Sugararmy07 - Aeonian (Mini Interview)
I'm here interviewing one of my favorite cover creators on Wattpad, and her name is sugararmy07, or Honey! Everyone, let's give a warm welcome to her!
Honey is an esteemed guest: she won the "Best Cover" category in the Padauk Awards for her cover for "Aeonian," and of course, I have a few questions for her. I mean, come on, look at that cover. Isn't it a beaut?
Alright, alright, enough intro, let's get into it and talk to Honey! Everyone, round of applause, now!
Bold is me, italics is Honey. Labels will be there, too.
Raven: Thank you so much for taking the time to submit to my contest. You know I always love your covers, and one of the things I praise most about them is just how clear and well-organized they are. Everything feels like it flows smoothly, leading to a satisfying visual experience that makes readers hooked, to say the least. And that leads me to my first question, a more general one just to warm up and give new readers a sense of what's going on: would you mind giving me an insight to your cover-designing process, like maybe the tools you use to edit and how you decide where to put your text and graphics on the covers?
Honey: Hey, Raven! I'm glad to have an interview with you. Thank you for the appreciation toward my covers. Generally, the first thing I do is register all the details given to me for the cover, specifically reading that small summary they provide me again and again. Then, I go on Pinterest. I scroll through hundreds of pictures to find that perfect one for the cover. I make two to four covers for choices. So, I always end up downloading a lot of pictures. Then, I use Canva for the editing as well as for typography. The main thing is to analyse the picture and sort out where the font should be placed, considering the colour scheme too. I usually tend to go for white color font and centre alignment (it always works). Also, if someone is reading this, I would tell you to use the cover of 512 × 800 pixels (standard size of the Wattpad cover) so that your cover would be cut from sides when you use it. I also go through a lot of font designs to find a suitable one for the specific cover. It all works out well.
Raven: Ah, I see, you're getting all fancy on me, aren't ya? Haha, I kid, I kid. I've heard a lot of good things about Canva, and I've used it here and there, so this is convincing me to get back into it and to stop using templates all the time. And I gotta say, Pinterest is the best place for pictures. I don't even have an account, but I go on the web version just to find all the cute boards and aesthetics. You have good taste, my friend.
Well, seeing as you won for your cover, I think it makes sense to ask you another cover question! What you won for was Aeonian, a oneshot book, and so far, there are three oneshots out (at the time of writing this question). If you had to make a cover for each individual oneshot, could you give some insight into what you'd make and why? I'm especially curious about what cover you'd make for the birthday one for no specific reason at all...
Honey: Well, if I had to make different covers for the oneshots, I would definitely focus on the central theme of every oneshot. The first oneshot is "Under the Moonlight" which is already converted into a short story named "Entangled Emotions" and already has its own cover which you can see on my profile. Second is "Noona" which is a kind of love confession scene and I would make it a little cute and cozy. The third one, which was out on your birthday featuring you, is "Birthday" and for that I would make something related to Jimin, of course (knowing how much you love him) It would be something eternally romantic. I would do a job where you would drool over him wink wink.
Raven: Awh, I love the idea of a cute and cozy cover! And of course I love the idea of a Jimin cover... I'd do anything to see a Jimin cover right about now 😍😍😍 Gosh, he is such a beautiful man. Beautiful, beautiful man. Good sweet lord heavens- okay, I need to stop before I drool over the very idea of it. Well, looks like you accomplished your goal without even needing to show me the real thing. Anywho! Next question! You've made a lot of covers for both yourself and others. That's another thing I like about your covers: I can tell you made it without even needing to see the cover credits. You just have such a distinct style that I can tell right away, which I think is very impressive. Out of all the covers you've made, would you mind telling me two or three of the ones you liked the most? And maybe if there are any covers you'd redo if you could?
