Gone, But Not Forgotten?
Finding out a random kid you had a few classes with was Spiderman was definitely not on your bingo card, and yet it happened. The sweet, shy Peter Parker was exposed as the masked hero who started as a protector of the neighborhood before getting promoted to Avengers status.
While you may not have known him like MJ and Ned did, you knew Peter enough to know he wasn't the cold blooded murderer Mysterio was trying to paint him as.
He seemed to appreciate your support, returning the smiles you sent him in the hallway. When other people hesitated to sit near him in class or work with him on random assignments, you decided to step up to the plate. Just so he didn't sink deeper into the anxious pit you could see forming around him.
It had been a few days now since you had last seen Peter, and your worry only got worse when you saw on the news that his Aunt was killed. "Mom, I'm worried for him," you said at dinner that night.
She looked up from her plate and gave you a small smile. "You're just too kind for your own good. I'm sure he's just taking some time for himself after what happened."
Your little brother, who was sat across from you, scoffed. "He's a menace. It's his fault she died, he has no right to grieve."
The fork in your hand clattered to your plate and brought the meal to a halt. "You're kidding, right?" you asked, knowing this was leading to an argument. Your brother had never agreed with you on Peter, but at least he kept it to a random remark every now and then.
This is too far.
"Of course I'm not! Mysterio tried to warn us about how dangerous he is and everyone just moved on! And this is what happens- innocent people die!" he yelled, his own fork dropping to the table.
A fire lit up in your eyes. "It's not like he pulled the trigger!"
"We don't know that for sure."
"Why you-"
You started to get up from the table and that's when your mom cut you off. "Okay! I think we've had enough yelling. Finish your food- in silence- and then go to your rooms. I hear another peep from either of you tonight and you're grounded for a month."
Complying, you picked your fork back up and finished your food quickly so you could cool off in your room. Once in your room, you flopped on your bed and stared at the ceiling. You let out a shaky breath and just hoped Peter was okay.
In the morning, you expected there to still be some tension between you and your brother, but it wasn't anything you wanted to deal with.
You saw him as you walked in the kitchen and laid out the ground rules immediately. "I don't care what you think of Peter and how much you hate him, I'm just not in the mood to deal with it this morning."
"Who's Peter?"
That stopped you in your tracks, and you turned to face him. "Seriously? Are you kidding?" you asked, wondering if this was a weird 'silent treatment' thing he had going on.
Instead, he shrugged. "Why would I joke about not knowing some random dude? There's no point," he said.
Your eyebrows scrunched as you looked at him. He was right, this would be a stupid prank to play. "Hold on," you muttered, journeying back to your room.
The first place you went was your bookshelf to pull out last year's yearbook. You knew there was at least a couple different pictures of Peter in there: his yearbook photo and one of the group who went to Europe.
When you got to those pages, however, he was gone. "What the..." you flipped through, but he still wasn't there. Not even his name was listed.
In a panic, you threw the book in your hand aside and pulled out another one from years ago, one you absolutely knew he'd be in. And yet, he wasn't. His name wasn't even in the index in the back.
"Holy shit..." you whispered. You stood up and left your yearbooks discarded on the ground. Now you had to pester your mom, see if she knew what was happening.
You hurried out of your room, glad your mom didn't go to work early today. "Mom!" you called, and she popped her head around the corner. "Mom, do you know who Peter is?"
She hummed for a second, thinking, but ended up shaking her head. "Nope, doesn't ring a bell. Does he go to school with you?" she asked, genuinely wanting to know.
"Yes! God, yes! He goes to Midtown with me. He's-" You froze. "Wait, do you know Spider-Man?"
She rolled her eyes and smiled. "Well of course I know Spider-Man, he's the masked hero who likes to swing around."
"But that's it," you asked, "that's all you know Spider-Man as?"
She gave you a strange look and a slow nod. "Yes... are you feeling okay, (Y/n)? Should you lay down?"
But you were tuning her out. There's no way she wouldn't know who Peter is if she still knew who Spider-Man is. Something was terribly, terribly wrong here.
"I'm gonna... I'm gonna go for a walk..." you said, barely thinking hard enough to slip some tennis shoes onto your feet. You were lucky you were already dressed.
Your thoughts swarmed you as you tried to put things together in your head. The first question that popped out was simply what. It had many succeeding words that made several questions, like what is going on and what happened to Peter and what should I do?
You were so out of it, you barely registered people walking around you.
Someone else seemed to be in the same headspace as you, because you walk straight into each other. "Oh, I'm so sorry," you said, glad you didn't fall to the ground.
"That was my bad." The guy walked right by, barely glancing at you. It felt weird, but then the voice hit you.
You spun around and saw his retreating figure. "Peter!" He stopped, so you knew you were right. He started to turn around and you ran up to him.
"How do you..." he started, confused.
"I'm freaking out, man, everyone seems to have forgotten who you are and my mom doesn't know you but she knows Spider-Man but then all the pictures of you in my yearbooks are empty, too, and I just... I'm freaking out."
Peter looked at you, seemingly contemplating some things. You wish you had an insight to his head, because then maybe things would make sense. Maybe you could understand what was happening.
He looked at you, then looked around. "Come on, let's go talk."
