Interview 35

Where are you from?

Colombia

How old are you?

14

What and who inspired you into reading and/or writing?

I think I wrote my first book when I was four, maybe five. I didn't read anything and just got so inspired that I decided, "wow! I wanna be a writer!" I think I just was naturally inclined into it. My parents encouraged me and that's how I started writing for fun.

What was the first book that you read that started your love for reading?

I remember I came home one day with this book from the school's library, and I was like, "mom, mom, look!" I was so excited because I really, really loved that book. That's when I started actually consistently reading. The book was The Report Card by Andrew Clements.

What was the turning point in your life that you decided to take your writing seriously?

I remember it was around two years ago (when I was twelve.) I had just finished reading The School For Good and Evil trilogy (three books.) I was so hooked, I basically didn't look up for more than a couple of minutes once my parents got me the book. When I was done, I was just thinking, "Wow, what a cool, interesting, captivating book." I realized I wanted to be that good a writer one day and I concluded that if I wanted to be an author like that, I'd have to apply myself much more.

What is the inspiration for your stories?

Honestly, I'm a pretty quiet person when I'm with people I don't know, which means I listen and look a lot. When someone says or does something interesting, sometimes ideas related to that come to mind, so I start to expand on them.

Do you outline your stories or write whatever comes to mind?

I usually do a small outline and then write. I write down the key events that need to happen in the story so that I can at least stay on track, and then just write.

What is your method of beginning to writing a book?

I try to focus on the characters more in the beginning, so that the readers can get to know them. I place them in a situation and think about what my character would do next.

Do you ever get attached to the characters in your story? If so, what part of their personality or quirks do you find relatable?

I do get attached to my characters. Not to all of them, because some I dislike, but I get really attached to characters that I can relate to or that are just straight up heartwarming.

Do you base your characters on people in your personal life, imagination, or both?

Definitely both. While I never use their names, I have noticed that I do tend to base my characters' physical characteristics on the people around me, so I usually try to be creative and change a little. As for personalities, I feel like I do imagine those, however, I do still steal little quirks or behavior I notice others have.

What is the best part of writing a story?

The climax or the plot twist. For sure, I get the trill and it's super exciting.

How do you deal with writer's block?

I either try to get to a place that has lots of people, or I try to do something I don't usually do.

Would you want to see your story or stories be adapted? If so, who would you want to play your characters?

I only have one published work on wattpad right now, which is a poetry collection that I wouldn't really like adapted. However, I would like some of my unpublished works to be turned into a movie. That'd be so cool!

What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

Work hard and have discipline. Believe in yourself.

Are you working on a new story?

I actually have two stories under progress. I don't want to give away too much, but one will be an action-fantasy with a little bit of romance. The other is about a singer and a hopeless romantic. Get excited!
