It was getting later in the evening, and you were getting extremely worried. Steve was supposed to be home by now. He was supposed to be home an hour ago. You knew he got into fights, but did he get really hurt this time? Hell, did the worst happen? He was a fragile little thing with a heart too big for his small frame.
But you loved him all the same. Even when he came home beaten, bruised, and bleeding. He would always say 'I had him on the ropes'. Of course you knew he never did, but the confidence and bravery Steve had made you smile. So did his smile, his eyes, and his humor. You just loved him, alright?
Back to the worrying. Bucky was also supposed to be coming home soon. He usually got home later than you and Steve. Speak of the devil, you heard the door open.
"I'm home! And I've got a friend with me. He seemed lost, so I brought him here," Bucky yelled through the apartment. You jumped up and rushed over to the front door to see Bucky, with a post-fight Steve using him for support. "Found him in an alley getting the beating of his life by some punks."
"They were harassing this beautiful lady across the street! She was uncomfortable and I stepped in...I know how much you hate it (Y/n)," Steve said. You were used to him defending people, especially girls getting yelled at. He knew you hated it, so he figured others hated it. It just made you smile that he was so pure at heart.
You walked back to the kitchen to retrieve the first aid kit and a towel from the table, then walked back to help Steve. "Let's take you to the bathroom to get you cleaned up alright love?" you asked, already tugging him in that direction. He nodded, knowing he didn't have much of a choice anyways.
You sat Steve on the edge of the bathtub and made him show you the extent of his injuries. On his chest there was a lot of bruising, you were just thankful he was experiencing any internal bleeding. Bucky would've been able to tell the moment he found Steve.
"So, how many guys?" you asked him, attempting to start conversation.
"Just one."
"And how big was he?"
"About as big as Buck. He was pretty muscular too."
You nodded and motioned for him to put his shirt down. He did, and you moved onto in face. There was a busted lip, a cut on his left eyebrow, and a nice bruise on his jaw. You checked and made sure he hadn't lost any teeth and made sure his jaw wasn't fractured. It wasn't, just seriously bone bruised.
"I always wonder how you get lucky," you said aloud. Steve furrowed his eyebrows, not entirely understanding what you meant. "I mean when it comes to your injuries after your selflessness gets you into fights. You could've lost a tooth, had your jaw broken, or any bone for that matter. You also could've had major internal bleeding." You stopped working on cleaning his face for a second to grab the bandaids. "It worries and amazes me."
As you placed bandaids on Steve's face cuts, he thought for a second. "Doll, what do you mean by worried?" You stopped and looked at him.
"Worried that one day you will just...break," you whispered. There was a tense silence for a second, but it soon disappeared when Bucky came in the bathroom. He had changed out of his work clothes into a more casual look.
He noticed it was tense, and joked around. "Still Steve? Or did he get that sense to fight guys twice his size knocked outta him?" Bucky asked, a wide smile on his face. Steve rolled his eyes but grinned, and you had a soft smile on your lips while you made sure there weren't anymore cuts needing to be cleaned on Steve.
"No," you said. "Still the Steve we know and love." You got up to get Steve some new clothes that, you know, weren't covered in dirt and blood. He and Buck continued to talk to each other as you left. You headed into Steve and Bucky's room and found a shirt and some pants for Steve to wear.
You walked back to the bathroom and as you neared, heard the boys still talking. About what, it seemed...you were the topic of discussion. You stopped a littles ways from the doorway to listen in on the guys.
"Buck, she means everything to me. I love her so much. I-I can't imagine life without her if I'm bein' honest." A smile made it's way onto your face and you walked into the bathroom. Steve looked up and saw you, smiling brightly as he did. "Hey doll! Thanks for the clothes. I'm sorry I put you through this almost everyday now..."
You dismissed his apology quickly. "It's alright Steve. I get why you do it, and as long as you come back home with everything intact, I'm okay," you said, and smiled at him. You and Bucky left the bathroom so Steve could change. Once he was done, he handed you his old clothes and you went ahead and got them washed. When all of that was over, you all went to bed.

1941
The United States had entered into the Second World War, and were drafting soldiers left and right. Of course you all knew Bucky was going to be drafted at some point, but you tried to deny it so you could hold onto your best friend for a bit longer if possible. Bucky sure as hell didn't want to, but wouldn't fight it if he had to.
And then there was your boyfriend. It felt as though Steve were trying to enlist every other day, under a new town and everything. To your relief they always rejected him, as his list of health problems was longer than the list of people who'd been drafted.
Steve was putting his shoes and jacket on when you stepped out of your room. You were confused; he had no reason to go out. But then you realized he was enlisting again. "Steve, this is getting ridiculous. You're going to get caught at some point," you said, your voice low from the morning and from the sadness you held.
