Moving On Bucky Barnes X Reader

Requested by Nicky66, if that is still your username, thank you! Kinda X Steve Rogers too but mostly Bucky and him being him. Steve is kinda a douchebag? Like not heavily or anything, but kinda more asshole than usual, though he isn't an asshole at all.

Made something up for the sake of Bucky. Obviously not in the MCU, but easily could be considering it's freaking Marvel we are talking about. Bucky isn't crazy and he remember shit too. but he still has his metal limbs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"(Y/N) I can't stay around not like this, not with you in danger and you always having to worry if I will make it home. I can't put you through that." Steve's hand gripped his leather bag, feet inching towards the doorway.
"Steve think about this, Fury has me protected, this apartment is the safest around. If anything, I know I have you." You pleaded with the super soldier, hands tightening around his shoulders.
"I may not always be there, and even if I am, it is because of me. If something happens to you, whether its ransom or whatever, its to get at me. This will hurt the both of us, but it's better for your safety and so I won't get distracted on missions."  Steve couldn't look at you, his blue eyes focused on your rigid form, your fingers digging into his skin.
"I don't care about your missions or my safety, our happiness is more important." You refused to let the tears fall, it would only make Steve feel worse.
"Well I do, and (Y/N) you have no idea how desperately I want to stay with you. But me as a person, who I am and what I do, puts you at risk. I would never be able to live with myself, so please, let me do this." Steve's hand turned the nob, he wanted you to force him into your shared bed, make him drop his bags, show him that he was able to keep you safe and protected. But that was all a dream once he ripped open the door without another word, but closing it gently and never looking back.
"Gah!" You woke up from yet another nightmare, your mind forcing you to relive one of the worst nights of your life.
It had been seven months since Steve left, and you had never caught a glimpse of him yet. You didn't work for S.H.I.E.L.D, you had a regular job, a normal yet boring life before Steve. He came into your life literally like a storm, crashing through your window and into you in his Cap Cannonball form. And it was all history from there. He never brought you to S.H.I.E.L.D, but he did introduce you to his best friend, Bucky Barnes.
Bucky was goofy and acted kind of like a adolescent golden retriever, but was easily mellowed out and was able to be a mature adult. He was not as up tight as Steve, definitely joked and teased more, and with his very approachable atmosphere, you relaxed around him and became close. He often invited himself over, even if Steve wasn't there, but you never did mind. Your normal life got boring. And having an attractive guy with sick a metal appendage who was skilled in kicking ass, you happily invited him in. But Bucky knew to keep his distance from you, you may be a good looking woman but he would never hurt you or his best friend trying to go for you. Whether it was letting you and Steve sit together on the love couch or knowing when you and Steve just needed a day, Bucky always was attentive of the both of yours' schedules and lives so he wouldn't barge in and see something he shouldn't have.
You yawned, your cheeks crusty from dry skin and tears. Tears. Something that seemed too common nowadays. You reached for your phone, it was 4:37, your notifications were blank, typical. You groaned, knowing that going back to your mind when you slept was not the best idea. You knew that more of those would lead to an even worse day, having a buttload of errands to run and not enough daylight to finish them all, might as well get a head start, so you slid out of bed.
You looked around the bedroom, at all the empty spaces that once held Steve's stuff, all his memorabilia from WWII and his previous life. But you also saw the one item from Bucky, his gift to you for your birthday, an old and rusty yet still beautiful locket he had picked up during his battles in a town during WWII. With no mother, sisters, or close female friends, he decided that it's beauty was befitting for you. Ornate and delicately crafted borders with elegant swoops and spirals that encased the the expertly molded bird that fit snugly between it all, it was absolutely perfect. It opened to reveal a little mirror, but that was beyond the power of general household cleaning products to make it shine once again. You let it hang from the full length body mirror, rarely moving it in fear that it would crumble from your touch.
You smiled. Bucky. He seemed to easily take your mind off of Steve and your life. He had made your once miserable life beam with happiness. Not too mention you began falling for the man only recently, and he knew that as well.
"I should take a shower, I haven't done that in a few days." You mumbled, getting undressed and turning on the water, stepping in when the steam rose from over the curtain. It was a lengthy and slow shower, taking your time to lather and rinse, but repeating always seemed like a chore so you just scrubbed extra long.
You were in the process of drying off when your phone buzzed. At 5 in the morning. Who in their right mind would up so early on the weekend? Then again you weren't one to talk. Bucky's name was illuminated on the screen. Now this wasn't surprising. The man often texted you early in the morning, having his military sleep schedule embedded into his memory. He couldn't rest a minute over, never been able to, even with the freedom to sleep. So money for an alarm clock was never spent.
You decided, with your still half asleep mind, that calling him would make your morning routine go faster, so you wouldn't have to constantly stop what your doing to answer his text.
It only rung once, was he waiting for your call or text?
"Hello?" Oh ew self, morning voice.
"(Y/N)." The voice answered, obviously he just woke up as well, his tone was gruff and groggy, though it was attractive.
"Yeah?" You asked, picking out clean clothes to wear.
"Can you take me to that cliff again?"
You wondered what made him ask such a thing at this time of morning. You began to laugh. "Sure, why do you want to?"
