Descriptions
I've been noticing this a lot lately and it's not just with AOT fanfics, but it's like everywhere and it's really annoying. Why, the actual, hell, do people, not, put, a description, for their story?! *grinds teeth*
I'm looking through stories I might possible want to read and I find a lot of this:
a) why don't you read to find out?
b) (insert good description here)
It's either one of those or they're just plain honest by saying: I suck at writing good descriptions.
Well it doesn't matter if you suck you have to give it your best shot! When I see those kinds of descriptions it tells me that you're not a dedicated writer and probably don't care very much about your story, which you probably do and are just giving off the wrong message. If you don't care enough to write a good description, then how do I know that you actually try in your book?
Basically: just don't do it. Put a description so that I can see what the book is about before I start reading otherwise I'll think you're a lazy ass who can't write and you'll have automatically turned off several potential readers.
I'm gonna be very honest with you and I'm gonna tell you that I have confidence in my description writing skills. Like, I enjoy writing descriptions because they're a literary challenge that I don't get to do very often (unless it's like your job but if it is I want your job).
Though writing a good description is hard, because it's like you've got to know exactly where your story's going to write a good one which has never been a problem for me because I don't usually start a story unless I've worked out absolutely everything about it.
My story writing process is backwards. I think up an amazing scene that was probably inspired by my sleep-drunk mind at 3 in the morning or by a song. The scene in my mind then gets put into some context that I've magically created and then I think of how their whole predicament is going to end usually with some very touching scene or epic battle or quite possibly with a cliff hanger. Cliff hangers are sometimes my favorite and sometimes they make me feel like throwing my phone across the room because I'm so annoyed. Rick Riordan is a great author if you like reading cliff hangers along with Veronica Roth. Go make yourself cry and fangirl over their books because they're amazing.
You know what's funny, Rick Riordan made me want to become an author because of his Percy Jackson books. I could relate to Percy so well that one day I was reading one of the books and I thought, I could've written this. Now we all know that I'm not as talented as Rick is, but I was thinking that these thoughts matched my own that I had on several occasions and that I literally could've written this. That's when I realized just how powerful I am. It was like one of those mind-blown moments that are just absolutely amazing.
Go take a hint from them; they have good description.
God I don't even know where the hell this rant went. See what happens when I rant about crap at one in the morning? I get off topic. Have a nice day/sweet dreams my lovelies!~ :)
