11- Bystander

--- two months later ---

Two months after Historia's coronation, the squad go to the farm where she was raised to go and visit the land. They watch her as she runs around chasing after all of the other children who live on the land.

"Well this isn't quite the Queen I was expecting" Armin says awkwardly.

"And it's only been two months since she was crowned. Seems like she's better suited to run an orphanage" Jean says as he watches her.

"Do you know what people are calling her?" Armin asks with a soft smile, "the Cattle-Farming Goddess. In a good way, of course".

"So we've finally got a goddess amongst us" Jean says sarcastically, "at this rate, no one will remember the chump who plugged up Trost, right?".

"One of the reasons Historia decided to become Queen was to do all this" Eren says, not trying to entertain Jean's immaturity, "taking care of the orphans and needy from the underground to the edge of the walls. Since he was raised underground, Captain Levi supported her too. When people need help, she said she'd come to their rescue, no matter where or who. That's what Historia wants to do".

"You three are slacking again" Historia says as she comes over to them, "it's getting dark, you know?".

She's becoming more and more like my Mother.

Jean says to himself as he, Eren and Armin all get to work.

Some Goddess.

Armin says as he looks down.

"I hear your hardening experiments are going well" Historia says as she walks next to Eren.

"Yeah. But if we don't hurry, they'll be back" Eren says as he looks ahead.

"What would you do?" Historia asks as she looks down, "if you met Reiner and Bertolt and had to face them again?".

"I'd have no other choice but to kill them" Eren says calmly.

"I hope we find out soon about the world and why it is the way it is" Historia says as she looks forward, "all that we've done, I don't want to regret any of it. Even the kids from the underground have been smiling lately. This can't have been the wrong choice".

"Yeah. You've done great" Eren compliments.

"That's not..." Historia says as she looks down.

"Thought you're the one who said humanity should get wiped out" Eren says as he looks at her.

"That was only because I got carried away" Historia says as she looks at him.

The two of them stop in their tracks as Mikasa stands in front of them.

"What?" Eren asks as he looks at Mikasa.

"Give me that" Mikasa says as she takes the clothing Eren was carrying from him, "Eren's tired from the experiments".

"That's true. Sorry, Mikasa" Historia says as she looks at Mikasa.

"Would you stop treating me like some old feeble man?" Eren asks as Mikasa starts to walk away.

--- the next day ---

The titan experiments start as they try out their new anti-titan weaponry that Evelyn designed and Eren helped put together by using his new hardening ability. This weaponry is constructed of Eren's hardening, a log attached to a piece of rope, and a target, more commonly known as a titan's favourite food, a human.

"That's it. Jam your head in" the soldier on the ground says as he watches the titan in front of him as he stands in the middle of Eren's hardening as the titan leans his head in, "now!".

The rope is cut with an axe as the chains are released and the log lands directly on the titan's nape.

"A direct hit on its nape!" Hange says excitedly, "this could be it" they say as they look down and see steam escaping the titan's nape, "we did it! That's a 12-metre crushed!".

"We did it!" Eren says as he and Evelyn fall to their knees.

"Hell yeah! With this, we can kill titans without a single soldier fighting!" Hange says as they celebrate, "we'll hack down the titans all day and night! Say hello to the executioner from Hell! We did it, Eren!" they says as they turn to look at Eren whose nose is bleeding badly as Evelyn offers him a handkerchief, "Eren?".

"He probably overused his titan powers" Evelyn says as she looks at Hange, "it's like how I lose consciousness for days on end after using my powers too much. All he's done are hardening experiments lately".

"Sorry Eren" Hange says as they look down.

"There's nothing to apologise for, Hange" Eren says as he looks up at Hange, "who gives a damn if Evelyn and I are tired? Let's hurry, make weapons, and keep going to Shiganshina".

--- that night ---

"We can win! We can beat them!" Marlow says confidently as he slams his drink down on the table, "with the new weapons, the titan's will crumble like paper!".

"You're so damn worked up!" Jean says as he sits across from Marlow, looking at him, "only you would be happy about becoming a Scout".