"I heard there was supposed to some sort of eclipse or something tonight, and that place has the best view of the sky." Bucky's voice got more excited.
"One condition though, you have to come with me errand running." You grinned when he groaned.
"Why? Why me? Can't someone else go with you." Bucky whined.
"I... I don't have anyone else Bucky, you're all I got." You murmured, but luckily that didn't go through the receiver. "Because it's your 'gas money' for me bringing you to the cliff. It's a bit of a drive you know."
"Fine, what time do you want me over there?" He asked, you could faintly hear the old mattress squeak from his weight being lifted off it, and the bathroom light flick on.
"At eight is fine. The grocery store is open by then and we can unpack the food too. The perks of accidentally waking up early." You chuckled, smoothing out the outfit on your body.
"What? Why are you up so early?" Bucky's mouth was full of toothpaste.
You couldn't tell him it was another replay from that day, and you didn't have a viable excuse or quick lie, and your hesitation was what gave it away.
"Was it about him, (Y/N)?" Bucky questioned, firmly since he wanted the truth, but quiet enough to show sympathy.
"Yeah, it was Bucky, that same scene going over and over like a broken tape or something." You sighed, you couldn't fake this answer, Bucky always found out the truth.
"(Y/N), I don't want you to have those anymore." Bucky stated.
"You have told me that, but there isn't some drug or whatever to make them stop. They are memories." You said.
"Memories can be replaced, even forgotten. Tell me when these images or flashbacks happen, I can help." Bucky told you, obviously confident in his abilities to help you.
"That's too much of my personal-" You started, but were cut off.
"I don't care. I don't have many people in my life, I want the few that are with me to be happy and good.I like to keep tabs on them, like anyone does, even though there aren't many. My brain does have a lot of storage capacity, (Y/N), are you trying to indirectly say I'm dumb." Bucky instantly lightened the mood without fail.
"Indirectly? Well looks like I'm losing my touch, I was going for directly." You teased, you knew he was rolling his eyes at you.
"I'll see ya at eight, okay?" Bucky said.
"Yeah, at eight." You pushed the end call button, and giddy smile on your face. Not having seen Bucky in a while made you excited to see him, especially since he had been gone on almost a month long mission and just got back last week. Having minimal contact with your coworkers and your family always leaving the city to travel to exotic destinations without you, Bucky and only a handful of others were close to you.
You googled to see if there was actually going to be an eclipse tonight, just to make sure that you weren't making a long trek up to the cliff for nothing. Matter of fact there was, and it was going to definitely be the highlight of your day, well night.
Loud banging made you rush from your position on the couch, half eaten muffin in your mouth and your TV playing (Show) while you waited for Bucky. You scrambled to open to door, then relaxed once you saw Bucky standing in front of you, with a concerned expression on his face.
"What's up Bucky?" You asked.
"I really gotta use your bathroom." He stated unashamedly.
You swallowed your bite of muffin as a grin stretched on your lips. "By all means, come on in." Bucky nodded and rushed to your bathroom.
You laughed and sat back down on the couch having full intention to finish your breakfast. You heard the door open and saw Bucky walk out, sitting down on the couch next to you.
"Feel a little better?" You asked.
"Oh yeah, don't drink one of those Big Gulps from 7 Eleven an hour before you leave, walking here was a nightmare." Bucky nodded, settling himself on the furniture. He was obviously comfortable in your house, of course he still had manners, but he could feel more relaxed here since having known you for a little over two years.
"Jeez Bucky, your limb may be metal but your bladder isn't." You teased, earning an eye roll from him.
"Thanks for the reminder, (Y/N)." Bucky said sarcastically. "When did you want to leave?"
"In a minute, I gotta finish my breakfast and my show." You told him, biting into your muffin. "If you want anything, you know where it is, though I don't have much."
"I kinda figured, considering you told me this little shopping spree would take the entire day." Bucky got up anyway, peering around in all the cupboards and the fridge, even the freezer, grabbing boxes and containers, filling his arm's capacity. He sat down on the couch, reaching into the potato chip bag, eating the last of the contents.
"Well just eat the rest of my food why dontcha?" You sighed, stealing a chip from his grasp, he frowned and grabbed another.
"What? You said I could eat." Bucky pouted.
"Yeah yeah, I know I figured that you maybe already ate at your place and you were just feeling a little peckish from your walk over." You shrugged.
"Shh, (Y/N), this is a good part." Bucky put his finger to your lips, intently watching the screen of your show.
You rolled your eyes, pushing his arm away, feeling the metal underneath his sweatshirt. Why was he wearing such an article of clothing when it was this hot out? He had to be sweating balls walking over to your place!
"I mean I know you can't exactly be seen with your arm in public, but are you sure you want to wear a sweatshirt?" You asked Bucky.
"Oh! Thanks for reminding me (Y/N)! I almost forgot. Yeah, I was dying getting over here." Bucky took off his sweatshirt, placing it on the couch next to him.
You couldn't help but stare, it wasn't like a judging stare, but an interested one. You felt eyes on you and you looked up to see Bucky with a suggestive expression. "Wanna touch it?" Bucky held on his metal arm.
