The Exploratory Mission

Jake listened to all the sounds around him, from cricking bugs to yowling in the distance. A gurgling sort of sound appeared on their side and Jake quickly turned, gun aimed up at the monkey like creatures. One stopped and stared down at him, while he looked back. The creature wasn't fuzzy, it had rubbery like skin, almost like their own, with four arms instead of two, and blue and yellow marking all over it's body.
"Prolemuris. They're not aggressive." Grace explained quickly as the creature moved away. "Relax, Marine." Grace shoved the barrel of the gun down towards the ground. "You're making me nervous."
"So, how will they know we're here?" Norm asked, the further they traveled into the trees.
"I'm sure they're watching us right now." Grace answered him simply. Norm stopped and looked around.
"Keep moving, Norm." Jake sighed.
"Keep up, guys!" Grace called back to them as she walked ahead. "And here I go." Grace said, inserting a needle into the root of one of the trees they made a stop at, to collect data.
Y/n's POV:
I had finally made my way though the great jungle, leaping up into a tree. The strange feeling felt comforting the closer I got. I jumped into the next tree, giving me a perfect view of the three Sky People Avatars. I kept a good distance to keep safely away just in case.
I held my bow steady at my side, seeing one of the strangers with a gun. I looked around at the three and quickly let out a short gasp. I realized it was Grace that I was looking at with two men. I smiled gently to myself, at my old friend that I had not seen in two years. The voices whispered to me once more, as if to tell me I was not here for Grace. Not this time. The pull lead me back to staring at the man with the gun. I had yet to see his face. I stood up and walked across the tree branches to try and get a better look.
"Scanning." Norm stated, holding out his device. "Oh, wow! It's that fast?" Norm gasped in amazement. The tree roots were on screen, showing a budding life force that was flowing through each and everyone.
"Amazing, isn't it?" Grace laughed. "So, that is signal transduction from this root to the root of the tree next to it. So, we should take a sample." She explained.
"Okay. Sample." Norm agreed and began looking though his pack.
Jake sighed, as he was bored, about three times as Grace had spoken. He started to walked away from the pair as they continued to talk about the life force of the tree. I watched the man carefully and followed after him, staying out of sight.
"You know, it's probably electrical." Norm pointed out. "Based on the speed of the reaction."
"Norm, you've contaminated the sample with your saliva." Grace sighed.
"Oh, right." Norm's cheeks flushed.
I had gotten down from my tree and moved into the next one, being just a hair closer to him. I watched the strange newcomer, leave Grace and the man she called Norm alone. I continued to stay hidden in the tree line, behind some thicker branches, watching him curiously. As he walked and turned around a cluster of the trees. He managed to unknowingly give me a full view of his face.
I suddenly couldn't help but find myself admiring him. Something about him seemed different to me than all the other Sky People I had seen. Including Grace. Not to mention the fact that, he was very cute in a strange sort of way. One that gave my tummy butterflies, in a way that Tsu'tey did not. I quickly shook my thoughts away and frowned.
"Who is he, mother? Why did you lead me here?" I breathed quietly to myself.
Jake admired large and strange flower like plants that grew enormously and in a large number together. He touched one gently and it shrunk, disappearing into the ground. He gasped and I chuckled quietly to myself seeing him recoil so easily. Jake stopped and turned his body, checking on Grace. Seeing her and Norm still fine and next to the trees, he moved forward again, reaching for a even bigger version of the plant. He touched it again and chuckled this time as it recoiled into the ground. I couldn't help but be amazed by this man and the fascination he had with the simple flora. Jake reached out and touched another one, making multiple in the field of flora close down and disappear.
I lifted my head slightly over the branches guarding me and I gasped. I was seeing a heard of Hammerhead Titanotheres not to far away from the flora since they'd been known to use them as cover. They were a large rhinoceros like creatures, and one was in the field with the man. The herd wasn't to far away. Specially as this one roared like a trumpet at him as it's cover disappeared.
Jake's relaxed body, suddenly turned stiff seeing the unknown creature, while Grace and Norm came running towards him for aid. Jake aimed the gun at the creature and I gasped quietly. No matter who he was, I wasn't about to let him hurt the creature. It was his fault for disrupting the plants, making the creature defend itself. I raised my bow ready to stop him if need be, not that his bullets could pierce the creatures hide. I lowered the bow as Grace approached, explaining the creature to him.
