Chapter 6

The voice in my head tells me to run, but I can't leave Reece behind with this deranged man. After all, he was my savior back when I fell off of my bike. Quickly putting my arms down, I bend over and walk over to the side of the gazebo to get a better look.

"What do you mean you don't know where he went with the book. You two were just together a moment ago," the man yells as he flails his arms in the air.

"I don't know," Reece says as he shrugs his shoulders. "As I said, he's gone. I showed you that I don't have the book anymore, so what else do you want from me?"

The man scoffs, visibly upset as he turns his head and spits on the ground. With a quick wipe over his face, he gets closer to Reece and stares at him with wide eyes.

"I know you're bluffing, how else would you know to come to this exact spot?" The man then turns to walk towards the gazebo, Reece walking in front of him with his hand in front of his chest.

Reece is going to get himself hurt. I can't let him do this for my sake. If I don't step in and do something before this dude goes crazy, who knows what'll happen.

I stand up straight, trembling as I look on. My lip quivers as Reece stands his ground, hand almost touching the man's chest.

"I'm not letting you go back there," Reece says as he raises his voice.

The man groans and immediately sprints in my direction. My hands shake, noisily moving the chest around. The heavy lock on the front slowly clatters on the side, giving away my position to anyone standing in the area. I look down at the lock and grab it with my other hand, but I knew it was too late. I look up and make eye contact with Reece.

"Run Vincent!" If I knew Reece was panicking, then I knew I had to run fast.

I head in the direction of my bike, running faster than the speed of light. The man turns and begins to chase after me. My body fills with fear, sweat dripping down from my forehead.

Why do I have to get myself into these situations? Reece just continues to drag me down, imagine what my family would be thinking.

"Come here kid, I'm not going to hurt you. Give me the chest and we'll forget this ever happened."

With the few options I have for getting out of this, I do some quick thinking and come up with the best plan I have in mind. I stop and turn towards the man, who's making his way from the front of the gazebo. Reece looks on as the man approaches me, who sticks both of his hands out to receive the small chest. In an instant, I grunt and throw the heavy object at the man. Striking his head, he falls down to his side as the chest goes the other way. I pant and catch my breath, looking at the unmoving body laying down in front of me. Reece runs over and looks at the man, then looks back up at me.

"That was amazing Vince! You knocked him out unconscious! We have to hurry and get out of here before he wakes up."

I look down at the chest and pick it up, looking at the man on the ground.

"I don't know Reece," I say nervously. "I can't believe I just did that to another person. I've never had to fight someone before in my life."

Reece suddenly comes close to me, calming me down as my knees begin to twitch from my fear.

"It's fine bud, it was in self-defense anyways. This guy has been stalking us for hours now, harassing us the entire night. Let's just leave him here and run." Reece bends over to look at me in my eyes, still having my head down as I stare at the passed-out man.

I lift my head up and look at Reece saying, "You're right. If I didn't do what I did, who knows what he would've done. I'll feel better if we could move him to the gazebo just to get under some sort of shelter."

"Alright, let's do that quickly and then get out of here." Reece then walks over to the man and grabs him by the arms.

I put down the chest onto the ground and help by grabbing the unconscious man by his feet. The two of us drag him along the grass and over to the steps of the gazebo. We begin to bring him up the stairs when a small item falls out of the man's pocket. After bringing him up the stairs and setting him down on a bench in the middle, I walk down and grab the item that clanked down the steps. After picking it up and examining it, I notice it's a butterfly knife. My eyes grow wider than the Pacific ocean. I walk over to Reece and show him. His jaw nearly touches the ground as I pocket the weapon.

I take a loud sigh and say, "Good thing I knocked him out when I did. Luckily we disarmed him, now we just need to make sure he stays as far away from us as possible."

I walk down the steps and out onto the grass where I retrieve the chest.

"We might as well see what's inside of the chest then," Reece says as he follows behind me.

It would've been hard to open the lock without a key, growing more impatient as I stare at the keyhole. Reece reaches his hand out for the chest, placing the cold surface into his possession. Suddenly, he reaches down and smashes the front lock onto the ground, breaking it into multiple pieces.

"That wasn't too hard now was it?" Reece says as he laughs it off.

"Hopefully nothing is too valuable inside, we need to keep whatever it is intact," rolling my eyes and shaking my head as I take out the rest of the pieces.

I slowly unhitch the hook on the front, opening the top and exposing what was inside. I slowly pull it out and examine what it is.

I look up at Reece and say, "It looks like a map of Drumford City Hall. That's where we have to go next, no wonder why this guy was following us. This might be where the treasure is!" I place the map in my pocket as I think about what to do with the empty chest.

As soon as I finish speaking, a loud groan comes from the gazebo.

"Dammit, my head is killing me..." a voice says in the distance.

Reece and quickly look at each other faces as pale as ghosts. We make our way to our bikes on the ground and pick them up, pedaling towards the way we came in, throwing the chest in a trash can at the corner of the pathway. Although part of me worries for the man following us, both Reece and I had to keep pushing forward.

We were on our way to City Hall.