Honey: Oh yes... I have made a lot of covers for a lot of people. I would say, I closed my previous graphics book after I completed more than 100 orders and now a new book is out. It feels like I'm improving every cover I make. To be honest, there are a lot of covers I like. I'm not flaunting, it's just my admiration for my own work. If I have to choose, probably "Scales" cover made for koya_kooky, "Warrior of Oirasora" for Abipwriting, "The scrounges of Past" for khushisweetie124, "Rekindled Embers" for Rahaf Eliwa and more. I love a lot of covers lmao, I can't include them all. Some of the instances of my favourite covers are below.
Honey cont'd: Yes, there are some covers which I would love to redo, specifically the rookie covers. My skills were not so polished back then.
Raven: Wow, I see why you love those, they're amazing. I mean, your covers always are, but these ones speak right to the soul. I particularly like The scrounges of Past, the cover has a lot of elegant yet chaos, it seems. As always, your designs are top-notch, and I can tell just by looking at them that they're yours, like I said before. I really can't overstate how your covers always look so clean and just like you to the point where I know it's yours just by looking at it. It's such an interesting aspect of your covers. There are only a handful of people on Wattpad I can say that about, like Seamlesslove and midnight_breezee. Ironically, both of them were winners in the "Best Cover" category too. I'm sensing a theme! Really cool to see such talented cover-makers on this site! But let's switch things up and do the opposite of that question! You've designed a lot of covers, like I said before, but are there any books or writers you haven't designed covers for that you'd love to? If so, would you mind sharing what image you have of your mind of the cover(s) you'd like to do for the book(s)/writer(s)?
Honey: This is an interesting question! Hmm... I have made so many covers and sometimes I have approached people myself whose stories I loved and they all dearly accepted the offer and I have made cover for them. They all loved it and appreciated what I'm very glad about. If any writer I think I want to make cover for now is Raven (yeah, you), An (Seamlesslove), SSears90, 4everSherlocked (Fun fact : I just made a cover for her), CJ (CJ_parkjennykim) and Kyra (which I already do) (Yootifully). Apart from them, I love the stories for 'jiminfication' (jiminfication) and that person in a bop writer. I hope I will have a talk with her someday and would love to make some covers for her. They all already have great covers, and I just want to pour my admiration for their work by making covers. They all are great. I do have some distinct pictures in my mind for their books. Some nicely designed fonts and placements. Just my little touch to their covers. They all are great.
Raven: I'm on the list? Gasp. MOM, I'M ON THE LIST. Well, I have a lot of books coming up, so you can probably expect me to come running to you asking if you'd be down to make a cover for me! It'd be an honor to say I got a cover from the legendary Honey. And, yay! Those are all some great authors and people, I love all of them. An is my musketeer, SSears is awesome, Sherly is the queen, Kyra is hilarious and honestly my bestie atp, and CJ is CJ. And all of us adore you, Honey! If you don't mind, I want to zoom out for a moment and ask you a question about you as a writer, since you have many books, and I can tell you're very passionate about what you do. As a writer, do you mind sharing what your goal is with writing, and what your favorite part of the writer's journey has been so far? Any advice for anyone new going through the writing journey?
Honey: Haha... Thank you for this question, I appreciate it. The fact is that I sometimes feel insecure about my writing. I feel that my graphic skills are somehow overshadowing my writing skills. But, that's just in my mind, of course. I have gained love for my writings and I love all of them. I would love to thank Kyra (Yootifully) who is my motivator, my best friend, permanent reader and so much more. She has always encouraged me for my writing work. My goal is to write a swoon-worthy book that everyone will enjoy. So far, I love my recent works more. I'm improving and I would love to showcase and enhance my skills more. My favourite part of this till now is the appreciation I see in the comments from my readers. This gives me motivation that someone is loving my stories. Plus, the friends I gained in this journey. I'm not going to leave you all ever. Advice for new writers? Just keep faith in yourself. I still need to edit my first story and if you'll read it you'll not be so happy (it's cliche enemies to lovers)... But now, I'm much more confident about my writing. Just keep faith, improve, write and ta da : one day you will feel it was worth it.
