Chapter 14: Journey to North Pole

*Asami's P.O.V.*

"This will truly be one for the history books, General Iroh." Zhao said as he, Iroh and I stood on the deck with Kai on my shoulders. Iroh and Zhao were wearing capes to keep them warm while I was wearing a pink winter dress with pink and grey flower patterns on along with knee high grey boots. Instead of my usual braid, I had my hair loose, so that Kai could cuddle in my neck and use my hair as a warm blanket.

"Just think, centuries from now, people will study the great Admiral Zhao, who destroyed the last of the Water Tribe civilization. You and Asami are lucky you're here to see it." Zhao continued as he looked at Northern Water Tribe with an evil smirk. I rolled my eyes at Zhao behind his back while Iroh looked down at his sleeve covered hands. "Be careful what you wish for, Admiral. History is not always kind to its subjects." Iroh warned without looking up.

"I suppose you speak from experience, but rest assured. This will be nothing like your legendary failure at Ba Sing Se." Zhao said to Iroh, making me death glare at the Admiral, while Kai growled silently in anger as Iroh looked down in shame. "I hope not, for your sake." Iroh said in sadness. "May I remind you Admiral Zhao," I started as I looked at Zhao's back with a slight glare. "General Iroh was able to breach the Outer Wall of Ba Sing Se, and far as I know he is the only one that was able to do it."

Zhao glared at me from the corner of his eye, but I didn't flinch. "Tell the captains to prepare for first strike." Zhao ordered, ignoring my remark. Iroh nodded to him before nodding to me to follow him inside the ship. "You must be careful what you say to Zhao." Iroh warned me as we walked through the halls. "He can make this journey unforgiving for you, and I won't be able to stop him in time." "Let him try." I said without looking at him.

We continued walking until we stopped behind a soldier. "We'll be landing soon. Do you have a plan?" Iroh asked the soldier. The soldier removes the mask of his helmet and looked over his shoulder, revealing us his face, who was Zuko. "I'm working on it, Uncle." Zuko said before his eyes flicker over to me when I grabbed his hand. "Be careful." I said and gently squeezed his hand. "I will be." He said, looking around him before quickly kissing me.

I returned the kissed before he pulled away and placed his mask back on under his helmet and left Iroh and I in the hallway. "You two just can't help yourselves can you?" Iroh asked with a smile, while Kai yipped a chuckle from my shoulder. I rolled my with a smile as I shook my head before Iroh and I left the hallow.

It was close to twilight, and the Fire Nation was still attack the Northern Water Tribe. As the Fire Nation attacked, it took everything in me not to go Protector and attack them and help Aang save the Northern Water Tribe. From inside the ship, I watched Aang taking out one war ship to another, and I can't tell you how proud I am of him, but Avatar or not, he is still just a kid and he can only take on so many ships.

Seeing that the sun was setting, Iroh stepped over to Zhao and advised him to stop the battle. "It's almost twilight, Admiral. As your military consultant, I must advise you to halt your attack. The waterbenders draw their power from the moon, and it is nearly full tonight. You should wait and resume the attack at daybreak."

"Oh, I'm well aware of the moon problem and I am working on a solution." Zhao said, making both Iroh and I frown, while Kai whimpered and hid further in my neck. "But for now, daybreak it is." He said and ordered the Captain to weigh anchor before he left for his room. "We better get to Prince Zuko before leaves for the Avatar." Iroh said as he started walking, getting a nod from me.

***

The sun has set and it was nightfall. Iroh and I left to find Zuko. The retired General opened a door and let me enter first before he entered and closed the door. Inside the room was Zuko, wearing white winter clothes and he was busy getting a canoe ready. "If you're fishing for an octopus my nephew, you need a tightly woven net, or he will squeeze through the tiniest hole and escape." Iroh said to his nephew as he and I walked closer.

"I don't need your wisdom right now, Uncle." Zuko said as he looked out the big window. "I'm sorry. I just nag you, because... well, ever since I lost my son..." Iroh started saying as his voice broke as he held back his tears. "Uncle, you don't have to say it." Zuko said with his voice full of sadness. "I think of you as my own." Iroh finished, making my heart beat in both warmly and in sadness when I heard his words to Zuko.

Zuko turned around to face his uncle with a soft expression. "I know, Uncle." He said before bowing down in respect. "We'll meet again." He said before getting caught by surprise when Iroh threw his arms around Zuko and hugged him. Zuko slightly returned the hug before pulling away. "After I have the Avatar." He finished before turning and walked over to me.

"Stay safe alright?" He said as he cupped my right cheek with his left hand and wrapped his right around my waist. "I'm coming with you." I said as I looked up to him. "Asami..." Zuko started but got interrupted by me. "Don't you even dare try to stop me." I snapped as I pulled away from him and pointed my finger at him. "I almost lost you. I'm going with you to make sure you come back alive."

