Chapter 11: Kamala's Mistake
Day finally broke and you woke up feeling well rested. Your hand still hurts but beside that, you felt great. Maybe a bit sore.
The Ant Hill was once again back to being in the bustle and hustle as everyone worked to do whatever they could to help. You were with Maddy Cho, the resident scientist, looking over the Inhuman samples you had retrieved from yesterday's mission.
Kamala, however, was running around talking to anyone who needed it. She wasn't smart enough to keep up with your or Cho and she didn't want to interrupt Bruce and Hank's conversation. Tony was also still on his way with the Chimera.
She ended up walking through the halls, if you could call it that, where her mind began to wonder. Your words rang through her mind again for what felt like the hundredth time.
Y/N: I'm going to stay by Kamala's side. Not because of my guilt or because or my past. I'm staying by her side because it's the right thing to do. I'm going to help her see this through til the end because it's what she believes. That, is my promise to her.
She once again found herself blushing. No matter how many times she thought about it, it never failed to motivate her. You got involved in this because of her and you stood by her even now. She couldn't help but smile at the thought of it.
The more time she spent with you, the more she wanted to know you better. She knew the basic stuff like your name and past, but she still had so much more to learn. She found herself thinking of ways to get the two of you alone away from Tony and Bruce just so she could talk to you. She even joked with herself that she just wanted you to herself.
Oddly enough, she never felt like that with anyone else. Not Bruno, not her Abu, not even her brother. Just you.
Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted when she heard flames echo through the Ant Hill. She followed the noise and found the training area.
Kamala: Fire powers....that's intense.
She opened up the gate door and entered the area. There, she found a boy a bit older than you near the test dummies. He had an injured leg and was being held up by a crutch as he threw a small fireball at the target.
He shouted as Kamala walked over to him. He sounded, frustrated. He contiued to fire off the fireballs one after another. Finally, he realized one final fireball which sent him falling backwards to the ground. Kamala walked over to him concerned.
Kamala: Hey, you okay?
Dante: Ugh....fine.
He groaned as he grabbed his crutch. He gave up instead and just sat there. Kamala looked at the smoking dummy and smiled.
Kamala: Cool powers. I mean, they look awesome.
She then turned around.
Kamala: Um..I'm a, Poly-morph. I think. It's cool like, I stretch and stuff. Um, still working on not making it look silly but....
Dante: You're Inhuman.
Kamala smiled.
Kamala: Yeah.
She stood there for a moment before she sat next to the boy on the floor.
Kamala: So, what's your name?
Dante: Dante.
Kamala: Kamala.
She looked at his leg and noticed it was in a makeshift splint.
Kamala: What happened?
Dante: I broke my leg during the escape.
Kamala: Hm. Well, at least you made it out, right?
Dante nodded but he wasn't very happy.
Dante: My mom came back for me. Yeah, I made it out. And she was captured.
Kamala sat there for a moment trying to think of what to say.
Kamala: Well, the Avengers are on their way in a couple days, ok? They're going to take back the prison and your mom will be fin.....
Dante: A couple days....WHY WON'T ANYONE LISTEN TO ME?! I overheard Dr. Pym. They're moving the prisoners to a new location.
Kamala was silent as Dante grabbed his crutch and started to get back to his feet.
Y/N: Then trust me when I say, we will break everyone out. And we will do it together. You have my word. But if we rush these things, someone is going to get hurt or killed. This isn't just some game.
Kamala: Well...they'll fine that too.
Dante: No they won't! Your Avengers will be too late!
Dante struggled to get back up. Kamala got to her feet and started to help him.
Kamala: Here, let me help you....
Dante pushed her away from him.
Dante: No.
He then looked at her.
Dante: Don't you get it? We're Inhuman. No one cares for us.
Dante turned back to the target and grunted as he threw another fireball. Kamala took a step back as Dante contiued his practice.
Kamala: That's not true.
Kamala shook her head as Dante ignored her. Kamala then walked out of the training area and shook her hands.
Kamala: I need to talk to Bruce and Y/N. We could do something. I gotta convince them to go back to the prison.
She eventually found you talking to Hank and Bruce about the samples. Hank was working on his robot while you and Bruce compared notes.
Y/N: The compound created by the gas was powerful. It bonds to the host.
Bruce: We'll need to look into more.
Hank nodded in agreement as he finished tinkering with his robot.
Hank: Roy, I need you to send one of your disposable chassis to the Chemria with supplies. And Roy, Stealth will be key.
