Chapter 14
—Two Years and Three Months after "The Decimation"—
On a Tuesday morning, Steve and Scott were playing chess in the living room. Tony had been sleeping in his room for eleven hours after working on the time device for two days straight. Natasha, Carol, Rocket, Clint, and Nebula were all doing their own activities outside of the facility.
After several moves were done between the opposing sides, the doorbell rang. Steve and Scott stopped playing and stood up to answer the door together. When they opened it, a worried Valkyrie and Bruce stepped inside.
"It's been a while since we've seen you, Banner. What have you been up to?" Steve asked, as Bruce and Valkyrie hurried inside.
"Intergalactic space shit." Bruce said as if he was traumatised. "That isn't the point. The point is we can't find Thor."
"Thor?" Steve asked and looked at Valkyrie, "What happened?"
"Thor? The tall, good-looking guy?" Scott asked and they all nodded, "Sad to hear."
"We've been spending almost three months in Oklahoma, gathering what soldiers we found from the Asgardian refugees. Three days ago, we couldn't find him in." Valkyrie informed.
"Was there a place he said he was going to go or something related to that?" Steve asked once again.
"Nothing. He didn't say anything about going anywhere." Valkyrie sighed, "But the past few month he has been talking about destroying a peaceful palace."
"Palace. Palace." Scott continued to repeat himself, "Yeah, nothing comes into mind."
"Thanos. He's been living in exile." Steve said, "Peaceful. That's what I learned from Nebula. He always wanted to live in peace once he was finished."
"And where can we find this peaceful palace of his?" Valkyrie asked.
"Are there any missing ships at your place?"
"Yeah. The one Thor's using. That's what he probably used to go to Thanos's palace."
"We need to borrow one of your ships." Steve said. Valkyrie nodded and left the building to get back to Asgard. He looked at Bruce, "Once Valkyrie gets back, I need you to track Thor's ship."
"I can do that." Bruce said and looked inside the lab, "Did you chan-"
"Stark said not to question it." Steve said and Bruce did not reply. He then looked at Scott, "You stay here with Nebula. I'm bringing Natasha, Clint, Carol, and Rocket."
"No, I want to go with you, Cap. Just one mission, man." Scott complained.
"I need someone to watch over Stark and Nebula. They're both exhausted from whatever the hell they're making. Banner needs to work on the tracker. Just one mission, Scott." Steve pleaded, "The next important mission that comes up, you'll be in it."
"Fine." Scott muttered and slowly walked towards the bedrooms to inform the heroes.
—Unnamed Planet—
Thor was standing in silence as the ship door opened. Light consumed the dark corners of the ship and vegetation could be seen immediately. Thor tried to calm himself down. There were some beautiful plants awaiting for him outside so he slowly, and sluggishly walked outside the ship.
The cliff he was on was directly beside an ocean. It was flowing beautiful and you could see different kinds of sea creatures jumping in and out of the water.
But Thor was there for another purpose. He was holding Stormbreaker in his hand and in the far distance, there was a habitat. He began to walk, nothing left to lose. Thor walked through the hills and mountains with ease, not dropping a single sweat. Animals were gathering around him like he was some kind of prophet. He ignored them and went on his journey.
After several minutes of walking through vegetation and hills, he was near the house. There were some crops broken down after what seems to be a storm. The scarecrow was what frightened him the most. It was like he was seeing the past being reincarnated; which was really happening. It was time.
"Thanos!" Thor shouted with no fear, walking towards the cabin, "Thanos! Come out you bastard!"
There was no response and no movement inside the cabin. Thor grew uneasy and slowly walked towards the door. He opened it, and to his surprise, there was no one there. There were some things that you need to stay alive inside. A campfire, bed, workbench, etc. But Thor noticed one significant detail: no gauntlet. There wasn't a trace of the gauntlet to be seen inside.
After searching the whole cabin, Thor came up empty. There was no sign of Thanos and it seemed like he had left already. Thor walked outside of the door. Suddenly, a large figure slapped him across the face and Thor flung through the house.
Thor, who was hurt, stood up and prepared to fight the enemy. Thanos walked around the house with the gauntlet on his left, and a sharp weapon on his right.
"You're more geared up than last time, Mad Titan." Thor said with a smile.
"I grow insecurities as well, God of Thunder." Thanos said. "Let's just hope that you learned to aim for the head."
"I have learned it, alright. You big bastard." Thor charged at Thanos with Stormbreaker and swung at him.
Thanos deflected the axe with his weapon and used the Power Stone to knock Thor back. He tried to use the Reality Stone on Thor but he used some of Stormbreaker's thunder to reflect it. After a battle between Reality and Thunder, Thor jumped at Thanos with two heavy swings on his chest.
Thanos stumbled a little, but he quickly got balance and struck Thor with his sharp weapon. Thor grew a wound on his arm and Thanos used the Reality Stone to make the grass Thor is standing hold him down.
"Is that all you got, Mad Titan?!" Thor shouted like he wanted more.
Thanos threw a punch with his left hand which brought Thor to the ground. Thanos continuously punched Thor in the face until he countered it with a swing of Stormbreaker. Thanos hit the side of the cabin, and Thor saw an opportunity. Thor gathered all the thunder Stormbreaker had and released it on Thanos. But being the smart being he is, Thanos raised the gauntlet towards the incoming projectile and absorbed it with the Power and Reality stones. Thor was shocked, and Thanos released the thunder back at Thor using the Space stone.
