Erwin x Reader: Importance

~Erwin~

The stack of papers to my left made my headache worse, not to mention making it harder to focus on the sheet in front of me. The constant ringing of my work phone also added to my already stressful day.

As I was about to decline the call, there was a knock at my office door. Seconds pass when I didn't respond, the door opened to my wife. A soft, shy smile tugged at her lips at least that's what I think, my glimpse was too quick for me to really notice. I completely forgot I was working from home today. "Honey, you missed dinner," she says softly.

I didn't look up, my eyes scanned over important documents, her soft footsteps pattered on the hardwood until I saw her shadow peer over my desk. "No now (Y/N), I have all these papers to go through," I didn't necessarily mean for it to come out cold but I've been growing more annoyed by the hour.

"I-I know my love, but you should take a break, you haven't eaten-" She set a plate down right on top of the paper, and I lost it. With my hands on the sheet, I yanked it out from under the plate causing the dish to flip over and all the food spilled over onto my desk.

"Shit!" I snap.

(Y/N) gasped and jumped to help, but I rushed around ready to move the important papers so they wouldn't get ruined. "I'm so sorry Erw-"

"Just get out, take this, and get the hell out," I snap.

"But- I wanted to gi-"

I let out a sigh and finally turned to look at her, "(Y/N) I have to finish these by Monday, I'll be even more behind now with this fucking mess, whatever it is can wait, please leave,"

~(Y/N)~

I stood there with the now empty plate in my hand. My husband's back was facing me again as he cleaned up the mess by himself. My free hand was still behind my back hiding the present I wanted to give him for our 5-year wedding anniversary. There was a knot in my throat as my eyes grew hot with tears building at the brim. He's never been this rude to me before, even when stressed. I let out a quivered sigh and left as he asked. Once the door was shut I let the tears fall, I leaned against the door sobbing quietly, part of me wondered if he'd even come after me if he heard.

After a couple of minutes of waiting to see if he would, I left for the kitchen where I cleaned the empty but messy plate. I ate dinner alone, then retired to our room for the night. It wasn't the first time I had gone to bed without him, but it was early. I wasn't really in the mood to wait for him, he'd probably still be cranky. He might not even come to bed at all because of the mess.

Climbing under the covers, I hid my face in the blanket, as more tears fell from my eyes. The room slowly grew dark as the day was coming to an end. Eventually, I fell asleep and don't remember him coming to bed at all that night.

✧✧✧✧✧

The next morning came and I woke up alone, Erwin's side hadn't been touched. After getting ready for work, I stepped out into the kitchen, everything was quiet. Turning I head towards Erwin's office to find it also empty. He must be in the office today.

I really was hoping he'd stay home today because I didn't want to have to see him at work today. Even though I worked in a separate part of the building, that didn't stop us from running into each other.

At work, I headed straight for my office. I had a little extra time before meetings to get some makeup done, at my desk I pulled my compact mirror out and some materials to hide the redness under my eyes. But as I was starting to cover my face in makeup, my door flew open. My friend and colleague Hanji burst through. "Good morning!!!" she shouts. In one hand she had a tray with two drinks.

Walking up to my desk she sets my coffee down. "First meeting is in 15 minutes, your hubby will be leading it- hey what's up with your face?" she asks. After setting the tray down she leaned over my desk to examine my face closer. "Have you been crying? Your eyes are all puffy and gross." Thanks, Hanji just what I needed.

"Yeah," I said vaguely.

Now instead of the usual happy, crazy look she typically wore, Hanji's face turned to concern as she planted her butt on the edge of my desk. "What's wrong? Did Erwin hurt you? Do I need to beat a grown man today?" she asks.

I let out a sigh, I didn't want to talk about my personal life but at the same time maybe talking about it might make me feel better. "Erwin's just been really stressed lately from work, and last night I tried to surprise him with dinner and a gift. He made a mess and snapped at me," I explain.

