10 | the truth

"Turn me into a maggot!" Peter suggested frantically as they all emerged from the Shrieking Shack. "Turn me into a flobberworm!" he tried. "Anything but the dementors!" He turned to Ron who was having issues standing, "Ron! Haven't I been a good friend?" he inquired. "A good pet? You won't let them give me to the dementors, will you?" Ron cringed at the comment, "I was your rat!" He moved forward and reached for Abigail, "Sweet girl! Surely you won't let them-"

She scowled at the man and stepped away quickly before he could get his hands on her. "Stay away from her," Lupin suggested as he moved the wand closer to him. He looked over at the now visible moon and Abigail paled as she moved away from her father.

His body contorted unnaturally and Abigail cringed, "Dad, did you take your potion?"

"You know the man you truly are, Remus!" Sirius tried and Abigail's eyes widened. "This heart is where you truly live! This heart here!" He placed his hand on Lupin's chest over his heart, "This flesh is only flesh!"

"We need to go," Abigail informed the three as she stumbled backward. The back of her heel got caught on a tree branch but Harry steadied her before she could fall, "We need to go now.

Pettigrew got a hold of Lupin's wand and Abigail was quick to act. She raised her own wand immediately, "Expelliarmus!"

The wand flew from his hand and he turned to the girl. He waved at the girl with a grin before he started to morph into a rat. She moved to go after Pettigrew but someone got a hold of her arms before she could go. She struggled to get away from them but their grip only tightened. "You'll only get hurt," they informed her and she looked up to find Harry behind her. She frowned but ultimately stopped fighting him and he released her.

The four of them backed away from Siriur and Lupin, the latter unable to fight the turn. Abigail squeezed her eyes shut and Harry wrapped his arm over her shoulder. She rested her forehead against his shoulder, unable to bear seeing her father in pain. The werewolf threw Sirius to the side and turned to the children.

"Wait," Hermion spoke up and stepped forward and Abigail looked up quickly.

"Hermione, no!" Abigail exclaimed, shaking her head with wide eyes. "Trust me, it's useless." She reached forward and grabbed Hermione's hand, pulling the girl to the rest of them, "Without the potion, he's the monster everyone is afraid of."

They backed away as the werewolf howled. "There you are, Potter!" Snape shouted as he stepped in front of the four students. There was a growl from behind him and he turned to come face to face with the werewolf. He held his arms out so that they were outstretched in front of them and held them back, creating a barrier between them and the monster.

The werewolf struck the professor and they all fell to the floor. They managed to stand back up as Sirius emerged in Animagus form. The dog leapt at the werewolf and they went tumbling to the floor. Snape placed himself between the kids and the animals as they fought.

"Sirius!" Harry shouted after his godfather and he managed to slip past Snape. Abigail tried to grab him but failed and when she tried to follow after him, Snape prevented her from doing so.

"Come back here, Potter!" Snape shouted after the boy but it was clear to all of them that he wasn't going to turn around.

"We have to go after them," Abigail announced, "They could get hurt."

"No," Snape shook his head, "You need to get back to the castle." Abigail opened her mouth to argue but he narrowed his eyes at the girl. "Now," he ordered, "All three of you, go to Pomfrey."

Hermione helped Ron stand up and Abigail reluctantly went to his other side and helped him as they made their way to the infirmary. "Harry will be fine," Hermione pointed out as they helped Ron settle down on the bed.

"You know that, how, exactly?" Abigail countered and Hermione frowned.

"Professor Snape will find him," she replied and Abigail scoffed. "He'll be fine."

There was a gasp from behind them and suddenly Pomfrey was pushing her way through and was at the foot of the bed Ron was in and examining his leg, "What happened?"

"Long story," Abigail replied with a huff and a moment later, the door opened to reveal Hagrid carrying Harry into the room. Her eyes widened at the sight, "Is he okay?"

"Dumbledore said he should be fine," Hagrid explained with a sniffle. "Snape is talking to him now." Hagrid placed the boy on the bed and wiped his face, "He should wake up soon."

Hermione sat down at the chair next to Harry's bed and Abigail took a seat by Ron. "Harry?" Hermione spoke up as soon as she saw that the boy had woken up. Abigail looked up from where she had been resting her head at the foot of Ron's bed.

"I saw my dad," he stated immediately, looking around the room for a moment.

Hermione shook her head, "What?"

"He sent the dementors away," he explained as he forced himself to sit up, "I saw him across the lake."

"Harry, they've captured Sirius," Hermione informed him. "Any minute now the dementors are gonna perform the Kiss."

Harry faltered, "They're gonna kill him?"

"No," Abigail answered and Harry turned to look at her in confusion. "They're going to suck out his soul."

They all remained silent at this until the door opened to reveal Dumbledore. Hermione was the first to speak, "Headmaster, stop them. They've got the wrong man."

"It's true," Harry agreed, "Sirius is innocent."

"It's Scabber who did it," Ron announced.

"Scabbers?" the old man inquired.

"He's my rat, sir," he explained. "He's not really a rat," he added, "He was a rat." Ron shook his head, "He was my brother Percy's rat. But then they gave him an owl-"

"The point is," Abigail cut his rambling short. "We know the truth."

"Please believe us," Hermione pleaded.

"I do, Miss Granger. But the words of four 13-year-old wizards will convince few others. A child's voice, however honest and true is meaningless to those who have forgotten how to listen," Dumbledore stated, "Mysterious thing, time. Powerful...and when meddled with, dangerous. Sirius Black is in the topmost cell of the Dark Tower."

He looked at Hermione, "You know the laws, Miss Granger. You must not be seen. And you would do well, I feel, to return before this last chime. If not, the consequences are too ghastly to discuss. If you succeed tonight...more than one innocent life may be spared." He moved to leave but paused to add, "Three turns should do it, I think. Oh, and by the way. When in doubt, I find retracing my steps to be a wise place to begin." He nodded, "Good luck."

"What the bloody hell was that all about?" Ron asked, gaping at the other three.

"Sorry, Ron, but seeing as you can't walk..." she trailed off before looking at Abigail, "We should hurry."

Abigail shook her head, "My head is pounding. I'll just stay here."

Hermione nodded understandingly and she began to turn the time-turner that was around hers and Harry's neck. Harry opened his mouth to convince Abigail to come with them but before he could, they were gone.
