Spotlight #4 : ninaisawip
Welcome, Wattpadders to another edition of Authors Spotlight with ninaisawip and their story If You Forget.
The story starts with the protagonist's fumbling thoughts and attempts to recall her memories. The characterization has been immaculately executed as it plunges the reader into the land of mystery and turmoil, as we embark on a journey of rediscovery.
The balance between show and tell gives us a sense to relate with the protagonist and leaves us wanting for more. As the story progresses we are left with more questions which are answered gradually as the story ends in a beautiful manner.
If you're a mystery lover and want to feel the thrill then this story is something you would definitely want to read.
We've also conducted an interview. Interested to know how this story came to be or the author's challenges in writing it? Read on to know more.
First of all thank you for having this lovely chat with us. We'll start with the inevitable question, What sparked the inspiration to write "If You Forget?
It all started with me sitting in my bedroom and thinking "What would happen if I suddenly lost all my memories?" I was 15 at the time, and the concept was both terrifying and fascinating, so after giving it some thought, I did what I always do — tried to turn it into a story. As soon as the idea formed, I was afraid of tackling it because I knew I'll need more experience as a writer to do anything remotely good with what I had in mind, but 4 years later, a conversation I had with a friend reminded me of it, so I decided it was time to pick it up again. :D
We're very thankful that the conversation happened, and we got to read this masterpiece. The protagonist in your story deals/suffers from amnesia, so can you tell our users what were your thoughts while writing the story? Any interesting behind the scenes?
Actually, while putting the story together, I realized it would be much better if I had a specific book to kick things into action, so I googled books that were a part of American high school curriculum. I read short description of lots of them, but "1984" caught my eye, and it seemed like just the thing I needed. I've heard a lot about that book before, but I've never actually read it, and plotting this book gave me the perfect excuse to do it! I think it worked out better that way, because I was reading it with a fresh pair of eyes and could easily imagine how Elainne would feel reading it, since she forgot everything she knew about the book before her amnesia. And honestly, it was a great read either way. xD
Interesting, wonder if any of the readers have read it. The protagonist Elainne is a teenager — so what according to you sets TeenFiction apart from other genres?
I think the best part is its flexibility and diversity. Whether the characters are solving a mystery, trying to survive high school and tackling their relationships, or exploring new magical worlds, there are always lots of possibilities to explore within a single genre, and the one thing that connects them all are young people who are discovering themselves and just trying their best to adapt to the imperfect world they live in.
That's a lovely way to put it. In the roller-coaster of life, we sometimes have those days that are not that bright and shinny — What's your go to cure for a bad day?
Honestly, sometimes the best thing you can do is to do nothing at all. Not every day can be perfect, and we all need to take a step back every now and then in order to continue forward even stronger. I'm not someone who can implement this very easily, since I just try to push on no matter how bad things get, but one thing that I always try to do is promise myself I'll do my best to make tomorrow a better day. Does it work every time? Not really, but at least I can be at peace knowing that I tried my best. And if all else fails, some music, comfy clothes, a nice book, and an extra cup of coffee or two never fail to make things at least a bit more bearable.
As they say less is more. You've come quiet a few steps ahead in your writing journey. Do you have any advice for your fellow/new writers?
I know this sounds cliché, but just keep writing! As much as all of us writers would love to see that happen, our stories aren't going to write themselves overnight. And trust me, first drafts suck. That's basically their job, so don't let that deter you! Even your favorite published authors had to pick apart at their first draft and rewrite it many times at some point. As long as you have fun doing it, it'll be worth it in the end. There's always some room to grow later. <3
We do love a good cliché. Sadly we've come to an end to this lovely conversation. What's your message for our readers, before we draw the curtains?
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for giving a chance to my books! As a writer, having people say that they enjoyed my works and carrying fragments of them in their minds even after they're done reading is one of the greatest gifts. <3
