Tony was going all in for a big 4th of July celebration, especially since it was Steve's birthday. Red, white, and blue was everywhere, as well as sparklers and flags. There was a DJ just starting to get together his things on the lawn as the team milled around, waiting for the party to start.

You were looking for your boyfriend Sam Wilson since you hadn't seen him all day which was unusual. Usually he pops in with a witty remark which makes you smile. Today was different for him though. 

Riley was on his mind and you knew that he must be feeling some extra guilt today. As you excused yourself from the conversation you were having with Bucky, you started to look for him. It didn't take long for you to figure out where he was. 

Taking the long walk around the compound you found Sam sitting on a bench looking up to the sky with a beer bottle in hand. 

"Hey, I was wondering where you were. How long have you been out here?" You asked as you sat next to him. 

"An hour." Sam simply responded before taking a sip. The two of you fell silent making you sigh and look up to the sky. 

"You know he had a family." Sam finally said. "His daughter would be a teenager by now." He added as his head dropped and looked at his hands. You nodded a little and put a hand on his back. 

"You couldn't have done anything Sam." You whispered making him shake his head. 

"It could have been me though. At the time I didn't have anyone like I do now. He had a wife and a family to get back to." Sam argued as he took another sip. 

When he finished his drink you took the bottle away from him and shook your head. "If it was you, you never would've been apart of the group therapy you do, you never would've touched the lives of so many people who needed you. Hell, you never would've worked next to Steve and been there when he needed someone. We never would've met. There was so much ahead of you. Yes it was sad when Riley died, and it was incredibly unfair, but that doesn't mean you don't deserve to be here." You argued. Sam didn't reply but simply looked at you with tears in his eyes. You sighed gently and hugged him gently. He put his head on your shoulder and just cried. 

The two of you sat there for a few minutes and when Sam's tears stopped his looked at you with a small smile. "Thank you Y/N, meeting you was the best thing to ever happen to me." He said making you blush slightly and smile. Before standing up he pressed a kiss to your forehead. He extended a hand to you, you took it and smiled as he laced his fingers with yours and made your way to the party. 

"Alright! Sam and Y/N are here now! The party can start!" Tony yelled when he saw you making the two of you laugh. 

The party was magnificent, it was a Stark party after all. There was even a bouncy house, Peter spent most of his time in there. There was even a poster of Steve for everyone to sign their birthday wishes on. Tony had truly outdone himself. 

During the last song of the night, Sam found you again and dragged you to the makeshift dance floor. He wrapped his arms around you and began to sway. You smiled and wrapped your arms around his neck. 

"Sam Wilson, are you dancing?" You asked with a smile.  

"No, I'm swaying with the love of my life in my arms." Sam laughed gently making you laugh and blush slightly. 

"Love of your life?" You asked looking up at him. 

"Yes love of my life. What's so surprising about that?" He asked, anxiety setting in. 

"Nothing, you just haven't said that to me before. I mean you're the love of my life so I'm glad I'm yours." You said making Sam's anxiety melt away and smile. 

"Well I'm glad you said that because I asked Steve if I could upstage him a little today." Sam said as he gently pulled away causing you to give him a very confused face. 

"I wasn't sure I was going to do this today but what you did earlier showed me that I needed to do this tonight. You are everything to me and if Riley taught me anything, is to not take anything for granted and to make sure I do something I want to do  before I lose the opportunity." Sam said, not helping the confusion you were feeling. 

The one thing that made what he was doing clear, was him getting down on one knee. You gasped and put your hands over your mouth as your eyes welled with tears. "I don't want to spend another day without you being my partner. You are my everything, a light in the dark, and you are the person that I want to spend my life with. So, Y/F/N, will you marry me?" Sam finished as he pulled the ring out of his pocket and opened the small velvet box. 

The entire team was looking on with smiles on their faces, they all helped pick out the ring, but Sam made the final decision on his own. You wiped the tears from your cheeks and smiled down at him. "Yes, of course! Yes!" You yelled and tackled him in a hug. 

Sam laughed and wrapped his arms around you as everyone cheered. You smiled at your now fiancé and kissed him. 

"Woah there, you're still in public!" Scott yelled as the team gathered around you two. 

"Like you haven't done something worse in public." You countered as you got up and helped Sam up as well. 

"True." Sam laughed and grabbed your hand to slide the ring onto your finger. 

"Congratulations! After party will now start where we will be celebrating an engagement!" Tony yelled making everyone cheer. 

"Really guys, congratulations, you two are the best couple." Steve said as he nodded at Sam with a small smile on his face before leaving them be. 

"We're really engaged." You said with a smile on your face looking at Sam. 

"Yes, yes we are." Sam said with an even bigger smile on his face. 

"Oh god everyone's going to want to be in the wedding." You realized making Sam laugh and shake his head, 

"I love you." He whispered making your attention go back to him. 

"I love you too." You said before kissing him once more.

Happy 4th of July my fellow Americans!!! I thought a Sam imagine would be nice, it wasn't what I was planning but I think it turned out pretty cute! 

I'll be out of town for the next few days so I'll update when I can and when I actually have an idea which has not been often recently so any ideas are helpful! 

So anyone with any requests for imagines or preferences, just let me know cuz I want to get back to updating more than like twice a month!