Thor flung back onto a solid rock with no weapon in his hands. Thanos recovered from the blows that Thor laid on him and walked towards the injured Asgardian.
"Quite the battle, Asgardian. You can put up a fight." Thanos said, checking on his sharp weapon.
"Who said I couldn't?" Thor joked, smiling at Thanos.
"I did." Thanos chuckled. "Quite interesting that you found me."
"Didn't know you were the peaceful type."
"You only know the person if you actually talk to them."
"Strong words coming from you." Thor tried to sit down.
"Ah-ah-ah." Thanos placed his hand on his shoulder, "We aren't done here, Asgardian. I want you to tell the others that I'll give them time. Time."
Thanos stabbed Thor through the stomach with his sharp weapon which left Thor gasping for air. Thanos withdrew the weapon, and walked off into the distance. Thor was fading, and groaning from the blood that was exiting his body.
"Time." Thor muttered.
—4 Hours Later—
The heroes entered the atmosphere of the planet that Thanos inhabited. Bruce tracked Thor's ship by using another ship that had the same model. They landed near the cabin and on the riverbank that was under the cliff. Carol, Steve, Natasha, Clint, and Rocket exited the ship and walked towards the building. The atmosphere was stable enough for all of them to walk on.
When they reached the top, the cabin collapsed. There was a scarecrow stand but there was nothing covering it. Steve and Carol looked for Thor nearby and eventually saw him on a rock. Steve ran over to him and Carol followed.
"Thor, you alright?" Steve asked, looking at all the blood he had poured out, "How are you not dead?"
"I'm a..." Thor softly said and coughed, "Asgardian. We don't die easily, Captain."
"Well you need to get patched up." Steve placed Thor's arm over his shoulder and looked at Carol, "A little bit of help."
"Got you." Carol placed Thor's arm on her shoulder as well, "We're going to bring you back to Asgard."
"You three!" Steve shouted as he struggled to bring Thor, "Search for Thanos!"
Rocket saw a path leading towards mountains in the distance. He followed the path which made him go through some trees and hills. It wasn't too far from the shack, but it was hidden. He ended on the shoreline where there was a small building. It was small but it had quite the view of the seaside.
"Thanos, you big fat bitch! Get out of there!" Rocket assured no one was there. He got no response.
Rocket slowly walked inside and the small shack was empty. There was nothing there, it was just an empty space. It was quite old, cobwebs were growing in the corners and it was creaky.
"You're a experiment, rodent!" A shadow shouted.
"Who's there!" Rocket shouted, aiming his weapon all around the place, breathing heavily. "I'll blow your goddamn brains out!"
"You are a failure! You were never supposed to be born!" More shadows called.
"Stop it!" Rocket dropped his weapon and leaned on the wall, slowly dropping to his knees. "Please, stop." Rocket muttered. He started sobbing on the floor. "Stop calling me!"
On the other side of the cabin, there was a mountain where Thanos would occasionally be mining. There was a small dirt path that led to that place which Clint followed. On the top of the mountain, he could see the endless fields of crops.
Clint dropped through the small hole in the mountain. There were red glowing mushrooms sticking through the walls. Clint avoided it and continued diving deeper.
"Clint." A soft voice whispered.
It frightened Clint which made him bring out his bow. He loaded it with a arrow and there was small movement farther down the cave.
Suddenly there was a child on front of Clint. It frightened Clint for a second, but got over it after four seconds and aimed at the hopeless child.
"Wait!" The child shouted, "Are you really going to shoot me, daddy?"
"Lila? Wh-what are you doing here? Aren't you supp-su..." Clint squinted and looked closer, "supposed to be at home?"
"I'm lost daddy." Lila muttered. "I can't find our home."
"Look, um... I need..." Clint started stuttering, "Goddamnit! Why are you here?!"
Lila began to cry so she leaned on the wall. Clint felt guilty, so he walked towards his daughter and began hugging her.
"It's alright, baby. Daddy's here." Clint stroked Lila's hair.
"Why did you leave mommy? And Nathaniel and Cooper?" Lila cried.
"I tried my best, baby. I really did." Clint began to cry and leaned on the wall. Lila faded and left Clint crying on the floor, weapons dropped, and darkness consuming him.
Out in the open fields, Natasha was looking outside the forest. She was looking at the river bank where tall trees were located. There were a group of cute animals coming across Natasha.
"Hey, little fellas." Natasha smiled at the animals. They were then furious and began to run into the forest. For some unknown reason, this made Natasha upset.
"They are afraid of you Natasha. You're doing great." A voice said in the wind.
"What if I don't want to be feared? What if I want a normal life?" Natasha asked, small tears coming out of his eyes.
"Then why are you in this program, hm?" The voice argued. It also seemed upset, "Are you disrespecting my authority?!"
"No, ma'am." Natasha answered softly, dropping to the ground and began to weep softly. "I just... I just want to live."
"Then you have to kill to do that, child. Now make me proud."
"I will, ma'am. I will." Natasha muttered, standing up and returning to the ship.
