Not So Ideal Situations
After the Battle of New York, Thor brought Loki back with him to Asgard to figure out his punishment for the damage he had caused. The Avengers expected imprisonment, because Thor would never let execution be the answer.
However, the did not expect nor want the punishment given.
"Thor, you're great pal, I refuse to have that maniac in my tower. In the city he practically destroyed while trying to take over. Are you insane?" Tony argued.
Everyone nodded in agreement, but Thor was desperate. "Look, I understand this is not an ideal choice, but it's the best for Loki! It's either this or a small cell for eternity. I have faith Loki can change, and it won't happen in a prison," Thor basically begged.
You were off to the side, watching it all go down. By no means did you want Loki in this tower. You two had a small scuffle that added a new, large scar to your side. That scepter was your new greatest enemy. Well, and the "god" who carried it.
But you also loved Thor. He hadn't been around you guys for long, but he was a lot kinder than he may appear to be. After your injury was discovered, he apologized profusely to a point where it sounded like he had done it.
The love he had for his younger brother was easy to spot, so that's why you didn't want to enter this argument. If Loki ended up here, you'd make sure to stay very, very far away from him.
Even as the others tried to bring you in, you just stood off to the side, you noticed the look of appreciation on Thor's face. While you may not be vocally helping him out, you weren't vocally shutting him down.
Finally, after what felt like hours (and very well could have been), the team finally agreed with Thor. Conditions were made, of course.
Loki would have to be with an Avenger or SHIELD agent at all times. Only exception was when he was in his room. A guard would be outside.
He would have to wear power-dampening cuffs the entirety of his stay. They would made in such a way that only one person, Tony Stark himself, could remove them.
During any missions that might require all the Avengers, Loki must either stay in his room or be transported to a cell. He got to pick.
You noticed how Thor was happy to have "won" in a way, but it also hurt him that his bother would still be a prisoner here.
But like you said. You'd be staying far, far away.
The day Loki arrived you were absent, as well as Bruce. He didn't think he could handle being there without turning into the other guy. You just didn't want to see him.
His room was located on the floor right below yours, so that was helpful in your mission to avoid him. A while after he arrived, maybe a week, Thor came up to you and thanked you for indirectly helping him.
"I understand what he did to you was awful, and I am forever sorry that he did, so it truly means everything to me that you did not... pile on to the arguments," Thor said.
You smiled at him. "Of course. I may not like him, but I see you love him a lot, so I knew this meant a lot to you," you said, and Thor smiled back at you.
A few more weeks went by. Loki started going about the tower a bit more, venturing further than his room and the library. Thor was almost always with him, per the rules, and it was obvious to see Loki detested it.
But, he wasn't seething as much as he was when he first got here, so that was an improvement.
You wouldn't know much though, because your mission had been very successful so far. Any time Loki would be coming to a room you were in, JARVIS alerted you. Tony was nice enough to set that up in an earpiece you wore.
Then, you'd make a swift and not too suspicious exit.
The only time you two were in a room together for more than a literal second was last night. Thor had once again practically begged the others. He wanted Loki to eat dinner outside of his room for once.
While you objected greatly, you did the same thing as last time: remain silent and take everything in.
The others gave in quicker this time, though, and Loki came out to eat. He didn't speak and neither did anyone else. Loki barely looked up from his food. When he did, you could feel him glance at you.
Since you were extremely interested in what was on your plate, however, you didn't look back at him. A few seconds later, you felt his gaze move off of you and everything kept going.
Then it had been a couple months. While he still wasn't liked, Loki was starting to be tolerated by the Avengers. It was a weird dynamic, because all of the rules were still in play, but he didn't get any dirty glares whenever he entered a room.
You had even opted to sit for a moment longer when he entered rooms. But you still didn't acknowledge him. Even the others had started to, so Loki was really picking up on your disinterest in him.
One morning, you were hanging out in the common area, looking at some random news articles for entertainment. Your scroll was interrupted, however, when Thor came in the room, fully dressed in his Asgardian gear.
You stood immediately. "What's going on?" You were ready to hurry off and get changed yourself. But the sight of Loki by his side threw you off a bit.