His blue eyes met your (y/e/c) ones, and you saw the determination in them. "It's alright doll. I won't get caught. And I'm not going to stop. I have no right to do any less than men like Bucky who go out and fight for their and our lives. I just...don't want to sit around here in safety feeling useless," Steve said. It was almost as if this speech had been prepared.
"Alright," you whispered, and walked up to him to fix his tie. "If-if you get enlisted, don't forget about me okay? I'll be cheering you on at home."
With that Steve stepped out of the apartment and walked away. You sighed and sat on a chair in the kitchen, and placed your head in your hands. Steve was reckless, but trying to enlist what four different times now? He's committing a crime and you were worried they'd catch him. Hell, you were terrified they'd actually take the poor thing.
Bucky came back home a couple hours later, and by the long look on his face you knew the news. You opened up your arms and the two of you sat in the kitchen hugging for what felt like years. When you two let go, both of you had tears pooling in your eyes. A couple managed to escape down your cheek.
"Buck Barnes. The 107th. I-I don't think I'm ready (Y/n)..." Bucky said, and he started to break down little by little right in front of you. "I don't want to lose you or Steve. You both are huge parts of my life." You rubbed your best friend's back and just listened and comforted.
Once Bucky had recovered, he sniffed looked down at you. "So- wait, where's Steve?" he asked suddenly realizing that your boyfriend was gone.
You sighed. Inside the kitchen you grabbed two glasses for some water for you and Bucky. "He went to enlist again. I wanted to stop him but I just...couldn't. He always makes me feel bad about that kind of stuff. Besides, I figured they wouldn't take him. They haven't before, why would they now?" you asked the air around you. Bucky gave you a small half smile and took a glass of water from you.
"But what if they do take him?" Bucky's voice was so small, you were surprised the question came from him. It was now quiet as the two of you drank your water and looked at anything but each other.
When the silence became overwhelming, you cleared your throat and set down your glass. "Look, let's...let's just not think about that. I um, read the paper today. There's going to be a Stark Expo and that sounds like fun," you said. Finally you looked up at Bucky and he nodded excitedly.
"Yes! Oh that sounds like so much fun! Steve has a date, so I'm just gonna have to find one for me!" Bucky left to his room, changed into his uniform that he had been sent home with, and left to get a date.
~
It was about an hour later when the door was unlocked and opened up again. Your head shot up to see who was there, and you were greeted by Steve. Instantly you shot up and met him at the door.
"Hello doll," Steve said and gave you a kiss. You smiled at him and then saw his disheveled appearance. You sighed and fixed his hair as best as you could. "Uhm Bucky is waiting outside um, says he found a date that'll meet him there."
So you two got ready, with you changing into a dress worthy of going out. The dress was Steve's mother's, who gave it to you as a birthday gift years ago. It only recently started fitting, and it excited you to no end. It was a simple yet beautiful dress. The top was white with navy blue and red polka dots. There was an empire waist that started the navy blue skirt, with a matching belt at the waist. It had a matching navy blue jacket with the polka dot inside, but you decided not to wear that.
You added some red shoes to tie it all together. After brushing your hair out and putting it into a nice hair-do (y'all can make up your own), you left your room and met Steve by the door. "Oh wait! My makeup!" you cried, and hurried back to your room. You put some simple eyeshadow on, and some bright red lipstick on as well. Now you were ready, and you grabbed your clutch (gift from your mother) and left with Steve.
Bucky met you two outside of the apartment building, and the three of you walked on down to the Stark Expo. On the way in, Bucky waved to a brunette girl, and she quickly joined your group.
All of you enjoyed the event, ending up in front of the big stage where Howard Stark himself would be giving a presentation. Said presentation was amazing! Your eyes were wide, your mind exploded. All the possibilities of the future hadn't really been prevalent in your mind, but nw with this promise of a flying car, everything was firing in your mind.
"God Steve imagine the future! Full of, flying cars, and-and robots, and things that float of the ground! What a wonder it would be to see all of that," you said to Steve next to you. He smiled brightly at you and the two of you excitedly kept watching.
Afterwards you and Bucky were talking, and you were trying to get to know the girl Bucky brought as his date. She wasn't very kind to you, most likely thinking you were trying to get with Bucky. You reminded her multiple times that you were with Steve, but it never really got into her head.
"Look I'm with...Steve..." you trailed off when you realized he wasn't with you three. "Steve?" you called out, but couldn't find him. He was shorter than half the people here, how would you find him?
Bucky looked over from his date and saw you looking for Steve. Then he saw an army enlistment sign. "(Y/n)," he said, getting your attention. You turned to see him pointing at the sign, and you whipped your head back around. With a sigh, you followed it to a building and found Steve on one of those things that is supposed to show you in a soldier uniform. His forehead was barely visible.
