@laurendoubleu
Hello fellow Wattpadders! Today we have with us laurendoubleu, the author of the book, Triple Point.
I am Abhipreeti (_abhipreeti_) and I have interviewed Lauren, a.k.a, laurendoubleu.
Lauren has always enjoyed writing, but it wasn't until later in life that she decided to focus on documenting the characters and worlds of her daydreams. With her background in engineering, these stories tend to include hints of science, and she always loves to have representation for her fellow members in the LGBTQ+ community. Aside from writing, she also enjoys petting cats, photography, and trying out new foods.
At what age did you realize that you have a special place for writing? Are you currently or do you ever dream of one day being in the writing industry?
>>I believe I was about seven years old when I first realized I wanted to write! After reading tales about friendship and fantasy, I decided I wanted to create stories of my own. It was a few years before I actually wrote something I remember though. At the time though, and for a while after that, I had dreamed of becoming a full-time writer one day. Now, I mainly write for fun!
Did any story, on or off Wattpad, inspire you ever and help you carve your interest towards writing books?
>>Absolutely! While the story about wizard boy and his magical school has been at the center of controversy in recent years, those books were a huge motivator for me to write stories of my own and bring my imagination to life.
What is the genre(s) in which you mostly write your books? Do you think you are able to create brilliant plots when you write in that specific genre(s)?
>>I love the infinite number of possibilities that can go into creating speculative fiction stories. Within that realm, I find myself leaning towards sci-fi; even when I wrote fantasy, I couldn't help but have the main character mentally process the magic of the ocean with her knowledge of physics! While I wouldn't say my plots are necessarily "brilliant," I do feel like I have more freedom to make the impossible possible, and that helps my imagination run wild, concocting stories that wouldn't happen in our current world. There are some constraints by forcing my worldbuilding to still have a scientific explanation to keep it believable, but I think those limits also spark additional creativity. If one idea doesn't end up being feasible, I just need to think of an alternative!
What advice would you like to give to authors who are writing in the same genre(s) as yours?
>>Keep an eye on the news, especially in the science section. With new discoveries and innovations occurring every day in our constantly changing world, you never know what inspiration you might find there!
Do you have any favourite quote or quotes from your book?
>>It was tough to choose a favorite quote, but here is a small excerpt from around the middle of Triple Point that I love!
"I'm scared," Camilla whispered, her voice so soft that she wondered if Elsie heard her even with her ear less than an inch away.
"I know," Elsie replied, and she squeezed Camilla even tighter, maybe to be comforting or maybe for her own benefit. "I am too."
They were both in a situation that neither of them wanted to be in, and there was nothing they could do about it.
Maybe one day, they wouldn't have anything to worry about anymore. Maybe one day, there wouldn't be any more wars to fight or lives that needed saving, and they could live without the constant threat of fear and anxiety looming over them. Maybe one day, that would be possible, but that was not today. Today, all they could do was hope for the best, and maybe one day, that peaceful future would eventually be theirs.
Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
>>Hopefully, I'll still be having fun writing! On top of that, I'd like to be more confident in my abilities and my ideas, no matter what others might say.
Now let us talk about your book. How would you describe your story in five words? Could you please give us a brief summary of what your book is about? What makes your book different from other books in the same genre(s)?
>>Triple Point in five words: "sapphics ally against superpowered terrorists"!
In other words, when actress Elsie Bates is targeted by superpowered terrorists, the federal government assigns her a superpowered bodyguard: Camilla Wyatt, one of the country's strongest guardians, and the woman who broke Elsie's heart two years prior. While they have a rocky start, the two women learn to open up to each other and steadily grow closer. And as the superpowered attacks continue, the women and their friends begin to uncover the truth behind them.
While the idea of "forcefully militarized superhumans" isn't new, I like to think that the basis of their powers is unique! If anyone recognizes the phrase "triple point," they'll probably remember their chemistry classes—and for good reason. The most common abilities in the story use chemistry and physics, and the superpowered meta-humans usually have control over one or two of the three common states of matter: gasses, liquids, and solids. Rarer abilities focus on biology! Compared to other sci-fi stories, I think this application of science makes Triple Point relatively unique.
Which character or characters of your story do you relate to most? And why?
>>I definitely relate to Camilla the most! Issues in my own life actually inspired several challenges that both she and Elsie face, but Camilla received the brunt of them. While her personality is somewhat different from my own, her experiences with narcissists, manipulative superiors, and keeping secrets for her own survival are things I relate to. The need to give her a happy ending was fantastic motivation to see this story through to completion!
How did you come up with such a fascinating plot? Were there any inspirations?
>>I'm a huge fan of superheroes, so having them be part of some sketchy government conspiracy was one of the first ideas that came to mind. For their abilities, I loved the idea of applying the knowledge from my high school science classes! Lastly, I wanted the romance subplot to be between a celebrity and someone who dealt with action on a daily basis. With that, the actress-bodyguard dynamic was born!
