The frozen boy and girl

Narrator Katara

Water.

Earth.

Fire.

Air.

My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only the Avatar could stop the ruthless Firebenders, but when the world needed him the most, he vanished. A hundred years have passed and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the War.

Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me and my brother to look after our tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads, and that the cycle is broken. But I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow, the Avatar will return. To save the world.

To the story

Foot prints could be seen in the shining, new snow of the South. Two siblings, Katara and Sokka, are out fishing in a small canoe. "It's not getting away from me this time." The oldest, Sokka, prepared to spear a fish,

"Watch and learn Katara," he says," this is how you catch a fish" The girl, now known as Katara, looked over at him unimpressed

. Then she peers over the side of the boat, spotting a fish. She gets an uncertain look in her eye and seems nervous, as she takes off her glove, and starts to wave her hand back and forth.

, a bubble of water, with the fish in it, rose above the ocean. "Sokka look!" she shouted excitedly

"Shhhh, Katara you're going to scare it away. Mmmm, I can already smell it cooking," Sokka mumbled almost in a trance.

"But Sokka I caught one!" She lifted the water bubble into the boat, right as Sokka lifted his spear and popped it, sending the fish flying back into the water.

"Oh!" Sokka said in shock from the cold water. Then he turned around to face Katara, "Why is it, every time you play with magic water, I get soaked," he complained.

"It's not magic it's waterbending, and it's-" she was cut off.

"Yeah, yeah, an ancient art unique to our culture, blah, blah, blah," Sokka started while Katara crossed her arms. "I'm just saying," he continued while wringing out his hair, "that if I had weird powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself."

"Your calling me weird?" Katara defended, "I'm not the one who makes muscles at myself every time I see my reflection in the water," she finished with a smirk.

Sokka looked back unimpressed, until a jerk of the canoe forced him to look forward

They were headed straight into some rapids. Sokka instantly grabbed a paddle to steer them out of there. Ice was crashing together all around them.

Suddenly, an iceberg appeared straight ahead. "Look out!" Katara yelled at Sokka. "Go left!Go left!" Sokka didn't listen and went right instead.

The canoe got stuck in between two icebergs and was smashed throwing Sokka and Katara out of it and onto the ice.

Katara looked over at Sokka clearly annoyed, "You call that left?" Sokka replied with a cocky, "You don't like my steering? Well, maybe you should of waterbended us out of the ice."

"So it's my fault," Katara said while standing up. "I knew I should of left you home," Sokka said while putting his face in his arms. "Leave it to a girl to screw things up."

This was the last straw for Katara. " YOU ARE THE MOST SEXIST, INMATURE, NUT BRAINED," she started by throwing her hands back with every word . "I'M EMBARASSED TO BE RELATED TO YOU! EVER SINCE MOM DIED, I'VE BEEN DOING ALL THE WORK AROUND CAMP WHILE YOU'VE BEEN OFF PLAYING SOLDIER!"

"Uh, Katara," Sokka started with a scared look on his face, for Katara was cracking a huge iceberg behind them with each wave of her arms.

Katara continued not even close to being done with her rant, "I EVEN WASH ALL THE CLOTHES! HAVE YOU EVER SMELT YOUR DIRTY SOCKS? WELL LET ME TELL YOU, NOT PLEASANT!"

"Settle down," Sokka said even more frightened than before.

"NO," She said still oblivious, "THAT'S IT, I'M DONE HELPING YOU! FROM NOW ON YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN!" She yelled with a final wave of her arms. The ice behind her finally cracked as she turned around and gasped. The water pushed back the ice they were standing on.

After it settled down Sokka looked at her, "Okay you've gone from weird to freakish Katara."

"You mean I did that?" she asked surprised.

Just then, the water underneath them began to glow a beautiful blue. As they watched the light rise towards them, Sokka and Katara cried out.

Then, an iceberg broke the surface of the water. However this wasn't an ordinary iceberg because it seemed as if it was glowing. The siblings looked upon it in awe.

While taking a closer look, Katara saw there was a boy in the iceberg, and a girl

She gasped as she saw the boys eyes open. "Their still alive! we have to help them, " she said as she grabbed Sokka's club and running towards the strange boy.