You nodded, running your hand up and down the smooth surface, stopping at his shoulder then back down to his fingertips. It was cold to the touch, but Bucky had tensed at first as if he felt your skin against his metal arm. You didn't know if this limb could feel like flesh and blood, if the technology was that advanced. The individual pieces that all fit like a puzzle, the red star on his shoulder, and the red scars that bordered the place were skin met metal. You could sense the definition of the muscle, this was not like the modern prosthetic arms that didn't have the look of a real arm, Bucky's did, mind the metal. It twisted and bent like real arm, but obviously what it was made of would never blend into society, so the only option was to cover it up.
You squeezed it a few times to confirm that it was actually pretty tough and not squishy like skin. Bucky flexed, the arm showing when he did. He just grinned and winked at you.
"Trying to feel me up (Y/N), and you didn't even buy me dinner." Bucky teased, you just slapped his arm.
"Oh shut up, and show me this thing." You said, letting go.
"Right, so S.H.I.E.L.D and all their fancy tech decided that to make it easier for me in public, especially in warmer temperatures, the would make me this sleeve looking thing." Bucky pulled out an almost invisible piece of cloth from his pocket, unfolding it. "They tried explaining to me how this works but I didn't even know half of the words they said so I just nodded and pretended like I knew what was going on." He snickered, pulling his metal arm through the sleeve, wiggling his fingers once they reached into the glove fully. "Basically the thing matches my skin tone, with all of the color and redness and even shows little scars or bruises to sell the 'skin'."
You watched him press a small button in the underside of the sleeve, slowly the fabric changed from clear to skin tone, you looked to see small little bumps or scars, patchiness and splotches that covered his arm. It looked incredibly real, even looking up close you couldn't tell that it was fake. The sleeve went past the hem of the shirt cuff, but stopped at his shoulder. It didn't cover up the part of his chest that was also prosthetic, so this invention wasn't the most useful for tank tops.
"Those agents had really outdone themselves, again." You said, a little amazed.
"I know. Steve kept on bugging them about it for months, since he wanted to bring me to all these places in the summer and stuff." Bucky told you. He noticed how you visibly tensed at the name, the both of you forgetting about him the the presence of one another.
"Bucky.... how is he?" You asked, looking him dead in the eye.
"(Y/N), do you really want to know?" Bucky was a little hesitant, knowing this could send you spiraling downward.
"I just want to make sure he is okay, I still care for him." This time you were the one who struck a nerve, watching Bucky's face drop and his shoulders slump, but he quickly regained his stature.
You knew Bucky did watch out for you. He kept you updated on his life and you did the same for him. Having little to no companionship in the both of your lives, you relied on each other. You had a few coworkers you tolerated along with some college friends you liked, you attempted to stay in touch with your parents, and Steve was no longer in your life. Bucky had it even worse. Steve was the only person, his family long gone, and the Avengers, but Steve was with them or on other missions. Bucky was assigned some missions but definitely not as many as the regular agents, he was kept under watchful eye from Fury, cameras placed in his house. He told you about this, in which you desperately wanted to help him, but you were no match to try and persuade Fury to let him have privacy.
Bucky cared for you deeply, and wanted to be more in your life than just a friend. You couldn't help but return those feelings, but you were more discreet. You felt whole again with Bucky, he couldn't replace Steve or the whole he left in your heart, but he filled it with his own compassion and kindness that you had forgotten when Steve left. Bucky could also feel himself wanting to see you more, he did things with you in mind, he didn't think of only bettering himself. You were one of the only people he could truly open up around and not be judged. He liked your playful attitude and easy-going demeanor, how you had a very relaxing atmosphere. You contrasted to his confident and more do first think later nature. Bucky acted impulsively on occasion, in which you had to step in to fix the situation. He was more carefree while you took some time to think about things. Similarities are what make people notice, differences are what makes them attract.
"He acts like nothing is wrong, or that you two had never happened. But I can tell something is off every time we speak, there is an uneasiness around us. I don't know if it is because I started to be with you more, or that he misses you." Bucky sighed, leaning forward with his elbows rested on his knees, face in his hands.
"Steve likes to pretend nothing is wrong. Even now, seven months later he is putting up a front, like he always did around me." Your face fell, remembering time and time again how Steve would come home acting like nothing went wrong that day, he wouldn't let you in to help, just put up a wall. "I felt so closed off from him, I couldn't get through that barrier."
"Even with you? I thought that maybe he may let you see some off him, but he does the same to me. Wearing that damn stoic expression." Bucky said, a little annoyed. "Not to bash the guy or anything, but Steve has the hardest time opening up to people, probably because the last time he did, it was with Peggy." You knew who Peggy was and how important she was to Steve, even though you never got to meet her.
"Yeah, maybe that was our downfall..." You looked away, this was not how you planned your morning to go.
"Hey now. Don't get all upset on me. I shouldn't have brought him up in the first place, it's my fault, c'mere." Bucky leaned towards you and pulled you in for a warm hug. You wasted no time doing the same. You wanted to just stay like this but you knew that you had errands to run and chores to do.
You pulled back, smiling. "Thank you Bucky. Now enough of this sad stuff, let's go buy some food, since you ate it all." You hopped up off the couch, Bucky following your lead.
"You said I could!"
