Interview 34

Where are you from?

Michigan! But I live in Arizona now.

How old are you?

26

What and who inspired you into reading and/or writing?

My mother is a big reader and made books a huge part of my childhood. I was pretty shy so books were my way of understanding people. I always wanted to be able to create that for someone else.

What was the first book that you read that started your love for reading?

Remembering book names is my greatest weakness, so I really don't remember which one really sealed the deal. I think the very first book I read on my own was Green Eggs and Ham around the age of four.

What was the turning point in your life that you decided to take your writing seriously?

Just a year ago, I decided failure wasn't that scary. Who cares if I write the most terrible and cliche book in existence? It was time to give it my all and see what came out.

What is the inspiration for your stories?

Just life! I like finding the fantasy within every day. It's one of my beliefs that we are each living our own fairytale right now.

Do you outline your stories or write whatever comes to mind?

Outline, absolutely. My storyline will go pretty off course if I'm not careful.

What is your method of beginning to writing a book?

For the book I am writing now, I started with writing the initial scene I had in my head. It's the first chapter. From there I defined my characters for myself, their looks, and personality. Lastly, I made a loose outline or goal. Once I had all this it was easier for me to stay on track.

Do you ever get attached to the characters in your story? If so, what part of their personality or quirks do you find relatable?

Ha, my characters feel like part of my soul sometimes. I get embarrassed for them. I really love how my character Kai just wants the best for everyone, but can really be clueless. Juniper I adore because she wants to be open and vulnerable, but her ability to see and sense things others might not leave her a bit on edge.

Do you base your characters on people in your personal life, imagination, or both?

Both!

What is the best part of writing a story?

When your own characters surprise you.

How do you deal with writer's block?

I don't. I usually walk away for a long time or I find some brainwave music. I'm not good at writing to just "push through."

Would you want to see your story or stories be adapted? If so, who would you want to play your characters?

I would love for my stories to be either a webtoon or a show. I'm not sure who would play my characters but I would want a very diverse cast.

What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

Just do it. Write your best and finish it, then go back and write it again.

Are you working on a new story?

I'm still finishing up "Found You" but I have the second part constantly in the back of my mind. It focuses on the character Griffin, who is honestly the side character who has stolen my heart.