"Katara," Sokka yelled," Get back here, we don't know what that thing is!" Upon reaching the ice, Katara had to give but five small hits for the ball to break open.

Air blasted out while a gigantic blue light beam shot up from the iceberg. Sokka and Katara stared up at the beam in fear. However they weren't the only ones who saw the light.

Somewhere on the ocean

"Finally," a boy in fire nation uniform with a nasty scar on his face breathed out. He was standing at the front of his ship.

He turned around to an older man who was playing with some tiles. "Uncle, do you realize what this means?"

"I won't get to finish my game?" The old man replied

"No uncle, it means my search it's about to come to an end," he replied, The old man sighed. Having heard this a million times before.

"That light came form an incredibly powerful source, it has to be him"

"Or it's just the celestial lights. We've been down this road before prince Zuko. I don't want you to get too excited over nothing. Please sit. Why don't you enjoy a cup of calming Jasmine tea," Iroh told the stressed teen

"I don't need any calming tea!" Zuko shouted " I need to capture the Avatar! You know this! Helmsman head a course for the light."

Back at the iceberg

Snow blew everywhere and when it cleared the boy in the iceberg had tattoos all over his body " stop!" Sokka's held up his spear but the boy, He groaned and fell over Katara ran over to him before he hit the ground.

Sokka came over and started to poke him with the end of the spear " stop it!" Katara pushed his spear away and placed the bot shadow the ice wall, The boy opened his eyes and told Katara

"I need to ask you something." He stumbled "What?"

"Please, come closer." He said like he was dying. "What is it?" Katara asked leaning in. "Will you go penguin sliding with me?" he asked with sudden energy. "Uh, sure I guess." Katara replied in an unsure manner.

The boy gliding himself off the ground.

Sokka screamed and grabbed the spear trying to be defensive the boy looks around and asks "What's going on here?" "You tell us? How did you get in that ice and why aren't you frozen?" Sokka asked. "I don't know?" The boy said pushing Sokka's spear away, they heard a growling and the boy suddenly ran over to the other side of the iceberg.

"Where's the another one!" Katara gasped, the boy looked at her confused then in the iceberg and gasped happily

He jumped in then ran to Appa's face to wake him up. "Appa! Are you all alright? Wake up, buddy." The boy said opening his eye to only have him close it again

The other two walked around and saw and sokka gasped terrified and shocked while holding his spear

The boy tried to open his mouth, that didn't work too well either. "Haha, you're okay!" Appa groaned to the boy.

He then saw someone under his tail asleep and gasped happily " Mayu!" He ran over and shook her, the other two looked over and gasped, sokka looked at her with a blush " wake up, wake up" the bald boy shook the unconscious girl

The girl began to stir, when her eyes opened she noticed the little boy and smiled

" morning aang" she said in a gentle voice, he laughed " it's not morning! At least I don't think it is?" The boy said scratching his head in wonder

"What is that thing?" Sokka asked . "This is Appa, my flying bison." Aang replied

"Right... and this is Katara, my flying sister," Sokka remarked with a tired face. Just then Aang ducked to Appa sneezing, except for Sokka who got it all over himself. "Don't worry it will wash out." Aang said as Sokka tried frantically to get it off. "So do you guys live around here?-"

"Don't answer that! Did you see that crazy bolt of light? They're were probably trying to signal the Fire Navy!" Sokka said interrupted " I mean her hair is red!" He exclaimed pointing at the girl

The two look confused at the other two

"Oh yeah Sokka I'm sure their spys you can just tell by the evil look in their eyes." Katara says sarcastically.

The bot just smiled and the girl looked confused still

"The paranoid one is my brother Sokka, what's your names?" Katara asked. Before the boy could answer he sneezed and went 10ft in the air. "I'm Aang."

