The Sacrifices We Make

Joining the Avengers was possibly the best decision you ever made. It started out one gloomy Brooklyn night. You decided to use your hidden powers for good, fighting crime in the streets. You only ever wanted to use these powers you had for good. That's how Tony Stark met you. He told you that you could trust him, and you decided to believe him.

That was the best idea. You were never close to your family, always feeling like something worse than the "ugly duckling" with them. Leaving them didn't end up being that hard.

"Welcome to the Tower, kid," Tony said, holding his arms out. You trailed after him, a suitcase of your belongings following behind as you took everything in. This was better than you could ever imagine.

"This is... thank you, Mr. Stark. Really, this is amazing..." you managed to say. He just smiled at you, glad that he could help out another kid.

After you got all set up in your room, he brought you out to meet the rest of the team. Most of them were there, only a couple like Thor and Natasha were missing, being out on missions. Spider-Man wasn't there, either, mainly for secret-identity reasons.

"Everyone, please welcome (Y/n) to the team! I'm sure you guys will welcome her with open arms, yeah?" They all waved at you, giving award winning smiles as well. You waved back, on the shy side.

"What can you do?" one person, Sam Wilson, asked you.

You looked over at Tony, who gave you a nod as if to say 'go ahead,' so you did. With your hand lifted up, you closed your eyes and contracted on the energy inside. You opened your eyes back up and showed off each element in your hand.

A twisting flame, a rippling ball of water, a small tornado in the palm of your hand, and then grew a flower last. "I can control the elements, and I'm still learning to what extent I can," you quietly explained as you plucked the flower from your hand.

"Impressive." You looked up to find the source of the voice and saw a stunning woman staring back at you. Her brown eyes bore into yours and you found it nearly impossible to look away. "If you need help, I'm sure I can offer some."

You swallowed and let your mouth fall open. "Uh, um, yeah. Sure. That sounds... that sounds good," you muttered. When you felt other eyes on you, you remembered where you were. Your cheeks heated up and your eyes finally moved and went down to the floor.

"Right then," Tony said, clapping his hands. "Let's grab some grub, come with me (Y/n)." He started to walk to the elevator, you following close behind. Before you turned a corner, you glanced back to the beautiful brown eyes.

In the car with Tony, he glanced at you multiple times before finally saying something. "You like her, don't you?"

Broken free from your thoughts (that definitely weren't about her), you turned to him. "What do you mean?" you asked attempting to be nonchalant and chill.

"Wanda. The one you stared at for an hour in front of everyone. That's what I mean."

Your face turned bright red almost instantly and you stared out the windshield. "It wasn't an hour..." was all you managed to mumbled. Tony just laughed and shook his head.

"Well, I hope this crush doesn't impact you too much. She's the only one best equipped to train you. Maybe Thor could help a bit as well, but she's really all you've got."

Tony's words rang in your head, and soon enough you were training, and not just with Wanda. Natasha taught you strategic fighting technique, Steve taught you ways to keep your adrenaline up and to use the strengths you had, and Tony taught you how to use a lot of the tech that was usually on the field.

Those sessions were never stressful. The one's with Wanda, were, only because you were falling for her more and more. The Sokovian was very kind, and always helped you up if you fell down.

Your powers were similar to hers, just enough that she could give you good advice that really helped you.

As your confidence in your powers grew, so did your confidence in general. Finally confident enough to talk to Wanda after a session one Monday evening.

"Hey, Wanda, got a minute?" you called, stopping her from heading out of the training area.

She nodded and turned around. "Sure, what's up?"

This led your confidence to waver, but you held strong anyway. "I was wondering if you'd like to go with me to dinner sometime? The two of us? On a date?" You held your breath and chewed on the inside of your cheek.

Wanda smiled bright, and you felt the air being released from your lungs. "I'd love that. How about this Friday? I'll pick you up?" she added, causing you both to laugh.

You nodded eagerly. "Cool, cool, yeah. I'm going to be honest with you, though, I don't know that many good places to eat here," you confessed, moving your hand to the back of your neck.

The smile almost seemed to relight Wanda's face. "Don't worry, I got a place. Just wear something casual, okay?"

At 5:55 pm on Friday, you were agonizing over the last details of your outfit and makeup. Was it too much? Was it too casual? What was Wanda's definition of casual, and was it different than yours?

The faded band tee with your leather jacket, jeans, and ankle heeled boots seemed like the perfect choice. One that Natasha gave you an eager thumbs up to. But now it felt wrong.

A knock on your door stopped you from changing into something different. "Coming!" You hurried over to the bedroom door and carefully opened it.

There she stood, looking amazing. And lucky for you, she was also in a t-shirt and jeans, with a cute green coat. "Hey," she greeted, happily looking you up and down.

You blushed under her gaze and smiled back at her. "Hey," you said. You shoved your phone in your jacket pocket, your wallet occupying the one on the other side, and stepped out of your room. "You ready?"

Wanda nodded. "Absolutely. Come on, I'll drive."

"Pizza?" The two of you stood outside this adorable little restaurant, settled in the middle of this street that was in a cute little part of New York City. The place looked so cute, so homey.

You looked at Wanda, who was already smiling at you. "Is that all right?" she asked. But it was the way she was relaxed, and smiling bright, that she knew your answer was yes.

Inside, you learned about Wanda Maximoff, the young girl from Sokovia. She learned about you, too, the young girl from Brooklyn. She had a twin brother, who died helping the Avengers a couple years ago. You had no relationship with your family, having always been the outcast.

