Focus on running!

You suddenly reached a place where there was a large gap and the two of you jumped for it. Before you could even make it to the other platform, Hulk jumped across and grabbed the side which made it tilt. You and Kamala landed and kept running. Fire erupted around you as you and Kamala leaped to another platform that Hulk had beat you to again. Kamala held up the shield to protect her from the flames as you ran.

You reached the final platform where you found an open door. That was your way out. You and Kamala ran for it, only for Hulk to burst through the wall.

Y/N: How did he even get there?!

You pushed Kamala through the open door and you followed before you both went back to full on sprinting for your lives. At least, you tried to but you and Kamala ended up tripping as Hulk tried to reached through the door.

Kamala: Dr. Banner! I know you're in there! Please wake up! Now!

Y/N: Uncle Bruce!

Hulk didn't listen. He instead broke through the doorway and you grabbed Kamala as you ran. Kamala held up the shield over her head as the low roof began to break and spark. You finally made it out of the area and kept running.

Kamala: Just...listen!! DOCTOR BANNER!!

Y/N: He won't listen! We just need to get out of here!

You and Kamala leaped up to a higher platform where you began to run. There! You saw an opening. Now to get there...

Hulk: ROAR!

Hulk suddenly emerged from below. You and Kamala flew up before Kamala spun midair and you shot out a line. Kamala landed on the shield and ended up riding it down to another platform as you swung down to meet her.

Kamala: Whooooaahhh! OW! Ruuun...go go go!

You both leaped across another gap when Hulk threw a large piece of the wall at you. Kamala held up the shield as you grabbed her waist and shot out a line. The metal object hit the two of you but you managed to swing both of you into another room.

You both landed hard but you didn't have time to focus on the pain. You and Kamala quickly got up to hide.

Kamala: Dr. Banner! Can we talk about this?

Y/N: It's me, Uncle Bruce!

Hulk just let out another roar as you ran away.

Kamala: Look, I need your help, alright?

You ended up in a dead end where you and Kamala ended up hiding behind the shield.

Y/N: No, no, no, what are you doing, what are you doing?!

Hulk pushed the last obstacle away and you were now face to face with him.

Kamala: Leave me alone!

She then did something that surpised, scared, and confused you. She punched Hulk. In the chest. It did nothing. You looked at her like she was mad. Who in their right mind would ever punch Hulk?

Hulk just looked at his chest before he returned his gaze back to you and Kamala.

Kamala: I didn't mean to, i didn't mean to, i didn't mean to...

Hulk just reached out and grabbed the shield from her. You grabbed Kamala and threw yourself over her with your back to the Hulk as he leaned forward.

Hulk: ROAR!!!

Your grip on Kamala tightened as the Hulk screamed at you. He stopped and began to leave as you held the still shaking Kamala.

Kamala: Please don't kill me, please don't kill me, please don't kill me, please don't...

Y/N: It's alright. He's gone.

You slowly let go of her as she began to sit up with heavy breathing. She tried to calm herself down as you placed both hands on her shoulder to check her over for injuries. She seemed fine besides the injuries she had already. You helped her to her feet as she finally gathered her nerves.

Kamala: We gotta get out of here.

You nodded in agreement. You began to lead the way but she grabbed your shirt. You deactivated your helmet and looked back to her.

Kamala: Please, go slow.

Y/N: Alright.

You slowly began to make your way through the hall with Kamala holding onto your jacket.

Y/N: There's got to be a way back on the deck.
---------
You finally made it through the hanger bay and you were glad that Kamala had returned to her usual state. At least, enough to make jokes. You reached the deck and looked around at the deserted place.

Kamala: No sign of the Resistance anywhere. Hulk must've scared them away.

Y/N: I don't doubt them. I was scared of Hulk when I was 12, and I'm scared of him now.

Kamala: Better find a way off this thing.

You agreed. You reached a part where the deck was lower and the two of you jumped down.

Kamala: What am I supposed to do with this footage now?

Y/N: I dunno. Actually, I don't even think I've seen it before.

Kamala looked at you a bit concerned. You were Leviathan's son. She didn't know if she wanted to show you how your mom died. Before she could say anything, there were noises on the deck. AIM bots. You and Kamala looked up to see three bots land in front of you.

Y/N: Did they follow us here?

Kamala: That's so creepy.

You activated your helmet as you and Kamala leaped into action. You pulled out one of the throwing knives and threw it at one of the bots. It embedded itself right between its eyes and the machine's head erupted. Kamala swiftly destroyed the other two with a punch.

More bots jumped down and you leaped forward and delivered a punch to one of them. While you swung around and threw your knives as well as fought, Kamala used her powers to beat down whatever bots she could.

Y/N: If AIM didn't want our heads before, they certainly do now.

Kamala: We're getting out of here. With the drive!

You defeated the last robot before the Helicarrier began to shake. You needed to go. You and Kamala both headed toward the deck where you swung up with your line. Kamala followed but she was instead grabbed by bots. You moves to help but the bots grabbed you as well.

Y/N: Ah! Let go!

Kamala: Let go of me!

The bots threw both of you forward causing you to hit the ground. You and Kamala got to your feet as the robots began to surrond you. This wasn't something you could just run from. No. This was now a fight you had to finish.

You looked at your hand as the F/C sparks began to cover it. At the same time, you and Kamala let out a cry. You punched the ground while Kamala did something extraordinary. She grew to three times her size as your electricity temporarily powered down the bots.

Kamala looked at herself and began to laugh.

Kamala: This is new! I'm...giant!

You swung out of the way as Kamala began to swing wildly at the reinforcements. You smirked under your helmet as you began to throw more knives. You landed and grabbed one of the bots which you used your electricity on. The bots' eyes turned to F/C and began to attack the other robots as you leaped back into the action.

You froze when you heard a familiar roar and looked over to see that Hulk was now on the deck.

Y/N: Aw, shit.

Kamala: Hulk?! No no no!

But, to your surprise, Hulk was on your side. He grabbed a nearby robot and used it to smash it into another.

Kamala: He's not after us?

Y/N: We can work with that!

You threw a knife at a drove flying over head before you attached one to your grapple hook. You then swung it around as it cut through the robots surrounding you as you avoided hitting Kamala or Hulk. Kamala grew back to her normal size and kept fighting.

You turned to see that Kamala went to grow again. You couldn't let her do all the work. You powered up your hand and slammed it to the ground again but this time, you felt extremely dizzy. Your vision began to blur as you reached your power limit.

Y/N: No...

You fell over as did Kamala for over using her power. You were both overwhelmed. You watched as three bots began to move to Kamala who your covered with your body.

Y/N: I'm, sorry...

Your vision began to fade to black as Hulk landed in front of you and smashed the robots. That was the last thing you saw before you were out.
