Broken Hearts Can Heal
We've got yet another request from Lalelu10001 (I love it, I promise). Hope I did okay!
It took a long time- like, a long ass time for Bucky to finally trust himself enough to date you. He would always be haunted by Hydra and what they made him do. However, he was finally in control of himself, and he loved you more than anything. He could never hurt you.
You, of course, were thrilled when he finally took you up on the offer of going to dinner. The two of you have now been dating for nearly a year. Which, when you already lived together in the same compound and had to trust each other with your lives on missions, felt more like an entire life.
And the two of you did fan-freaking-tastic together on missions. Others were worried at first that you two would be too worried about the other to be able to focus, but really that worry made you hyper focus. It was impressive, really.
Sam teased you all about it. He was one of your closest friends on the team (which, unfortunately for him, meant he had to listen to all the talk about your relationship with Bucky).
No one thought twice at the start of this mission. Why would they need to?
"All right, everyone here?" Steve asked, looking around the back of the quinjet before closing it. He saw your face, Bucky's face, Natasha's face, and Tony's face. He nodded to himself, then closed the door.
Tony immediately geared up to get the jet going, and Steve stood so everyone could see him. "All right, this mission is just another Hydra take down. Another base- small enough it was hardly recognized as an official base. We should be in and out quick.
"Y/n)." You perked up at the mention of your name. "You will go inside, clear out and look for any prisoners."
You nodded at Steve's command and he gave out the rest of the positions.
Like he said, nothing you guys hadn't done before. It should have been easy.
When you got to the base, everyone jumped into action immediately. There wasn't a lot of resistance- again, something chalked up to the base's small size. Not enough people to protect.
It was supposed to be easy.
You were going through the halls and noticed the base seemed to be bigger on the inside. It didn't raise the red flags it should've. There were sounds of struggle coming up ahead, so that's what you focused on. You got in the room the sounds were coming from, and by the time you realized it was a trap, the cloth covered in chloroform was already covering your nose and mouth, and you were out cold.
Bucky panicked the second he stopped hearing your replies over the comms. You always had something to say. Some progress update, something witty, a reminder for someone else. So when you had been radio silent for five minutes, he knew something was up.
"(Y/n), come in. Come in, (Y/n). Do you read me? (Y/n), come in!" Bucky's panicked voice rang out in everyone's ears. (Your comm was left behind, so his voice was echoing throughout the room you had last been in.)
"Bucky, calm down. I'm sure everything is fine. I'll go in and check- you stay out here," Steve said, leaving from his post beside Bucky to head in the base.
Steve was panicking as well, but the last thing he was going to do was let Bucky know that.
He made his way through the base, unknowingly tracing your every step. Steve got to the room you had been in moments before, and almost instantly saw the left behind earpiece. Kneeling down, Steve carefully picked it up and looked at it.
It was yours. His worst fear had come true.
"Stark, do you see anyone, anyone around you? Are there any heat signatures moving through the forest," Steve called out, standing back up and hurrying out of the base.
A moment, and then, "Negative. Just us. What's going on?" Tony had heard Bucky's calls over the comms- everyone did. They had an idea of what was going on, but they didn't want to admit it.
Bucky was scared. He didn't want to see you hurt, carried in Steve's arms. That's what he thought he'd see. Never in a million years did Bucky expect to see Steve run out empty handed from that base. That's when dots connected.
"Steve, where the hell is she?" Bucky asked, meeting Steve in the middle.
The blond could only shake his head. "I don't know. All I could find was her earpiece." Steve held the technology out for Bucky to grab. Next, Steve spoke to the group. "We need to get back to the facility stat. Stark, get someone or something looking for (Y/n) now. We need to find out where Hydra took (Y/n)."
~~
It took four days. It could have been longer, Tony said. But they were all on it, and had access to tech all over the globe, and were able to track you down. It could have been longer.
For Bucky, if felt like weeks. Months, even. He loved you, you both knew that, but he didn't realize just how badly needed you until you were gone. And he didn't know if you were coming back.
Bucky fought to be on the rescue team. He knew you'd need to see a face you loved belonging to a person you loved even more. The Avengers were close, of course (back to that whole 'you have to trust the people there to keep you alive' thing). You and Bucky were closer.
The jet nearly had the whole team on it, but Steve limited the jet to Sam, Bucky, Tony, and himself. Everyone else was the welcome home committee. Bruce had Helen Cho flown in, already anticipating injuries. You deserved the best, so you were getting the best.
Just the thought of you being injured had Bucky's knuckles white with how tight they were gripping his weapons. Bucky never went on missions with so many guns, but he was pissed- livid.
Hydra had taken so much from him, and now they take you? That was a step over the line. Bucky didn't know he had a line until this.
So he was extra strapped. He wasn't letting Hydra get away with doing something like this to you.
When the jet landed, Bucky was the first out, followed closely by Sam, and then he was followed even closer by Steve and Tony.
