The earth and world wars

Screen Message: Of course some of you wonder how the world fully looks like. How the world around you is shaped. If you don't, then you're not to blame. You're still in the year 850 after all.

Eren: so... the whole world?

Levi: of course.

Armin: wooow! Eren, our dream will become true!

*planet Earth shown on screen*

Everyone: WHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAA!!

Eren: What the hell?!

Screen Message: this is planet earth. The place where all of you exist. You're probably wondering why is it round. Well that's because this is it's actual form. Humans see it flat because they are so small in size.

Eren: what are the blue stuff?

Screen Message: the blue stuff you see on planet earth is the oceans and seas. Those are the ones Armin fantasizes about.

*Everyone looks at Armin*

*flat labeled earth map is shown*

Screen Message: As you can see now, the world is flat. This is a flat map of the world that is easier to use than a globe. If you look closely at anything, you can see labels on them. These are the names of everything, well according to the humans of the future that is.

*arrow with "you are here" text appears on Germany.*

Screen Message: This arrow shows you your location on the map. You are located in Germany. Germany is a country formed in the 18th of January, 1871. I won't go into detail as to why it was formed and how, but I will explain the stuff that it was involved in.

Erwin: so this explains the history of the world from the perspective of a person in the future?

Screen Message: Yes, commander Erwin. I am from the year 2017.

Everyone: *gasps in shock*

Screen Message: Now I will begin explaining something called... war.

Screen Message: If titans do not exist in your world, humans would split into different ethnic, religious groups and tribes and fight each other for claiming land and resources. That's something natural. Us humans fight a lot. And as you can see in the world map, the world is split into 196 countries as of may 14th 2017. Taiwan is not considered an official country by many, which would bring the count down to 195 countries. Although Taiwan operates as an independent country, many countries (including the U.S.) do not officially recognize it as one. But let's just say it is for now. I'll explain stuff about Germany later.

Screen Message: I went off topic a little there. But I need to explain war. War happens when two different groups of humans, whether it be tribes, alliances, empires or countries, fight each other for resources or land domination. Or maybe because of major historical and political events that affect the whole country or tribe or whatever. Imagine two wall districts fighting each other but on a much larger scale. This is war. The Germany part comes later.

Eren: ...

Everyone: ...

Screen Message: If two countries fought each other, it is called a war. But what if an alliance between countries was formed and it fought with another alliance? That's where World War I comes in.

Eren: World War I?

Screen Message: World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars (even though it ended nothing), was a global war originating in Europe *Europe gets highlighted in red* that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history. Over nine million combatants and seven million civilians died as a result of the war.

Mikasa: OH MY GOD!

Armin: NO! IMPOSSIBLE!

Eren: THIS ISN'T TRUE!!

*colored live footage of world war 1 battles and arsenals are shown*

Levi: By the walls...

Sasha: *chokes on food*

Connie: *helps Sasha*

Screen Message: The war drew in all the world's economic great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the Russian Empire, the French Third Republic, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland) versus the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. Although Italy was a member of the Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary, it did not join the Central Powers, as Austria-Hungary had taken the offensive, against the terms of the alliance.[10] These alliances were reorganised and expanded as more nations entered the war: Italy, Japan and the United States joined the Allies, while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers. *each county is highlighted*

Eren: ...

Everyone: ... ... ... ... ...

Eren: But... what happened? What triggered the war?

Screen Message: Interesting Question. The trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. This set off a diplomatic crisis when Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia, and entangled international alliances formed over the previous decades were invoked. Within weeks, the major powers were at war and the conflict soon spread around the world.

Eren: and how did it all start?

Screen Message: On 28 July, the Austro-Hungarians declared war on Serbia. As Russia mobilised in support of Serbia, Germany invaded neutral Belgium and Luxembourg before moving towards France, leading the United Kingdom to declare war on Germany. After the German march on Paris was halted, what became known as the Western Front settled into a battle of attrition, with a trench line that changed little until 1917. On the Eastern Front, the Russian army was successful against the Austro-Hungarians, but the Germans stopped its invasion of East Prussia. In November 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers, opening fronts in the Caucasus, Mesopotamia and the Sinai. In 1915, Italy joined the Allies and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers; Romania joined the Allies in 1916, as did the United States in 1917.

Screen Message: The Russian government collapsed in March 1917, and a revolution in November followed by a further military defeat brought the Russians to terms with the Central Powers via the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, which granted the Germans a significant victory. After a stunning German offensive along the Western Front in the spring of 1918, the Allies rallied and drove back the Germans in a series of successful offensives. On 4 November 1918, the Austro-Hungarian empire agreed to an armistice, and Germany, which had its own trouble with revolutionaries, agreed to an armistice on 11 November 1918, ending the war in victory for the Allies.

