Phase 1: That night
Dextrous called Daniel to know where he was but he never picked her call, so she retired to her room as the alcohol was doing its work in her body.
She hurried down to her room, she was feeling dizzy so she ran toward her room and bumped into someone.
Dex looked up to find Blaise standing right infront of her room with a bottle of cider.
What was he doing over there? She thought.
Dex turned away to run from him, but his strong arms grabbed Dex arm before she could run away and lead themselves to her room. Blaise locked the door.
Dex couldn't run away as all of it happened in a blink of an eye. She was hurt not because Blaise had grabbed her to her room but she was aching for his touch.
Blaise looked down at his hand on Dex’s arm. He released his grip with a touch, not too much force for it to seem natural. He looked up at her, she could see the hot anger in his eyes, coupled with hurt he was trying to side.
“What are you doing here?” He asked, incredulous.
The headache resisted her to process any information into her head. But she looked at him when he was the first to speak.
"This is my room, at least for tonight. Where else I would be? Where have you thought I would be ?" She interrogated him back.
“You know that’s not what I mean.” He turned away from her, took a few steps across the room, and then turned back again.
Blaise was about to say something, but instead he sighed. “Didn’t expect to see you again so soon, after yesterday. Definitely didn’t expect you to be here at old Deli’s party,” he scoffed.
Dex couldn't stand anymore. She turned towards her bed, tossed her clutch purse and shoes on the floor, and sat on the bed with her hand on her head.
"Honestly Blaise, I don't know what you meant and I didn't expect to see you either. I came here upon an invitation, you know I work for that man." Dex squeezed her forehead, the alcohol was making her feel weak, "Earlier I decided not to attend this but later I ended up here. Why are you here ?"
“I know you work for him, but I didn’t think it was this kinda work. Thought it was behind the scenes kinda stuff. Doesn’t matter.” He waved his hand dismissively as he leaned against the wall across the bed.
Dex watched him, he was drunk.
“Got an invite too, couple days ago or something. Guessed it wouldn’t be so bad. Knew Deli a few years back, not for long, but we had business together.” He slid down the wall and sat with his hands on his knees.
Dex looked at him the whole time he talked, without blinking her eyes, she was taking him in. She was carried away by the love she still had for him. The four walls seemed to suffocate her.
Emotions stuck at her throat, any moment she could cry to him. She brought her hands to cover her face after he finished talking and laid back to the bed.
"Blaise?" Still covered her face, she whispered.
How can this hurt so much? Emotions were overwhelming in her heart. Time may be have betrayed her. The one from whom she was running away whole day, was now infront of her conversing with her.
She wanted to run and embrace him and tell him the truth that she lied to him.
But alas! She couldn't do that, he would grab Delilah right there and tear him off.
“Yeah?” He asked, voice the kind of soft it only ever was with her, it showed only concern and love.
It was heartbreaking pain that she was feeling. She trembled as she heard his calm voice. Tears ran through her corner of eyes.
Her hands moved to her sides, she stared at the ceiling and closed her eyes as if she was hurt for a long time. This feeling was tearing her apart. Either she would die due to this overwhelming pain or she would lose her mind.
"How are you feeling? I want to heal you." She started sobbing silently.
Though Dex wasn't seeing him, but she could feel his eyes on her.
“How am I feeling? Didn’t expect you to do that, Dex. Definitely didn’t expect it to hurt that much either. Plenty of things I expect to happen. You just about cheating on me? Never imagined that would happen.” His voice cracked near the end. He made an attempt to cover it with a cough, but it didn’t quite work.
“How’re you doing?” He asked after a beat of silence.
His voice made her feel guilty of her deed. She was weeping longing for him even though he was so close to her, still miles away from her.
She let out a silent mourn as if her heart died. It was a lament for him. She clutched the sheets while she heard him.
Her eyes were closed shut when he asked her. Her head was throbbing in pain.
"I'm broken Blaise," she finally let herself to make sounds of her sob, "You....."
Her hands moved to her face, to rub off the tears "You expect...too much" she slurred while she cried.
"I never wanted to hurt you, I love you Blaise"
Her mind was off, the alcohol took the control. She was carried away by the grief that she had been suffering from.
She heard Blaise flicked the lid off of the bottle in his hand and took a long drink, relaxing against the wall once he was done. He then closed the bottle and stood up, heading over to the other side of the bed.
She felt as Blaise laid down on the bed opposite to her, but was too afraid to open her eyes and see him.
“I burn shit down for fun, Dex. Who’d you think’s really the fucked up one of the two of us?” He replied, still in that soft voice.
She was, trembling with pain and guilt of hurting him. She heard him, slowly asking her.
"Whatever you burn, it never mattered to me, I just wanted to keep us safe. I know it's selfish," she sighed painfully "I guess I'm the fucked up."
“Guess we’re both fucked up then, in one way or another,” he sighed, keeping his eyes closed.