Roy: Right away, Doctor.
The robot lowered its head as it transfered its signal to another body.
Bruce: I'm just going to say it. It's just...genius.
Y/N: Yeah.
Kamala approached the three of you nervous.
Kamala: Hey, got a sec?
You and Bruce looked at each other.
Bruce: Yeah....yeah, what's up?
You and Bruce walked over to her as she took a deep breath.
Kamala: AIM is moving the prisoners to a new location...soon.
Y/N: Okay...
Pym: You've been talking to Dante.
You looked at Hank confused. The hell is Dante?
Bruce: I'm sorry. Who...who's Dante?
Y/N: I have the same question.
Hank: Dante is one of our Inhuman survivors. We were able to get him out but his mother got caught. Our escape caused AIM to shore up security.
Bruce: Gotcha.
So, the prison was under heavy guard. That could be a problem. At least Tony was on his way. With the four of you, you might just stand a chance.
Kamala: Look, we got to help them.
Bruce: Oh, that's not a good idea.
Kamala: What?
Y/N: I have to agree.
Kamala: But there's Inhumans in there. Dante's mom is still there. We can't just sit around and do nothing.
Bruce: No no no....I know...I know. We won't just sit around and do nothing. Roy just left with the energy cores.
Y/N: Tony will be here in less than a day. We....need to wait.
Kamala looked at you with hurt and confusion. It hurt you, but you weren't about to let her get everyone to jump head first into certain death.
Kamala: I don't understand. We have the Hulk? And together we can...
Hank: Kamala...the Resistance has been trying to infiltrate that base for months. Getting out was far easier than getting in. And we had help! From the ground it's walls are nearly impenetrable.
Kamala looked to Bruce and you.
Kamala: You saw what we did back there. I can help!
Bruce: But it's too risky.
Kamala grew frustrated as she shook her head.
Kamala: You don't understand! You're not Inhuman!
Y/N: Kamala!
She realized what she said and grew quiet. Bruce stood there for a moment thinking of his own demons. Kamala stepped forward but Bruce up a hand.
Bruce: You're not ready.
Kamala looked at him in disbelief before she turned to you.
Kamala: Y/N?
You stayed silent as you looked at the ground. You couldn't look at her.
Y/N: I'm sorry. We wait.
Kamala felt her heart break. You said you trusted her. You said that you were going to stay by her side. Why aren't you sidi g with her. Didn't you think she was ready? That you and Bruce were ready?
Did you not believe in her?
-------------
It was during the night time when everyone was soundly asleep. Well, almost everyone.
Kamala made a choice. As she looked at your sleeping figure across from her bed, she sighed.
Kamala: I'm sorry but I can't just do nothing.
Kamala sneaked away from your shared space and began to tiptoe through the Ant Hill. She was going to ask Theo to teleport her to the prison. She was going to save everyone. She was going to prove she was ready.
As she walked, she made sure not to wake anyone up. If someone found out what she was doing, she would be put under surveillance for sure.
Well, she wasn't as good as she thought.
Roy: Kamala Khan.
Kamala: Ah!
She quickly covered her mouth and looked at the half robot leaning against a pillar.
Roy: You are not asleep.
Kamala: True.
Roy: I shall inform Dr. Hank Pym.
Kamala: Uh...could you not?
Roy:......Alright. Good evening.
That worked? Well, better not to question it, she guessed. Kamala contiued forward, now less sneaky, and walked past the other Roys cleaning the base. She soon found herself where Theo was and she smiled.
Theo looked up from his comic confused.
Theo: Hey, Kamala. You still up this late?
Kamala: Yeah I...was going lie but I'm going to the prison. They wouldn't be moving the prisoners if it wasn't for us.
Theo: Respect. Right this way.
Kamala: Really?
Theo just smiled.
Theo: I have a good feeling about you. But you're going to need this. It's not safe out there.
He handed her a stone of somekind and Kamala smiled.
Kamala: Thanks, Theo.
Theo opened a portal and Kamala ran right through. She appeared in a desert and looked around. She nodded as she started forward.
Kamala: Those Inhumans need our help. If this works, then all is forgiven. I hope.
Her mind flashed back to you. You said that you trust her and that she trusts you. You told her that everyone would be able to free the prisoners all together. She couldn't wait. She wanted to trust you, but she was now betraying your trust in her by doing this. The thought alone killed her.
But if she succeeded, she would be okay.
As she reached the end of the cliff, she saw the massive compound below here. Suddenly, an airship flew over head and spotted her.
