PERSONALITY
{Happy-Go-Lucky}

He's a silver lining.
Rafael wouldn't inconvenience someone if he were on fire and they had a hose. He'll do his best to stay out of people's way as much as possible and will insist on helping even with the smallest things- it's sort of his nervous tick, finding someone to help out. He talks to strangers way too often. Really naïve. Rafael choses to trust people a lot, and because of that gets screwed over often. Still, he's yet to learn his lesson. There's never been anyone to sway his faith in humanity. Cannot stay still for too long.

LIKES| Travel • flying planes • getting lost in big cities • making people smile • trains (ha... nerd) • going on walks • listening to people talk •

DISLIKES|small spaces • tense/quiet situations • more than one person's attention at a time • having to interrupt •

BACKGROUND

His parents divorced at around the time he was five. His mother had gone out, traveled the world, and fallen in love with a Haitian woman by the name of Angelica. Since they were the country's only heirs, Rafael and his older brother had to stay with his father. His brother took it personally, developing a deep hatred towards their mother for 'abandoning them' , but when Rafael was old enough he accepted that she deserved to be happy and that his brother was hurt. Their father remarried, eventually, but he never had any more kids. At around the time he was twelve, since he wasn't the first in line for the throne, Rafael began spending more and more time at his mothers' place, who eventually introduced him into their collective, extended family, some of which wasn't even related to him by blood but he never questioned as he called them tio or tia, as they became his cousins and little sisters and eventually older brothers. His brother never Really forgave him for the 'betrayal'. He hasn't been I close contact with either his brother or his father's family since he was eighteen.

' SIN '

He was a stupid, soft hearted fool and she was the sun. Valentina was lovely and bright and she was always so nice to him- a Stark contrast to everyone else in his father's house, who seemed to hate him. She was funny, she made fun of his father's long, boring speeches, snuck him out to see the low-end places of town, recommended the best books. She was as beautiful as she was kind.

But she wasn't his. She was her brother's, and if the treaty Cuba and Mexico were trying to fortify was to remain, she would stay his forever. She was his in every aspect of the word, but her heart belonged to someone else.

Rafael didn't mean for it to happen- he would never purposely do something like that to anyone, especially family. But the years passed, and they were nineteen, stupid and in love. So they ran off behind everyone's backs. They got numb with expensive wine no one would ever touch, they ran through the cities were no one would recognize them, where people were poor but simple and kind, where they were safe, and in secrety, they were together.

Eventually they had to grow up. His father was the one to find out first, doubling home early from a conference and stumbling in to something he shouldn't have seen. And just like that, Valentina was gone. There was a slap on his face that still burned after all those years and cuts on his knees from when he was quite literally thrown out of his house.

He went back to the only real home he ever knew, having to watch as the girl he once knew married to and raised the children of a man who had the same blood as him running through his veins from afar.

His father was very clear that day, the last day he saw him. She was better off without him, he told Rafael. It would be best, for her, if he only forgot about her, and never tried to make contact again.