How did you discover Wattpad? And what engendered you to begin writing on this platform? What do you like best about this application?
>>I had heard about Wattpad around 2012 when I was looking for online platforms to read on, but I never imagined I would write a story worth sharing here myself. When I eventually did finish my first original story in 2021, I had been away from Wattpad for a while, but after hearing about the spirited community of readers and writers, I decided to share my own story here! Just like I heard, Wattpad members are amazingly supportive, and they're one of the main reasons I love this platform!
When did you start writing on Wattpad? How has your writing journey been ever since then?
>>Triple Point was the first story I shared on Wattpad, back in 2021. Since then, I've written another two novels, two novellas, and a handful of short stories that I'm exceptionally proud of.
When I first wrote Triple Point, it was a way to use my imagination to help process my emotions, and I wasn't sure I would continue writing after its completion. While my childhood self had hoped I would become more involved in writing as an adult, as I grew older, I never thought I would manage to achieve that.
The friends I've made on this platform are to thank for a lot of the encouragement I've received, and they've helped me navigate my self-doubt. Not only have I managed to meet a lot of great people, but I've also received so many amazing comments and read a wide variety of excellent stories. At the beginning, I never expected how much these things would impact my writing, but I'm glad they have. I've learned so much from this community, and I hope to learn even more!
What is your writing process and how do you cope when writers' block hits you?
>>My writing process probably isn't for everyone: wait until inspiration hits me, plan as much of the story out as I can, then start writing! I've noticed my process tends to vary based on my mood and the type of story it is, among other things, so I try to let myself go with the flow.
When I feel stuck, one thing I try is stepping away from my computer, phone, and any writing device. That blinking cursor and blank page can be stressful, so it helps to let my mind work without the unnecessary pressure. Sometimes, my brain will latch onto an idea and continue to grow on it, and once it becomes too much to remember, I'll write it down as quickly as I can.
Are you a pantser or a plotter? During which time of the day do you usually write?
>>I'm somewhere in the middle in plantser territory. While I do like to have some sort of plan, I also want the freedom to stray from it, maybe if a character suddenly decides to acquire a mind of their own or something! As for my preferred time of day, I enjoy writing in the middle of the night when everything's quiet. It's so peaceful, and it gives me space to think!
What would be your advice to young and budding authors, who are just beginning their journey on Wattpad and are quite new to the writing world?
>>I'd say that there isn't one right way to write. A lot of writing strategies, planning methods, and even Wattpad tricks don't work for everyone, and that's okay! It's important to find what works best for you, no matter how much other people try to convince you otherwise.
Is there any author(s) on Wattpad whom you look up to as an amazing writer?
>>Every story I've read on Wattpad has taught me something valuable about writing, but I would like to specifically mention two of the first writers I met here. Aptionia has the magic touch when it comes to creating beautiful descriptions, and that, along with her intricate worldbuilding, diverse characters, and captivating plots, makes her stories inspirational! AziaElga also has an amazing collection of stories spanning various genres, and the relatability of her characters, plus her knack for building immersive worlds with fun plots, makes each of her works a joy to read!
Could we please have two or more Wattpad story recommendations? What do you like most about these stories?
>>I have several I'd be honored to recommend!
Dark Divide by Aptionia is an enemies-to-lovers high fantasy novella. I love the dynamic between the grumpy Evylyn and the sunshine Vareia, their impressive demigoddess powers, and the magical world of Astania!
Prototype Dorian by AziaElga is a rivals-to-lovers futuristic sci-fi novel. While it's still in the early chapters, the rivalry between Lara and Morgan is so entertaining, and the details of the dystopian setting has me needing to learn more.
Anna by JustAWannabeWriter30 is a new adult novel that dives into the complexities of trauma and healing. The realism of this story, combined with the immersive writing and intricate characters, never fails to make me feel so many emotions. If you're looking for a good cry, this story is for you!
The Lethal Encounter by MilaForLife is an action thriller novella. The banter between the brutal Ava and the kindhearted Jennie is excellent on its own, but with a fast-paced race for survival, this story kept me entertained from start to finish!
Knee Pads by violadavis is a college sports romance. It amazes me how Wren and Corinne are both so unique yet both so relatable to me! That fact, along with their amazing dynamic, the cool side characters, and all of the fun facts about roller derby, makes this story such a joy to read!
The Taste of Home by sandydragon1 is a paranormal romance. Not only do I love Miguel and Alejandro, the sweetest chefs in the kitchen, but this story does such a great job at taking social issues that plague our world and transforming them to apply to this fictional one. The way that this story highlights injustices is so powerful and important—and that's all while making chupacabra cuisine sound divine!
What would be the three words to describe yourself as an author?
>>Imaginative, passionate, overthinker 😂
Thank you so much! It was an honour to have you here for the interview conducted by Kalon Community. We wish you lots of success on your writing journey and may you flourish more. Thank you once again!