Zuko sighed in irritation before nodding and walked over to his canoe. I smiled in victory before handing Kai over to Iroh and walked over to Zuko and got into the canoe before he started lowering us to the water. "Remember your breath of fire. It could save your life out there." Iroh said to Zuko. "I will." Zuko said and continued lowering us to the water. "And put your hoods up you two. Keep your ears warm!" Iroh quickly added, making me chuckle while Zuko rolled his eyes.

"We'll be fine!" Zuko called out to his uncle before sitting down when we finally touched the water and started rowing towards the Northern Water Tribe. "Hood up!" I joked as I put my hood up. Zuko groaned in annoyance before putting his hood up and continued rowing. "I still think you should have stayed on the ship with Uncle Iroh." He said from behind me as he rowed. "Well to bad, I'm here and I'm not flying back." I said and showed him my staff.

"How did you bring that without me even noticing it?" Zuko asked with a frown. "You were to busy checking me out to notice it." I answered with a smirk. "No I wasn't!" He exclaimed, and from the corner of my eye, I could see that he was blushing, making me smirk. "Yeah, you were!" I said with a smirk, chuckling softly when Zuko groaned behind me in frustration and continued rowing.

It took a while, but Zuko and I were soon in front of the wall of the Northern Water Tribe. The closer we got, the louder the turtle seals got. As we got closer, I saw movement on top of the wall and looked up. It was a Water Tribe guard walking. Knowing that he might see us, I placed my hand on Zuko's, silently telling him to stop rowing, which he did. We waited until the guard walked away and continued rowing further.

We continued rowing until Zuko rowed to a glacier and pulled me and the canoe onto it. I got out of the canoe and walked over to Zuko, who was spying on the guards on the wall. "No way we'll be able to get inside without catching those guards attention." I said as I looked up at the guards. Before Zuko could say anything, we both heard a splash behind us and we both turned around. Behind us was three turtle seals before one of them jumped into a hole in the glacier.

"Where are they going?" Zuko asked as he and I walked over the hole as the rest of the seals jumped in and swam away. I looked down the hole and inspected it. "Looks like a underwater tunnel." I said as I looked up to Zuko, who looked down at the hole. "They're coming up for air somewhere." Zuko said, making my eyes widen when I soon realized what he's suggesting. "You're not suggesting what I think you are suggesting?" I asked with a worried frown.

Instead of answering me, Zuko took a deep breath and dived right into the hole. "Of coarse you were." I muttered under my breath in irritation before taking a deep breath as well and dived right into the hole after Zuko and swam after him.

***

Zuko and I were still swimming in the underwater tunnel until we saw light at the end of the tunnel, telling us that it is our way out. Seeing the light, Zuko started kicking faster towards it, but I was so cold and tired of swimming, I wasn't able to speed up like him. Zuko soon got the hole and immediately climbed out. I soon got to the hole and took a deep breath of air the second my head got out of the water.

While I took in deep breaths, Zuko was laying next to the hole, taking in deep breaths and spitting out fire from his mouth while he shook from the cold. After spitting out some fire, Zuko sat up and looked back to the hole at me. "What are you still doing in the water? Get out!" Zuko exclaimed as he moved over to me and grabbed me by the arms and pulled me out. "You're freezing!" He said as he wrapped his arms tightly around me.

"I... can't feel... my legs." I shuttered as I shook from the cold in Zuko's arms. "Hold on." Zuko said as he tightened his arms around me. Suddenly, I felt his body warming up, making me sigh in delight as I snuggled into his body. "Come on, we need to keep moving." He said as he picked me up bridal style, without putting off his heat as he stood up before snapping at the barking turtle seals. "Be quite!"

The turtle seals immediately turned silent and stayed quiet as Zuko walked past them with me in his arms, but they soon started barking again. "Clearly they don't know who you are." I joked as slowly got feeling back in my legs, getting a huff from Zuko. "Clearly." He said as he stopped in front of a small waterfall. "Can you feel your legs now? Can you move them and stand?" He asked as he looked down at me. "I think so, let me try." I said and waited for him put me down.

Zuko slowly placed me on my feet and held onto me incase I fall. I held onto him for a moment before releasing him and moved slightly forward. "They still hurt, but I can move." I said as I looked up to him. He sighed slightly before nodding to himself and looked up to the waterfall. "Okay, we can do this. Hopefully the tunnel isn't so long." He said as he took my hand in his and lead us to the waterfall. "What tunnel?" I asked with a frown before figuring out the answer myself when I looked up at the waterfall.

"I'm not going to like this am I?" I asked Zuko with a not impressed expression. "No, you won't." He answered honestly before releasing my hand from his, taking a deep breath and started climbing up on the fall on ice and entered the hole where the water fell out from the waterfall. "If we don't make it after this, I'm going to kill him." I said before sighing and took deep breath before following after Zuko.

