Chapter 2

Sophie's POV

Sophie was at a loss for words. "W-well, maybe she just went to the Black Swan...?" Biana said slowly. Della shook her head. "We contacted them yesterday and they said they haven't seen her since last week."

"It's been a week?" Sophie finally managed to say. Della shook her head again. "We don't know for sure. We saw her last a couple of days ago," A couple of days??  Sophie thought. She felt horrible that she hadn't checked in with Dex, he was her best friend after all. Della continued, "We're not sure where she is now, but we think-" she was interrupted by Alden and Kesler coming out of their office. Sophie tried catching Alden's eye but he wouldn't look at her.

Della rushed over to them and Dex put his head in his arms. "Any news?" She asked hopefully. Alden sighed and said, "Not yet, but we're sure we'll find her." He leaned over and whispered something into Della's ear. She paled and quickly looked over at Sophie and back at Alden again. Kesler looked like he had also been crying.

Kesler cleared his throat and muttered something to Alden. Sophie couldn't hear, but Keefe did and he casually made his way over to her. He pointed to his head and Sophie could tell he wanted her to open her mind to his.

What did you hear? Sophie transmitted. Okay, please don't freak out, but... I heard Kesler say, "I think you should tell Sophie. She deserves to know." Keefe thought. WHAT? Keefe winced. I told you not to freak out!

Sophie tried not to let anyone know that she and Keefe were communicating. Fitz frowned, but no one else looked at them, they were too focused on Alden, who was telling them that there was "No reason to worry,"

What did Alden say? She asked him. He said that you had enough to worry about and not to tell you. Keefe replied.

Did you hear what it was that Alden didn't want to tell me? Sophie asked Keefe. No, but Kesler sounded pretty determined. Keefe replied

Sophie glared at Alden. Why wouldn't they tell me? What were they talking about in Alden's office? Does Juline's disappearance have to do with me? Where did Juline go? Why can't I know?!?! A new voice came in. Listen, Foster, I don't know the answers to any of those questions, but you should probably ask Alden. And tell me what he says afterward!  Sophie forgot that Keefe could still hear her thoughts.

Keefe's POV

It turned out Sophie wasn't going to wait, though. "What shouldn't I know?" She directed the question at Alden, and he looked up at her, surprised. He threw a glance in Keefe's direction and Keefe batted his eyelashes innocently. Alden sighed and said, "It's nothing to worry about now. First, we should find out where Juline is."

Sophie looked disappointed, so Keefe quickly asked Alden, "Don't you think Foster deserves to know? I mean, you are talking about her. Or something to do with her. And I'm kinda guessing that it's important." Sophie gave him a grateful smile that lit up her face. But then it fell again when Alden shook his head.

"As I said, there is no reason to worry. I'll tell you later." Sophie sighed. Keefe glanced at her and then at Kesler. He looked like he really wanted to say something, and looked ready to burst. "If Dex knows about Juline, Sophie should know about Edaline." Kesler quickly blurted out.

A queasy feeling was starting to set in Keefe's stomach. He looked around and realized that it was Sophie's emotions. He took off her glove and started sending blue breezes into her mind. "What? What happened with Edaline? Why won't anyone tell me?" She looked close to yelling.

Alden sighed. "Fine. Sophie, come to my office." Sophie shook her head. "If we all know about Juline, I think everyone deserves to know about whatever is happening with Edaline. Is she hurt?"

Alden sighed again. "Fine." He directed his attention to Keefe, and transmitted If she gets upset... Keefe gave a small nod that no one seemed to notice except Sophie. She looked between Alden and Keefe and narrowed her eyes but didn't press it.

Alden looked down. "Edaline is missing, too."