"No."
"But (Y/N), I never knew they could be shaped like this!"
"You are a grown man Bucky, there are better dinner options."
"But they are dinosaurs!"
Bucky held up a large bag of dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, his first time seeing such a thing. He had gotten chicken nuggets before, sure, but never in the form of dinos. Now that is what you call modern technology.
You couldn't help but laugh, rolling your eyes as you smiled. "Fine, go ahead, we can have them tonight before we go to the cliff."
"Thanks (Y/N)." Bucky said, throwing them into the already packed cart.
You hummed in response, gripping the cart's handle in preparation to move it. You needed a bit of a start to get the thing going, since it was over flowing with food and the thing weighed as much as you did. You dug your heel into the tile and began to push off, while Bucky was laughing his ass off at your feeble attempt.
He walked over to you and put just one arm between yours, the other arm moved you out of the way, gently, and he pushed it for you. "You could have just asked." Bucky flashed you a grin.
"Oh shut up. It's only becasue of your metal arm." You whispered.
"No, that's my left one." He said, poking you in the sides with said arm.
"Ugh! You and your... your... arm!" You jumped away from his fingers, rubbing your waist.
Bucky chuckled and continued to push around the cart for you, while you ordered him where to go.
"Anywhere else, ma'am?" Bucky asked, following you around the grocery store.
"Just check out, then the bank, and Walmart, and the pharmacist, and..." You rattled on, naming off all of your stops.
"Okay wow, and I agreed to sign up for this." Bucky teased.
"Well hey, it's either an entire day running around with me and then the eclipse, or you can be stuck at home again, all bored." You shrugged, signaling  him to go into the next open cash register.
"Oh I will gladly take an entire day to go shopping as long as it is with you, (Y/N)." Bucky told you, giving you a wink.
You got all flustered, your cheeks were barely tinted with pink but you knew it was there. He always flirted with you before, but why were you just now letting the flirtations get to you? You always brushed it off before but now, now was a little different. Before you were with Steve, so you couldn't let such feelings affect you. But now, now you really enjoyed being with Bucky and you couldn't help but feel like he actually meant what he was saying.
"(Y/N)? Yo, (Y/N)? Wake up, you have to pay." Bucky shook you a little, tapping your cheek with his finger.
"Huh? What, what?" You blinked rapidly, looking up at Bucky.
"You have to pay, I already put all the stuff on the sliding thing." Bucky pointed.
"Conveyor belt, I told you this. You need to get out more." You patted his shoulder, you glanced at the moving objects. "Hey! You put the squishy stuff last! I taught you well!"
Bucky just smiled and had a cocky little look in his eye.
"Oh? Is he your son? Just turned 18 huh? Ready to be out on your own?" The elderly woman who was the cashier asked.
You looked at her, then at Bucky, then back at her, and then at a giggling Bucky. You swear you had steam coming out of your ears, and you tried your best not to rip that chick's face off.
"No, just a friend, actually." You said as politely as possible.
"Boyfriend actually." Bucky intervened, you gave him a quizzical look. Bucky just shrugged and smiled. You weren't going to say anything about it, so you just let it be.
"Oh I'm sorry, I don't have my glasses on I left them at home." The lady said, bagging the items as slow as humanly possible.
"Do I really look that old?" You whined, glancing at Bucky.
"Well I'm almost a century old, and we both look pretty young sooooo...." Bucky teased, earning an elbow to the gut courtesy of you.
"Ughhhh, I should have never asked." You rolled your eyes, rubbing your temples.
You quickly paid and had Bucky load up the cart with bags, hauling them out to your car. You stopped at home, putting all the items into their respective cupboards or fridge.
"Maybe I should have gotten this stuff last, but then there wouldn't be as much trunk room. Ehhh, it's fine. Off to Walmart, c'mon Bucky!" You grabbed his wrist, dragging him out of your apartment whilst he was trying to steal your newly bought food.
You first stopped at Walmart, needing purchases that were not food. You really were not the greatest on keeping track of your household items' stock, running out of cleaners, tissues, toilet paper, etc but forgetting about it and never writing it down. Bucky had no idea what these 'tampons' or 'pads' were. A female figure in his life clearly absent, ignorance is bliss. Bucky followed you around the stores with little to no complaining, which did surprise you, but maybe what he said back at the grocery store was true. That he rather spend a whole day shopping for the necessities with you than be alone. He stayed pretty close to you, always getting what you needed. But you also bought him some things as well, knowing his apartment had the bare minimum. Bucky made this shopping trip enjoyable, compared to what it could have been if you went alone. Yes, a lot of money was spent, a lot more than you anticipated, but it was worth it. Not that you really tried hard to save your money anyway.
"Hey Bucky, should I get- Bucky. Hey, dude you here?" Bucky was staring out past the aisle you were in, obviously focused on something.
You stood in front of him, trying to see what he was. His stance was rigid, shoulders tense, eyes un-moving. All you saw was a man that had a hat covered up by a hood walk into to a farther away lane, but you couldn't get a glimpse of his face. It was a little shady to wear your hood like that, but you couldn't tell what Bucky was so uptight about.
"Bucky, what's wrong?" You asked, concern written all over your face.
