Chapter 15
(Side note: Rhodey had already visited Tony a month prior to this.)
—Two Years and Three Months after "The Decimation"—
Two days after the little incident at Thanos's planet, everybody returned safe. Bruce, Tony, Rocket, and Nebula have been working full time on the time device and it was nearing its completion. All the others needed to do were wait and not attract any major news outside of the Avengers Headquarters.
Steve was inside the training room, multiple punching bags placed on the floor. After some push-ups and sit-ups, he grabbed a punching bag and hung it on the ceiling. With bandages already in his hands, he started punching all his anger into the bag.
Everyone who went to Thanos's planet were scarred. Clint was more insecure than before. Natasha has been more aggressive in her training. Rocket has talked less and worked more. They were never the same when they went to find Thanos. None of them would even say why.
Bruce, who was taking a break, went over to the noise that was produced by Steve's hands touching the hard punching bag. He had a cup of coffee in his hand and leaned on the door frame.
"Do you know why?" Bruce asked, watching Steve work.
"About what?" Steve said, eyes still focused on the punching bag.
"Why none of them are speaking enough. It's like you brought in a whole new group of people."
"They won't spill. I tried to ask Natasha but she doesn't want to talk with me. Same goes for Clint."
"We tried Rocket, but he only speaks when he needs something. Do not even bother asking him about what happened," Bruce lightly shook his head and sipped on his coffee, "that animal can kick ass."
"You just noticed now, Banner?" Steve said, starting to produce loud noises on the bag, "Have you seen Danvers?"
"Last time I saw her, she was talking with Nebula. At first I thought Nebula was going to be a pain in the ass, that's what Tony said," Bruce paused, "But so far she's been quiet and all work."
"She just wants this over. Just like you. Just like me." Steve panted as he took a short break, "Everybody in this building wants this to end."
"That's true, I would say." Bruce walked closer to Steve so he could speak in a quiet tone, "So, have you talked to Tony?"
"No. I haven't." Steve muttered, throwing a hard punch on the bag which knocked it off the chain. Sand started flowing out of the top of the bag as Steve watched, "I don't plan to either."
"It's been three months, Steve. Three months since he's back and you two haven't fixed the shit that you left two years ago."
"If only you were there, Banner. You would understand why we aren't talking." Steve said.
"If it's about blamed friends and dead parents, that's all in the past, Steve. You really think that you can bring it back?"
"My friendship with Stark, do you really think that we can bring it back?" Steve said, which left Bruce speechless, "Just as I thought."
"Somehow, some way..." Bruce looked at Steve, "You're going to find-"
"Hey Bruce!" Scott called from the doorway, "Tony's calling you. He wants you right now."
"Tell him..." Bruce said, waving his arm around, "I'll be there in a few."
"Got you." Scott pointed at him and started walking towards the lab.
"I hope that sometime he'll actually call you." Bruce said, walking away.
"Keep dreaming, doctor. Because it will only stay there." Steve said, hanging another bag on the chain.
Tony and Nebula were working on the time device, as per usual, while Rocket was working on a body armour. The device was just a few wires from finished and they were relieved. Nebula placed down the wrench and leaned on the table to check on the tablet. Tony was hammering a vibranium plate on the device.
"So, when are you planning to talk to Rogers?" Nebula asked, scrolling through the requirements for the device in the tablet.
"How about never." Tony said, still working on the device, "You're going to have to give me a good reason to talk to him."
"I'm just asking. I don't care if you guys talk or not." Nebula scoffed. "We're almost done. Just a few more platings. Rocket!"
Rocket looked at Nebula with a angered face but didn't say a word. He was using a blowtorch on something he was making on the table.
"Can you please hand me the blowtorch?" Nebula asked with a sarcastic tone.
Without saying a word, Rocket threw the blowtorch at Nebula who barely caught it. Tony glanced at Rocket and shook his head.
"You have something to say, Rocket?" Nebula asked.
