"I can't believe it! A whole three weeks to do nothing. I can finally catch up on my late assignments," Iris said as they walked away from their third period class.
"Aren't you in that special program too? I thought you weren't allowed to get behind?"
"It's only for when I wasn't here and the teacher is giving me time. Now, I have more time so it doesn't even matter."
Sunny nodded along in agreement. Since this new 'virus' was causing a scare in the opposite side of the world, they were allowed a three-week break. Sunny didn't want to say bye to her friends for that long but she was ready for an early break. It was like spring break all over again.
Except it lasted longer than spring break. They were in their second month of the break when Sunny decided to send Iris a text along with her friends. Sunny just wanted to do a check-up on them as she heard that everyone was struggling mentally. Even if they didn't meet in person, she would want to remain the friend that was there for them.
So she sent everyone the same text. Hey, I just wanted to check in on you. How have you been?
Most of her friends replied quickly and they started talking but Iris took a day or two. When she did reply it was nothing more than I'm fine, thanks for checking up on me! before her replies went silent. After that, Sunny didn't expect anything more from Iris.
Iris just wasn't the friend to stay in contact with if you didn't see each other. Sunny was only a school friend and would remain just that. She wasn't made to be more than that, she didn't know how to be social enough for that.
So, instead of wondering if she should try talking to Iris more, she let Iris go. All the fun times they had in class, their short walks from their second to third period, their deep conversation they had and getting the other out of boredom, she let go.
She didn't forget their friendship, she couldn't, but it was a nice one while it lasted. She had let friends go before but there was something that made Sunny sadder about letting Iris go.
Sunny would find out later just why she felt different about this particular relationship.