"Can you please take Loki to his cell? I know, I know, and I'm sorry, but I need to leave and no one else is close enough," Thor hurriedly explained.
With a hard look on your face, you nodded, and Thor profusely thanked you as he hurried off.
Finally, you looked at Loki. The hard look in your eyes was still there. He, however, looked a lot less evil than he did the last time you two had an encounter.
"Let's go," you said, doing a 180 and heading to the elevator. Loki followed after you without a word.
In the elevator, you were even more on edge than usual. Small spaces didn't work well for you. Childhood trauma and all that. Not everyone loves to hear about their mutant kids.
It so didn't help that you were forced to share the small space with Loki.
You thought you heard him try to start multiple sentences, but he never said a full word. It was better this way, riding in silence.
Until the contraption stopped moving. Jolt to a halt, really is a better way to describe it. You could feel your heart starting to try to rip itself from your chest, but took in a deep breath.
"JARVIS?" you called out, hoping the AI would have a good answer for you.
"I'm having troubles connecting. Rebooting should take only a moment." That wasn't good.
"JARVIS?" you tried again, this time letting some panic seep through.
It took few seconds, but a different voice broke in. "Hey, (Y/n)?" It was Tony, but he just left for a mission? "I'm so sorry kid, I don't know why the elevator isn't working. I can't do the reboot from my suit. I'm trying to see if someone at the Tower knows what they're doing."
"How long?" you asked. Thirty minutes would be pushing it, but you figured you could make it that long, knowing salvation was coming soon.
When there wasn't a response for a few moments, you got worried. "Most likely upwards of a couple hours. I am so sorry," he said. And through the comm, you could hear battle noises telling you he really couldn't talk.
Suddenly, neither could you. The panic started to talk over your brain function and you found yourself turning and sliding down the elevator wall. There were muffled sounds around you, but they were lost to you.
"Uh, what's wrong with her?" Loki asked. He wasn't at all sure about what to do with an Avenger nearly curled into a ball in the corner. If he didn't have these damned magic-dampeners on, he would have gotten them both out by now.
"Oh shit," Tony mumbled, forgetting you were supposed to be moving Loki. "Okay, look, she has a whole traumatic relationship with small spaces. If you can get out, great! But without your powers that will be hard."
There was a loud noise that sounded like someone getting hit, and Loki figured Tony really couldn't talk right now. "All right, I'll figure it out."
There was no reply. Loki looked around the elevator, trying to see what was at his disposal. The answer was practically nothing except for himself and you.
Carefully, as to not freak you out, he stepped up to the elevator doors and attempted to wedge his fingers in and pry the things open. But they were so flush with each other, it was like the crack didn't even exist.
Loki said some things under his breath, a lot of swearing that wasn't in English. He knew he had to do something, and he knew what that something was, he just didn't think he could do it.
Slowly, and very unsurely, Loki knelt down on the ground about a foot in front of you. "... Lady (Y/n)?" he started, very quiet and hesitant.
You could see movement in front of you, but nothing was registering. All you could think of was your Harry Potter-esque upbringing.
What you did register was the sudden hand holding yours. Thinking wasn't on your mind, so you simply squeezed the hand in yours and tried to find comfort in it.
Words were being said, but you couldn't comprehend any of them. But they sounded calm and quiet. Gentle. So you assumed they were assuring and kind.
Slowly but surely, you could feel your breaths getting steadier and more spread apart. You were calming down. Few people had ever been so successful in calming you back down in the middle of a panic attack.
The two of you continued to sit on the floor of the elevator, Loki awkwardly placed a foot-ish away from you with his hand being squeezed to death by your own. With your knees up to your face, you simply rested your forehead and got yourself away from the bad place in your mind.
It felt like forever before you heard sound- the elevator going back into motion. You didn't move, however, until the doors opened and people were hurrying in to make sure you were okay.
Tony was the one to pick you up off the ground, and he and the other Avengers surrounded you as they took you to your room, making sure you were okay.
You looked over your shoulder, seeing Thor helping Loki off the ground. You made eye contact with the trickster god and mouthed, "Thank you."
After that, you didn't feel as inclined to avoid him.