"That's right! Didn't Hitch try and stop you from joining?" Sasha asks as she eats some rice.

"Hitch? Why would she?" Marlow asks as he looks at Sasha.

"Why? Because you two are... you know?" Sasha says with a smirk.

"I don't follow, but Hitch told me off, saying I wasn't cut out for it and not to act cool" Marlow says as he remembers Hitch's words, "that if I stayed in the Military Police, I could coast along life. I thought she was better than that, told her I was wrong about her".

"You shit" Jean curses as he looks aside.

"Marlow, are you stupid?" Armin asks as he looks at Marlow.

"He's a bowl cut imbecile" Sasha says as she continues to eat.

"Why? Marlow said nothing wrong" Eren says as he looks at Armin.

"Anyways, the only ones as worked up as you are the recruits with zero battle experience" Jean says as he looks at Marlow.

"Woah, woah. Do you think you're some veteran hero now?" someone asks from the table behind them.

"Compared to you, I am" Jean says as he looks back at the man.

"How rude. Weren't we in the 104th together?" the boy asks as he stands up from his table, "besides, we're not the only ones. Everyone in the walls is pumped up by the idea of retaking Wall Maria".

"Is that so?" Jean asks as he looks up at the boy.

"Still you do all seem quite different now" the boy says as he looks at them all, "it's your faces, I guess. What exactly happened?".

"You want to know?" Jean says as they all look at each other.

"No. I think I'll ask later" the boy says, taken aback by them all.

"I'm out of here. See you later" Conny says as he stands up.

"So soon?" Sasha asks as she looks at him.

"Tomorrow's a prep day, so I'm heading to my village in the morning" Conny says as he looks at Sasha, "might find out something new there".

"Turning Conny's Mum back to normal isn't impossible, right?" Sasha asks as she looks at Armin.

"Yeah. If our understanding of titans keeps on improving, one day..." Armin says as he looks down.

"A nightmare, huh?" Eren asks as he remembers the conversation between Bertolt and Ymir, "with all that's happened, it's been so vague. But who exactly are we fighting against? That is, are titans just people being tormented by some nightmare? For a time, I was just one of those titans".

"Eren!" Mikasa shouts, snapping Eren out his own thoughts, "you still have bread and soup still. Save talking for after you've eaten".

"Right" Eren says as he looks down, "sorry, Mikasa".

"For crying out loud, Eren" Jean says as he looks over at Eren, "I swear that's all you do lately, mumbling shit to yourself. When you should be trying to remember that one guy. You saw, right? In that cavern when those memories came back. That guy in the Scouts who you think met your Dad".

"Yeah. That day, I'm pretty sure he was with my Dad" Eren says as he takes a sip of his drink, "he's got to know something. The thing is, I feel like I've seen this guy somewhere before".

"You mean not Doctor Jaeger, but you, yourself?" Armin asks as he looks at Eren.

"I think so" Eren says as he holds his head.

"Smack you head and see if you remember" Sasha says as she looks at Eren.

"That's right, twerp" Jean says as he agrees with Sasha's method, "you might remember if you stopped holding hands with Historia for once. Get a head-butt from the commandment".

"If that helped me remember, I'd-" Eren says as he looks at Jean just as he remembers where he saw that man in his Father's memories, "the Cadet Corps commandant" Eren says as he stands up, "Keith Shadis!".

--- the next day ---

"Before Erwin, he was the 12th Commander of the Scout Regiment" Hange explains as she, Evelyn, Levi and the rest of their squad ride on their horses, "it's been a long while since I've seen him".

The group make it to the training ground for the Cadet Corps as Evelyn and Eren go on ahead since this is their Father's memories.

"Commandant Shadis" Evelyn says as she and Eren walk to up to Keith.

"Is that you, Evelyn Jaeger?" Shadis asks as he turns his head, only to see Evelyn, Eren and the rest of the squad stood behind him.

They make it into a hut as they all sit down around a large table.

"What's the matter, Blause? Not sitting down?" Shadis asks as he looks at Sasha.

"No! I'm quite fine standing here!" Sasha yells as she stands straight and salutes.