"Don't shoot. Don't shoot, you'll piss him off." Grace assured Jake through their com links. She and Norm hid behind a near by tree. The hammerhead trumpeted angrily and smashed it's hammerhead like trunk into the trees on either side of him.
"It's already pissed off." Jake retorted and held up the gun.
"Jake, that Armor's too thick. Trust me."
Reluctantly, Jake removed the gun from facing the creature, pointing it in the air instead. The creature still didn't back off and continued to thrash about it's head, taking out some more of the smaller trees. I ducked as one was lifted from it's roots and thrown my way. I held tight to the tree I was in so I wouldn't get knocked out of it.
"It's a territorial threat display." Grace explained. "Do not run, or he'll charge."
"So, what do I do, dance with it?" Jake asked sarcastically.
"Just... Hold your ground." Grace instructed him calmly.
The Hammerhead Titanotheres, scratched the ground with it's foot, growling and then began to charge at Jake with a large roar. I couldn't help but be nervous about what this strange man would do. I didn't want him to die, nor to expose myself either. But lucky for me, I saw his face scrunch up and instead of running away, he ran at the Hammerhead with a loud yell, waving his arms and making himself look bigger. The Hammerhead trumpeted in his face and slowly backed down, lowering it's feather's that surrounded it's head. Jake let out an amused laugh, glad that he didn't just die.
My heart tugged in my chest and I wanted nothing more than to hear the full laugh from this man. The strange feeling I quickly shook away and my focus recentered. I watched carefully, quickly realizing that something else was wrong. Sure, what he did was great, but that wasn't reason enough for the Hammerhead to back down like it was. I pulled myself higher into the tree seeing the black figure approaching behind Jake and I gasped.
"Yeah? Come on! What you got?" Jake taunted the Hammerhead as it continued to back away from him. Thinking it was his doing. "Oh, yeah. Who's bad? That's right. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, bitch."
"Moron." I slapped my face, running my hand downward, as he failed to hear the snarling behind him with his loud taunts.
"That's right." Jake said as the Hammerhead turned to run away. He could see the herd that had came to aid the creature behind it. "Get your punk ass back to Mommy. Yeah? Yeah, you got nothing. You keep running. Yeah, and why don't you bring back some of your friends, huh?"
A black panther like creature snarled louder than before, with it's jowls flipped upward and the scale's on it's head standing straight up. Jake slowly turned around and the ears on his head flattened in fear. The Thanator roared a massive lion like growl and leapt over Jake's head, making him aim the gun once more.
"Oh shit." Jake gulped.
The Hammerheads all stood their ground and trumpted even harsher roars then the one done towards Jake, at the predator. Grace quickly took a protective stance in front of Norm and began to back away, her eyes never leaving Jake's body.
"So what about this one?" Jake asked quickly, seeing the Thanator turn and snarl at him once again. "Run? Don't run? What?"
"Run!" I whispered in fear for the man.
"Run! Definitely run!" Grace yelled.
Jake turned his back, lowering the gun to the side and began to run away from Grace, Norm and the Thanator.
I began to leap from tree to tree, watching the chase take place. Wanting to help but also knowing I was required to keep my distance. I'd only intervene if absolutely necessary, I told myself.
Jake ran through a bundle of tree that slowed the Thanator down for only a moment, before it clawed it's way through them. Jake gasped and continued to run away. Leaping over fallen trees, squeezing through bamboo like trees, narrowly missing the never ending clamping jaws of the Thanator. He crawled through a low set of roots, nearly getting his foot chomped on. The Thanator did not give up it's chase, continuing after him in every which way he tried to go. Jake dove into a set of roots that were raised underneath a tree, creating a sort of barricade for himself.
My braid swung around my face as I stopped in a tree near by, praying hard that he would continue to run instead of stay. Knowing the claws of the Thanator easily out matched the roots. Which Jake quickly came to find out.
The Thanator leapt down onto the roots and stuck a claw inside the barricade, reaching around for him. It roared in annoyance at not being able to reach him as the man scooted as far back and away as he could. The creature jumped up and over towards the roots that Jake was directly under and began tearing with it with it's sharp claws, placing it's strong jaws around several of the roots and tearing them away from the tree. Giving him entrance.