"Steven Grant Rogers if you pull another disappearing act on me, I just might kill you," you said, scolding Steve like the child he was acting like. His face flushed at your harsh words, and you pulled him into a hug. "You scared me. I thought you and some guy were about to fight or you had been kidnapped or-"
"I'm sorry," Steve mumbled into your shoulder. You sighed and let go. You made very stern and inescapable eye contact with him. He swallowed hard.
"I get you want to fight for this country Steve, I really do, but this is like the fifth time you've tried, each time with this new identity. They will notice Steve. Someone will find out. And you know what, I'm terrified to see what they'll do. I just love you so much Steve. Don't leave me," you said, a few tears swimming down your cheeks.
Steve kissed you sweetly, and pulled back to respond. "I have to do this, (Y/n). You'll understand one day, but I guess not today."

1943
It had been a long time since you last heard from Steve. You two wrote letter when he first joined, but then he became Captain America. To say the least, you were stunned at his transformation. He went from the small kid from Brooklyn to this military ready guy. That only fueled your worry for when it came to war, because now he's a perfect soldier, and would most likely go on the front lines. And not just because of higher ups putting him there, but because he would want to be there.
You of course expressed your worry in a letter to Steve, but he waved it off quickly, saying it was fine. That he'd be careful. And that he'd write every chance he got. Which most of that was true. You hoped it was all true. But when it had been about two and a half months since he last wrote to you, you got worried.
He wasn't dead, that was for sure. It he was, then everyone around the globe at this point would know. Even if the military tried to cover it up, Bucky would've written and let you know. He would've told you in the last letter if he was going away for a really long mission, so you figured it couldn't be that either. So the truth was left to stare right at you, but you didn't want it to be.
Steve wasn't ignoring you, was he?
Well, you were about to find out. Steve, Bucky, and their group were coming back to New York before heading off on another mission. At least, that's what Bucky told you in the letter he sent. He refused to share any sort of information with you about what or why. But hey, you got to see your boys.
In the letter Bucky had told you he was heading out on one more mission before coming home, and that he couldn't wait to see you. You couldn't wait either.
With one final look at the address in his letter, you walked through the building's door. There, an older man stood wiping down a counter. He looked up at the opening of the door and smiled at you.
"Welcome young lady. Lovely day we're having, yes?" he asked, a smile plastered to his face. But you knew he was a cover, since Bucky covered everything in the letter.
"Yes, but I can't wait for the rain," you said back, attempting to sound normal and not as if you had memorized saying that. The man thought for a second before nodding, and clicked a button. He pointed you to the back of the place. There, a door opened and a familiar looking person came out.
He was a handsome man, with black hair and some black facial hair. He looked very nice, and knew he did too (you could tell by the way he presented himself). "Hello ma'am. And what are you doing here this time of day?" he asked, a grin on his features. He was flirting, and it made you want to crack up.
"Just here to see my boyfriend and our best friend." His smile faltered a bit, but he recovered smoothly.
"Alright, can I have name?"
"Mine or my boyfriend?"
"Both would be nice. If it helps, my name is Howard Stark."
Your eyes widened. That's where you recognized him! The Stark Expo. "Well Mr. Stark my name is (Y/n) and I'm here to see Captain Steven Rogers," you managed to say without fangirling. He was basically a celebrity. It was an honor to be in his presence.
"First, please call me Howard. Second, he's down here. Follow me." So you did. You followed Howard down a hallway and some stairs, then more hallways and stairs, before finally getting to the room everyone was in. When the two of you walked in, you saw a vacant table near a map with pins on it. A meeting table, perhaps. No one was near it, so they must all be on break?
You left Howard with a thank you and went off to find Steve. You hadn't seen him since you managed to pick up a ticket to one of his shows, and so this reunion was long over due. You wondered around for a bit before finally finding Steve sitting at a table and looking over some files.
"Steve!" you exclaimed, happy as could be. But when he lifted his head, you saw that you were the only one feeling that way. In fact, Steve looked like he couldn't care less that you were there. "Steve darling what's wrong?" you asked. He shook his head and mumbled something under his breath, that being something along the lines of 'nothing'.
You cleared your throat and walked towards him. "Steve we haven't seen each other in months. You haven't even written to me in months. I thought, and call me selfish, you'd be more...excited...maybe," you said. Your voice had gone down since you first spoke.
"Look I'm just really busy, alright? I have to deal with this mission business and whatnot before we leave." His words hurt, but not because of what they were, but because of how he said them. He had snapped at you.
With a furrowed brow, you prodded him. "Steve, you and I haven't been together in so long. I really just wanted to spend some time with you," you said. Your voice was now only above a whisper.