He looked down at you, his facial expression softened as he smiled. He put his hand on your waist, moving you back towards the cart. "I just thought I recognized someone, it's nothing, don't worry (Y/N)."
"Alright, if you say so." You frowned slightly, letting him gently push you to the cart.
Dinner was entertaining since you had Bucky's dino nuggets and you both had a fit of giggles since it was like you were kids again. Although he never had these as a child, he assumed he might if he lived in this era.
"Do we want food on our expedition to the cliff?" You asked, getting up off the couch, grabbing both of yours' plates.
"(Y/N), that's not even a question." Bucky replied, giving you a 'you stupid' look.
You held up your hands in defense. "Alright, jeez just thought I would ask." You took out a large cooler, filling it with drinks, sandwiches, and snacks.
The journey up to this private cliff was long, about an hour an a half since it was pretty remote and you had to hike up a steep hill as well. It was in the forest on the outskirts of the city, this little cliff out looked the entire land, far and wide. No one knew about this except for you and a handful of others, so you made it your own little space. No other humans, besides the ones you did like, went up there which gave you peace of mind knowing it wouldn't be vandalized. Your car would only go to about a couple hundred yards into the forest, so you made sure to wear tennis shoes instead of flip flops since your little incident from last time. Bucky offered to carry the cooler, and you didn't refuse the offer since the thing was super heavy. Like, how much can that guy eat? He scarfed down half of your fridge in the few hours home from shopping. You carried the blanket, nice and light.
Driving up to the forest, you sang along with every song the radio played. Bucky never told you, but he found it pretty adorable. The hike up was extensive, Bucky was totally fine but you were dying, go figure. You were fit, but obviously nothing compared to what Bucky was. He offered to carry you but you couldn't lose your dignity like that, nope. So you pushed through. You made it just as the sun started to set, perfect timing. You laid out the blanket as Bucky hungrily dug into the cooler, eating back his lost calories.
As the moon began to rise Bucky's eye slit up, like he had never seen such a sight before.
"Have you ever seen an eclipse, Bucky?" You asked, turning to face him. You were both seated on the blanket, close to each other.
"Very briefly back when I fought. I just remember a glimpse. The troops had just gotten back from a scouting mission and we were going to head into our tents, I saw it. Right when I was shoved into the tent I got a little look at it was amazing. It was so bright and beautiful compared to the bleak shit I had been seeing for months. It was like a little beacon or something." Bucky recalled.
You smiled and nodded, not really sure what to say. The two of you both watched the moon change, slowly but surely. You were glad to be sharing this moment with him, something that the both of you could appreciate in each others' company. This sight wasn't a first for you, but it almost was for Bucky, which made you feel even more special for being with him.
"Say (Y/N), I've just started to get some time off from missions and such. And I think I haven't been able to enjoy this world properly yet, since people are fond of trying to use me." Bucky looked over at you, a little twinkle in his eyes. "I was wondering if you could show me some places to eat, y'know, since you complain I eat all your food. Like good, solid, restaurants."
"Well let's see, there are a few good steakhouses, some pubs or bars, and buffets. Maybe you are looking for more of a formal dining? They cost a bit more." You pondered, toying with him, you knew his intentions but you wanted to tease him a little first.
"(Y/N), you aren't going to keep a man waiting are you? You're killing me here." Bucky whined, giving you some puppy dog eyes.
You laughed, patting him on the shoulder. "Sure, I would love to Bucky."
"You don't think this is too soon? Do you? I wanted to give you space to recoup and get a hold-" Bucky began to ramble, making sure you didn't make this decision in the heat of the moment.
"Bucky, I had seven months, they were a little brutal, but you helped me along. So yeah, I am sure." You smiled and nodded.
"Good. But you really going to have to show me places to eat because I actually don't know any nice ones." Bucky told you, looking a little sheepish.
You sighed, but it was a happy sigh. "I figured. This Saturday work? Like at 7?"
"Yeah, considering I don't have a job, or friends, or family. Yeah 7 works." Bucky smiled.
"You are so strange." You shook your head.
"Me? Strange? I am not the one who is going to a date with a 90 year old man!" Bucky teased, nudging you.
"You are not 90! You are but your body isn't! Ugh! Bucky!" You ran your fingers in your hair, pretending to be annoyed.
The night went on with Bucky flirting and you trying to be as smooth as he was but ultimately failing. You fell asleep on his shoulder, so when the moon was back to normal and it was already pretty late out, Bucky carried you and your equipment down the steep hill. It was nothing arduous for him, just embarrassing for you since he could have woken you up. You drove him home, and before he got out of the car he gave you a small kiss on the forehead, enough to get you a little giddy for the next time you could see him.
"Goodnight (Y/N)." Bucky waved at you as he got out of the car, walking into his apartment building.
"Night Bucky." You smiled and waved back.
The past week had been a little weird. You kept noticing that same shady dressed guy from Walmart, or at least you think you did. You saw him at work, at the coffee store, in the park. Why was this guy doing this? Who knew, you didn't think you were that interesting  or showy. You were starting to believe you had a stalker, but you couldn't think that now. You had a date to prepare for, and an outfit to pick, and a handsome man waiting for you just a few miles away.