After that night, you and Wanda couldn't stop seeing each other. The others loved it, because they saw how much the two of you healed. They never even realized how broken you two were before you started laughing more, smiling more, humming more.

Even through tough times with the team, all the disagreements and the battles, you and Wanda found solace in each other. You two even got engaged after five years of dating. Everything was going so perfectly.

Until you couldn't get up one morning. "(Y/n), what's wrong?" Wanda asked from beside you, slowly waking up at the sound of your heavy breathing getting heavier.

"I can't... I can't feel anything." That had her waking up in a second, and Wanda immediately had FRIDAY get Bruce and Tony down to you.

They transported you to the med bay and took scans at the same time, trying to figure out the root of your problem. Neither genius could understand the readings right away, having not much knowledge of your genealogy.

It took two days of intense research before Tony approached you, at three in the morning. Wanda had gone to bed an hour before, only because you told her to.

"Tony... what'd you... find?" you asked. In those two days, you had merely gotten worse. Your body was covered in sweat, your breathing getting shallower because of the pressure you felt on your chest. Your head hadn't felt calm in nearly forty eight hours.

He looked down and then cleared his throat before looking at you again. "Nothing good, kid." Tony pulled up an imagine on this tablet and faced it towards you. "By the looks of it, your powers are killing you."

Everything was muddled after that. He explained things, put more pictures up on the tablet's screen and tried to show you, but you couldn't hear him anymore. Not after those words.

In the middle of his explaining, you asked, "Can you save me?"

The desperation in your voice had Tony nearly letting his composure go. Instead, he took a deep breath and nodded. "I think so. But, we should talk about it in the morning, okay? After I've run my last tests and Wanda's here."

You nodded, feeling some relief after hearing his answer. Sleep was hard to come by after that- well, just in general- so you were exhausted come morning. By the looks of the dark circles under Tony's eyes, he was, too.

Wanda squeezed your hand tight as Tony told her what he told you hours before. "But... you say there's a cure? A way to save her?" she asked, trying to be hopeful.

Tony nodded. "Yes. Bruce and I stayed up al night and confirmed that, Wanda, your powers could remove (Y/n)'s, thus effectively getting rid of the parasite killing her."

"That's amazing!" Wanda cheered, pulling you into a cheerful hug. You were excited, of course, but when you moved away from Wanda, you saw the sadness in Tony's face hadn't gone away.

"What?" you asked. "Is there a catch?" Nothing could ever be simple.

He sighed and pulled up a graphic on a screen at the foot of your bed to where you could all see. "This is a map of your brain," he started, and you followed along with where he pointed as he talked. "Here is the cerebral cortex, where most of the memories like long-term ones are stored. This highlighted are inside the cerebral cortex is where Bruce and I have deduced your powers to be connected to."

You could feel your hope crumble away. "What does that mean?" you asked, heartbreak in your voice.

Another sad sigh and Tony looked back over to you.

"It means that if Wanda removes your memories, there's a ninety eight percent chance she'll take a majority of your memories with you."

Even hours later, all sat in complete silence, those words continued to echo in your head. Tony said you had only thirty two hours to make a decision about this, because any longer and you'll likely start falling into different kinds of organ failure.

You spent the first couple hours of contemplation with Wanda, and then kindly had her leave so you could think alone. Of course Wanda was torn to bits, she couldn't watch you die or take away everything you were. But...

"I fell in love with you once, Wanda. I'm sure I could do it again," you whispered to her as you leaned your forehead on hers.

Her hands clutched yours, and they shook with every sob that wracked her body. Somehow, you were clam, maybe because you made the decision and were at peace.

"I can't lose you, (Y/n). Please..." she cried.

"But you won't really lose me. If I die, then that's the end. But taking some memories means I'm still physically here. That we can try again. And that's a risk I wanna take, Wanda. Please."

Neither of you could speak, the silent seal in the room being broken by Tony walking in. "(Y/n)...?" he asked, not wanting to ask the full question. There was no need, anyway, you knew what he wanted to know.

You pulled your head away from Wanda's, but continued to hold her hands. "I want her to take them out. Please."

Tony briefed Wanda on what she needed to do while you laid in the hospital bed. The two of them would be right by your side once they powers and memories were removed.

"Ready?" Tony asked you.

You nodded to him, then looked at Wanda. The tears in her eyes hurt you, but you knew this was the best option. "I love you."

She quirked one corner of her mouth up. "I love you so much more."

You let out a watery chuckle. "Impossible." Eyes closing, you prepared for what was to happen.

~~

Your eyes flung open as you hyperventilated in the bed you were in. Where were you?

"Hey, hey, you're okay, it's okay." You looked to your left and saw a man standing there, rubbing your arm, comforting you.

"We're right here for you, (Y/n). You're going to be all right." You turned your head and looked at the woman on your right. Her eyes caught your attention right away, and all you found yourself wanting to know was who would dare hurt her.

And you couldn't look away.

A/n: I didn't mean to make my last two sad imagines involving Wanda, it kind of just happened that way. I promise next week will be happy! I really can't wait for that one :)

I watched GOTGV3 (finally) on Saturday and HOLY SHIT DID I SOB. Anything to do with animals- CGI or not- I cannot stand. The only reason I haven't watched John Wick even though I love action movies? I don't know if I could stand the puppy dying. That would kill me then and there. So GOTGV3 murdered me. Good luck to those who haven't seen it yet, I don't think I ever can watch it again.

Hope you guys enjoyed! Have a great week :)

Bye Lovelies!!!!!!!!!!