Hanji let out a sigh while I continued doing my makeup, once I had finished I stood up, grabbed my drink, and walked with her to my door. Upon opening it, I found Levi standing just outside. "Oh! Hey Levi," I greet.

"Hello."

He started walking away, usually, he'd walk with us but he made a beeline for the conference room. Weird. Hanji and I eventually made it in there after Levi, taking a seat, I had Hanji on my right and Levi on my left. So far it was just the three of us until more employees entered leaving my husband last. When he walked in, our eyes met for mere seconds, I quickly averted my gaze.

As the meeting progressed, I forced myself to look at my husband. It was hard to stay focused because each time I looked at him I was reminded of the night before, his eyes and behavior so cold, so unloving. Halfway through the meeting though, I noticed Erwin getting a little unsettled when he looked my way. Then I saw Levi's hand clenching tightly on the table. I couldn't see the short man's expression but by the way his knuckles were turning white, I could tell he was getting annoyed.

After the meeting, I wanted to talk to my wife and apologize for last night but she ran out of the room before I could get a chance. Levi stopped me from going after her by placing his hand on my chest and shoving me back. Hanji stood behind him with her arms crossed, they both looked disappointed. "What's going on guys?" I ask knowing full well why they were acting like this.

"(Y/N) told me about your fight last night, I get you've been stressed but you had no right to get mad at her," Hanji says.

"I know, I didn't mean for things to go down that way I want to go apologize to her now if you'll just-"

"Erwin, what day was it yesterday?" Levi asks. Confused by his question I watched as he rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"Thursday?" I answer unsure of my answer.

"You gotta be fucking kidding me...Erwin, it was your 5-year wedding anniversary- I'm not even married yet I still remembered you dumb fuck," Levi scolds.

My heart instantly sank to my stomach- or so it felt. Oh my god! How could I be so thoughtless? That's why she was being so persistent yesterday and dinner- "I'm such an idiot," I mutter.

"Yeah, no fucking kidding," Levi retorts.

"You gotta fix this Erwin, because she looked like she had been crying when I walked into her office this morning, she was putting makeup on to hide the redness under her eyes," Hanji explains.

I let out a sigh feeling terrible for my behavior, and the fact that I had to have my friends jerk my memory. "Look, give us what you have left of the documents, then go get your wife and head home early for the day, we'll take care of everything here," Levi says.

As much as I didn't want to leave them with all this work, I nodded my head, I had to make amends with my wife, I had treated her like garbage when all she wanted was my time and attention and to celebrate. I gave Levi and Hanji everything I had and walked out of the conference room, normally (Y/N) and I didn't leave until late at night some days, but this was important.

~(Y/N)~

In my office, I scrolled through emails finding nothing really to do in between meetings. Letting out a tired sigh, I pull out my phone to start scrolling through social media waiting for someone to send me something or until the next meeting starts. But as I opened an app, there was a knock at my door, and without warning, Erwin popped his head in. "Honey, come on we're leaving early for the day," he says with a gentle smile.

I would've refused him, but that damn smile of his always melted my heart. I put my phone away and stand from my desk. "What about all the other meetings we have today?" I ask, slowly I start to grab my purse.

"Hanji and Levi have everything handled,"

Hesitant, I was reminded of his cold demeanor from last night. "I don't know Erwin, you've been so stressed, I don't want you to miss out on your work if it's so important," I didn't mean for it to sound so cold but it came out that way.

Now entering my office fully, he shut the door before striding over to me. He cupped my face in his hands forcing me to look into those hypnotizingly blue eyes of his. "You're more important, like I said Levi and Hanji have it under control."

I let out another sigh and finally gave in by nodding my head while he still held my face. I still was standoffish but I was willing to give him a shot at making amends. Following him out of my office we made our way to the parking garage.

