I (Don't) Hate You

Another request from the fabulous @Lalelu10001-this time we've got a Steve one! I hope you (and everyone else) like it!

Working with the Avengers was a dream come true. After finding out you had fire based powers, you were scared the government was going to kidnap you and run experiments on you.

Instead, the cooler part of the government showed up and introduced themselves as SHIELD. They wanted to keep Earth safe, and to do that, they needed people with extraordinary skillsets. That's where you came in.

Being honest, it was awesome. You loved being around people who weren't scared of you or creepily fascinated. Most of the time, you were treated like any regular old person on the street. Nothing was weird to these already weird people. It was fantastic.

Well, most of it was fantastic.

"Damn it, (Y/l/n), I told you to wait for my signal," Captain I'm-So-Great scolded.

You just rolled your eyes. "You were taking too long. From my vantage point, I could see the situation was a lot more dire and took matters into my own hands."

"And because of that, you almost got killed! You almost got others on the team killed! Just because it worked out this time, doesn't mean it'll always work out!" he yelled at you.

You threw your hands up. "Everyone's fine, Rogers! You're making this shit more dramatic than it needs to be just because your ego is a little bruised."

His jaw dropped. "My ego? You can't even follow simple orders because yours is blocking your common sense from being used!"

Off to the side, Wanda and Sam leaned against a wall with their arms crossed and heads tilted, watching the argument unfold.

"We should do something to stop them," Wanda said.

She started to move off of the way, but Sam moved a hand to stop her. "Don't you dare, this shit is entertaining. They don't make shows half as good as this."

You and Steve were getting closer and physically yelling in each other's faces. Unfortunately for Sam, Tony came into the room and pushed the two of you apart.

"All right, all right! Settle down!" he yelled over you guys. Finally, you two stopped yelling at each other.

Everything about being an Avenger was fantastic. Many places gave you a discount, some even refused to let you pay for anything! Plus, you saved lives. That was the most impressive part.

But Captain Steve "Goody-Two-Shoes" Rogers made it hard not to hate the job some days. He was an overbearing son of a bitch who had no idea how to let go of his hard grip on control. Sometimes, others knew better than him, but he refused to accept it.

You often ended up ranting to Wanda about how much you hated Rogers.

"Seriously, Wanda, I have yet to see this amazing piece of history everyone keeps talking about. Which sucks, because he's son fucking hot but when his mouth opens it's like everything in me dies. Like instantly."

Wanda rolled her eyes and played with the pillow she picked up from where she was sitting on your bed. You were pacing around in front of her, particularly mad about the latest mission.

"Plus, he doesn't respect me or my powers. I know I'm not perfect, and I still need to train to truly get the full potential, but it's not like I don't know how to control them at all! Hell, I'm not going to see the entire forest on fire. I know what I'm doing."

You looked over at Wanda. She was mindlessly nodding along while the picked at a string on your pillow.

"Hey," you said. She looked up and gave an apologetic smile. "I just... I want him to respect me."

You moved to sit on the edge of your bed near Wanda. She scooted over to be closer to you. "Well, (Y/n), it's not like you're trying to earn it. On the next mission, just try and follow his orders. Please? I promise it'll help."

Sighing, you flopped backwards onto your bed. "You're right. I know. But it's gonna be so hard," you practically whined.

Wanda laughed and flopped back next to you. "It'll be hard, but I believe in you."

A few days later, the next mission was happening, and it just so happened to involved you and Steve. Others were going to be there, too, but seeing the two of you together made the others tense up and prepare for the yelling.

"All right, eyes and ears here," Steve started the briefing. You, Wanda, Sam, Clint, and Natasha listened intently.

"(Y/l/n), you're on watch. Only say something if you see someone dangerous come out to our blindspot."

"Yes sir," you said, nodding your head once. Steve raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything. The others in he jet had the same question in their minds, but didn't say a word. Only Wanda understood, and she shot you a half smile when you two made eye contact.

When the jet landed, you hurried into position. Once there, you assumed your boring-ass position of "watch dog," but you were only allowed to alert. Not actually do anything.

At one point, you saw a shady character trying to creep around. "I've got someone, he's coming around the northwest corner. I can take care of him-"

"Not necessary. You stay where you are, Clint will take care of it," Steve commended over the comms.

You took a slow breath in and out, letting yourself calm down before immediately trying to snap back. "Got it," you reluctantly answered, settling back in your spot. A second later, you watch an arrow fly through the air and into the target.

At least the mission went well. Sure, you didn't do anything, but it worked, and you followed your Captain's orders to a T. Now you just wanted to know how many more missions would have to be like this before you'd actually be trusted to actually do something and it not be against the "Captain's orders."

