Chapter 11
Tam's POV
"Okay, wait. There could have been tons of connections and you choose the color of the sky? Wouldn't that just be a coincidence?" Tam asked Sophie, confused.
Sophie nodded in understanding. "Usually I would agree with you, but I've never seen the sky that color before. It looked like the sky was on fire! Also, the only two times I've ever seen it, those weird figures have been there. It can't be a coincidence," Sophie said eagerly.
The door suddenly opened and Keefe peeked his head in. "What's up? Foster. Bangs Boy," Keefe said casually nodding to each of them in return. Sophie smiled at him and patted the space on the floor next to her.
Keefe sat down. "What are you guys talking about?" Sophie pointed to her memory log. "The sky and the figures. I don't think it's a coincidence, do you? I wonder if Sir Astin knows if we can predict what color the sky will be," Sophie wondered aloud.
Keefe shrugged. "We can ask. But maybe we should see if the figures show up again. If they do, and if it is an auburn sky, then we can ask if there's a connection. Do you think we should tell someone about the figures?" Keefe asked.
"I don't know. I think we should find out more first. My dream could just be a dream. It's weirdly specific, but you're right, we should check one more time if the figures show up. I guess we can check tonight since we're leaving tonight," Sophie said pulling at an eyelash. Keefe grabbed her hand to stop her from getting another but quickly let go when he saw Tam staring at them with an amused smile.
Seriously, when will they tell each other how much they like each other? Even Keefe knows that Sophie likes him and Sophie doesn't. Oh. Tam suddenly realized something. That's why Keefe complains about being an empath sometimes. He knows that Sophie likes him, so whenever she thinks she likes Fitz, Keefe knows that he can't say anything. Because emotions can change, just like he said.
Tam felt a twinge of sympathy for the annoying boy, but he quickly shoved it away when he saw Keefe glaring at him. Right. Tam thought. I can't have any emotions around Keefe. Even if I feel bad for him. He hates sympathy.
Tam cleared his throat. "Okay, so should we tell the others about the sky thing?" he asked them. Sophie hesitated. "I don't know. If it does turn out to be something bad, I don't want to worry them," she said. Tam was confused. "But you told me."
Sophie nodded. "That's because you don't really worry much. Unless it's about Linh, you're kind of a no-emotions person," she said. Keefe snorted. Sophie looked at him and he shrugged innocently.
"Hey, Maruca's been kind of quiet. She didn't even join in the Making Fun of Sophie game. I think she's upset." Tam said. Sophie nodded. "Yeah, that was weird. Not the part about not making fun of me, but you're right, she has been kind of quiet."
She shrugged. "I'll go talk to her," she stood up and left the room, leaving Tam with Keefe. "So... when will you tell her you like her?" Tam asked Keefe. Keefe rolled his eyes. "When she realizes that she likes me." Keefe looked up in horror that he had told Tam that. "It's okay," Tam assured him. "I already figured it out. It must be really hard for you to know that."
Keefe stared at him for a little then shrugged. "Yeah, a little. A lot. Okay, it really sucks." He shrugged. "I can live with it. I think she's still focused on Fitz, though. And she seems to be heading towards you. I'm not jealous or anything," Keefe said quickly, probably misinterpreting Tam's emotions. "I want her to be happy, really. It's just kind of weird, I guess." He shrugged.
Tam sat stunned for a few seconds. "Okay, I hope you know that I still don't like you, but I'm gonna say this. I met Sophie before any of you guys. She met me before Linh. I shadow whispered to her and she transmitted so that we could talk in lessons at Exillium. I hate saying this because it sounds weird and gross, but we have this connection. If it hadn't been for her, we would still be at Exillium. I hated it there. So I'm really thankful for her. But I swear, we do not think of each other that way. You're an empath. You know I'm telling the truth. She's kind of like another sister to me. A little less annoying than Linh, but she's a really good friend. She made me feel like I belonged somewhere. Feel her emotions on the way downstairs. I promise you won't feel anything towards me. But to summarize? I still don't like you."
Keefe grinned. "You know what, Bangs Boy? I still don't like you either. Thanks, though. It did help."
They sat in comfortable silence for a little, until Keefe decided to go downstairs. Tam knew what he was going to do. He was going to do what he had suggested and feel Sophie's emotions. Tam gave a small smile. It was nice being alone for a while. Well, it was until Linh peeked her head in.
"I'm guessing there's a reason for why Keefe grinned like he'd discovered the best thing in the Lost Cities when he bumped Sophie's arm?" She laughed and sat down next to Tam.
"I guess it means that he knows that Sophie doesn't like me. He was kind of worried, so I let him know that she's like a less annoying sister to me," he grinned at Linh playfully.
"Awwww, are you guys friends now? That's so sweet!" Linh gushed. Tam quickly shook his head. "Oh, definitely no. The dislike feeling is still mutual, don't worry," he said. Linh rolled her eyes. "Come on, shadow boy. Let's go downstairs." Tam scowled. "Okay, so I'm Bangs Boy and shadow boy now?" Linh laughed. Tam was lucky to have a sister. A twin. He truly loved her.