Our first stop was home so we could change into some casual attire, then Erwin took me out for brunch, but even before that he stopped at a grocery store where he picked up wine, chocolates, and flowers. "All for later," he says then pecked me on the lips.

After brunch we walked around the city checking out shops, anything I wanted he bought for me, even when I begged him not to. It made me happy he was going to such lengths to show he was sorry, but I wish it hadn't happened in the first place, not to mention it made me scared to show him my gift, but I knew he'd find out sooner or later.

Once we returned home, I sat myself down on the couch for a few. "I'll make us dinner tonight love, if you want you can pick out a movie,"

I hadn't realized how long we were out for but it was around that time we'd start making dinner as I checked my watch. "Sure, I'm gonna go change though," I say as I get back up and start heading for the bedroom. I changed into a simple nightgown, staring at myself in the mirror, I placed my hands over my stomach and pivoted slightly revealing the barely showing bump. Then hidden in the top drawer of our dresser was the gift I had for Erwin.

Reentering the living space, I peered into the kitchen watching Erwin in the middle of making dinner. I set the present beside me to keep it still semi-hidden. It didn't take Erwin long to be finished cooking, he was always good at cooking and was pretty efficient. He came into the living room with two plates.

I shifted slightly trying to get comfortable thinking he would sit right away, but after setting the plates down, he quickly headed back into the kitchen. When Erwin returned he had two wine glasses and the bottle of wine we got at the store in his hands.

As he sets the glasses down, I watch him pour one cup and then move to the next, but before he can fill mine, I place my hand over the top. "I can't," I mutter. His expression turned confused as he set the bottle on the coffee table.

He then reaches and wraps one arm around me. "Why what's wrong?" he asks softly.

I did my best to suppress the hurt I was feeling from last night, but I couldn't help when the tears started forming again. It was the first time he'd ever been so aggressive and upset with me and now he was looking at me so lovingly. "I'm so sorry about last night," I sob as I lean forward, I covered my face as the tears fell.

Rubbing circles along my back, I could feel my husband scoot closer. "Baby, look at me," he whispers. I couldn't at first, which forced him to grab my wrists and move my hands off of my face. "You have nothing to be sorry about, I was a complete jerk and shouldn't have spoken to you like that," he starts.

Sniffling, I grabbed a tissue to wipe the tears under my eyes. "But-"

"No buts, I mean it (Y/N) if I ever speak to you like that again please slap me or something, I had absolutely no right- especially on our anniversary, I am so sorry I forgot," he continues. I couldn't stop sniffling, his apology was so sweet that it made me cry more. "Honey," he says softly as his head tilts ever-so-slightly.

Finally, I turn away and grab the small present I had intended to give him last night. "I was trying to give you this last night with your dinner," I say softly, handing him the box I watch his shoulders sink.

"Baby...you didn't have to-"

I chuckle softly through my tears and say, "Just open it." With that, he pulled the ribbon and opened the box to reveal a pair of green baby booties. My husband's bright blue eyes brightened, his gaze then darted up to meet mine as I started laughing and hiding my face a bit.

"Are you- am I gonna be a dad?" he asks stumbling over his words. Laughing at his reaction I nod my head and not a second after I confirm it, he wraps me in his arms pulling me in for a tight hug. "Oh my god," he mutters.

"I'm only a few weeks along, so I don't want to say anything to anyone once I'm past 12 weeks," I explain.

Pulling away slightly from me, the blonde captures my lips in a passionately sweet kiss, his hands gently caressing my side sending chills down my spine. Sadly the kiss didn't last to long as Erwin went back to looking at his present. "I promise I'll never be like that with you ever again," he says.

I believed him, especially after all the effort he put into today to make up for yesterday. With that, we turned and began eating our delicious dinner, Erwin started listing off names and other things that we could plan later for our baby, but it melted my heart to see how excited he was to start this next chapter in our lives. He really understood the importance of everything I was trying to do, and if anything he's changed for the better now, and he never let himself get that stressed over work again.