You didn't have to dress up a whole lot, just a little nicer than usual. You decided on the closest steakhouse, nothing too expensive or flashy but a lot nicer than a fast food restaurant. Bucky would sure be pleased as well, knowing him and his infinite hunger, luckily they had an all you could eat buffet.
You picked up the phone, calling Bucky. Surprisingly he didn't pick up, so you tried again. "Bucky? Hello?"
"(Y/N)! Hey yeah hi." He panted.
"Were you just running?" You asked, a little skeptical.
"S.H.I.E.L.D sent me on a surprise mission this morning, really quick and simple, but they held me up at base for hours. I just got back." Bucky replied, you could hear the shower turn on. "I'll be ready in about twenty minutes."
"Alright, I'll see you then." You hung up the phone and shook your head. "Let's hope nothing like that happens during our little date."
Once the two of you arrived at the restaurant, Bucky's eyes immediately lit up upon seeing all of the food choices and the aroma of it all. You two were quickly seated and given menus, and Bucky wasted no time flipping through it like it was the best thing since sliced bread. You couldn't help but laugh, he was like a kid in a candy store.
"I assume you don't get out very often, hm Bucky?" You started, peering from over the top of the menu.
"No, it's always those cheap frozen meals that never thaw out completely. Yeah this, this is like a five star restaurant to me." Bucky replied, grinning.
"I'm glad to hear it. I'll take you out more then, let you eat more than half frozen dinners." You laughed.
"I should be the one taking you out..." Bucky huffed, still annoyed at his lack of a driver's license. "When I can drive-"
"Hello, I'm Adam, I'll be your waiter today." An early twenties man walked up to your table, holding a pen and a waiter pad in his hand. He was on the skinnier side, but pretty cute. "Can I start you off with any... thing to... drink?" Adam was clearly staring at Bucky, who in return didn't notice this at all.
"Yeah, I'll have a strawberry margarita." You said politely.
"A-and for you?" The man was now slightly blushing, barely even visible if you weren't paying attention.
"Whatever you got for beers." Bucky smiled, sending the kid into a doozy.
"A-alright, do you still need a few more minutes to order?" Adam tried hard not to make any eye contact with Bucky, looking at either you or the table.
"Yes please, that would be great." You said, Adam nodded and shuffled back to the kitchen.
You burst out in laughter, which confused Bucky. "He totally had the hots for you!"
"The hots? What's that?" Bucky asked, raising his eyebrows.
"He saw you, thought 'damn this guy is hot' and was blushing the entire time. Awe, so cute." You cooed.
Bucky just smiled and shrugged. "I'm so good looking that I make everyone stop and stare."
You sighed and giggled, knowing Bucky would come up with an answer like that. "Oh I wouldn't be so sure."
"Oh c'mon (Y/N), you can't say no to this." Bucky gestured to all of him, you followed his arm movements, obviously liking what you were seeing, and imagining what you could not.
"Fine, fine what can I say." You said raising your arms up in defense. "Okay, have you figured out what you want?"
"Yeah, I did the second we got the menus. It's called a steakhouse for a reason." Bucky nodded.
You hummed in response, your eyes finally landing on the perfect dish.
"Your drinks." Your waiter, Adam walked up to the table.
"Thank you." You said, taking a sip of your margarita, sighing in enjoyment.
"Can I take your order?"
"I will have (Food Choice) with a (side salad/soup/etc)." You told him, handing the menu over.
"A-and for you?" Adam was not looking Bucky in the eye.
"I'll have the grilled steak, medium-rare, with a baked potato with extra bacon, thank you." Bucky told him, winking when Adam took his menu.
"I'll be right back with your food." The waiter said softly, his blush very apparent as he scuffled to the kitchen.
"Bucky." You lightly kicked the man under the table. "Do not tease him like that." You scolded.
"What? It was harmless." Bucky said, grinning.
You rolled your eyes. "The poor guy probably had a heart attack or something from your little gesture."
You two were quickly served your food, Adam may or may not have helped with that. Bucky chowed down on his meal, but was clean and not too messy about it. You conversed back and forth through the entire night, and you couldn't have asked for anything better. Even though this was not a 'getting to know you' kind of a date, it was still nice to hear Bucky talk about his life and even some memories of his earlier days as well. He was definitely not shy about opening up to you, which just strengthened the trust between you two. You, as well, shared some of your difficulties in life and things from your past you never told him before. Bucky was lighthearted and enjoyable, never letting a moment turn awkward or dull. And Bucky found you to be just as fun-loving and enthusiastic as before, his fears never realized that maybe you only did this to appease to him. He was afraid that maybe you only went out so you could get your mind off of Steve, but in fact you genuinely wanted to be there, which boosted his self confidence.
"And your check, sir." Adam handed Bucky the little check book, fancy mints on the inside. The waiter was obviously feeling more bold when talking to your date. He was probably thinking that it wouldn't go well and maybe he could steal Bucky from you.
"Thank you." Bucky gave a heart stopping grin to the man, in return he busied himself with clearing your table.
You split the check, the both of you paying half because you didn't want Bucky to go broke on this date. You popped a mint in your mouth, rolling it around with your tongue to get more of the minty flavoring. You saw Bucky staring intently through the window, his eyes were squinted, lips drawn in a small grimace.