Rocket shrugged and continued adding some details to his body armour. Nebula continued to attach new platings onto the device and there workshop worked smoothly. After some more fixing, Bruce entered the room with a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Yes? You were calling me Tony?" Bruce asked innocently, walking towards the two.
"Your shift." Tony wiped the sweat of his face, "It's your turn."
"My turn? It's only been fifteen minutes." Bruce argued.
"C'mon Banner. Don't be a bitch and just take my shift." Tony said, grabbing the towel on the desk and wiping his arms. Bruce scoffed and placed down the coffee to grab the hammer on the table. "There you go. The doctor is working."
"Be thankful I'm nice today." Bruce muttered.
"You're nice everyday." Tony walked outside the lab and saw Rhodey walking inside the building. Tony smiled when he entered. "What's the news, Rhodey?"
"Tony." Rhodey smiled. "I knew I would see you the first thing I entered."
"I'm the main prize, am I right?" Tony chuckled and grabbed one of Clint's beers on the living room table, "I've been working day and night."
"It's alright, as long as we get what we want." Rhodey said. Tony threw another beer at Rhodey and he grabbed it. "Just like old times, huh?"
"Just like old times." Tony repeated and chuckled, connecting their beer bottles. "I can't wait for this to be over."
"I took a leave from the government. They're being a pain in the ass, I swear." Rhodey said, sipping some beer, "The leave will end once this will end."
"Pretty good timeline. Are you planning to quit after this?" Tony asked.
"I don't think so. As long as I love it, I'll keep on doing it." Rhodey smiled. "A lot of people are going to be proud of you, Tony. A lot."
"Really?" Tony joked. "List them."
"Happy, May Parker, the President..." Rhodey started counting with his fingers, "the New York, Pepper..."
"Shit." Tony got up immediately and started running towards his room.
"Hey! Where are you going?!" Rhodey shouted which alerted Bruce, Rocket, and Nebula in the lab.
"Pepper!" Tony shouted from the distance.
—5 hours later—
Steve was in the gym, heavily sweating and tired. He had gone through eleven punching bags. There was a thought in his head, the end of all of this. All he could think of was having a dance with Peggy, which seemed like the beginning, not the end. There were so many flashes in his head.
The image that stuck to his head was a tall flaming stick. Behind it, there were flashes of green light coming. After that, it was the dance. He was sitting there, collecting all the pieces but couldn't put them together. His focus was placed off when Carol and Bruce called him in the gym.
"Rogers! Come here!" Carol shouted in the doorway. Steve grabbed his towel and started wiping himself. Carol looked behind him and saw a large part of the gym was under sand, "You better clean that up."
"Save that for later, Danvers. What is it?" Steve asked.
"They're done." Bruce said and Steve looked at him with confusion.
"Done with what?"
"The time device."
"Call everyone. Bring them to the living room." Steve said, walking inside the room itself. Carol stayed with him while Bruce went to call the others. Nebula and Rocket went outside the lab, "So, how does it work?"
"It's basically a modified ship. The ship will shrink on the platform and come out to the time you want. The platform stays with us." Nebula explained. She explained the circular straps, "You attach that on your hand so you still remain in this reality."
"Perfect." Steve said, waiting for the others. After a few moments, Natasha, Clint, and Scott arrived. "Alright. Settle down."
Everyone took a seat on the couches and made themselves comfortable. With no surprise, Clint, Natasha, and Rocket did not say a word. Scott seemed excited. Thor still looked in pain.
"Where's Stark?" Steve whispered to Nebula.
"Went out with Rhodey to go somewhere. I don't know."
"We don't need him anyway." Steve fixed himself and looked at them. "The device is finished. We can go back. Stop all of this from happening. I know what each of you have gone through in the past two years. You just want all of this to end. I understand. Me too, I want everything to stop and continue with a normal life. This is our chance to finish what we started. I don't give a damn if you don't trust me. I want you to give a damn to end this."
"When do we start." Natasha asked.
"Right now. Gear up!" Steve said, walking away from them. He called Natasha who was on the way to the armoury, "Hey, do I have any suit that I can use?"
"Follow me."
