Cap:

Alternate Ending for CACW

In this reality, none of the Avengers were arrested at the airport since they surrendered as soon as Captain America and Bucky Barnes left.

I stare into the eyes of two of my best friends.

To destroy from the inside, is to destroy forever Zemo had said. He wasn't just talking about the Avengers, he was talking about me.

I love them both. Tony and Bucky. Both of them are my best friends, and both of them are something... more.

I can't choose.

No matter who I pick, I will lose the other.

There is only one I can choose, though. I turn to Bucky, and stick out my hand. "I'm with you until the end of the line, Buck." I say.

Then, I turn around, eyes welling up and smash my shield into Iron Man's heart.

"Goodbye, Tony."

4 am, the next morning.

I sit in the darkness of an abandoned HYDRA facility. How low I have fallen. Bucky is back, but he went to Wakanda. He left me. I chose him, but he left me. Am I being selfish? To want him here with me? To risk the world being in danger once again just to have him by my side. Is it selfish to want anyone with me when I have hurt everyone I interact with? I toss the bottle of liquor I had just downed across the empty room and listen to the echoes of the shattering glass bounce around the room, haunting me. I chose Bucky. Is it wrong to want him to stand by me when I put him above all else. Is it wrong to want someone standing with me? Anyone? I am alone. I made too many mistakes. I've hurt too many people. I am done. I have failed my country, my friends, and everyone around me. I am no longer Captain America. I don't deserve that title. From now on, I am just The Captain, just a captain. I walk over to the black, metal wall of the former HYDRA training room and sit down with my back to it. I can feel the ice cold metal wall on my back, only slightly nullifying the burning pain in my chest. I drop my head in my hands and finally let out the tears I have been holding in for the last 75 years, for I am utterly alone and need hold back no longer.

Meanwhile, at the Avengers Compound.

A beep sounds throughout an empty room as a red light begins to glow and a man clears his throat.

"Hey, Steve. It's me, Tony. Well, you probably already know that, but yeah, it's me. I am just calling to say, I'm sorry. I know we are both stubborn in our own ways, but I am going to go out on a limb here and saying sorry." Tony sighs. "I don't say that often, but I said it now. For you, Steve. Only for you. I know you chose Bucky and I know why. A few years are nothing compared to a lifelong friendship. I want you to know that the amount of hypocrisy you showed frankly surprised me, but I am starting to understand why you lied. Steve, Cap, you don't have to protect everyone and you sure as heck don't have to protect me. I hope you find yourself happy wherever you are, whoever you find yourself with. You will be happy, Cap, you deserve it. Out of all of us, you do. Goodbye, Steve."

Tony presses a button and the red light dims to nothing.

"I hope you don't feel as alone as I do." He says to the empty room.

Tony presses another button on the holographic monitor in front of him and turns around, facing the white, marble wall.

"Mr. Stark, are you sure you would like to delete this voice recording?" Friday asks him.

Tony hesitates, walking towards the wall "Yes..."

He sits down, back against the wall, his head falling into his hands. "Yes, I would." A sound dings on the monitor and with a swish, the message Tony had just recorded was gone. Tears begin to fall down his cheeks and Tony doesn't bother to wipe them away. He can feel the ice cold white marble wall on his back, only slightly nullifying the burning pain in his chest.

"-And Friday, delete all footage of this room from today, when I leave this room." Tony says, voice cracking slightly.

"Yes, sir," the AI responds almost solemnly.

As Tony states the command, a woman in the control room quickly brushes a tear from her eye. As she is about to leave, she looks at the two monitors in front of her once more, before closing the two tabs she had opened. The woman walks out of the room, closing the door behind her.

When the woman leaves, Hawkeye drops down from a grappling arrow that he had recently thrown at the ceiling. He reopens the door, wondering what made the world's best spy shed a tear. Clint walks over to the computer and checks the search history.

"So unprofessional," he shakes his head. Hawkeye reopens the two tabs that the woman had opened and his eyes widen in shock. The live camera feed is still in progress and Clint sees the two videos side by side.

Clint sees the two leaders of the Avengers sitting, leaning against a dark metal and a light marble wall respectively, heads in their hands. Both men are continuously wiping tears from their eyes and trying to regain their composure. Hawkeye's eyes begin to water as he watches the two people he respects most in the world in such a broken state. Suddenly, Iron Man and Cap both look up, taking a deep breath.

"Goodbye, Tony," Steve Rogers says while Tony Stark simultaneously says, "Goodbye, Steve,"

Clint Barton breathes out the breath he had been holding.

He closes the tabs and walks out of the quiet, dark security room.