"And I'm Mayura, but you can call me mayu" the girl smiled, the two just look at them in shock

"You just flew like 10ft! And your acting as of its normal?!" Sokka squeaked. "Really? It seemed higher than that." mayu said looking up to where Aang flew up

"You're an air bender!" Katara "Sure am." Aang said " we both are" mayu smiles

"Giant light beams, flying bison, air benders...I think I got midnight sun madness. I'm going home to where stuff makes sense." Sokka said, he was about to when he realised they were standing in the middle of water, on the berg

"Well, if you guys are stuck, Appa, mayu and I can give you a lift." Aang says He then air bends himself onto Appa along with mayu. "We'd love a ride. Thanks." Katara said

"Oh no! I'm not getting on that fluffy snot monster." Sokka yelled "Are you hoping some other kind of monster will come along and give you a ride home?" Katara asked

"You know, before you freeze to death." Mayu said Sokka opens his mouth in defiance and point at Katara then at nana, more than ready to retaliate, but he can't, but then says

" wait! what about you? Your barely have sleeves!" The teen boy exclaimed " I'm only a little chilly..." she shrugged, then as soon as a wing blew over, she shivered " okay...I take it back..."She exclaimed rubbing her arms, he sighed and threw his coat over her, much to her confusion " there, you can have that till we get home" he said turning his back

Katara and climb on to Appa's saddle. Then nana, Sokka bows his head and climbs onto Appa. "Okay, first time flyers, hold on tight. Appa, yip-yip." Aang said Aang whips the reins and Appa growls in response.

Appa moves his tail up and down and takes a huge jump into the air. He soars through the air for mere few seconds, making it appear as through he would fly, before belly-flopping into the water with a splash. Katara move to the front of the saddle up by Aang.

"Come on, Appa. Yip-yip." Aang said "Wow, that was truly amazing." Sokka said sarcastically Katara glared at Sokka.

"Appa's just a little tired. A little rest and he'll be soaring through the sky. You'll see." Aang said

Katara and Aang smile at each other, she moves back a little bit to see that he is still smiling at her. "Why are you smiling at me like that?" Katara asked

"Oh, I was smiling?" Aang asked Mayu just smile at the two of them. Sokka groans and throws his head back. Katara glare at him.

Meanwhile

It was close to night on the fore nation ship

"I'm going to bed now," his uncle yawned, "Yep, a man needs his rest. Prince Zuko you need some sleep. Even if you are right and the Avatar is alive, you won't find him. Your father, grandfather and great-grandfather all tried and failed," the general tried to convince him. "Because their honor didn't hinge on the Avatar's capture. Mine does. This coward's one hundred years in hiding are over," Zuko said.

Back with the others

Aang lies back on Appa's head while mayu sits behind him, Katara sat at the front of the saddle. "Hey." Katara said "Hey. What'cha thinkin' about?" Aang asked

"I guess I was wondering, your being an air bender and all, if you had any idea what happened to the Avatar?" Katara asked

". I didn't know him. I mean, I knew people that knew him, but I didn't. Sorry." Aang said " me either..." mayu says shaking her head

"Okay, just curious. Good night." Katara said "Sleep tight." Aang said mayu turns around uncomfortably, looking at aang's back, who had an upset look

Katara moves to the back of the saddle. The two air benders fall asleep

In the dream

The two were flying on Appa in a heavy storm.

" mayu!" Aang screamed as he couldn't control where Appa was going anymore " Aang Heath on!" She yelled, They dove right in the ocean and were almost about to drown when a light flicked on aang.

The Avatar State

Aang water bended them in the iceberg

Back in reality

Just then mayu wake up to Katara nudging her.

"Mayu, mayu. Get up." She gasped from the dream before realized that was the past

" w...what?"

"It's okay, we're in the village now. Come on, get ready everyone's waiting to meet you!" Katara said walking out. She looks over and sees a folded coat and puts it on, grabbed her staff

Aang came out of another little hut, Katara grabbed his hand, he gaped unexpecting it. "Mayu, Aang this is the entire village. Entire village, mayu, Aang." Katara said to a village made up of women and small children with caution in their eyes.

"Ah, why are they all looking at us like that? Did Appa sneeze on me?" Aang asked looking at himself.

"Well, we thought the Avatar cycle was broken until my granddaughter and grandson found you. Let alone the air benders are extinct." The old woman said walking up at the two from head to toe. "Extinct?!" Aang and mayu asked. "Aang, mayu, this is my grandmother."