When everyone was back on the jet, the air was tense. People were waiting for you to blow up at Steve for forcing you to do nothing. You fooled them, however, and just took your seat in silence.

The ride remained that way. People were actually able to relax a bit when they realized neither you or Steve were going to say anything to the other. You were actually impressed with yourself.

Right as the team was nearing the end of the journey, however, is when shit went south. Fast.

Steve stood from where he was at the front to walk toward the back, assumedly getting ready for disembarking. "You know, I gotta hand it to you (Y/l/n), I didn't think you had it in you to actually listen for once."

Everyone froze. This was the moment they had been dreading, the one they thought they escaped. Eyes were on you as they waited for your response.

You took another slow, long inhale and let it all out in one long exhale. "Thank you... sir," you forced out. Now everyone was confused.

Except Steve. He was annoyed you weren't giving him anything. So, he pushed a bit more. "I mean, really, I was starting to think you were a lost cause."

Again, nothing from you. No clap back, no yelling, nothing. You didn't even say anything this time. The others on the jet were curious as to what Steve was trying to pull. Wanda was worried how far you'd let this go before snapping.

Not very far. Steve's smirk as he thought of his next thing made Wanda's stomach do a flip as she tried to signal him to stop from whatever he was going to say.

"I actually think that's the most useful you have ever been on this team."

"All right, that's it," you said, standing up from your seat in a flash. "I am tired of you. Tired of the stick up your ass making you some fantastic guy that everyone loves so much. You think that just because you were frozen in ice for some seventy years that you get to push everyone else around and command us to do whatever the hell you want. Think again buddy!

"Everyone here has some sort of sad, sob story. I was running for the majority of my teenage years, constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering if tonight was the night the government was gonna find me and kidnap me so they could do their fun little experiments. If SHIELD hadn't found me first, I have no idea what my life would've been like, but I can tell you I probably wouldn't still be alive.

"And yet, despite all of that, I try to be a pleasant person! I'm friends with my coworkers, and I still help save the same fucking people who wanted me in their possession! And yet, for some goddamn reason, you just think it's the best idea in the world to make my life hell. I wish I understood what I did to deserve this, I really do.

"But you know what? I'm done. I'm done trying to get your damn approval or follow your shitty orders just because you can't trust that I actually know what I'm doing and how to control myself. I'm fucking done!"

No one spoke, breathed, or even blinked. Not even Steve could find anything to say- no comebacks, no remarks, not even a scolding for all the foul language you used.

Your timing was excellent, though, because the jet landed in the hangar and you were able to leave. After a moment of no one knowing what to do, Wanda jumped up and hurried after you. The others just looked at Steve for a reaction.

He didn't say anything, and walked off.

For the next month, you and Steve were never put on missions together. Not one. It actually felt like a breath of fresh air for all the Avengers, not just you. Which says a lot.

Of course, it all unfortunately came to a halt.

"I'm sorry, (Y/n), it was Fury's call," Wanda said, trying to make you feel better. It didn't. "I don't know if he knows about you and Steve's... problems."

You glared at her. "Problems? Wanda, he doesn't respect me or my powers. He doesn't use me to my full potential. I'd say they're not problems, it's simply unsafe and a waste."

"Still sounds like problems," Wanda muttered to herself, and you sent her another small glare. "Come on, it's not like you have a choice. Let's just get in there and get done."

You finally agreed with her and the two of you helped zip each others outfits and hurried out the jet.

When you guys got there, it was tense. Like, really tense. The others in the group were ready for an argument to break out. However, you said nothing, and didn't even look at Steve when you walked past him.

If he didn't know how to deal with you when you were complying with his orders, he definitely didn't know how to deal with you when you were flat out ignoring him. The worst part was he knew he deserved it, somewhere deep down inside. He knew what he said was wrong and past the implied line.

Even as he gave mission instructions, you didn't say anything or even look at him. You still listened to him. You had to go in and ensure the SHIELD agents being held hostage got out safely.

But he didn't get to hear a word from you. Or be acknowledged by you. What you didn't know is that Steve actually felt bad and just wished you'd say anything to him. He didn't understand why he missed you so much.

When the jet landed, everyone hurried out and got to their jobs. When your path into the building was clear, you went for it and followed the intel in your ears to get to the hostages. A bunch of poor SHIELD techs and scientists. People who only knew basic self defense, nothing to get them out of this.

It didn't take you long to find them. "Located the hostages. I'll let you guys know when they're being sent out, I'll be following behind to keep an eye."

You got a couple confirmations, then turned the comms in your ears down so you could focus on the situation.

From what you could see and hear, there were three hostiles to take out. Slamming the door open, you took them out with ease. It was almost like a training exercise.