"Well I don't!" He had exploded, dropping the file to the table and jumping up from his chair. You breathing hitched and your eyes widened. "I've been busy and I haven't been writing because...because..." The man sighed before sitting back down. He buried his head into his hands and rubbed his face.
Tears pricked your eyes. You knew it was coming, you were just terrified for it. "Because what?" you asked him. It was such a quiet sounding question, but it's meaning hit both of you hard.
It looked like Steve was going to answer when a woman with brown hair and bright red lips came over. "Steve, darling I- oh. Um, hello," she said when she saw you standing there. No. He couldn't have. Maybe she was just a coworker. Steve would never...
"Who are you in relation to Steve?" you asked as you pushed your tears back. You would not cry in front of them. You couldn't.
She cleared her throat before responding. "Well, I mean we work together but we have been on a couple dates so I don't..." she stopped at the sound of you taking in a sharp breath.
It seems he would cheat.
You turned away from the British woman and put all your fury towards Steve. "I get it now. You decided that treating me like-like shit was a better thing to do than to just tell me how you felt. Since you can't do it, I will. I feel betrayed, hurt, manipulated, and unworthy." The last word made Steve look up at you, and now he understood the damage he had done.
He opened his mouth to speak but you cut him off. "Save it. I don't talk to cheaters." You stormed off, without even glancing back once.

2012
Steve needed a minute to himself. As soon as he woke up, he had been thrown into yet another fight. He just needed a moment to, you know, not be punching bad guys. Tony offered him a temporary room in the semi destroyed tower, so Steve was currently sitting in there while looking at a box of his old stuff.
If he was being honest, he was struggling to remember a lot of things. He remembered the war, the military, being a small guy, and Bucky. He did feel like...he was missing...something. So as he looked through the box, he looked for what he felt was missing.
A photo shifted towards the edge of the box, and Steve's eyes moved to it. Carefully, he picked up the photograph and felt the tearing edges for a second before looking at the photo itself. And we he did, he found the missing thing.
The room door was thrown open with immense force and Steve barreled right on out of it. Tony would be on one of the high floors, working on the tower construction. Steve sprinted up the stairs and threw open another door, nearly tearing that one off it's hinges.
Tony looked up from his work on the hologram version of the tower to see a frazzled Steve, clutching a photo in his right hand and the door handle in the other. "Careful capsicle. Don't wanna add more work for me later," Tony said as he got right back to the new tower layout.
"Tony, I need your help with something please," Steve said, and started walking over to the other man.
Tony, being the playboy he is, thought of something dirty first, but realized the company and knew he was wrong. Clearing his throat, Tony asked, "With what?" Steve's response was setting the photo down in front of Tony. He picked it up and examined it.
"So, what am I looking at?" Tony asked him.
"I just need you to look up the name (Y/f/n) (Y/l/n)."
Tony looked back at the blond man and handed the photo to him. "Don't have to. She's my mother."
Steve's eyes widened, but then they closed. His shoulders slumped and his entire body felt one thing: regret.

Flashback
You had been running to get away from Steve and that perfect British lady when you ran into Howard Stark. The two of you tumbled to the ground with him on top of you. He stood up and gave you a hand, and you gladly took it.
"Well, this is usually when I'd say something cheesy, but I don't think your boyfriend would appreciate it," Howard said and he gave you a signature smirk. But when he saw the tears in your eyes that were threatening to spill, his expression softened. "Hey hey what happened? Here, lets talk in my office."
Howard led you to his office and once the door was closed, you allowed tears to fall. "H-he cheated on me with some-some-some British bitch!" you yelled out, furious at not only Steve- no, cheater, but furious at yourself for not noticing. "And I never noticed it either! God the signs were right in front of me and I ignored them. I just...I just wanted to be happy."
You collapsed onto a chair and buried your face into your hands. Here was a sudden pressure next to you, and Howard placed his hand on your shoulders. "You know, that cheater really made the biggest mistake ever. I don't even personally know you yet, but I can tell you are someone who any man would be lucky to just know- let alone date. I think, this cheater guy, is really going to regret doing this to you."
Sure the words were a bit scattered, but you appreciated the effort Howard was making to make you feel better. "Thank you. For the words of encouragement I guess," you said. You brought your gaze up to him and smiled. He smiled back.
Everything in the room was silent except for your breathing. You just realized how close you were with Howard. And that he was getting closer. You pushed the last bit of space away and kissed him.
And kissed him.
And soon, you couldn't remember the cheater, no matter how hard you tried.
Then a bit later, you had a happy life. With someone you knew cared. Inside your head you forgave Steve since he had died before you could. He had unintentionally led you to the love of your life. So yes you forgave him silently, because like this, you couldn't be happier.
