The wind had come up and it was actually quite chilly. We'd had dinner, an ancient recipe gleaned from Justine's pioneer grandparents who had crossed the plains eating nothing but beans and turnips or some such. She'd prepared the majority of it at home and then brought it to be heated while she put the finishing touches on Dutch oven peach cobbler, and yeast-less biscuits.
The talk was so enlivening. Everybody had camping experiences--- except me--- honestly. I was surprised Ben and Jeff and Mutt were able to corroborate as many cool stories as they did, but it lasted well into the night. Lance and I were miserably left out. Or not so miserably--- it was all fascinating. Aubrey had gotten her second wind and was easily telling us about bear encounters, hunting camps in Montana and Idaho, Alaska, fishing expeditions, and homemade rope swings over the pond.
The kids were in their element, all of them racing around till they basically dropped. They had a tent with Abbie as tonight was too special, and I'd arranged for peace and quiet. And Lance and his kids had their own tent too.
Our mystery guest turned out to be a Southern California member of Lance's home ward's Bishopric. He is a single guy, and well-beloved in his ward, and he struggles with same sex attraction. He doesn't act on it, and he says it kills him some days--to know one thing in his head, and one in his heart, but he has a current temple recommend, and he attends regularly, and keeps the commandments. He is a public speaker for the gay community in the church and is very popular. I don't even recall how I lucked onto his phone number, and how it turned out he was available to come with us, but he was, and so far, nobody knew that he was any of those things except me. His name is Marlon Hughes.
He had his own tent too.
The wee hours approached and another fire had been built away from the kid's tents. So away from Aubrey and me too. I helped her crawl into bed, a real bed, all made up comfortably with normal pillows and blankets. It was warm enough, so we had the skylight on the tent open so we could see the stars without getting eaten by mosquitos.
"I'm shocked not one kid is crying." Aubrey said as she snuggled on her side, rubbing her backside against me trying to find the right place to be comfortable.
"They'll be old pros by morning. Nothing to worry about."
"This is amazing, Rafe. I am so grateful you thought of it, and are giving us this experience. I can hardly believe how rugged and raw and appealing it all is. We are so close to civilization and yet it feels like we are out in the middle of nowhere."
I grunted, feeling her up as was my way.
"What is on the agenda for tomorrow?"
"Some are going snorkeling, some are hiking, you can't go too close to the lighthouse, the fog horn if blasted will cause permanent hearing damage. But there's a visitors center, and wildflower viewing, we can go bird watching, and picnic on the other side of the island, there's a pretty place to watch the sea lions. Otherwise, just chillaxe." I decided to pursue the passionate kissing, unrestrained due to the moral values that had kept us apart in the beginning. Aubrey can't resist me. I love that about her. I am her first and only lover, so everything about me is only hers, and she is only mine. We waited to have sexual relations till marriage and I've never regretted it. It was shocking, due to my early life promiscuity, but I am thankful my girl could see through youthful defiance to the man I have become, and forgive me my immoral behavior.
I maneuvered her to accommodate me, stroking her body in all the right ways to give her pleasure, and she responded, like she always did--- pure, without comparison, without holding back. Love flared like lightning, burning brilliantly as we soared above the clouds, and rested on eagle's wings. How I love my woman... there's nothing like this love, nothing.