You raised an eyebrow, worried since this looked just like the scene in Walmart from the other day. "Bucky, is something wrong?"
"(Y/N), I'll be right back, okay? Stay here." Bucky, squeezed your hand, and walked out of the building. You followed his figure as far as you could see, with the sky being dark and the streetlights only reaching so far, you could only see him for a little while until he disappeared.
You sighed, hoping your wonderful night wouldn't go bad. You didn't want him to get hurt, you had suspicions that maybe it was S.H.I.E.L.D signaling Bucky for yet another mission. You desperately wanted to go find out but you obeyed his directions. That is until it got to be twenty minutes later and you had already eaten all the mints and your mind was swarming with bad thoughts.
"Alright that's it, (Y/N) to the rescue." You told yourself, grabbing your bag and heading out the door.
You retraced Bucky's footsteps as far as you could see him go. You stood alone on the empty street, no cars, no noise, no Bucky. You sighed. "Maybe I have to just go back and start from square one. He could have definitely gotten far, but he told me he will be back so that means he didn't leave within probably a five mile radius." You nodded, trying to tell yourself that everything as going to be okay.
You began to walk back on the streets when you heard a loud bang and the screech of a alley cat to your left. "Bingo."
You rushed over to the the noise, hoping you would find Bucky, unharmed. But instead you found a much more unfavorable sight.
Bucky was at the throat of Steve, and vice versa. Both men were obviously fighting, luckily only verbal. You didn't know what it might have turned into if you hadn't gotten there. Bucky was scowling, Steve just looked disappointed, his arms crossed over his chest as he glared at Bucky.
"Bucky? And Steve? What is going on?' You walked into the alleyway, so this was where Bucky had disappeared. You hesitantly inched forward. Bucky was the first to advance at you, his gaze softened as he moved towards you. You gave him a small smile as he stood by your side, but you couldn't take your eyes off of Steve.
"(Y/N)." Steve voice rung out, a sound you felt like you hadn't heard in so long, but it was only mere months.
"Why are you here Steve?" You asked, not mixing your emotions with this situation.
Steve looked away, not wanted to tell you the truth.
Bucky turned towards you, his eyes heavy, his lips pursed. "Y'know when you and I had our little outing? And when we were at Walmart I froze up and was staring at something? I was looking at Steve. He had followed us, but at the time I couldn't tell who it was. He was outside again, tonight, that's why I left." Bucky explained, Steve not bothering to look at either of you.
"It was you!" You pointed at the super soldier, who in turn gave you a glance. "You were following me around this whole last week and I thought I had a stalker. Why were you doing this Steve? This is definitely not like you at all, sneaking around in public spying on me." You became angry at the sudden realization, your voice turning into a growl.
"You were following her around?" Bucky's voice was dangerously low.
"I had to make sure she was safe." Steve defended, now glaring at Bucky. "But I couldn't blow my cover so I did it secretly."
"Your cover? You had to do it to keep her safe? Why start now? What, with (Y/N) being around me just instantly puts her in danger?" Bucky stepped forward, placing you behind him.
"I left her because I felt that she would end up getting hurt or used to get at me. I couldn't have that, I couldn't let (Y/N) suffer because of who I am. I could not protect her properly, that's why I had to leave, she knows this. Yet here you are, with (Y/N), like your past and who you are doesn't affect anything. It does put her in danger Bucky, I warned you before."
You stepped around Bucky, who made no attempt to hold you back, knowing you might snap at him if he did. "I am in no danger, we have gone through this a million times Steve. I don't care if he has a metal arm or not, or if he is a trained assassin who works for a government agency. Bucky cares for me. Obviously more than you did." You scoffed.
"Steve, you may have told me that I am no good for (Y/N), I know, I've said that to myself already. But she thinks so. She thinks I am worthy of her affection and kindness. I've seen the way she acts around me, it just proves my statements." Bucky smiled down at you, you did the same in return.
"Bucky, please, (Y/N) does not need to be caught up in all of our lives, it's too much for her-"
"When will you stop deciding everyone's life for them, Steve? You decided I was in danger, so you left, you decided Bucky is not able to take care of me, so you call him out, now you decided that Bucky is too much for me, so you are telling him to back off. You need to worry about yourself and your life. If you truly cared for me, you wouldn't have left." You cut him off, eyes threatening to spill it's tears.
"(Y/N)..." Steve's gaze went from stone old to sympathetic after hearing your outburst.
"She chose to be with us, Steve. She offered her time and support and amazingness to us, yet you thought that she wasn't worth your time. (Y/N) doesn't need protection, I realize that, but to have the confidence to say that if she is in any danger, you will go and bring her back and safe from harm, is what you were lacking. I know I can, but you decided it was too much for you." Bucky shot at his best friend.
Steve just sighed, giving the both of you one last look. "I'll stop lurking around, I'll stop trying to keep Bucky from you (Y/N), if this is what you truly want." Steve was obviously hurt, not only that the woman he loved so much was angry at him for his idiotic decisions, but that his best friend was also fighting against him.