The two of you went to a small diner and grabbed some food before sitting in a lonely booth in the corner. "What's going on, Peter?" you asked, your voice in a whisper.
He sighed, playing with the straw of his drink. "There was... do you remember the monsters that were around?" You nodded. "Well, they were from another Earth. There's this thing, the multiverse- look none of that's important. What is is the fact that Doctor Strange casted a spell that made everyone forget about me. To stop the bad guys from other dimension from coming."
Your eyes were wide as Peter talked. "So... but if everyone is supposed to have forgotten, how do I remember you? Because you don't exist in any of my pictures in my yearbook but I know you."
Another sigh came out as Peter shook his head. "That's what I wanna figure out, but I don't know how we can. I could try to see if Doctor Strange would help, but he doesn't know who I am anymore..."
That was a good point. A magical Avenger isn't going to entertain some random teens ideas. But he might help a fellow hero. "What about Spider-Man? Would he be willing to help a fellow Avenger?"
Peter paused, thinking for a second. "I think that could work. Meet me here tonight, okay? Then I'll take you to the Sanctum."
You didn't want to ask about the 'Sanctum,' assuming that's where Doctor Strange resided. "Okay, I'll come by here after dinner."
The two of you left, going your separate ways. The whole situation was messing with your head. Magic spells? That was something you never expected to encounter in the real world. And yet, here you are.
Later that night, after you finished your dinner, you quickly told your mom you'd be back later and hurried out of the house. She yelled out a quick curfew before the door shut and you were on your way.
Peter- as the masked vigilante- met you just outside the diner and brought you to the Sanctum. It was a gorgeous building on the outside. You wondered if the inside was similar.
You stood and watched Peter start to knock on the door, but then you weren't outside any longer. There was a wrong feeling in your body, and you felt like you had just landed from jumping, without the jumping part. Now you two were inside.
"Who goes there?" You turned and looked in the direction the voice came from, seeing a man floating down the stairs with orange circles in front of his fists.
Peter stepped up. "We need to speak with Doctor Strange. It's a sensitive matter."
The man above the stairs paused. "One moment," he said, then disappeared from view.
Now that you had regained your bearings, you looked around the building and saw the interior really did go with the exterior. The detail in the woodwork was amazing and rather impressive.
"What is it you need, Spider-Man." You turned again, seeing a different man descending the stairs.
This was your cue, so you stepped up beside Peter as he started explaining. "You cast a spell over the multiverse that caused everyone to forget who I am under the mask. And it worked on everyone except for her," he said, and pointed to you.
The man eyed you, and you wanted to shrink away under his gaze. "Do you mind?" he asked, holding a hand up.
Your eyebrows scrunched together. "Mind what?" you asked, but that apparently translated to 'yes.' As soon as you stopped speaking, he was moving his hands in an intricate pattern. It caused bright orange sparks to appear around you. While you wanted to freak out, you kept still in case something got messed up.
A second later, the sparks were gone and instead there was something floating in front of Doctor Strange. "Interesting," he spoke, eyeing the magic as if it meant something to him. Well, it most likely did, you just didn't understand how.
"What's interesting?" you asked, taking another step forward to try and understand the floating magic.
He looked between you and Peter before landing on you. "You have magical DNA. That's why my spell didn't work on you. There's something about it that causes you to be almost completely unaffected by all magic. It's... something I've never seen before."
Everything in you dropped to the floor. "M-magical DNA? You're kidding, right? There's no way that's an actual thing that I have." You couldn't believe the words you heard. Your mom was a human, and it's not like your dad was anything other than an asshole.
"So she's not human?" Peter asked. Right, things were happening around you.
Doctor Strange hesitated, then waved away the floating thing and it dissipated. "Not entirely. By the looks of it, you had traces of it, so it was a distant relative of yours. Maybe a grandparent or great-grandparent. It's not enough to give you powers or abilities, but it's enough to protect you."
You processed the words he said. "So that's the only thing? I'm not going to wake up one day with sparkles coming out of my hands?"
That caused a small chuckle. "It's highly unlikely. You should be completely normal in every other aspect of your life. Just... not this one," he said, and glanced at Peter as he said that.
Relief flooded your system. "Good. I don't need anyone approaching me about any kind of initiative they want me to join."
You and Peter gave your thanks to Doctor Strange and then left. You checked your phone and saw it was about to be your curfew, meaning you needed to get home.
"Well, thanks Spider-Man. If you ever get lonely, text, okay? I'm sure you will as awful as that sounds," you joked.
It had the desired effect, with Peter's chuckle making you smile. "I will. I guess it isn't the worst thing, having someone who still knows who I am. How about tomorrow? You got lunch plans?"
"Now I do," you said, smiling bright.
The two of you walked to your building, Peter saying that it was Spider-Man's duty to make sure everyone was safe. Once there, you waved goodbye and watched him swing off.
A/n: Okay, again, I am very sorry for the late post. I thought I'd have time during work to write but a coworker of mine didn't like me having my laptop out (even though I was still doing work). So, after they left, I got it back out and finished this.
Hope you guys liked it! I've had this idea for a bit, but didn't know how I'd execute it, and this is where I landed. Can't wait for you guys to see what I've got going next week :)
Bye Lovelies!!!!!!!!!!