"If I recall, back in the day, I always used to bring you in here to chew you out" Shadis says as he recalls on his memories of training them, "and it's only been a handful of months. I hardly recognise you all anymore. Especially the three of you, Evelyn, Levi, Hange... you've all changed the most".

"Commander Shadis, rather, Commandant... will preparations to retake Wall Maria underway, perhaps you can guess what brings us here today" Evelyn says as she looks at Shadis.

"Evelyn, you resemble your Father so much. Eren, you resemble your Mother so much" Shadis says as he looks at the two of them, "however, each of your resemble your other parent in some way. Evelyn, you have your Mother's personality. Eren, you have your Father's eyes".

"Tell us about him! Everything you know!" Eren says as he stands up.

"I know nothing in the grand scheme of things" Shadis says as he looks down, "however, I can tell you a story utterly useless to humanity. The story of my past as a mere bystander".

--- Shadis' past ---

Twenty years ago. Wall Maria. In front of the gates of Shiganshina, he was there. A small girl with him too.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" a soldier asks as he confronts Grisha, "how did you get past the wall?".

"What are you all doing outside the wall?" Grisha asks as he looks at the man, "don't tell me, you're fighting?".

Was it the truth or a lie? He couldn't remember why he was outside of the walls. All of his memories had been lost. All that he had come with, was you Evelyn, his daughter. All he knew was that his name was Grisha Jaeger, and you were his daughter, Evelyn Jaeger.

"Who knew it was a crime to go into titan territory without permission?" Hannes asks as he comes over to Grisha and Evelyn's cell, "I thought only you Scouts were dumb enough to go outside the walls".

"Isn't there a law that jails idiots who drink on duty, Hannes?" the man guarding the two of them asks as he looks at Hannes.

"Anyways, it's not like the two of them hurt anyone, so let's not report it, alright?" Hanne says as he looks at the man.

"Yeah" the man says as he looks at Grisha.

Grisha and Evelyn are let out of their cell as the man leads them up to a turret overlooking Shiganshina.

"What are you going to do now, Grisha Jaeger?" the man asks as he looks at Grisha.

"I remember something other than my own name and my daughter's name" Grisha says as he picks up Evelyn, "I'm a doctor, and my daughter is one as well, but she can fight better than she can treat people. Introduce me to a hospital and I should be of some help. As for my daughter, allow her to grow up with me and then allow her to help you fight. Also, do you think you could teach me? About this world, about the Scouts, about all of you. That way, I can teach Evelyn".

He truly knew nothing at all, and neither did you, Evelyn. Not about this world or anything.

"I see" Grisha says as he watches Evelyn eat some food, "although there's economic inequality, there's peace within the walls. At the least, you don't have to live in constant fear of titans. That's good".

"That's good, huh?" the man questions as he looks at Grisha, "you're one of them? Within these cramped walls, as long as there's food and alcohol, some think that's good enough. Not once have they stopped to think how wide the world might be".

"Is that why you venture outside of the walls?" Grisha asks as he looks at the man, "is that what Scouts do?".

"That's right. Does it seem foolish?" the man asks with a slight smirk.

"Not at all. The Scouts are wiser and braver than anyone within the walls" Grisha says confidently, "your existence signifies the freedom in our souls. You're the pride of humanity".

"Come on, Keith" one of the waitresses says as she comes over, "recruiting for the Scouts again, are we?".

"Not this time Carla. I'm just-" Keith says as he looks at Carla.

"Oh no. I'd never be suited for that kind of work" Grisha says as he looks at Carla, "my daughter on the other hand is a fighter. Maybe one day when she's older, she can join the Scout regiment. Being a Scout takes someone special, and my daughter is special".

"Oh, is that right?" Carla asks as she looks at Evelyn, "but this little one is far too cute to become a fighter. She looks more suited to be a teacher" she says as she walks away.

You had to be special. That was the first time anyone told me that. It's true. Inside the walls was far too cramped for me. If only I was Commander, I'd show the results people wanted to see. These idiots with their tiny brains... I'd accomplish so much, even they'd understand. And then everyone would have to acknowledge me.

