The Work Business

I never thought that working was such a hard thing to do and trying to take over a huge company from your parents was the worst thing I could image.

My brother Shinji was meant to take over the family business; or should I say the Emme-Reece family business as I was only adopted into the family and had no real claim over it but he had denied it from an early age stating that he wanted to make a living on his own, which he did in the end.

After school, college and university where I studied music, art and business (that one was namely for my father and not for me) I was asked to come into my father's study alone with my brother.

There he told us that he was looking for one or even both of us to take over the business at that moment (I remember it so well) Shinji jumped up and said "no father, I want to take my own path" and he just walked out there and then. Thank you my dear brother for doing that to me.

Me and my father just looked at each other and then looked at me with such a stern face which I knew he meant business and so he told me from now on he was going to train me to take over the family business.

I hated it so much; I just wanted to leave and take a trip around the world and never come back. I didn't want to learn anymore I have been there and done that and got the t-shirt; trust me I still have it, the t-shirt that is.

So there and then my training into being the heir to the family business had started whether I wanted to or not.

It started at 7:30am right after breakfast and it finished at 9:00pm at night. Yes people over twelve hours of this, I did have break and yes as a teenager I did have a habit of sneaking off and ditching where I could.

From 7:30am I was learning the role of being president of the company until 9:00am, then it was learning the names and roles of everyone within the company under my father that was until 12pm and then we broke for lunch for an hour.

I can remember only a few now as since I took over everything has changed. One was Misao Fujiwara he was the assistant manager to the finance department, another was Hitoshi Sakarai he was vice president and was much older than my father so he refused the position and let me take over.

Another was Retasu Raito, she let me and only me call her Rei, she was manager of the marketing and she was lovely to be with, she sadly retired three years after I took her over but we stayed great friends until her recent death. I will miss you Rei, my friend

Then it was profits of the company how they raised and fell depending on the profit marketing of the year that was until 2pm and then we broke for half an hour and that was when I had the habit of disappearing. Sorry father.

UGH! It was one of the worst things I had to learn as it bored the hell out of me, who wants to know how profits raised and fell and how to change the business with that. I think I fell asleep a few times and when I woke up I met an angry face which belonged to my father.

After that had happened quite a few times it was easier to disappear and go shopping of all things either that or I would lock myself in my room until I heard an angry knock at my door and when I opened it my father was there.

Next was money management for two and a half hours (ugh!) father said that I needed to know this most of all, this was the most important part that he really wanted me to know. I even had a test after all of it and at first I was a complete failure but over the next five years I improved greatly.

To this day I'm still don't understand it all, I'm so glad that I've hired people who understand this more than I do and I'm so grateful to them, to tell you the truth I have to ask them to down size it all so then I can understand it all.

I'm not that stupid that they have to put it in really small words for me to understand, they just have to use a simpler terminology so then I can understand it all. I do have the tendency to fall asleep if I don't understand it all J at least I'm honest right?

4:30pm to 6pm was dinner and music practice for 45 minutes which I made sure to do even though father didn't want me to but I made him an ultimatum, I practice my music and I won't give up on the business and with that it was decided that I would practice music and train to take over the business.

It was one of the only times that I was able to relax, dinner was only for 45 minutes, my father would be reading the paper by then, he would wait all day to read it and then it was at the dinner table and then I would go off and practice my music playing and that's where I would relax more than anything at least for 45 minutes.

For the last three hours consisted of test after test of what I had learnt that day and revision for the next day, I also had an overall test each Saturday for four hours only just to see if it was really sticking in my head.

Why give your child tests of all things, he knew I hated them and would moan all the time and then hit my head on the table when the test was put in front of me, I would always say "do I have to?" and he would just give me this look that said "yes" and so I took the tests.

I really, really hated it I, had hardly any time for myself, I wanted to practice my music, do my martial arts and to hang out with my friends but it never really happened, it was so rare that it did that I can hardly remember doing any of these.

The only day that I had to myself where I could really relax was Sunday and even with that I had to go to church as well, it was something that my parents insisted that me and my brother had to do, they said when we were over the age of 18 we could decide but until then we had to go.

I have to admit it was only for two hours and then we were allowed to do what we wanted. Right away I was in the music room or on the phone to my friends and I would disappear for hours and only came back just before 11pm at night as I had to be up for 7am so I could start it all over again.
