Azula Glacier is a dominant born as a in the to and as their second child. Azula is the great-granddaughter of Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin, the adorable younger sister of , stepdaughter of , older half-sister of , sister-in-law of and , as well as Katara's love interest, the adopted older sister of , sire of , and the maternal aunt of Princess . After Toph's adoption into her family and her marriage to Aang, Azula gained a niece, Aura, and a nephew, Tempest, both of whom are earthbenders and airbenders.

Six years prior to the start of Phoenix Rising, Azula was raised in the Fire Nation until she, Zuko, and Ozai fled to the South Pole after being banished and stripped of their birthrights by her father, Fire Lord Ursa. Like Zuko, Azula bears an almost exact resemblance to her mother, Ozai, and alongside her older brother, Sokka, , , and Aang, she also played a key role in defeating her father, Fire Lord Ursa and restored balance to the world.

After the Hundred Year War, Azula married Katara and together, they had two daughters named Amaya and Kida.

Azula was the second-born (86 ) of Fire Lord Ursa and Prince Ozai; born on the Summer Solstice at noon. From an early age, like Zuko, she was shunned and disdained by their father, the only familial support coming from her mother, brother, grandfather, and cousin, who loved her just the way she was.

Ursa interacted little with her family and was emotionally and verbally abusive towards her husband and children, lowering their confidence. As a result of this, Azula and Zuko became wary of Ursa and didn't speak to her unless she spoke to them first, favoring more time with Ozai.

Banishment and life at the Southern Water Tribe

When Zuko was ten and Azula was eight, Ursa killed her father and took the throne from her older brother banishing her, Zuko, and Ozai and told them that the only way for them to come home was for them to find the Avatar, but not before divorcing from Ozai and stripping the three of their royal titles.

Ozai being the current incarnation has been a well-kept secret between Ozai and his children and together, they fled to the South Pole for a fresh start. Upon arriving at the frigid land, Zuko and Azula took to the ice and snow like a turtle-seal to water; thriving and prospering in the icy temperatures.

Ozai, Zuko, and Azula met Hakoda and his family, eventually settling into the village as though they were always apart of it. Bato, Hakoda's best friend, took an interest in Ozai and after a while, the two eventually married after three years of dating, with Bato becoming her's and Zuko's stepfather and Ozai becoming pregnant with their new baby sister three years later. On Azula's 9th birthday, Bato gifted her with a special dagger that was a keepsake from his own mother.

Book 1

Three years later, Azula remained in the village to help Ozai, who was about four or five months pregnant at the time, with chores, while Zuko went out to help Sokka and Katara with fishing. However, she, Ozai, and the rest of the villagers, were shocked to see the trio return with an airbender named Aang, who explained that he was here to help the Avatar learn airbending.
