Adaline's P.O.V
I exited the book shop and locked the door behind me. I'd stayed back late today to categorize the new books, and had lost track of time. On top of that I'd also forgotten my umbrella. I looked out into the dark street, the lamps doing little to Illuminate the dark roads. I could only see a meter, a meter and half at the most, in front of me. I cringed and pulled my jacket up around my neck before I ran out into the rain. The book shop I worked at wasn't to far from my small apartment, but the streets between Marley's Books and my place were not a nice area to be wondering around at this hour. I quickened my pace the cold drenching through my skin. I reached a better lit area and continued past a few people crazy enough to be out in this. Due to the hot weather recently and summer that never seemed to want to end, when Winter finally rolled around, the storms came with a vengeance. I stopped to wait for a few cars to go past before I could cross. I went to step forward to cross when I slipped on the curb and fell backwards, only to not hit the ground. I looked up to greet the blue eyes of my rescuer. He helped me stand up straight again.
"Ah, thanks." I said shyly as I adjusted my coat. The man was handsom, with blue eyes and long dark hair, or that could've just been the rain.
"It's fine." He said as we kept eye contact for a few moments, before he quickly tore his gaze away, adjusting the cap on his head. "Um, you might wanna walk a little slower." He said before he turned and walked away. Just like that.
"I will." I whispered under my breath as I gazed after him in curiosity, before I too turned and continued, walking with a little more care as I finally made it home.
I stepped over the threshold of my small apartment. It wasn't anything fancy but it was home. Filled with all my memories through the years, including a small range of clothes on rales from different decade's. I took off my coat and hung it on the wooden coat rack beside the door, hanging my scarf with it. I was enjoying New York but unfortunately I would have to leave soon, thanks to my schedule. But it wasn't to bad, it felt like it was time for a change. I got myself a quick dinner and then headed to bed.
I stepped into the book shop the following morning to be given a huge pile of new books to shelve. I didn't mind it, the quiet of the shop, the smell of new books, I enjoy my simple job. I grabbed the wooden ladder and set it against a set of wall shelves before climbing up and beginning to stack the books. The bell above the store door jingled. Marley can get this one. I thought as I continued to stack. I reached to the step on the ladder just above the one I stood on to grab another book, when the step I stood on creaked. That doesn't sound too good. I carefully put one of my feet on the rung below and as I went to move the other the rung snapped underneath my divided weight. I gave a small squeak as I fell backwards only to be caught by strong arms. I looked up to see the man who caught me last night.
"We've got to stop meeting like this." I said with a chuckle as he stared at me a slight smile present.
"You need to be more careful." He said gruffly, almost angrily, but not quite as he put me down. I brushed some hair away from my face.
"I swear I'm not a cluts." I said with a laugh. "But thanks for catching me." I finished with.
"No problem." He said awkwardly as we just stood there. I shook my head to clear it. Manners.
"I'm terribly sorry, I didn't introduce myself. I'm Louisa." I said as I held out my hand. Until next month, then I'll be Annabel. He shook it with one of his gloved ones. His grip was very strong.
"James." He stated gruffly. I watched his pretty blue eyes scope around the room. I nodded my head as we stood in an awkward silence.
"Can I help you find something?" I asked braking the silence. He looked hesitant to ask before answering.
"Uh, yeah. Do you have anything on world war two, specifically Captain America and the, the Howling Commandos?" He asked slowly as he rubbed the back of his neck in awkwardness.
"A superhero fan. You've made a wise choice. I've read all there is on them and that time." I said as I smiled at him ignore is strange personality and lead him towards a different section of the small book store.
"Well we have this one it's more on the war itself and other facters to do with." I said as I passed him a book without even looking at him.
"Then there's these two. This one's on Captain America and this one's more the Howling Commandos and Captain America." I said as I pulled two more off the shelf and passed them to him.
"But we've also got biographies on a couple different people from the war, not always written by them, but recorded for them. We've got, Steve Rogers or Captain America of course, Peggy Carter, Union Jack, Jim Morita, Colonel Chester Phillips, Howard Stark, and we at one stage had one on Bucky Barnes. Might of sold out, might be some in the back though." I said as I admired our World War 2 section. James flinched though I didn't notice.
"Can you get me the Bucky one." He asked quietly as he looked at his feet, his hair and hat shielding his face.
"Ah, I'll check out the back." I said with a smile as I wondered into the back of the store. I spotted the last one on a pile of books in the back.
"Got it." I said as I walked back out to James. He glanced before quickly looking down again. I smiled a little awkwardly at the strange man as I handed it to him, as he added it to his pile, which now had the Captain America biography, the Howard Stark one and the Howling Commandos book.
He mumbled a small 'thanks' and I smiled a little brighter.
"Let me run those up for you." I offered as I held out my arms to take the books. He gently and hesitantly placed the books in my hands, as he followed me closely to the counter like I was going to run away with his precious books. I started scanning the books one by one, stopping briefly on the Bucky Barnes one. His handsome face printed on the cover. I scanned it last and checked the final price.
"Sixty two dollars and forty one cents." I said smiling up at him. He retrieved a wallet and pulled out a hundred dollar note. Looking up slightly he made eye contact with me as he handed over the note. My heart stopped as our eyes met. How had it just hit me. I knew this man. I blinked a couple times before looking down at the books in my hands then back up at him, forgetting all about the money. I looked back up at his face, and he knew I'd recognised him. He quickly shoved the money onto the bench and grabbed the books from the counter, turning quickly and taking off out of the store. I froze for a second before quickly following after him.
