Chapter 4

Sophie's POV

Rain falling down on all sides. Linh. She needed Linh. Linh would help. "I can't hold them for much longer, Sophie!" A voice cried from her left. She tried to see who it was, but the rain was blocking her view.

Suddenly, three figures in long black cloaks ran and grabbed her. "Help! Someone, please!" she cried. Who were these figures? The Neverseen? No, there was no white eye shape on the sleeve.

"Sophie? Are you okay? Where are you?" The voice asked her. She tried to reply, but the figures had pressed something against her mouth. She froze for a second when she realized what it was. A sedative.

No! She thought in her head. She tried transmitting, but it seemed like her something was blocking her. "She's trying to use her abilities again! We need to knock her out." Someone screamed. She had to help them!

Someone kneeled down and whispered in her ear, "Your friends are gone now. You will never save your mother. You have nothing." Then everything went black.

Sophie awoke with a start. Sweat soaked her covers. She panted heavily and quietly got up. She grabbed her memory log and projected her nightmare. She watched it replay a couple times. It looked so real. Sandor peeked his head in the door.

"Is everything all right, Ms. Foster?" Sandor asked in his squeaky voice. She nodded her head. "Sorry, just couldn't sleep," she replied. He narrowed his eyes but closed the door. She sighed and went back to sit on her bed.

Sophie couldn't sleep anymore, so she quietly opened her window and let the cool breeze flow into her room. She remembered the last time she had slept at a window was in Alluvettere, with Keefe.

She wondered how he was doing. Had he found anything else about his mom? Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she saw three black-cloaked figures walking along the beach outside. She sucked in a breath. The Neverseen was here? But when she looked closer, she didn't see a white eye on the sleeve.

Just like her dream. She ran to grab her memory log and compared the figures. There was no mistaking it. They were the same. So did that mean... her dream was real?

Keefe's POV

Keefe couldn't sleep. He paced his room. Thoughts of Sophie kept coming back to his head. She was so much braver than she let on. Her mother disappears, and she sighs in relief??? He wished he was as brave as her. But he couldn't ever tell her about her feelings. Not when she still liked Fitz.

Fitz. Why was he glaring at Sophie? He understood why Fitz was glaring at him, but why Sophie? "Come on, you're an empath. Figure it out," he muttered under his breath. Keefe sighed and walked over to the window. He recalled his window sleepovers with Sophie.

Ro snorted from the corner. "Just because I'm sure our hot blondie is doing the exact same thing right now by pacing around trying to find the answers to the universe, doesn't mean she's going to call you."

His imparter buzzed and he looked at it. It was Sophie. How did she know he was awake? He looked at Ro and showed her his imparter. He cracked up when she rolled her eyes. "Hello?" He answered. "KEEFE! Oh, thank goodness," a voice came from the other side. He smirked. "Wow, that excited to see me, Foster?"

She blushed. He grinned. She glared. "This is important, Keefe,"

"Must be for interrupting my beauty sleep." She suddenly looked apologetic. "Oh no, I'm sorry, Keefe. Were you asleep?" He sighed and tore a hand through his hair. "Nah, I was just thinking about-uh, stuff."

She got an adorable crease between her eyebrows. "Your mom?" She asked hesitantly. He was most certainly not going to tell her that he was thinking about her, so he nodded. Ro smirked and he cleared his throat. "Anyway, tell me about what's so important?"

Sophie replayed her dream for him and explained how she saw figures. He sucked in a breath. "Do you know what any of it means?" He asked when she was finished.

She shook her head and tore out an eyelash. "I have no idea. But they were holding up a crystal that leaps to the council's home, so I guess we'll find out. Well, if the council tells us."

They talked for a little longer, and then Sophie left to have breakfast. Keefe sighed and flopped onto his bed. "Wow, you are head over heels for her," Ro said from the corner. Keefe didn't even try to deny it, so he just lay there.