I watched as bullet's suddenly started firing from the roots, making the Thanator roar and bounce around to avoid the attack, also hearing the scream coming from Jake as he shot at the creature. Jake gasped as the Thanator was smart. It quickly lunged into the hole, taking the gun from his hands and tossing it away. Jake waited for a moment unsure of what to do now. The Thanator quickly came back, lunging again into the hole and snapping it's jaws towards him. He quickly crawled out as the creature became wedged and began to run once again.
The Thanator quickly backed out of the hole and chased after him again, leaping from the top of some higher roots and tackling down Jake with it's claws. It hissed and circled him, making me prepare to jump down to get in front. Willing to take the attention on myself. Before I could even try, the Thanator jumped forward as Jake tried to crawl away. It's jaw clamped onto his backpack and thrashed him about. Jake's quick thinking led him to unbuckle the strap that was keeping him attached to the bag and he slid free. His body thrown away by the creature while thrashing about and began attacking the backpack.
Jake grunted and got to his feet and continued running. Realizing that the pack was empty, the Thanator stopped attacking and began chasing after the runaway Avatar again. Jake pushed his feet forward quickly and came closer to the edge of a cliff. With no choice, and slowing not being an option, he jumped and plunged down into the water below, narrowly missing the teeth of the Thanator that tried to snap at him. The creature almost fell in behind him, but quickly caught itself on the rocks and climbed back up, roaring at the water below, not seeing Jake rise again.
I leapt from the tree during the chase and began searching desperately for any sign that he was alive and okay. I knew there was a strong current at the bottom along with sharp rocks, so chances were slim of survival. And yet, I could some how feel it in my gut that he was alright. It was a strange feeling knowing I was connected to my people, and normally not the sky people. But this man was different somehow...
I chased the riverside by foot waiting to see where he would emerge. Suddenly, his blue head appeared above the surface of the water and I let out a dramatic sigh of relief, quickly hiding myself behind a tree. Jake grabbed onto a over hanging root that stretched out over the water and used it to climb his way out of the river. I trailed behind him on foot for a while and watched as he pulled out a knife from his pocket, creating a spear from a piece of wood.
Jake was stuck alone in the forest of Pandora, paranoid with no knowledge to guide him. He turned at every peep, every sound or stick breaking, searching for the source of the noise. I watched over him as a guide of sorts, making sure he was safe. Clearly seeing that he had no idea what he was doing. I moved from chasing him around on foot back into the trees. As I leapt into the next tree, arm's suddenly surrounded me and I nearly yelped out, causing Jake to spin quickly around. Neytiri grabbed me and covered my mouth. While giving me a stern look of disapproval.
"Why are you following a sky person?!" Neytiri hissed quietly as Jake started to walk away after not seeing anything. "I warned you about this! We have to kill him, it's the rules and it is the only way to keep our people safe."
"No, Neytiri wait!" I hissed protectively at her sister.
Ignoring my words, Neytiri lifted her bow and arrow aiming right at Jake's back. I let out a small shriek and was about to jump and tackle my sister. When I felt the presence of my mother. A seedling from the Tree of Souls came floating gently down into Neytiri's eyesight. She waited to release her bow as the spirit landed on the end of her readied arrow.
"See." I huffed quietly. "He is the sign from the All Mother I was looking for. His spirit is pure, I can feel it."
Neytiri lowered her bow at my words, knowing my connection didn't apply to Sky People and the spirit took off floating away. I prayed silently thanking mother for the intrusion to save this man that I knew almost nothing about. It was very rare for mother to intervene, but there was indeed something about him. Neytiri looked at me and sighed, before looking back to the man.
"Should we follow him?" Neytiri asked.
My face which was scrunched waiting for her to yell and force me home, relaxed and I looked up at her surprised at her words. She gave me a look waiting for a reply and I nodded happily at her. We followed him even as night fell, watching over him curiously. I knew I'd protect him if need be.
Trudy's helicopter flew around searching for any sign of Jake.
"I'm gonna have to call it, guys. We're not allowed to run night ops. Colonel's order." Trudy sighed. "I'm sorry, Doc. He's just gonna have to hang on until morning."
"He won't make it till morning." Grace replied with a sigh.