Eren: This is getting tiring to read.

Screen Message: and it is even more tiring to type. ok. I think I can do something about that.

A voice speaks from speakers placed around in the theater.

???: uh, hello? Can you all hear me?

Eren: Yes! Are you the person who put us here?

???: Yes. My name is AwadaJ8. Call me that from now On. You can Call me J8 if you want.

Eren: Okay.

Awadaj8: Also I will stop boring you with just text and Map highlights. I've gotten my hands on some great footage. I'll show you.

(You just imagine animations and videos of WWI play on the scream as you read.)

Awadaj8: By the end of the war or soon after, the German Empire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist. National borders were redrawn, with several independent nations restored or created, and Germany's colonies were parceled out among the victors. During the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, the Big Four (Britain, France, the United States and Italy) imposed their terms in a series of treaties. The League of Nations was formed with the aim of preventing any repetition of such a conflict.

Eren: that's great.

Mikasa: What a relief.

Levi: Great.

Awadaj8: Unfortunately... this is nothing compared with... World War II.

Everyone: WHAAAAAAT?!

Eren: NO!

Armin: WHY?!

Levi: HELL NO!!

Mikasa: NOT AGAIN!!!!

Awadaj8: World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's countries, including all of the great powers, eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust (in which approximately 11 million people were killed) and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centres (in which approximately one million were killed, and which included the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), it resulted in an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history.

Eren: *falls on his knees and cries*

Mikasa: *goes to comfort Eren*

Eren: *gets up* who... WHO WAS THE CAUSE OF ALL THIS?!

AwadaJ8: Germany.

Everyone: WHAAAAAAT?!

Eren: BUT HOW?! WHO?!

Mikasa: WHY?!

Awadaj8: it was because of an evil tyrant dictator, Adolf Hitler. He leader of Nazi Germany.

Eren: ok... ? Continue.

Awadaj8: Ahem! Nazi Germany is the common English name for the period in German history from 1933 to 1945, when Germany was governed by a dictatorship under the control of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party (NSDAP). Under Hitler's rule, Germany was transformed into a fascist state in which the Nazi Party took totalitarian control over nearly all aspects of life. The official name of the state was Deutsches Reich from 1933 to 1943 and Großdeutsches Reich ("Greater German Reich") from 1943 to 1945.

Levi: O... Kay...?

AwadaJ8: Racism, especially antisemitism, was a central feature of the regime. The Germanic peoples (the Nordic race) were considered by the Nazis to be the purest branch of the Aryan race, and were therefore viewed as the master race. Millions of Jews and other peoples deemed undesirable by the state were murdered in the Holocaust. Opposition to Hitler's rule was ruthlessly suppressed. Members of the liberal, socialist, and communist opposition were killed, imprisoned, or exiled. The Christian churches were also oppressed, with many leaders imprisoned. Education focused on racial biology, population policy, and fitness for military service.

*photos and videos of the above are shown.*

Eren: I... I need some water. *goes get water.*

Levi: Get me some tea!

Eren: *get's tea for Levi along the way*

AwadaJ8: Beginning in the late 1930s, Nazi Germany made increasingly aggressive territorial demands, threatening war if they were not met. It seized Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938 and 1939. Hitler made a non-aggression pact with Joseph Stalin and invaded Poland in September 1939, launching World War II in Europe. In alliance with Italy and smaller Axis powers, Germany conquered most of Europe by 1940 and threatened Great Britain. Reichskommissariats took control of conquered areas, and a German administration was established in what was left of Poland. Jews and others deemed undesirable were imprisoned, murdered in Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps, or shot.

Mikasa: Oh no...

Hanji: Are we humans so cruel?

AwadaJ8: Don't worry. This was all put to an end. Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the tide gradually turned against the Nazis, who suffered major military defeats in 1943. Large-scale aerial bombing of Germany escalated in 1944, and the Axis powers were pushed back in Eastern and Southern Europe. Following the Allied invasion of France, Germany was conquered by the Soviet Union from the east and the other Allied powers from the west and capitulated within a year. Hitler's refusal to admit defeat led to massive destruction of German infrastructure and additional war-related deaths in the closing months of the war. The victorious Allies initiated a policy of denazification and put many of the surviving Nazi leadership on trial for war crimes at the Nuremberg trials.

Erwin: And... what happened after all of this? In Germany I mean.

