Patrotic

Casey is Lady Patriot an Avenger who was born a Super Soldier after an incident involving her mother 7 months before she was born.

Lady Patriot is seen as the partner of Captain America, but Casey is so much more. She makes mistakes, she makes the wrong decisions, but that only makes her human, not a monster, so why does she feel like she's not good enough to work along side, The Captain America.

Third Person 1988
"Okay that should be right now." James said as he pulled the vial from the pharmaceutical mixer. The blue liquid swirled almost iridescent.

"Is it supposed to look like that?" Kathy commented with mirth as she raised a brow at him as she slid her glasses down over her eyes to get a better look at it.

"Yes," James drew the word out with a smile at his wife, shaking his head at her. The door to the Shield labs slid open and Fury entered in his usual attire of all black.

"How's it coming along Doc?" He asked not referring to either of them in particular. Kathy looked up at him and nodded with a smile, plucking the Serum from her husbands hands.

"Pretty good. We might be getting close." She said as she moved to the microscope. She used an eye dropper to place a single drop on a glass slide, looking at it under the microscope.

"It's looking good." She said as she twisted the magnification up one level. She took a drop from the vial labelled 'James T =D'. It contained James' blood, the one beside it containing Kathy's.

She let the single droplet fall in the centre of the formula under the microscope as she watched it.

"James, James!" She called as he rushed to her side as she pulled away from the microscope to let him look.

"It's bonding with the cells." She said, giddy like a kid as his face lit up upon seeing it. Furry moved to the other side of the table as the couple took turns watching the Serum and blood interact.

"So what's that supposed to mean?" Furry asked gruffly though the curiosity was evident. Kathy smiled up at him as she pulled her blue rubber gloves off, placing them in her lab coat pocket.

"It means, we may have just perfected the Super Soldier Serum Elite." She tried to contain her smile but failed miserably. James' brows furrowed as he continued to look through the microscope.

"So when do we begin trials?" Furry asked with hidden excitement as he folded his arms across his chest. Kathy shrugged her shoulders.

"As soon as possible." She stated proudly. James halted her excitement.

"Somethings not right." He stated as he pulled away from the microscope to let Kathy take a look. The cells were jutting around rabidly.

"No, no, no, no, no!" She exclaimed as she watched the cells react, sliding around rabidly. She jumped as one exploded.

"They're exploding." She said daunted as she leant back slowly as James took another look.

"So I take it that's not supposed to happen." Furry commented as he leant against the bench as Kathy stared into space, distraught. She snapped back into reality when the glass slides cracked and split. She shook herself before glancing down at the broken slides in disappointment.

"Guess it's back to the drawing board." James said as he leant back against the other table behind him. Kathy shook her head again and hardened her expression before walking over the the white board and grabbing the eraser, harshly rubbing everything out before writing '279' at the top and putting the cap on the back of the texta and turning to face the boys.

"So we start again." She said in resolve.

Two Weeks Later 11:00pm
"Com'on, com'on, com'on." Kathy hissed under her breath as she dropped her blood into the centre of the formula and watched it under the microscope. The cells began to bond and she smiled to herself.

"I knew you'd be the right one. Lucky number two hundred and seventy nine, of course." She said to herself as the Serum completely absorbed into the blood cells, mutating them but remaining stable.

"And start." She said as she pushed the start on her timer, two minutes counting down. She went between the timer and the microscope, biting her lip in anticipation. The cells began to vibrate and glow and Kathy widened her eyes in shock.

"No, no, no!" She said in exasperation as stopped the timer and pushed herself away from the bench. She'd stayed back late alone to work on the formula, doing the last touches herself and promising James she'd be back before midnight, a promise she could now keep.

She pulled off her gloves and tossed them in the can by the tables leg, and slid out of her lab coat, hanging it on the hook on the wall. She pulled her hair from its pony tail and grabbed her hand bag, making her way to the door before switching off the lab lights. As she turned towards the door, something caught her eye.

She turned back towards the lab to see the microscope was glowing a radiant blue. With furrowed brows she quickly made her way over to the bench in the dark, dropping her handbag behind the desk as she quickly put her eye to the microscope.

The cells had settled and were reacting normally. The Serum had completely bonded. It had worked!

"Oh MY GOD!" She shouted in excitement as she pulled the slide from the microscope to get a look at it with just her glasses. It was a miracle.

Quickly pulling new gloves on she switched on a lab lamp and brought one of the glass Rat enclosures out, placing it on the bench. She ducked off to the back room to attach the Serum vial to a sterile needle.

The door to the lab opened and closed and Kathy furrowed her brows. She'd told James to go home hours ago, in fact nearly everyone in the facility had gone home hours ago, only security and cleaners remained, and the cleaners had been and gone an hour ago.

She poked her head around the door frame in confusion at the sound of hushed voices.

"No bodies here it's fine." One man's voice spoke. Kathy ducked back into the back room and crouched down on the floor, needle gripped tightly in her hand as her heart sped up.

"Whens the Serum gonna be done?" The other demanded aggressively.

"I already told you, I don't know." The first harshly whispered back. Kathy looked down at the blue liquid gently glowing in the dark and quickly covered it in her shirt hem to prevent the light from attracting their attention.

"Well that's not good enough, Pierce is gonna have my ass if you don't give me a better answer!" The first threatened as he shoved the second agaisnt the wall with a thud. Kathy flinched and covered her mouth in fear as her body shook.

"What was that?" The first voice asked and Kathy stopped breathing, worried she'd made a nose.

"It came from outside." The second answered but she still didn't breath.

"This is your last warning. Hail Hydra." Said the first before the door slide open, then a few moments later closed again. Then open a second time a minute later, and closed again.

Kathy finally breathed but remained still, to scared to move. She unravelled the Serum from her shirt and stared down at it.

All their hard work, years of effort and now it would fall into Hydra's hands. Shield had been a fool to think Hydra had died out all those years ago. Captain America was gone and Hydra was rising again.

Kathy looked down at the Serum in her lap and a determined look took over her face. With narrowed eyes she cleared the air from the needle and plunged it into her arm. She watched as the blue glow flowed up her arm, disappearing and fading out around her shoulder.

"Oh shit." Her eyes widened as she realised what she'd just done.

She let the needle smash to the ground as she rushed to stand up, running to her bag and fleeing the lab, she had to get home, she had to explain everything to James.

Furry glanced over his shoulder as he sat oppisite the pair, Kathy with a scarf wrapped around her head and shielding her face, James in a hood and glasses, Furry in similar attire.

"No one thinks you survived the fire." Furry said as he slid the folder across the table to the couple. James placed it inside his jacket without even opening it. He knew what it contained. New identities, money, passports and Plane tickets.

"We owe you our lives Nick, thank you." Kathy said as she placed her hand over his. He gripped it for a moment before they both pulled back, Kathy resting her hand on her expanding stomach.

"Just keep in touch, so I know your okay." Fury said as he looked at the pair, then Kathy's growing belly.

"We will." James answered with a smile as he took Kathy's hand and they left the table, quickly disappearing into the busy crowds of New York.