"Call me gran gran." She added, flatly. "What is this a weapon? You can't stab anything with this." Sokka sounded aggravated, grabbing and looking at Aang's staff.

"It's not for stabbing. It's for air bending!" Aang scoffed as he turned it to a glider.

"Magic trick. Do it again." a little girl said

"Not magic, air bending." Aang said Aang movers his glider around himself, visually demonstrating what he was talking about.

"It lets me and mayu control the air currents around our gliders and fly." Aang said "Ya know, last time I checked, human can't fly." Sokka said

"Check again." Aang smirked Aang grabs hold of his glider and pushes himself off the ground, leaving Katara, Sokka, and mayu cover their face against the sudden wind.

The rest of the village looks at Aang in awe as Aang does loops and turns. "He's flying." a different village girl said

Aang makes more loops and speeds up to soar past the gazing villagers. "It's amazing." a different village girl said

"It's amazing." a different village girl said Aang's shadow passes over Katara

Aang, intending to further impress the villagers, files sideways and closes his eyes while grinning broadly.

He then flies head first into one of the village watchtowers. His head gets stuck in the watchtower. Katara tries not to laugh as Aang struggles to extricate his head from the watchtower.

He gets his head out and he tumbles downward onto a pile of snow at the base of the tower that crumbles. Katara rushes to his side, while Sokka looks on in shock at the damaged inflicted on the watchtower. "My watchtower." Sokka yelled

Aang lies covered in snow at the base of the tower. Katara and the village girls run over to Aang smiling. "That was amazing." Katara said

Sokka runs over to the watchtower and starts to pat the watchtower in hopes to save it from collapsing all the way.

Aang spins his staff and the wings retract. A large pack of snow falls from the watchtower and lands on Sokka. Mayu use my bending to get the snow off of Sokka.

"Great. You're an air benders, Katara is water bender. Together you can just waste time all day long." Sokka said

"Your are water bender?" Aang asked

"Well, sort of. Not yet." Katara said

"All right, no more playing. Come on, Katara, you have chores." gran-gran said

Gran-Gran leads Katara away from Aang And mayu

"I told you, their the real thing Gran-Gran. I found two benders to teach me." Katara said

"Katara, try not to put all your hopes in this boy and girl." gran-gran said "But their special. I can tell, I sense their filled with much wisdom." Katara said

They turn around to look at Aang. Who has his tongue stuck to his staff. "See? Now my tongue is stuck to my staff." Aang said as mayu laughs

One of the village boy pulls on the staff And they join mayu in laughter

Katara and Sokka's grandmother did look at Mayura's hair colour thinking " hmmm...red hair..could she be..." she mumbled " Gran-Gran?" Katara looked at her confused " I'll tell you later" she grumbled

On the fire nation ship

general Iroh watched as Zuko trained.

It was Sunset as Zuko was on deck sparring with the crew members.

"Again," Iroh says to Zuko as Zuko blasts fire from his hands at the guards, but misses. Then the guards attack Zuko with blasts of fire from their fists, but Zuko dodges.

He back flips over the guards to land behind them. He lets out a battle cry as Iroh signs and gets up. "No! Power in firebending comes from the breath. Not the muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body. The energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire" Iroh explains as he demonstrates, releasing a controlling plume of flame that bursts in front of Zuko, but does not hit him

"Get it right this time,"

"Enough. I've been drilling this sequence all day. Teach me the next set. I'm more than ready" Zuko said

"No, you're inpatient. You have yet to master your basics." Iroh brushed his command off, sitting down, "Do it again!"

Zuko had let out a distracted loud yell as He blasts one of the guards backwards with a gout of fire

"The sages tell us that the Avatar is the last airbender. He must be over a hundred years old by now. He's had a century to master the four elements. I'll need more than basic firebending to defeat him. You WILL teach me the advanced set!" Iroh sighed and looked over at her as she was looking over at him

"Very well. But first I must finish my roast duck. Num num... num," he says as he began eating

Back at the village

Mayura walked around, trying to kill some time when she noticed Sokka starting his warrior training.

