Prologue
Day before Murder
"Dextrous, you have disappointed me. I have expected a minimum good strategy for the next document production" Delilah glares at Dextrous.
"Sir, I'm exceedingly sorry that I was unable to construct a document that wasn't able to satisfy you" Dextrous scoffed.
"Listen, this isn't a small issue. We have to get prepared with a plan with maximum profits and less investments. I don't want to ruin my company just because of a failure in a plan" he warns her.
"If that so, why don't you make a plan that's completely of your choice which will never fail, I guess?" Dextrous rolled her eye at Delilah.
Delilah was about to lose his temper.
"Are we forever competitors, Dextrous?" She was caught off guard by his question. She blinked her eyes just to analyse what he just said.
Are they really forever competitors?
Dextrous wills never matter in that company, no matter if she was the oldest employee over there.
"I think yes, yes Mr. Black. We are forever competitors. My decisions never matter to this company. Even if I give the most suitable proposal that includes risk control and the maximum chances of our shares gets into the market with very less company investment, you will never be satisfied Mr. Black, because the problem lies within yourself, not in me. You take my ideas, proposals, everything but in return you never appreciated me. I never got promotion, yet I never asked for. For so many years I devoted myself to this company and in return I got nothing Sir." She yelled at him and he lost his temper.
"Nobody shouts at me, Dextrous, you are fired!" He shouted back but Dextrous froze.
"What did you say?" She put her hands on her hip, frustrated.
"You heard me, you are fired." He lowered his voice and went to sit on his chair.
"I worked here since your business started. How can you just fire me?" She yelled again and slammed her hand on the meeting table.
"I'm your boss, and I hold the power to fire you in any circumstances when I know you're unworthy. Now I ask you to leave my office." He looks at Dextrous, and shouted "right now!"
Dextrous couldn't move from her place, she just couldn't walk away. She had her entire life working under Delilah Black's Business Corporation. She glared at him.
Mr. Black, you need to pay for this. No matter how much you are dear to me. I won't spare you so easily for this betrayal you did. I owe a half share of this Company but you are firing me.
"Fine!" She walked towards the exit door, opened the door without turning she said "Take care Mr. Black" the door was slammed hard.
"Even if you won't live long" Dextrous muttered under her breath.
*******
At evening, Dextrous messaged Blaise,
Hello Blaise,
Dear I know you're busy but can you come and meet me at Hot Pot Caféteria at 7 o' clock in the evening?
I have something to tell you that's eating me.
Baby, I can't think properly, my mind ain't at peace, I'm losing control from stuffs around me and that's not my style.
I need you to listen me.
I'll be waiting for you.
ILY xx
Your Dex
After a few while, her phone vibrated signalling someone sent a message to her, it was Blaise.
I can do that.
I'll be there.
ILY xx
She hugged her phone to her chest, realising how much pain it was to break up with him.
It hurted her to get ready to spit those shameful words.
————————
Blaise didn't make her wait for long.
She saw Blaise coming to the cafe through the window.
Dextrous looked at him as he entered the cafe, their eyes got locked. Blaise seemed to be afraid, Dextrous knew Blaise too well to tell whats going in his head.
She waved at him, both smiled but Dextrous was sad wasn't confident. It was like she was killing herself by breaking up with someone so much caring.
The waiter arrived, Dex ordered two coffees for both of them and Blaise took a seat opposite to her. He looked worried, his eyes narrowed as Dextrous began to speak.
"Um...Blaise, I know this will be awkward but I have to," She hesitated to complete the statement "I want to break up with you. I have fallen for someone else and Double boats aren't my thing" she closed her eyes to avoided Blaise's reaction.
Dex knew, Blaise was thinking this odd, but she had to do this to save both of them from losing their minds.
Dextrous simply lied to Blaise, she was now jobless and she didn't want to burden Blaise with the thought that now she couldn't afford what she used to. She couldn't tell Blaise that that morning itself Mr. Black fired her. She loved Blaise but she cannot bear the pity that Blaise will show if she would tell him the truth.
Dextrous opened one eye and saw Blaise sitting opposite to her, astonished!
"Someone else?" Emotions whirled within him, it was clearly visible though he tried to keep his face neutral, one eyebrow slightly raised.
"Who is this person?" he was concerned and calm.
Tears spring to her eyes, she knew she can not hold back the tears anymore.
"Blaise, um...I'm sorry, but there is someone and I should keep it secret because I'm afraid that you'll go and hurt him." Dex doesn't look at him, she was staring at her hands as if she was telling lie. Her hands were shaking.
Blaise I'm sorry, I never lied to you. I know, we both know how much we love each other and if I tell you that Mr. Black fired me and I'm jobless. I'm sure you'll lose your temper and either you'll kill him or burn him alive.
Her soul cried within.
But when Blaise kept himself so calm the whole time unlike his nature, she looked up at him. Dex could feel the energy between them that already started to fall apart.
Blaise's eyes slowly narrowed. He folded his arms across his chest slowly, almost malevolently.
Dex knew a bit of his history-the less than legal kind-but she also knew he'd been careful not to tell her everything. There were some things better kept to himself than revealing to her which was alright with Dex.
Blaise sighed, closed his eyes for a second or two, and then opened them slowly as if hurt. In the slight tending of his neck muscles, and the square set of his jaw, the riptide of anger he was restraining could be seen. Otherwise, he was as cool as marble.
"Really? You think I'd hurt him? I thought you knew me better than that, Dex. I've known you for long enough to know when you're lying, too," he replied cooly, forcing himself to relax as subtly as he could. Controlling rage never had been how strong suit, but bottling it for later for him.
If she could tell Blaise the truth, it would have been very easy, but it ain't. The truth will destroy their lives and will leave them in despair.
Tears fell down from her eyes, she avoided to meet his eyes. She knew Blaise will catch her lie because Blaise knew her too well to know every move of her.
"Look I'm sorry. Neither I have any other options and nor I'm lying to you." She wiped her tears from the cheeks, "this is what I had to inform you that I'm breaking up with you and I don't think we should meet anymore. At least I'll not talk to you for somedays. I need space"
Beneath the table, she heard that he flicked the lighter on and off, on and off. It helped to keep him calm, he always carried the lighter in his pocket.
"Take all the time you need, I'll keep my distance from you." Blaise took a shaky breath, offering her a slight, calming smile just to make her believe his words.
Dex knew he could give her space. Sure. Space from everyone. Space from himself, and from the guy she'd met. He'd need to scope the guy out of course, and he wouldn't hurt him - of course not.
She could feel the rage that rippled beneath his skin.
Dextrous stood up keeping herself upright, "Good bye, Blaise. It was really nice knowing you. I swear I loved you with all my heart." She walked away without facing him.
And yet, her heart ached just as his as Dex left. It felt like she was leaving a little part of her in the cafeteria.
"I'll always love you dear" she muttered under her breathe silently, hardly possible if he would have been heard that.
She exited the cafeteria, stood outside and took a last look at him from the window of the cafeteria, and she was drowning herself in tears.
He turned towards the window, at her and muttered something that was not heard by Dextrous.
She faced away from him, still cried silently, took a cab and went away to her apartment.