The four men were unstoppable breaking into the secret Hydra location. Screw stealth, they did the "guns a-blazin'" approach. Natasha and Fury would be disappointed, but they would understand.
Finding you is the worst thing in Bucky's memory to date. If anyone asked him that worst thing that's ever happened to him, he'd say finding you. Strapped to a chair. Bruised, bleeding, unconscious.
Bucky went up to you and held back his tears. "Oh, doll," he whispered, feeling your wrist to find a weak pulse was still there. When he looked closer, he saw dotted lines drawn at the spot where your arm connected to the rest of you.
They were making you the next him.
Bucky thanked every God in existence they found you faster than Hydra pulled you apart.
You stayed unconscious as Bucky carried you out of the facility, as you were brought on to the jet, and as they flew off. By the time you guys landed back at the facility, you were finally seemingly waking up.
You stirred in Bucky's arms- he refused to let you go until there was a stretcher he could place you on, and even then he'd be reluctant. He could feel himself getting excited at you being awake, but he also was worried you'd be in pain if you did.
"It's okay, we're almost home. You'll be home soon," Bucky whispered into your hair as he held you.
At the facility, the stretcher was waiting right at the edge of the jet once the back opened up. "We've got everything we need set up. She'll have to go through a work up, cover all the bases, just so we catch anything and everything," Helen Cho said once she saw Bucky carrying you out.
You were finally starting to really wake up at this point. Bucky placed you on the stretcher, and that's when you woke up.
Your eyes shot open, like the do in movies. You didn't know where you were. Who you were with. A whole bunch of concerned faces were suddenly in your view, and you didn't know a single one.
"No... no..." you whimpered, and you started to fight at the people touching you.
Helen leaned in. "(Y/n), it's okay, you're safe no. Hydra can't hurt you anymore, we're here now," she said, hoping you would register the words and you'd calm down.
It didn't help. You just kept shaking your head. "No, no, I don't know you! I don't know who you are or where I am! Please, let me go! Let me go!" you cried out.
"Shit, we need something to calm her down!" Bruce yelled, directed to one of the other medical personnel on staff so they could go get something. A girl sprinted off to the medical bay- thankfully not too far away.
"(Y/n), please calm down, it's us, you know us, we're not going to hurt you," Sam said, coming up to grab your had.
You shoved him off- shoved everyone off- and started getting more mad. "NO! Get the hell away from me! I don't know any of you! Stop touching me!"
Bucky could only watch from a few feet away. The second you started saying you didn't know them, he found himself wandering backward and away from everything.
Hydra did get to you. They already started pulling you apart before they could save you. He just watched as your fighting spirit died when Helen stuck a needle of something into you.
~~
"Unfortunately, Barnes is right," Helen started. She was talking to the team in the hall right outside of your room. You were still knocked out. "After our assessment, we can confirm Hydra wiped her memories."
Then, Bruce stepped up. "However, it doesn't look permanent. Her memory centers are pretty dark, but not black. She could regain her memories, we just have to figure out how. And we have to be patient."
Bucky looked up and saw Bruce staring directly at him.
"I know we all want her to get her memories back, to get better, but that can't happen if she's stressed out. We'll have to see how she is when she wakes up, and then take it from there."
Everyone nodded and mumbled things. Bucky was quiet. He was thinking. Before everyone else left, he was already gone, heading for his room.
When he got there, he put the lessons you gave him to use and started searching on Google.
"How... to... get... memories... back," Bucky mumbled as he typed into the search bar. Then, for the rest of the day and a few hours into the night, Bucky searched and searched and searched. There was a lot out there, and he was willing to try it all.
If it worked for him, it could work for her.
~~
A week went by. Nothing had worked. When you woke up, Bruce and Helen explained everything to you. You were, unsurprisingly, confused, but they assured you that you were safe and would be okay. So, you didn't seem to flighty.
Bucky was the next person to see you. He seemed so sweet, you thought, and you wondered what you were to him. Then, you saw his metal hand, and remembered something from Hydra.
The heart monitors went nuts, and Bucky was asked to leave. Steve consoled him, tried to get him to understand it wasn't his fault, it was Hydra's. Everything was Hydra's fault. Bucky acted like he believed Steve, but he didn't.
Instead, he decided to keep his distance (not really his choice, Bruce kind of insisted on it). Bucky got the others to help him out with what he found online. Sam went in and talked to you all about the times he had with you. The stories made you laugh, but nothing made you remember.
Steve came in a different day, did the same. Each Avenger came in, talked to you and showed you things, then would leave defeated. Nothing was working, and Bucky was worried Hydra did something this time to prevent the dark areas from being unlocked this time. That they had learned from him.
You were trying to go to sleep, but everyone's words kept ringing in your ears. According to the one girl- Natasha- you were in a relationship with Bucky, the one Hydra told you horror stories about.
