Criminally Underrated
This was (sort of) requested by milo_pixie and tchoup27 ! I hope you like it!
You meet all kinds of people with the job you have. Becoming a singer was never about that, you just wanted to make your job singing. But, that's what happens when your second studio album blows up all over social media and you become a huge star.
Five albums later, you can't seem to slow down. People still love you, your music still charts, and you've pretty much stuck it to all the people who thought you were dumb for pursuing a career in music.
Back to the point: this has led you to meet some amazing people. You've met your heroes (some good, some bad) and some amazing trailblazers. All of the opportunities this career has brought you have been amazing.
Well... almost all of them.
New York City has always been a slightly scary city, with criminals doing their thing. In recent years, however, the threats have gotten scarier because they've gotten stronger.
You hired Tony Stark to create a fantastic security system for you when you first moved to NYC, after an incident with a stalker scared the shit out of you and your family. He was more than happy to, and it worked perfectly. After the release of your third album and an increase in number of stalkers, you appreciated it.
And then aliens came to Earth and your apartment was destroyed. When that happened, you were exposed to everything, and found yourself dangling from your broken apartment balcony, screaming for help.
That came in the form of a giant green guy swinging up and taking a hold of you. At first, you were terrified after what you had seen on the news, but then you were safely placed on the ground. You looked up and watched the Incredible Hulk hurry away to keep fighting, and made sure you found a way to thank him.
It took a while for you to have the opportunity. NYC needed a lot of help, and you used as much of your money as you could to help where you could. You also started some online fundraisers to get those who could donate to find a way to help, and some of your fellow celebrity friends helped out as well.
You finally got your chance a few weeks later, when a plaque ceremony was being held to commemorate the Avengers (that's what they called themselves) and you attended. Unbeknownst to you, a few of the Avengers were fans.
That's how you landed your first invite to a Tony Stark party to celebrate the commemoration. You went, just hoping to see the man behind the Hulk, and thank him for what he did. And lucky for you, he was there.
"Excuse me?" You approached where Dr. Bruce Banner was. He was having a conversation with some other people you didn't know. "Do you guys mind if I talk to the Doctor really quick?"
They shook their heads, and walked off to continue their conversation.
Dr. Banner turned to look at you, slightly confused. You went ahead and got into it. "My name's (Y/f/n) and... well, to put it simply, you- er, well, the Hulk I guess... you saved my life that day. So I just wanted to thank you in person because hanging dozens of floors above the street really had me thinking that was it for me."
At first, he didn't say anything, really to taken aback by everything you just said. He could remember. He- the other guy- had been swinging from building to building, crushing aliens as he went. And then there had been a scream, a clear scream from building around the block.
That's when he saw you dangling, clinging for dear life. The other guy had never been the most gentle, but Bruce liked to think he was able to shine through just enough to get the other guy to save you and get you to the ground where people would attend to your injuries.
Finally, Bruce realized he hadn't spoken in a while. "Oh, yeah, uh... of course. All part of the job, I guess."
You smiled, and something about it made Bruce just know that he would never be able to forget it.
"Well, Doctor Banner-"
"Bruce," he interrupted. "Please, call- call me Bruce."
Another even more radiant smile. "All right. Well, Bruce... still. Even if it is your job, I really appreciate it."
With that, you went ahead and decided to take your leave. The party was fun, I mean, it is a Tony Stark party. But you were already tired from the day, and had an early morning that wouldn't go well if you were exhausted and/or hungover.
Bruce didn't know how to respond to you, and by the time he got himself out of his trance, he realized you were long gone. Tony watched him from afar, looking around like a crazy person, definitely on a mission.
He left the conversation he was NOT enjoying to see why his newfound Science Bro was running around. "Hey, man, you okay?" Tony asked as he came up beside Bruce.
Bruce looked up at him and sighed. "Not really... I may have just blown the only real chance I've had in so long... and I can't stop thinking about her, so I don't know if I can ever move on."
Tony's eyebrows were up high near his hairline. He had never seen this side of Bruce before, the man was pretty reserved. So this girl definitely made an impression on him, and Tony was going to do everything he could to get Bruce the girl.
"What's her name?" he asked, already pulling out his phone to ensure she got added to every single invite list.
"(Y/f/n)."
Tony paused. "You mean... you mean the famous singer who's been absolutely blowing up and who just so happens to be one of the few modern artists I truly enjoy?"
Bruce smiled to himself. He wasn't huge into following pop culture, so it made sense that he didn't know who you were. But Tony knew you, which meant his chances of finding you again just increased tenfold.
After that night, you were actually kind of surprised to see you were invited to more Tony Stark parties. In all genuine honesty, you thought it was solely because he liked your music, as did Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton.
When you could, you would go to them. They were fun enough, and you enjoyed socializing with people you would never meet otherwise. Especially the Avengers, because they really didn't have that savior complex about them (Tony Stark doesn't count, he's always been like this from what you've seen).
Each night, you'd run into Bruce and have conversations. He was quiet and slightly awkward, but it made you smile. Bruce was the one to find you first, so you knew it wasn't just you being pushy that made him nervous.
You didn't know it, but it was technically still you making Bruce act the way he was.
After nearly a year of consistently going to Tony's parties, you were ready to release another album. It was your fourth album, and you were so excited because it took a slightly different turn from your previous three, but still fell in the same genre.
Your manager and you were talking about doing some sort of release party when you heard someone passing by the office mention something about Tony Stark.
"What if I had Tony Stark host the party at the tower? If he'd let me."