"Now men, it's important that you show no fear when you face a fire bender. In the Water Tribe, we fight to the last man standing for without courage, how can we call ourselves men?" Sokka asked

Sokka was talking to six little boys who look like they would rather be doing anything else.

One of the boys waves his hand.

"I gotta pee." he says "Listen! Until your fathers return from the War, they're counting on you to be the men of this tribe, and that means no potty breaks." Sokka said "But I really gotta go." the boy says

Sokka sighs "Okay, who else has to go?" He asked and practically Every child raises their hand.

Sokka face palms in frustration. The boys leave, and Katara comes running over.

"Have you seen Aang? Gran-Gran said he disappeared over an hour ago." Katara said

Aang then walks out from an outhouse igloo, pulling his pants up a bit higher. "Wow! Everything freezes in there." Aang said Aang points towards the bathroom.

The boys start laughing

"Uh! Katara, get him out of here. This lesson is for warriors only!" Sokka yelled Sokka starts to walk away when he hears the sound of children laughing.

He turns around, the children are playing on Appa. Some are being propelled into the air, then they land in a pile of snow. "Stop! Stop it right now!" the laughter of the children is stifled immediately and Appa turns his head to look at Sokka, who accusingly directs his anger at Aang.

"What's wrong with you?! We don't have time for fun and games with the War going on." Sokka yelled

Sokka takes his spear and casts an annoyed glance at he laughing children who run past him. Aang slide down from Appa's head

"What war? What are you talking about?" Aang asked "You're kidding, right?" Sokka asked Aang looks at us questioningly, but the expression on his face changes to enthusiasm when see a otter-penguin.

"Penguin." Aang yells The animal is startled by Aang's outburst and quickly waddles off. Aang runs after it past Katara and as mayu walks over

" what's going on?" She asked

"He's kidding, right?" Sokka asked Katara and Sokka look at each other as mayu went after him " Aang leave the penguin alone!" She chases after him

Some time later

Katara calls out the twos names " mayu! Aang!"

She then finds them and sees mayu watch Aang with amusement, waiting for him to catch a otter penguin.

The Airbender was trying, but the creatures have proven to be too fast and slippery for him.

Aang laughed as he tried to catch one, "Come on, little guy. Wanna go sledding?" The penguin escaped the boy's grasp. "I think someone might be able to help us." Mayura said, her back turned to Katara, but she heard her footsteps in the snow.

"I have a way with animals." Aang laughed as he got up before making penguin sounds and movements, making Mayura smile a little and Katara giggle.

"Listen, I'll help you catch a penguin if one of you teach me Waterbending." Aang let go of a penguin's tail, "You've got a deal. Just one little problem, we're Airbenders not Waterbenders, isn't there someone in your tribe who can teach you?"

"No. You're looking at the only Waterbender in the whole South Pole." Katara said Sadly

"This isn't right, a water bender needs to master water" aang said

Mayu thought for a few seconds, her arms crossed over her arms, "What about the North Pole? There's another Water Tribe up there, right? Maybe they have Waterbenders who can teach you." At that, Aang's eyes got wide,. "Maybe, but we haven't had contact with our Sister Tribe in a long time. It's not exactly 'Turn right at the second glitchier,' It's on the other side of the world."

"But you forget we have a flying bison. Appa, Aang, and I can personally fly you to the North Pole." She said, gesturing to herself and her companions, "Katara, we're gonna find you a master."

"That's... I mean, I don't know. I've never left home before." Katara responded, uncertain. "Well, you think about it." Aang told her to consider it, "But in the meantime, cancyou teach us to catch on of these penguins?"

Katara smiled, before bowing for a short moment, "Okay! Listen closely my young pupils, catching penguins is an ancient and secret art." She pulled a fish out of her sleeve, "Observe."

She threw it to Aang, who begins to laugh as he is mobbed by otter penguins, wanting the fish.

mayu laughs along with him

Time skip

Aang and Katara laughed while sledding down a high, snow covered, hill.

Mayu flying beside them on her glider, Aang sled up a bugle of ice, sending him into the air and in front of Katara.