Kamala: Woah! Okay, Kamala. This is the real thing. Just keep it together.
She took a deep breath and leaped forward toward the front gates.
She made it to the massive doors and smiled at herself.
Kamala: Just get these open and I'm in.
She started to open the gates with her large hands when she heard the alarm sound off. Suddenly, several bots were summoned behind her which made her turn around.
Kamala: Can we just, pretend that you didn't see me?
AIM Bot: Avenger spotted.
The bots charged forward at her which she greeted with a massive high five. Three of the bots went flying back but two more still charged forward. She leaped up and smashed one just as another three appeared.
She landed as the Elite Syntizoid fired a lazer. Kamala narrowly avoided it and instead swung a fist at it. She then grabbed one and smashed it into the last one.
Kamala: I still got this.
She shook herself off as rain began to pour down. Suddenly, even more bots and soldiers appeared all around her.
Kamala: These guys just keep coming.
Now there were two large mechs in the mix. Kamala readied herself and grew in size. She embiggened and started to lay waste on the everything around her.
-------
Back at the base, you slowly woke up and groaned. Damn insomnia. You sat up and rubbed your eyes before you looked over to Kamala.
You felt back for not siding with her but you knew that if you were to attack the prison now, things would fall apart quickly. You stood up and stretched before you noticed Kamala's cot looked empty. Curious, you walked over to it and lifted the cover.
Kamala was gone.
Y/N: What the hell?
???: What the hell indeed.
You turned around and found an AIM soldier standing there. You grabbed a nearby knife but the AIM soldier lifted up a hand.
AIM Soldier: Trust me, kid. You don't want to do that. If we're going to save your little girlfriend, you need me in one piece.
What the hell was this woman talking about?
---------
Kamala stood over the wreckage of her rampage as he began to feel light headed. She shrunk down to her original size and tried to catch her breath.
Kamala: Easy..oh man.
Suddenly, a bright light shined in her. The airship flew up and kept her in their sights as Kamala raised her hand to block out the light.
Kamala: Okay, I'm in over my head.
Suddenly, even more bots surrounded her. Not just simple androids or soldiers but mechs and dreadnoughts. As they moved in, Kamala grew in size once more. However, she immediately felt her head start to spin. Her vision blured as she slowly shrunk back down.
Kamala: Oh no. Oh no, not now. Not...
Her vision slowly turned to black as she fell over, and passed out.
-----------
It was an hour later when Kamala came to. She heard a distorted voice but couldn't recognize it. She lifted her head and instead found herself strapped to a table.
Monica: No no no! The terms of our agreement were clear. We give you the cure and you control the media!
Senator: And we've more than held up our end....but where's this cure of yours? Children are being ripped away from their families. People missing? Even my resources have their limits. The public needs answers.
Tarleton: I'm giving you something better.
Tarleton flew down from the darkness and revealed just how bad he has gotten. For starters, his chair looked a lot more powerful.
Tarleton: The launch of the Adaptoids will be the perfect distraction.
The senator clear his throat as he looked at Tarleton over the hologram.
Senator: And after that? Without a cure, words like TERRORISM start to get thrown around.
Tarleton: Oh, it will work, Senator. I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Rappaccini's abilities.
The Senator looked at the doctor who smiled smugly before he hung up the call. Monica's smile vanished and Tarleton turned to her.
Tarleton: How much of that, was a lie?
Monica: The effect of the gas is still only temporary.
Tarleton took a sharp intake of air as he clenched his fists.
Monica: And without the formula to keep them alive, well, the gas...
Tarleton: Kills them. This isn't working!
Monica looked at her boss.
Monica: That gas gave us the Adaptoids. My formula kept you alive! Now if I could isolated how it manifests in the Inhumans I know I can reverse the effects! There are more opportunities here.
Tarleton: We have enough powers harvested to build your army. It's time to cut our losses. Shut it down.
Tarleton flew away without another word which left Monica frustrated. Kamala turned her head to look at her as she activated her monitor. Holographic files appeared and Kamala watched her sort through them.
She saw a symbol that looked like someone bound by somekind of machine as well as a satellite. "Ambosia" is what it read. It was at that time that Kamala tried to sit up. The noise alerted Monica who turned around and spotted Kamala trying to escape. Monica then began to walk towards her.
Kamala: No! No no no! Please!
Monica ignored her pleas and turned up the IV drops going into Kamala's arm. Almost instantly, Kamala passed back out.