Zuko and I climbed up in the icy tunnel, clinging on for dear life as the water tried to push us down. Luckily, we found the end and climbed through, only to see that we were in a underwater cave now. Being an airbender, I can feel where there is air, and I knew there is an air bubble above us. Grabbing Zuko's hand, I started swimming towards the air bubble as I pulled Zuko along with me. The second our heads exited the water, we both took deep breaths as we rested for a moment.

"Are you okay?" Zuko asked me as he kept himself a floated above water while he catch his breath. "Yeah... you?" I answered and asked as I catch my breath as well. "Yeah." He answered as he took deep breaths. "Any ideas on how to get out of this cave?" I asked after finally breathing normally. "Not yet..." Zuko answered before looking down in thought. "Let me quickly check." He said before taking a deep breath and went underwater again.

Not long after he went down, he soon got up again. He took a few breaths before looking to me. "I found a tunnel." He said, making me groan. "Not another tunnel." I said before sighing when Zuko took a deep breath and went down underwater. I groaned and took a deep breath before going down and followed after him, swimming through the tunnel.

We continued swimming through the tunnel until we saw light. I mentally cheered when I saw the light as swam straight towards it with Zuko next to me. But when we tried to get out, we noticed that the hole was iced closed. Zuko started punching the ice, trying to break the ice to get us out, but the ice was to thick. He punched the ice again, only to exhale and lose all the air he has left. Not even thinking twice, I swam over to Zuko and placed my mouth over his and gave my air to him.

After I pulled away, I saw Zuko looking at me with worried eyes. But I just showed him an 'okay' sign with my hand before pointing back up to the ice. Zuko quickly nodded and swam back to the ice. Instead of punching, Zuko placed his hands on the ice and started heating it with his firebending, melting a hole big enough for us to climb through. The second he finished the hole, Zuko grabbed me and pushed me through the hole and out of the water before following soon after.

Both Zuko and I took deep breaths and laid down on the ground. "Let's never do that again." I said while I shook from the cold as Zuko wrapped his arms around me again and heated his body up for us both. "Agreed." Zuko said before blowing fire out of his mouth to warm his body up more. "Let's just lay down here for a few moment before we continue moving." Zuko said as he held on to me. "I agree to that." I said and snuggled deeper into his chest before closing my eyes as rest took over me.

***

I groaned as I slowly woke up and opened my eyes, but I soon frowned when I felt what felt like grass under me and looked down after raising my head up a bit, only to see actual grass. "What is grass doing in the North Pole?" I asked myself with a frown when I looked up from the grass when I heard fighting. When I looked toward the fighting sound, I saw Zuko and Katara fighting, while Aang was sitting in a meditating position with his eyes and tattoos glowing, telling me that he's in the Spirit World.

The second I remember that Zuko and Katara are fighting, I gasped and went to stand up and stop them, but I was having trouble moving my hands. I frowned and looked down to my body and saw that my arms and legs are tied together with rope. "Are. You. Kidding ME!?!?!" I exclaimed in anger as I struggled to release myself from the ropes. "Seriously Zuko!?!" I snapped, but he and Katara was to busy fighting to even notice me.

As I tried to free myself, I watched Zuko and Katara fight with their bending. I immediately noticed Katara's improvement and knew that she found a master. She must have had a great master and she must have been a great student, because when Zuko run over to Aang and tried to grab him, Katara shot a strong blast of water at him, sending into the wall. Before Zuko could get up, Katara send a big wave at him and froze him against the wall.

"Way the go Katara." I said as I looked at Zuko frozen against the wall impressed. But my eyes soon widen in worry and slight fear when I saw the sun rising. "Oh no..." I said as the sun's rays shined on Zuko. The second Zuko felt the sun's power, he melted the ice around him, releasing himself. Before I could called out and warn Katara, Zuko surprised attack her from behind and shot a fire blast at her. Katara heard the attack and tried to block it with water, but the blast send her against a pole and knocked her out.

"Katara!" I called out worriedly while Zuko walked over to Aang and picked him up by the collar. "You rise with the moon... I rise with the sun." Zuko said to a knocked out Katara before picking up Aang and threw him onto his back. He turned around and walked towards me but froze in mid step when he saw me glaring at him. "Monkey feathers..." He muttered under his breath.

"You... are so... DEAD!" I screamed at him, making him flinch. "I know." He said as he walked over to me and picked me up and held me in his arms bridal style. He then turned and exited the place and started walking through snow. "Where are we even going?" I asked as Zuko walked. Before Zuko could answer, it started snowing heavily around us, first sign of an incoming blizzard. "Just great." I groaned as Zuko continued moving.
