A Different Kind of Inheritance

You never even had a chance at having a normal life. Not when your mother's Captain Marvel herself, Carol Danvers. She's an amazing mom, which is awesome of course, but it's hard sometimes.

Being an Avenger- and one of the only ones with the ability to go to space- meant she was away a lot. You understood, especially because when she was home, she was the best mom you could ask for.

For your birthday one year, a friend of yours got you a Polaroid camera and since then, you haven't stopped using it. Pictures of you and your mom, the Avengers you knew, Maria and Monica, and your other friends were quite literally everywhere on your wall. They were there for those weeks your mom had to go away.

Despite how much you love your mom, it's hard being her daughter. Everyone thought the child of Captain Marvel would inherit her powers. More like, hoped. Nobody understood how her powers affected her DNA. If they became a passable gene of any kind.

The answer was no. For years people like Nick Fury came by to see if you had "developed" anything, and your mom would always shake her head. When you turned ten, they stopped thinking it would ever happen.

It was because of this you felt "extra-ordinary." Even more so when your mom decided not to hide your relation to her (saying it would be too hard for little you and would just be a headache all around). Everyone knew you were the powerless daughter of the most powerful superhero in most likely the entire galaxy.

What you didn't have in powers, you made up in brains. Aerospace seemed to be the place you settled in- shocking- and it landed you a place at Midtown in New York City.

That's where you met your best friends Peter Parker and Ned Leeds, and then MJ and Betty. You were a good group of five. You even got close enough to be let in on Peter's big secret- his crush on MJ.

Okay, not that one, he also told you he was Spider-Man. He figured he could trust you of all people to keep his secret pretty locked up.

Along with the brains, you had a pretty rigorous workout schedule to stay fit. Your mom sometimes worked out with you, although those were just warm-ups for her. Every morning before school, you went on a mile run, going out of your building and around a few blocks before getting ready for school.

And that's the cause for everything suddenly going to shit.

"I'm going for my run!" you called from the front door, slipping on your shoes and then starting a running workout on your watch.

"Be careful!" a voice called from somewhere in the apartment.

As you opened up the door, you called back, "I will be!" Once it shut, you put your earbuds in, hitting play on your watch and began at a light jogging pace to get out of the building and down the stairs. Once out, you picked up the pace slowly in beat with your playlist.

It was specially made so the beat of the song slowly sped up and you would slowly speed up with it. The point was to match your footfalls with the beats of the songs. It was a pretty successful strategy so far.

Running, even with music playing in your ears, left your mind wandering into different avenues of thought. One that was frequently was the thought that maybe you could workout so much and gain your mom's powers.

That was a road reserved for desperate and depressing days. You decided today wasn't going to be that kind of day.

The nice weather and cool breeze helped make it that way. Sure, it would be so nice to have powers and be able to fight side-by-side with your mom. Talk about a power duo. But you'd survive without. Besides, if you mange, you could make your own Iron Man suit that's fit for space and travel to new places with your mom.

That would be awesome. You couldn't wait to see other planets and other life out there. It would be epic.

Being so wrapped up in your thoughts and also bing deafened by your playlist, you barely heard the horn blaring in the street. As it got louder, you started to hear it and looked up.

While you did have the right to cross the road- the little lit up man told you so- the car coming for you didn't seem to care all that much.

And now they were coming straight for you.

Out of pure instinct, you reached a hand out and tried to hide yourself behind your arm. You squeezed your eyes shut. Getting ready for the end.

It didn't come. Rather than hearing the tires squeal and feeling an impact, you heard metal crunching and felt air whip by you on both sides. Odd.

You felt safe enough to open your eyes, and when you did, your jaw dropped. You were barely aware enough to remove the earbuds from your ears and take the music from your head.

The car coming for you? Was now in two pieces laying in the road several feet behind you. The driver stumbled out of his half, looking shocked at what laid in the road. What once was a nice Audi was now junk.

And it was because of you. There were no Avengers nearby, your mom wasn't there. It was you.

You looked down at your hand, the one you held out, and saw a faint purple-hued glow. The same kind of glow your mom had around her hands when she did little things, like heat up a pot of soup a bit faster or gear up to punch someone.

"Holy shit," you finally breathed, reality settling in deep. "Holy shit."

You moved your focus from your hand back over to the car wreckage and saw the angry driver coming towards you. "What the fuck lady? What the hell did you just do to my car?!" he screamed at you.

This wasn't something you felt like confronting at the moment. Without much thought, you turned around and sprinted back where you came from. He yelled after you, but nobody cared much about him. Most were staring at you, even a few phones were out.

Even better. Social media was about to have a field day with those videos.

You ran home, thankfully no one following you, and hurried up into the building and through the front door of your apartment. Once the door was closed, you sighed and leaned against it, eventually sliding down to sit on the ground.

"Honey? Is that you?" The voice caused you to panic and you sprang up from the ground, ignoring the way the doorknob jammed into your lower back, and tried to look natural.

Your mom rounded the corner, a bright smile on her face. She was all dressed up in jeans and a t-shirt. Must be going in to train today. "Yep, yeah, just me. Was a good run," you rambled, doing some weird arm stretches to avoid standing there. Still. Guilty.

"I'm glad. But you better hurry, the train you catch with Peter leaves in about thirty minutes and you still have to shower and get ready," she said. You looked at your watch, ending your workout, and read the time. "Don't worry about breakfast, I'll make something for you while you get ready. Something you can carry and eat."

Smiling and trying to ignore everything that transpired, you gave her a thumbs up. "Thanks, mom! I'll be out in twenty!"