AwadaJ8: The Nazi era continues to inform how Germans view themselves and their country. Virtually every family suffered losses during the war or has a story to tell. For many years Germans kept quiet about their experiences and felt a sense of communal guilt, even if they were not directly involved in war crimes. Once study of Nazi Germany was introduced into the school curriculum starting in the 1970s, people began researching the experiences of their family members. Study of the era and a willingness to critically examine its mistakes has led to the development of a strong democracy in today's Germany, but with lingering undercurrents of antisemitism and neo-Nazi thought.

Eren: What happened to Hitler?

AwadaJ8 In late 1942, German forces were defeated in the second battle of El Alamein, thwarting Hitler's plans to seize the Suez Canal and the Middle East. Overconfident in his own military expertise following the earlier victories in 1940, Hitler became distrustful of his Army High Command and began to interfere in military and tactical planning, with damaging consequences. In December 1942 and January 1943, Hitler's repeated refusal to allow their withdrawal at the Battle of Stalingrad led to the almost total destruction of the 6th Army. Over 200,000 Axis soldiers were killed and 235,000 were taken prisoner. Thereafter came a decisive strategic defeat at the Battle of Kursk. Hitler's military judgement became increasingly erratic, and Germany's military and economic position deteriorated, as did Hitler's health.

Eren: And then?

AwadaJ8: Between 1939 and 1945, there were many plans to assassinate Hitler, some of which proceeded to significant degrees. The most well known came from within Germany and was at least partly driven by the increasing prospect of a German defeat in the war. In July 1944, in the 20 July plot, part of Operation Valkyrie, Claus von Stauffenberg planted a bomb in one of Hitler's headquarters, the Wolf's Lair at Rastenburg. Hitler narrowly survived because staff officer Heinz Brandt moved the briefcase containing the bomb behind a leg of the heavy conference table, which deflected much of the blast. Later, Hitler ordered savage reprisals resulting in the execution of more than 4,900 people

Mikasa: My god...

Pixis: what cruelty...

AwadaJ8: By late 1944, both the Red Army and the Western Allies were advancing into Germany. Recognising the strength and determination of the Red Army, Hitler decided to use his remaining mobile reserves against the American and British troops, which he perceived as far weaker. On 16 December, he launched the Ardennes Offensive to incite disunity among the Western Allies and perhaps convince them to join his fight against the Soviets. The offensive failed after some temporary successes. With much of Germany in ruins in January 1945, Hitler spoke on the radio: "However grave as the crisis may be at this moment, it will, despite everything, be mastered by our unalterable will." Hitler's hope to negotiate peace with the United States and Britain was encouraged by the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on 12 April 1945, but contrary to his expectations, this caused no rift among the Allies. Acting on his view that Germany's military failures meant it had forfeited its right to survive as a nation, Hitler ordered the destruction of all German industrial infrastructure before it could fall into Allied hands. Minister for Armaments Albert Speer was entrusted with executing this scorched earth policy, but he secretly disobeyed the order.

Eren: and then?

AwadaJ8: I've stretched the story too much. But I'll say this. During a military conference on 22 April, Hitler asked about Steiner's offensive. He was told that the attack had not been launched and that the Soviets had entered Berlin. Hitler asked everyone except Wilhelm Keitel, Alfred Jodl, Hans Krebs, and Wilhelm Burgdorf to leave the room, then launched into a tirade against the treachery and incompetence of his commanders, culminating in his declaration-for the first time-that "everything was lost". He announced that he would stay in Berlin until the end and then shoot himself.

Eren: oh... please continue. I don't know why, but I want to know.

AwadaJ8: It's basically your curiosity. Anyways, After midnight on 29 April, Hitler married Eva Braun in a small civil ceremony in the Führerbunker. After a wedding breakfast with his new wife, Hitler dictated his will to his secretary Traudl Junge. The event was witnessed and documents signed by Krebs, Burgdorf, Goebbels, and Bormann. Later that afternoon, Hitler was informed of the execution of Mussolini, which presumably increased his determination to avoid capture.

Reiner: Eva BRAUN?! Am I one of her ancestors?!?!?!

Bertholdt: Could be so.

AwadaJ8: Ahem...

Reiner: Oh... sorry. Please continue.

AwadaJ8: On 30 April 1945, when Soviet troops were within a block or two of the Reich Chancellery, Hitler shot himself and Braun bit into a cyanide capsule. Their bodies were carried outside to the bombed-out garden behind the Reich Chancellery, where they were placed in a bomb crater and doused with petrol. The corpses were set on fire as the Red Army shelling continued.

AwadaJ8: According to Kershaw, the corpses of Braun and Hitler were fully burned when the Red Army found them, and only a lower jaw with dental work could be identified as Hitler's remains.

Eren: Great.

AwadaJ8: and that was it for today! Why don't you all relax and go to the bathroom or eat something while we wait for the next thing? See you later.