Your manager raised an eyebrow. "You think you could make it happen?"
You smiled and shrugged, already grabbing your phone from your inside jacket pocket. "He is a fan, after all. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to convince him."
It wasn't. A week after that meeting, you were holding your release party in the tower.
That was the first time Bruce ever heard you sing. Sure, after he met you and learned about your career, he listened to all of your music (he absolutely saw where all the hype was coming from). But he never heard you sing live.
And that night, for the party, you sang a couple new songs from your album. One single that was already out, and another brand new song.
The way he felt about you in that moment had him feeling almost high. Maybe that's how he got the courage to kiss you when you came down from the stage and over to him. It's also probably how he, immediately after kissing you, asked if you'd go on a date with him.
Some years and a couple albums later, you two were going strong. You two were so in love, it almost annoyed the other Avengers. Almost.
You two almost always met at the Tower, or went somewhere very undercover for a date. Bruce wasn't a fan of the public, which you totally understood and respected. He had his reasons, some of which you knew, but wholly accepted. That was one of the things he loved about you.
"Oh look, this week they're back to Steve," Bruce said, moving his phone to show you a headline from one of those gossip websites. It made the both of you laugh. You were laying down on a couch, head on his lap, so it didn't require much movement.
Yeah, so since you always went to the tower, the country was speculating which Avenger you were dating. Only one gossip mag thought to mention Bruce, but everyone else speculated between mostly Steve, Tony, and Thor. Even though Tony was in a very happy relationship with Pepper, people thought you were the "other woman."
Really it just made all of you laugh.
"Hey," you said, breaking the silence again. "Remember that movie I did the soundtrack for?"
Bruce hummed, remembering how excited you had been when you were first approached with the offer. It was a huge deal for you, and a huge surprise for the public. Everyone just thought you wrote a single for the trailer. No one knew it was a whole album in the form of your sixth one.
"The red carpet for the premier is this weekend. I just wanted to ask and see if you wanted to go with me. And it's okay if you say no," you said, making sure to throw the last bit in.
After a second of quiet, you were ready to hear Bruce tell you in a very sweet way that he didn't want to. Instead, he said, "Sure. Might be kind of cool."
You sat up from where you were laying and looked at Bruce like he'd grown a giant green head (oh wait). "Wait you... you actually want to go? Please don't feel pressured to if you genuinely do not want to go."
Bruce smiled, understanding where your confusion was coming from. "Yeah," he said, shrugging as if it were no big deal. "Maybe I'm tired of people thinking your hooking up with all of my coworkers- did I tell you I saw a headline saying you were actually closeted and with Natasha?"
The two of you laughed. That would be an interesting one.
When the laughing calmed down, you smiled lightly. "Really?" you asked quietly.
Bruce nodded and confirmed one last time. "Really."
Excited, you shot forward and planted a kiss on Bruce's lips. "Oh this is gonna be so fun! I have to tell my manager- they won't believe that I actually have a plus one!"
Bruce couldn't stop laughing at your excitement. Later that night, after you had gone back to your apartment, Bruce asked Tony for his suit guy.
"I'm going to a red carpet event with (Y/n) and I wanna make sure I look good for her," Bruce said, slightly nervous, but he's broken out of his shell more and more since he started seeing you.
"I'll get him here tomorrow," Tony said, already getting FRIDAY to send out a message.
Later that week, all of the paparazzi and gossip magazines were speculating who you were bringing to the event once they heard you were being invited. The three typical names came up again: Tony, Steve, and Thor. But every other Avenger was getting name dropped, even the ladies. They were throwing it all out there.
You took a limo to the Avengers tower and went to the private garage to pick up Bruce. When you got out to greet him, you stopped.
You'd seen Bruce dress up, but never in such a handsome tux. When you saw Tony standing off to the side, proud, you knew his tailor was to thank for this.
"My, my, who is this handsome man on my arm tonight?" you jokingly asked, coming to meet Bruce in the middle. Once you two were close enough, Bruce pulled you in for a long kiss. Tony whistled in the background, but you paid no attention to him.
When the two of you pulled apart, Bruce gave you his arm and led you back over to the limo.
"You crazy kids have fun, okay? But not too much!" Tony yelled after the two of you, making you laugh and Bruce blush a bit.
In the limo, Bruce kept hold of your hand. You could easily tell he was nervous- the other guy didn't like crowds so much.
"There's probably going to be a lot of paparazzi asking for us to look at their cameras and for us to turn and pose in different ways. Ignore them, you've got me right there for ya," you said. He needed to know what he was walking into. "Other than that red carpet, it should be pretty calm the rest of the time, just lots of people milling about until everyone gets seated to watch the movie."
Bruce nodded along to what you were saying. "The red carpet is the worst," he said, getting that mindset ready to go.
You squeezed the hand you were holding. "We got this," you said.
Once your limo arrived, the driver hurried out and got your door open. Bruce was the closest to it, so he got out and helped you out of the limo.
You heard the small chatter of others around the limo, mostly just some fans and other people invited to the premier. Looks like it was more than just the gossip mags interested in figuring out your "secret" partner.
Once out, you took Bruce's arm and looked ahead. There, you could see the turn leading to the red carpet. Where everyone would finally have the answer they've been begging for.
"Shall we?" Bruce asked you, seeing the same path.
You smiled brightly at him. "We shall."
To say the world was shocked would be quite the understatement. One magazine was lucky enough to get a quote from you when they asked, "Why him?"
You just smirked. "Oh honey, he's criminally underrated."
