Chapter One

Click. “Time to get up, Lizzie! C’mon, you don’t want to be late for school!”

Groaning, I sat up. “Okay, okay, I’m up, Dad. You can leave now.” I glanced over at my dad who didn’t leave.

“Get up means get out of bed.” He smirked and started tickling me, sending me into bursts of giggles. I swung my legs over the side of the bed when he stopped. I was mostly awake now, and Dad saw that and left, closing the door behind him. I rose and picked a pair of sweatpants out of my closet and a t-shirt out of my dresser.

After I had changed and put my dirty blonde hair into a sleek ponytail, I grabbed my coat, backpack, and lunch money and flew out the door. “I had better not be late!” I said to myself. Right then, the bus sped up the road but the driver must not have noticed me. “Arg!”

Ten minutes later, I arrived at the school, speedwalking to English class. A few people snickered when I arrived, but I ignored them, making my way to my seat in between my two best friends, July and Clifton.

“The teacher’s late again?” I asked.

“Yeah, and you’d better be thankful for it or you’d be getting a top-notch lecture.” Clifton pointed out.

“Yeah, I bet she’d be so angry for all the tardies you’ve given her,” July said with a hint of annoyance in her voice.

Clifton laughed. “Take a chill pill, Jello.” He playfully punched July. July laughed but stopped when the teacher walked in.

“I’m very sorry for being late, students,” she started up on her lame excuses. “It just so happens that my pet… er… my pet bird bit my baby son.”

“Here we go…” I muttered loud enough for my friends to hear, making all of us giggle.

After school, July, Clifton and I were walking home together. We lived right next to each other-my house in the middle with July’s house on one side and Clifton’s on the other. July was rambling on and on about her favorite TV show: Avatar the Last Airbender. She was literally obsessed, but Clifton did not approve of the show at all. Whenever she started talking about it, Clifton would either zone out or say how unrealistic the concepts of the show were or whatever. I, on the other hand, thought it was pretty cool. I mean, I wasn’t obsessed like July, but I would gladly watch the show when we hung out at her house without Clifton. To be totally honest, I’ve watched every episode at least once.

“…and I was just heartbroken when Zuko betrayed Iroh! Like, why would he-“

“Hey, Jello! Would you please stop ranting? Yeah, I know you’re obsessed and all, but couldn’t you talk about celebrities or drama like a normal American teenager?” Clifton interrupted her, and his patience was wearing loose. July looked slightly hurt for a second, but she covered it up with a small smile.

“Yeah, you’re probably right, Cliff. I’ve tortured you long enough by talking about it! Hey, look we’re at our homes. Buh-bye!” She rushed into her house.

“You know you hurt her feelings, right?”

Clifton sighed. “Yeah… I know. I’ll apologize later for snapping at her. I just get so irritated when she goes on like that.”

I gave him a small hug. “Yeah, don’t worry. It’ll work out-it always does.” I left him and walked to my house, giving him a small wave as I entered my house. I smiled to myself. I had such an excellent life-awesome, loyal friends and family, and even if things didn’t work out all the time, it will eventually be fixed.

I heard my phone go off, and quickly picked up. “Hello?”

“Hey, Liz!” it was July. “Clifton has just apologized. He’s going to join us tomorrow at my house. And in place of watching Avatar, we’re going to go ice skating!”

               “Yay! I can’t wait! You’re mom’s driving?”

               “Yeah.”

“Great! See you there.” I hung up. Things just keep getting better and better.

I went to bed that night still smiling from the thoughts of the good things in my life.

I woke up with a jolt. Something wasn’t right… something in the air. I sat up quickly, and looked around. The room looked blurry, and there was lots of gray smoke leaking into my room from the edges of the door. I coughed, inhaling a bunch of smoke. A fire! There must be a fire! What about Mom and Dad? There’s no time for that, I thought. How am I going to get out of here? I remembered all those fire drill things they taught in elementary school. I stepped off my bed and felt the doorknob with the back of my hand, and immediately recoiled. It was burning! I went over to my window, but paused. Everything in my room was going to be burned up, destroyed. I went over to my closet and quickly pulled out a backpack. I threw some jeans and shirts, plus my favorite coat, into it, along with a few pictures that were taped to my wall. I threw a small stuffed animal my best friends had given me, and my notebook and pencil case. I threw on my sneakers, too. I glanced at the door and coughed, but I noticed there was light emitting from the hall. The door started to make crackling noises, and I froze behind it in fear. This couldn’t be happening! I rushed to my window and struggled too much to open the blinds, so I just ripped it off in desperation. Clutching my bag, I attempted to open the two handles to open the window all the way, but they wouldn’t budge. I swore, wishing I asked for them to be fixed. I took a fleeting look at my door just as it fell down, letting the scorching flames enter the room, spreading wildly. I coughed. This is it, I thought, hugging my backpack. This is the end. Almost sixteen years on the earth… and that’s it. My time has come. Tears streamed down my face as I thought about my two best friends. I coughed again and again, as sweltering heat surrounded my body. Everything went black.