Raven: You definitely have strong graphic skills, and what I've noticed is all my favorite graphic designers have killer writing skills, like An, of course, and also Aravis-Brightspell. Aravis is really talented with both graphics and writing. I've read your work before, and I must say I hope you keep that love for writing since you have talent for it, that's for sure. And awwwh, that's so sweet, you're making my heart melt. We all love Kyra here, seriously. She's always so positive and encouraging, and her simping for Yoongi never gets old. And I of course love the little ta da, that's so adorable. I'm really happy for you, Honey, and I mean that. I wish you nothing but more happiness and success with your work, and I can't wait to continue being by your side for hopefully years to come. We're just about at the end of this mini interview, so before we get to the concluding thoughts, let's have one more question! Your title is "Aeonian," which means eternal and everlasting. Can you tell me how you decided to make this your title, and how you designed the cover based on that? Were there any particular reasons why you chose the background image you did?
Honey: "Aeonian" is a collection of oneshots. It is a collection and therefore I wanted to choose a title that can give the overall hint about the book. I chose this title because I wanted to convey that this fictional love and this fictional world isn't reality but still these are eternal and everlasting and we don't want to leave this small fictional world of ours. For the cover, it was specifically a Jungkook-centered book. So, I decided to choose a background picture which can give off the vibes of Jungkook. Of course, the man looks mysterious but somehow gives Jungkook vibes (I still don't know whose picture is that T-T). The black background pushed me to use white coloured font because who doesn't like the Black-White theme. I decided to place the title vertically on the side because it made the alignment look more nice and covered the empty space, giving a somewhat refreshing look. So, I do love that cover.
Raven: JUNGKOOK MENTIONED RAAAAH 🦅🦅🦅- sorry, instinct. I honestly got major Jungkook vibes from it and wanted to ask if he was Jungkook, but I felt like a fake Army for needing to ask ;-;. As you can tell, I loved the cover, so I think you absolutely slayed with it, and the title is sick too! I really like that philosophy that even though fiction is just that: fiction, it's still everlasting. It's true, isn't it? For example, we still study big papi Shakes (Shakespeare) to this day. The timelessness of fiction is what gives it a special charm, in my opinion. We never want to leave the fictional world because anything can happen in it. Anything we want can happen. When you think about it like that, it's really beautiful. Almost like a never-ending dream you can return to at any time.
We're at the end of the interview now, but before we go, do you have any final thoughts you'd like to share with the audience? Maybe some tips for making covers?
Honey: This interview was amazing. Thank you, Raven. I loved how you took time to frame questions particularly related to me and my work. I would say that the graphics world is full of innovation and you have the chance to improve your skills at every step. Even I myself only know Typography. Now, I'm doing some work on my editing skills too, thriving to enhance my skills more. Just trust yourself and go with the flow. Tips? As I said, 512 × 800 pixels cover. Look for a perfect picture, and always prioritize center alignment generally (of course, it's not necessary every time). The font should be attractive and keep the colour scheme in mind. It's all good. Cover making is very easy. Believe me! Thank you, Raven. It was a great talk with you. Take care.
You're more than welcome, thank you for taking the time to talk to me, sign up for my awards, and make such beautiful covers and works! I always try my best to make the questions well-rounded, so I'm glad to know that was a success!
That's fantastic advice. Sometimes one of the biggest mistakes I see with covers when I'm judging are the dimensions being wrong. Simply tweaking the dimensions can make such a huge difference, so definitely listen to this advice, everyone! And Honey is the queen of good fonts and text placements, so if you're gonna study anyone's text, definitely make it hers!
I'm so glad I got to talk to you today. These answers were super fun, and I enjoyed the interview immensely. Everyone, that wraps up today's interview, but I hope you liked it, and I hope you guys check out Honey's profile!
~Fin~

I'll see you guys in the next one!