Smiling a little, Mayu quickly used her staff to give Katara a boost, getting her up beside Aang. "Hey!" Aang complained in a playful tone. "Hey back! You cheated first!" Mayu yelled, gliding down in front of them, she used the tip of her staff to make the snow fly up from its touch.

They laughed at the feeling of snowflakes hitting them. "I haven't done this since I was a kid!" Katara cheered. "You still are a kid!" Aang shouted over to her, smiling. "Incoming Tunnel upheld!" Entering an ice tunnel, Mayu went in first, then Katara, and at last, Aang.

"Aang, you're falling behind." Mayu shouted, a frown on her face.

She stopped letting Katara and Aang pass her before she stood on the ground, sending a blast off with her staff, Aang sped off and out of the tunnel.

Emerging on the other side, they find themselves on a wide, icy plain. The two gets off of their penguins and they walk away while Mayu landed, closing her glider as she stared at what aang was

"Wow." Aang breathed as they walked towards an old abandoned shipwreck, which is elevated by a rough outcropping of ice, "What is that?"

"A Fire Navy ship and a very bad memory for my people." Mayu walked towards the ship and Aang followed behind her

"Guys, stop. We're not allowed to go near it. The ship could be boobytrapped." Mayu stopped in her tracks, but didn't turn around, "You wanna be a bender, let go of fear. It won't get you anywhere." She said before continue to walk inside.

As they explore the ship, all three of them, Aang went into the weapon room as Katara began to speak, "This ship have hunted my tribe since Gran-Gran was a little girl. It was part of the Fire Nation's first attacks."

"Okay, hold on " he told her, picking up one of the weapons. "We have friends all over the world, even in the Fire Nation," Aang said, picking up a spear from the ground.

"We've never seen any war." Mayu finished, placing the weapon she picked up back where it belonged. "Guys, how long were you in that iceberg?" Aang looked down in thought

"I don't know, a few days maybe?" He looked at Mayura for confirmation, she nodded, "Yeah. Maybe." She agreed.

"I think it was more like a hundred years." Katara told them, but Aang and mayu objected, "What? That's impossible. Do we look like a hundred-twelve years old man to you?"

" that's impossible" the redhead shakes her head

"Think about it. The war is a century old, you two don't know about it.. Because, somehow, you were in there that whole time. It's the only explanation." Katara clarified.

Horrified, Aang collapses to the metal floor. Mayu slid down the wall, the idea of being gone for a hundred years sinking into her mind. "A hundred years."

"I can't believe it."

"I'm sorry. Maybe somehow there's a bright side to all this." Katara tried to comfort them, Aang, peeking up upon hearing this, took Mayu's hand, "At least we're still together, right?" He asked in a somewhat happier tone. "Right." Mayu put on a little smile, standing up still holding Aang's hand and pulled him up by it, "Come on, let's get outta here."

Instead of heading out, the Air Nomads decided to continue the investigation. "Guys, let's head back. This place is creepy." Katara said just as they began to investigate another room. "Huh?" The moment Aang looked back at Katara, he accidentally triggered a tripwire.

They all gasped when the boobytrap imprisoned them in the room by obstructing the doorway with metal bars. "What's that you said about boobytraps?" Mayu questioned

the girl while the gears began turning by themselves.

The ship fired a single flare into the sky above the ship.

"Oh oh." Aang said, seeing it. "Gotta find a way out." Mayu mumbled again and again, looking around.

Noticing a hole in the ceiling, Mayu picked Katara up, one arm under her knees and the other supporting her back while Katara's arms were around her neck, "Hold on tight." Katara tightened her grin before Mayu jumped out of the ship with Airbending through the opening and aang follows

Meanwhile

From the deck of his ship, Prince Zuko, having seen the flare, watched through a spyglass as two figures jump down the side of a ship, one carrying someone else. "The last Airbender, quite agile for his old age." He notes before turning around to yell at his soldiers, "Wake my uncle! Tell him, I found the Avatar." Looking through the spyglass again, he tracked the figures and scout ahead in the direction they were running toward, his eyes landed upon the tiny village in the distance.

He lowered his spyglass, squinting into the distance, "As well as his hiding place." Zuko added quietly.