You nor Bucky wanted to see him like this, but you knew that Steve had to get over you, as you were trying with him. He just put the thought of you deep within his mind, never confronting it or attempting to move on like you had done. Bucky once told you that Steve never talked about you since that day, and any mention of your name made him leave the conversation.
Steve began to walk away, giving you and Bucky one last look. "Bucky, if you say you can keep her from danger, you better keep your word, and (Y/N), I'm sorry for making that rash decision that night. I never realized how much I was hurting you."
You watched Steve walk out of the alley, down the same lonely road from which he came.
You looked up at Bucky, who's head was hung low, hand arms limp at his side.
"Bucky, what's wrong?" You asked, grabbing his chin and lifting his head up so you could see his face.
"Were all those things I said, back there, about you caring for me and thinking that I am worthy of you, was I right?" His voice was shaking, barely audible. "I never really doubted myself up until now, weird right? But with all those things he said, it makes me wonder if...."
You gasped, had he only said those things to get at Steve? That was how you did truly feel yes, but you thought he knew. "Bucky look at me." He watched his eye slowly meet yours, they were downcast, which broke your heart. "I do mean all those things you said about me. I do care for you, a lot. I do think you are capable of my kindness. But I didn't just say hollow words either. I don't care about your past, or who you were or what you have to do." You trailed your hand up his left arm, stopping at the hem of the sleeve he wore to make his metal arm appear normal. You pushed the button, with made the fabric go transparent, and slid it off his limb. "And I certainly don't care about your metal arm and if it affects your handsomeness." You tried lightening up the mood, which proved successful since Bucky let out a chuckle. "I mean of course I care about you, I just wanted you to know that all the things that you think are bad about yourself, I don't mind them. You can't erase who you were, but it doesn't bother me."
Bucky nodded, his lips forming a smile as he reached down to hug you, wrapping his arms tight around your waist. He buried his face in the crook of your neck, your hands running up and down his back in comforting strokes. You knew Bucky was broken, yet he considered you to be the glue to put him back together, which was exactly what he needed. But you weren't perfect either, and Bucky could see that, and he knew he could be the helping hand in solving all your life issues, and you in his. You both equally relied on one another, whether for support, love, or companionship. This was not a one-sided relationship, like your previous one. You had went to Steve for so many things, and he made some of your decisions for you, but he never asked for help back. Perhaps that was the item that broke the donkey's back.
"Thank you (Y/N)." Bucky whispered, pulling back enough so your foreheads touched.
"Anything for you, Bucky." You replied, smiling.
Bucky leaned in, his lips  just above yours. You had waited for this moment a long time, longer than you anticipated, since Bucky was one to make quick decisions without thinking of the consequences. But you waited for him, you could feel his hands gliding up your neck to rest on your cheeks, his fingers lightly drumming against the skin. You wanted him to make the first move, since he often complained that you were one to initiate things first. You puckered your lips slightly, but felt a soft pressure on the tip of your nose. Bucky had kissed the very point of your nose, a sweet little smooch. This was not what you were expected, but you would take it.
"I think you missed." You giggled as he pulled back, though his hands slid down to rest on your lower back.
"No my aim is spot on." He told you, a sly grin on his face. "But I decided to save it for a more romantic scene."
You began to laugh, shaking your head. "What? Is a dark alleyway in the dead of night not romantic enough for you, lover boy?"
"You are a funny one, (Y/N). I mean I could have done it the night of the eclipse...." Bucky trailed off, looking down at you.
"Then why didn't you?" You quipped.
"Well maybe it was because you fell asleep, on me, and I had to carry you back down to the car." Bucky replied.
"Shit! I was wondering how I got in there! Why didn't you wake me up?" You exclaimed, poking him on the cheek.
"Because you were too cute to wake up (Y/N), that's why." Bucky laughed, a blush on your cheeks.
"Shut up. C'mon, let's go home, I'm cold and my feet hurt and I'm tired." You said, yawning. "Youcanstayatmyplace." You began to walk back to the steakhouse, were your car was parked.
"What was that?" Bucky asked, leaning down by your face.
"I said you can stay at my place if you want. I don't feel like driving too much and I know you have clothes over there so..." You said quietly, embarrassed.
"Day one and I'm already staying over? Dontcha think we are taking things a bit too fast?" Bucky teased, tickling your sides.
"Stop! Bucky please, knock it off!" You laughed, trying to run away from his grasp, but he had a firm arm locked around your waist.
"Alright, alright. But I have a mission tomorrow morning so nothing fun tonight, okay? Well there can be some fun, just not too much, okay? I know how you get in the late hours of the night, (Y/N)." Bucky said, his grin never leaving his lips.
"You are impossible Bucky." You rolled your eyes, hopping into your car, Bucky following suit. "But I will probably be out the second we get home so, there is gonna be like no room for fun.
"As long as I'm with you (Y/N), it doesn't matter what we do." Bucky leaned over and placed a small kiss on your forehead, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ears.
"You flatter me too much Bucky." You replied, patting his cheek.
"But its your fault, you have all these wonderful qualities that I can't help but compliment." Bucky winked.
You blinked, a smile on your lips. "That was incredibly smooth."
"I aim to please, (Y/N), and I can always please you." Bucky laughed at his own joke.
"Anndddd there goes the cute, coupley moment."