The SHIELD agents looked at you, first with horror, then relief when they recognized you.

"Okay, I'm gonna need you guys to go first, okay? You'll hurry out and be covered by the other Avengers out there. I'm going to come up from behind and ensure no one new shows up."

The agents nodded quickly and started running out the way they came. You were about to follow them, but a strange pulse tore through the room, and you felt some strange, heavy weight on your chest.

It took you to a knee as you struggled to breathe. The last two agents turned and you could see they thought about helping you, but also wanted to leave.

You waved at them. "Go!" you wheezed out. They took the word and ran.

Not even a second after they were running off, a gunshot rang out. You thought that one of the agents had been hit, and it would be your fault because they had hesitated to help you.

Then you saw blood dripping on the floor below you. And you felt the pain in your abdomen. And you knew it had been you who had been shot.

Within the second it took you to figure all of that out, you were already on the ground.

~~

"Where the hell is (Y/l/n)?" Steve asked. He was the one to take the hostages back to the jet, but was confused when he didn't see you anywhere with them.

The shaking hostages were no help, and Steve wasn't surprised at all. "Wanda, you grab the hostages, get them back to the jet. I'm going to find (Y/l/n)."

Wanda nodded and decided against asking question. Partially because once Steve was done talking, he was off to find you. She'd always had an inkling about how he felt about you, and she was starting to think she was right.

Steve hurried carefully through the building, running through the halls but keeping an eye out and his shield up in case any hostiles found him.

He followed the path you were given to find the SHIELD agents, expecting to find you either fighting someone or looking around for anything else important.

He didn't think he'd find you bleeding to death and being dragged off by two hostiles.

No words were spoken as Steve threw his shield. It was possible the hostiles didn't even know Steve was there until his shield bounced off one of their heads, the other one's head, and then got back to Steve.

They crumpled to the ground, causing them to drop you back to the ground.

"(Y/n)!" Steve ran over to you and just grabbed you- he didn't even give himself the chance to assess your injuries. All he needed to see was the giant pile and streak of blood to know you needed to get back to the medical bay ASAP.

~~

When you woke up, you were in a hospital bed, in a room you recognized to be in the Upstate Facility. You'd been found. The thought made you feel relaxed and very peaceful. Being found and being in this room meant you were going to be okay.

However, that all changed when you turned your head and saw Steve was standing there, looking out of the window and out of his Captain America suit. That meant it had been a while since the mission.

"Great, you hear to lecture me?" you croaked.

Instantly Steve turned around, and you confusingly watching as his features went from worry to relief. "Thank god you're awake," he said, which confused you even more.

"I must be dead."

As if to only deepen your concern, Steve chuckled. He pulled a chair around to sit next to the side of your hospital bed.

"W-What is going on?" you finally outright asked.

Steve sighed and let his head hang for a moment before looking up and answering you. "I've been a jerk- no, I've been an asshole to you, okay? And I'm aware of that. I don't know why I have been such an asshole to you. All I do know is I hated it when you weren't talking to me at all. Then you didn't come out with the hostages and you were hurt and I realized some things about myself and I..."

Suddenly, he trailed off and stopped talking. You scrunched your eyebrows together, still confused, and waited for him to say something to follow that up.

He finally pulled himself together. "I realized I had more romantic feelings for you instead of annoyed feelings. It's... I don't know how to deal with these kinds of feelings since I'll always feel like I owe something to Peggy, and that I might still love her, and that's why I decided to be an asshole to you. To make them go away."

"But they didn't?" you asked.

Steve laughed a bit and rubbed the back of his neck. "No, no they did not," he said. You even smiled a little bit.

Then, you decided it was your turn. "I- and you are not allowed to make fun of me for this, but... when I first joined the Avengers, I had a massive crush on you. I really did. I was so nervous to meet you for the first time, because I wanted you to like me. Maybe not in the same way, but in some way. Then we met and trained together for the first time and... afterward, I still held my crush. It's pretty much still stuck around, but it almost went away a month ago when..."

You didn't finish the sentence, mainly because you both already knew what you were referring to. Steve's face turned sour as he thought about all of this together. He didn't even really think about your feelings, especially when you ended up snapping back at him. And then how he kept it up for so long?

"Hey," you said, getting Steve to snap out of his thoughts and look back at you. "I said they didn't go away, right?"

This was true, you had just said they almost went away. So, Steve had a thought and decided to roll with it.

"I don't know much about you since I just argued with you, so... would you like to go on a date? An actual date."

The boldness was different, but not entirely unwelcome. Your feelings were there, they always had been, so it wasn't hard for you when you said, "Yes. I'd love to."