He stayed silent, Dex opened her eyes to see Blaise's eyes were shut. She was staring at him, taking in every detail that was hurt just because of her. Suddenly he spoke up again, while his eyes were closed and numb.
"Didn’t expect good much. Just expected you to be worthwhile of my trust.” These words were said more quietly. His silent words cut her off. Tears spring to her eyes, staring at the ceiling she cried her heart out.
Dex kept quiet, just let him burn her. This time not with fire but with his words.
“You know I love you too. But...why’d you do it? Why’d you break up with me like that if you didn’t want to?” Blaise asked her.
"Because I was a fool Blaise, because I didn't have any other choice." Dex sobbed.
“Didn’t have any other choice?” In a second, the anger was reignited within him. He sat up on his elbows and looked at her with furrowed brows.
"I didn't fall for anybody else. I was fired by Delilah...I was jobless, if I had told you, you would for sure have been burnt him down to ashes. I lied to you to save us, save you Blaise!" She shouted while crying. As soon as the words left her mouth, her palms covered her lips and her eyes went wide. She stared at Blaise with fear and being dumb.
"There’s nothing I’d have done to put you in danger. You know that, I hope you knew that. I could've helped you through whatever it was, wouldn’t have hurt him if you hadn’t wanted me to.” he scoffed, sitting up properly again, his back to her, "Fuck, Dex, Im not a psychopath. Can control my anger a bit,”
He sat in silence for the next minute or so, and then the puzzle pieces seemed to slot into place in his mind, “does that mean there was no one else?” It was a splinter of comfort throughout all that.
"Yes, there is no one else. I've always loved you. I still love you."Dex sighed "I lied to you to save us, to save you Blaise. I knew you. In the heat of the moment you would have gone and killed Delilah"
She kept looking at his back while she whispered those words.
“I love you too.” He whispered lovingly. "Wouldn’t have killed him if it’d have been dangerous. Don’t even know where the guy stays. Plus, had my own reasons to hate him for ages. If I wanted to kill him...” he paused, looking down at the bottle in his hands, “I would’ve when I had the chance,” he replied.
Dex stared at him in shock,"Blaise, are you alright? Why are you telling things like this which are completely unlike your nature ?"
Dex sat up, and faced Blaise's back and muttered "You always burn down things, tear apart shit & beat someone ass until your blazing rage comes to an surface." She touched his back, "Why are you so cold?"
Blaise sighed to himself. “Maybe you don’t know me as well as you think you do,” he replied dismissively, not wanting to discuss how true that was.
Blaise ran his thumb over the label on the side of the bottle.
He brushed her hand off, and stood up again, turning to face her. “Cold? How am I fucking cold? I’m not the one that broke up with someone cause of their damn job. If you ask me, that makes you the cold one of the two of us.”
Dextrous glared at him.
"I guess you're absolutely right." She faced away from him. The fact that she knew him well enough to tell his rage was his king, but he pretended that she didn't know that offended her.
She looked at the window and crossed her legs.
"Then why did you come here tonight to me? You and I were not expecting each other. So why don't you let me go when I was about to run away from you?" She scoffed in anger and pain.
How could Blaise say something so harsh to Dextrous? But then, Dex realised it was normal to say to someone who have hurted him so badly. So it was alright to listen those stingful words that hit her straight to her heart. Dex closed her eyes, and opened to see Blaise, who was angry again.
Dex knew, she had made him angry once again. She could sense the flickered anger within him.
"Why did I come here? Why the fuck do you think, Dex? You said you know me, and yet you somehow don’t get that I love you.” After what it felt like decade he spoke out.
“It doesn’t really matter that you broke my heart. I still fucking love you. If you didn’t want me here, you should’ve kicked me out when you first saw me. I can’t stay away from you. I can’t. Cause even though you hurt me that shitting much, you’re still the only fucking person in the world I want to talk to about all this, about us, about tonight, all of it.” He exhaled angrily, scratching the back of his neck to give himself something to do.
Dex smiled knowing, he needed the match boxes or the lighter. Fire is oxygen for Blaise's blazing temper.
“If you don’t fucking get that after all this time. Then maybe I’ll just leave right now,” he stood, and headed for the door.
Dex somehow wanted to time travel back to the day when she broke up. She wanted to correct this, she wanted to take him on a date like they used to. A date that could calm both of them, and help them to move on from that fake break up, if only, if only Blaise wanted the same.
"Blaise ?" Dextrous suddenly called him when he was about to leave.
"I'm sorry, I had lost my mind. Fine, I'm happy that you're here." Dex smiled and threw her arms open for him, "Come let's have a date here in my room. Tonight is already ruined, let's make it better with a date?"
Dextrous waited for his reaction. She smiled at him like the first time she ever saw him. She waited patiently.
A sudden noise was heard outside her room. They both looked toward the door. People were running behind something in the first floor hallway.