Without another word, you ran to your room and shut the door. It was good you were a planner and had your outfit for the day laying on your bed all ready. There was no way you'd be able to focus well enough to pick out a decent outfit.

The shower was a good place to think as you sped through your routine. There was no way you could tell your mom about this, not right now. She'd probably be pissed about the car. Or maybe even relieved you finally got powers, revealing she hated you previously.

Okay, so it seems you mind wanted to go down that road.

But then... if you told her, you could become an Avenger, too. Not one that went out on all those scary missions, at least not yet. But you could finish school, go to college, and then go to the Upstate facility and train with your mom. Hell, you could do that now after school and on weekends. Learn about your powers with her. That would be sick...

"Ms. Danvers!"

Your head jolted up from where it rested on your hand and you focused on your teacher at the front of the room. She looked rather angry at you. By the way everyone had turned to look at you, it seemed she'd been trying to get your attention for a bit.

"Care to join us?" she asked, peeved.

Nodding, you subtly sat up a bit. "Yep, yeah, sorry about that. We're on...?" Damn, you really hadn't been paying attention.

Her head tilted to the side and she pointed at the board. Your eyes scanned over all the equations listed. "Got it, yep. All caught up. Sorry, again..."

She let out a final sigh and then turned to continue her teaching. When class was done, you hurried out and found Peter very quickly.

"Hey, dude, can I talk to you super quick? I hate to drag you away from lunch but it's very very important," you said.

He nodded. "Yeah, yeah sure. Roof?"

Going up to the roof (very against the rules), you relayed the events of the morning to Peter. You knew you could trust him with this. He sort of gets it. And is less scary than your mom.

"Oh my god, (Y/n), that's amazing!" Peter said, and pulled you into a hug. He let go and continued when he saw you weren't feeling the same as him. "It's amazing, right? I mean, you always wanted to gain your mom's powers, didn't you?"

You sighed and started pacing the roof, following the same you did when you were telling the story. "Of course, but I'm so scared. What if she's pissed about the car? What if she tells me she's so relieved and now I finally feel like her daughter or something? What if Nick Fury comes back and takes me to a lab to study my DNA and do all the science stuff with the needles and the blood drawing and the tests?"

Peter shook his head. "None of that's going to happen to you. I'm sure she'll understand the car thing, she loves you for more than just potential powers, and she'd literally never let anyone take you and run tests on you if you didn't want to."

His responses to your worries had your pacing slow to a stop. You look at him and chewed on the inside of your cheek. It was silent between you two as you thought and Peter waited.

Finally, "You really think I should?"

Peter nodded and took a long stride to you. "Yes, I really do. I've met your mom and worked with your mom before. She'd be so happy, but she won't love you any less than before or say she hated you before. I promise."

His reassurance made you close your eyes and nod, a smile spreading across your face. "Okay, I'll do it. I'll tell her. Tonight."

Those words felt a lot less scary on the roof of the high school. Now, sitting across from your mom at the dinner table with spaghetti in front of the two of you, you were terrified.

And of course, your mom immediately noticed. "Is something wrong over there? You short circuiting?" You looked up from your plate and saw her smiling at you, but the worry was evident in her eyes.

Now was the best time. The only time. She gave you the open, and now, you had to take it. So, you sighed and set your fork down. You had to force yourself to look up at her and not at your lap.

"I have powers." Dead silence, something you hated, so you kept on. "I found out this morning. On my run. I was going across the street and this car ran the light and nearly hit me so I held my arm out as some sort of defense but it ended up working and I opened my eyes- that had been closed- to see the car had split in two and went around me and my hand was glowing purple so I put all the pieces together and ran back here and then went to school where Peter told me to tell you because at first I was scared and then he told me I had nothing to be scared of which brings me here."

More quiet and you found yourself chewing on your bottom lip as your mom processed all the words you just vomited. Her eyes were wide and she looked very shocked at everything you just said. Which was fair, you thought.

When she still didn't say a word, you whispered, "I'm sorry about the car."

That seemed to be the phrase to knock her out of the shocked silence she had found herself in. Your mom began laughing so hard, she slapped the table and scared you. And then you were confused. Laughter was definitely not on the list of reactions you had.

She looked up and saw your faces, immediately getting up and out of her chair. "Oh, baby, I don't care about that guy's car! Oh, I'm so happy for you," she said, coming beside you and pulling you out of your chair and into a hug. "I didn't think you'd get my powers, honestly, so this is pretty awesome!"

You pulled back. "Did you hate me before? Because I didn't have powers?"

She shook her head without thought. "Of course not. Sweetheart, I love you and I've always loved you. The powers don't change that at all. Just means we have to add a new thing to our focus."

The words made you smile, so you went right back into the hug and buried your face into her shoulder. "I love you, Mom."

"I love you, too, baby. And I'm gonna do my best to help you with this. I promise."

A/n: Ha! So I lied about the double post. I went up to help move my bother out of his apartment with my mom and then we drove back home and then it was mother's day and I have the first day back at my old job tomorrow, so I totally didn't write! At all. That's my b. I whipped this bad boy out last night at nearly 11 when I should've been getting a good night's rest before my shift at 9. Anyway

I hope you guys enjoyed! This is something I saw on Instagram like, five years ago and just now decided to write it. I love Carol Danvers and think she'd be the Fun Aunt but would also make a pretty cool mom. This also works with Mother's Day! So that's neat!

Y'all have a great week and I'll be back the next! With just one imagine for my sake.

Bye Lovelies!!!!!!!!!
