Bittersweet

"You meant everything to me," you started. Silence followed. "You were my whole future- it was all I or the gods could see. You and I, a family of our own, living together in this grand palace. It was everything I wanted with you."

"Oh, so it was the palace that drew you in?"

With a loud sigh, you shook your head and put your elbow on your leg and then your head into your hand. "I couldn't care less where we lived, Loki, but no matter if it were the grandest of palaces or a hole in the mountain, I would've been with you," you said.

The tears had stopped coming down you face, nearly an hour after Odin had told you of Loki and what had happened. How he had lived and tried to take over Midgard. His selfishness and his betrayal had brought you to tears, but your burning anger had since made the tears stop.

He didn't have a sly remark for your last sentence. Instead, he changed his tone. "Why are you here?" he asked, glaring dangerously from his cell. "Are you just here to gloat?"

"About what?" you asked harshly, causing even Loki to step back slightly. "About how I got to live these last few years in a deep depression, mourning you and begging to see you again? Ah yes, I'm here to gloat about that."

You looked over at the guards, standing about ten feet away. They were there as a precaution but you really just felt like they were here to make sure you didn't try to get Loki out of the cell. Maybe that was the precaution Odin truly meant. They'd be able to catch you before you were even fully up, having to stand up from a bench before being able to make any moves toward him.

Loki turned away from you and clasped his hands behind his back. "You shouldn't be here, I don't understand why you'd think to come," he said with a harsh tone. They stung, but you kept strong.

"Because some people care about you, Loki, and were devastated by your supposed death," you said back in a low voice.

He just laughed, but there was no joy in it, no humor. "You really think I'd fall for such words?" he asked. "Really, (Y/n), how little do you think of me? Do you truly think I'm that much of a fool."

Instead of answering his questions, a memory popped into your mind and caused a light smile to grace your lips. "You know, you once called yourself a fool when you realized you had fallen in love with me. I called you the smartest man alive."

"How dare you play with me like that!" Loki yelled, his fists clenching and jaw tightening. He was fighting off his feelings, his kind side that you were igniting.

"I was never playing with you I loved you!" you yelled back, definitely louder and angrier than him. He froze and his hands went slack by his sides.

You, however, were just getting started. "You were there by my side, every waking and sleeping moment of my life! I thought we would be happy and we could lead a beautiful life together! I was the first person Thor told about your demise on the Bifrost. Do you understand how badly I wanted to join you? I wouldn't leave my home for months because I couldn't imagine trying to live my life without you in it! My sister had to be with me day and night after the first week because I tried to throw myself off a cliff to be with you! I wanted to join you in death because life without you seemed too painful and harsh.

"You were my everything Loki." The tears started to pour down your face again. "So imagine the pain I felt when Odin told me you lived and decided to try and take over an entire realm like a madman. Completely different than the Loki I used to know."

There was pain in his features and for a moment you thought you had gotten through.

"Then I guess you really never knew me," he said back, voice low and cool.

Your jaw trembled and you did your best not to make any noises of hurt. Instead, you shook your head and moved to stand.

The guards came forward but then stopped when you turned to walk to them and the exit. They got on either side of you to lead you out, but then you stopped. You turned around to see Loki already looking at you, obviously watching your departure.

"I wish you had died when you fell, because then this awful man in front of me wouldn't be here, hurting the only person who truly and deeply loves him," you said in the strongest voice you could muster. Hurt was still written all over your face.

Loki sucked in a breath, and finally looked hurt, meaning he was closer to his old self. But you knew that was all you were getting.

You would never get the sweet boy who walked through palace gardens with you, picking a new flower each day to give to you until you had ever flower in the garden in your room. The boy who always held your hand, even if Thor and his friends made fun of him for being so madly in love. They weren't wrong, and Loki didn't care as much back then. Even if the taunts got to him, you were there to tell him those words didn't matter.

In this moment, Loki finally managed to see that everything you said was true. Every word about you caring for him and loving him. It had all been real and honest. But he lost his chance when you turned back around and left the dungeon.

You never saw him again.