It almost made sense, until you thought about what you were told and then all the sense disappeared. Like everything else.
But as you were trying to think, something new popped into your head. A memory, and not something someone told you about to try and bring your memory back.
It started off hazy, like trying to remember a dream after you wake up, so you closed your eyes and let yourself bring the memory forward.
Bucky was there. In fact, he was all you could see. He was smiling, maybe laughing- there wasn't really any sound. But the memory did make you happy. It was good. He leaned in and you closed your eyes, but you could still feel him kiss you.
When you opened your eyes, the memory fluttered away and you were back in the medical bay.
The feeling of the kiss stayed, though, and you were curious all of a sudden.
When the next morning rolled around, Bucky found himself walking down to the med bay for the first time since you freaked out at him. Helen had come and got him, saying you asked for him. He didn't waste a second, but wondered why.
You waited patiently for him to arrive, still holding on to the feeling of the kiss. When Bucky came in behind Helen, you found your heart rate trying to increase at the initial panic, but then it stopped and went back to normal when you pulled on the new memory from last night.
"Thank you, Dr. Cho. If you don't mind..."
She smiled. "Not at all. I'm a button push away, okay?" Then, she nodded to Bucky, and left the room, closing the door behind her.
Bucky stood awkwardly close to the end of your bed, and far away from you. "I'm sorry. For... scaring you, the other day. I- I didn't mean to," he said, stumbling and stuttering the whole way.
You shook your head, waving it off. "It's okay, you didn't mean to... Natasha told me we are together. Dating, and have been for a long time. I've heard a lot of really great things about you."
The corners of Bucky's mouth twitched into an almost smile. "Yeah?" he asked, a little hopeful.
You nodded quickly. "None of it was helping me remember, though," you said. Seeing Bucky's shoulders drop made you feel bad, so you added the last bit quickly. "But then I remembered something last night."
He perked up again. "Really?" he asked.
"Mm-hm."
There was a pause. Then, "What was it?"
You felt your face turn a bit pink at this. Of course he'd want to know the memory, but it still felt awkward to tell it. "Well," you started. "It wasn't, like, a specific event. It was just... you were smiling. And I could feel myself smiling, too. We were happy. And then..."
Bucky waited patiently, leaning forward a bit. "And then...?"
"And then we kissed," you finished. "And I just... the feeling... I was wondering if we kissed in real life if that might help."
He didn't know how to answer at first. Of course, he'd like to say yes and just go for it. But it felt... weird. While this was, technically, you, it didn't feel like it, because you didn't have the foundation that made you you.
Plus, you were terrified of him just days ago. This rollercoaster wasn't his favorite.
But this was for you, and if it's what you wanted, he was gonna go for it. "Are you sure?" he asked, taking some careful steps forward.
You nodded, and said, "Yes."
Bucky nodded back, then took the last few steps to make it to your bedside. He pulled up the chair everyone else used closer to the edge of the bed and sat down.
You adjusted yourself so you were sitting up and facing him. Then, the two of you were just looking at each other.
"Um, so, how do we, uh, usually... do this," you asked, gesturing between the two of you. "I'll just let you lead."
Bucky nodded and said a quiet, "Okay." Carefully and within full view, he moved his hand up to your face to cup your cheek, then moved the other to your side. The moves made butterflies erupt in your stomach, and you started feeling the pull of more memories.
"Ready?" Bucky asked, still quiet.
"Yeah," you breathed. If you didn't remember anything from before, you at least knew that you wouldn't mind seeing more of Bucky. Or feeling more of him.
"Okay." He started to lean in, so you just closed your eyes and let him do the rest.
When his lips met yours, you felt the memory from last night, and did your best to do that. When nothing else hit after a second, you were ready to pull away and say it didn't work. Then Bucky did something, you have no idea what, but it deepened the kiss in such a way that more things came flooding forward.
More memories, of all kinds (mostly with him) revealed themselves to you. It was all happening at once, yet you could still feel every memory individually. The emotion you felt strongest of all?
Love.
When the two of you parted, Bucky looked up and waited for you to open your eyes, to see if the kiss had done anything.
You opened your eyes and looked right into Bucky's. The smile that grew on your face and the look you had answered all of Bucky's questions.
But he had to be sure. "It worked?" he asked, excited, but trying to hold back.
Then you nodded, and Bucky let himself be excited. "Oh my god!" he breathed, immediately pulling you into a bone crushing hug. You hugged him back and felt tears of happiness drip down your cheeks.
"You really scared me there for a second, doll," Bucky said, pulling away so he could look at your face again.
The bright smile on your face wouldn't leave for a long time- your cheeks were already starting to hurt.
You placed a hand on his face. "Oh, but I knew you'd get me back. You're always there for me, Buck. I knew I could count on you."
Bucky pulled you back into a hug, and finally called out for FRIDAY to let the team know you were "back."
Until they got there, he'd just hold you, and would make sure to never ever let you go again.