"Grisha! Carla caught the plague going around! Can you help her?" Keith asks as he barges into Grisha's makeshift hospital.

"Please put her in the rear bed!" Evelyn says as she walks over, pointing to the bed.

"Are you even old enough to be doing this?" Keith asks as he lays Carla down on the bed.

"Evelyn is quite smart enough to be doing this kind of thing at the age of seven" Grisha says as he comes over.

"Doctor Jaeger. My parents have it too" Carla says as she holds onto Grisha's arm.

"Don't worry. Evelyn and I will save everyone" Grisha says with a smile.

And as he said they would, Evelyn and Grisha cured the plague that was going around. Evelyn had caught it too, but she pushed through for the better of other people. Soon after the plague was over, I was appointed the new Commander of the Scout Regiment. And at that time, Grisha and Carla had married. Three years later, Evelyn, you became an official member of the Scouts at only 10 years old after training for three years. But due to the way that the missions had been going and how many lives were lost, people start to look at Erwin to be the new Commander, as he was the Scouts' golden boy. And because no one on his squad had died. Someone special... a chosen one...

The march is stopped as Keith spots Carla in the crowd holding Eren, she and Grisha's new child, Evelyn's brother.

"Evelyn, I'll take your horse and your kit back to headquarters" Erwin says as Evelyn jumps off of her horse, "I'll report to the Commander that you took an early leave from your duty as well".

"Thanks Captain" Evelyn says as she abandons all of her gear.

"Carla. Who's this child?" Keith asks as he walks over to Carla.

"Eren. He's our boy" Carla says as she looks at Keith, "I guess Evelyn never told you".

"I'm sorry Commander Shadis but it completely skipped my mind" Evelyn says as she walks over.

"Evelyn, how was work?" Carla asks as she looks at Evelyn.

"It wasn't too bad. I think I killed like five titans" Evelyn says as she takes Eren from Carla's arms, "anyways, how's my beautiful baby brother doing?".

"My husband worried about you" Carla says as she looks at Keith.

"Yeah, I'm sorry" Shadis says as Eren starts to pull on Evelyn's hair.

"Do you intent on keeping this up until you die?" Carla asks as she looks down.

"Do you know why people live and die without doing a damn thing?" Keith asks as he leans over Carla, "it's because they lack imagination. Their whole lives, for nothing! They're not ashamed of a life that produces nothing but shit! They can't accomplish greatness, no! They can't even understand it! Not even the half of it! So a girl who flirts with every single man in sight, good for absolutely nothing apart from pouring drinks, will never".

That's right. Normal people accomplish nothing.

"Stay away from my Mother, Commander Shadis!" Evelyn says as she pushes him away.

"I'm okay, Evelyn" Carla says as the two of them look at each other.

Special people do exist. A girl who became a fighter at a young age. This just means I'm not one of them. Why did I not realise that simple fact? On that day when Shiganshina fell, I was pushed down by many people who panicked in Trost District. And then I saw your Father. But I know now, it was his fault.

Evelyn and Grisha walk back from the chapel as they find Keith. Evelyn looks around at all of the refugees from Wall Maria when she spots Eren laid down next to Armin and Mikasa who are both sound asleep. Evelyn walks over as she picks up her brother. Grisha and Evelyn move away from the rest of the refugees, taking Eren with them.

"Eren. Wake up, Eren. Was your Mother not with you?" Grisha asks as Evelyn and Grisha kneel down with Eren in their arms.

"Father..." Evelyn says as she looks down, "Mother was killed by a titan. By... by..." Evelyn says as she starts to break down.

"Dad" Eren says as he starts to wake up, spotting Evelyn, "Evelyn!" Eren yells as he wraps his arms around her and hugs her tightly, "I thought you died. A titan ate you".

"I cut myself free, Eren" Evelyn says with a smile as she hugs him back.

With that, your Father took the two of you to a mountain, and there, I think he did whatever he did to make the two of you the way you are. Eren, you gained titan powers. Evelyn, you lost all of your memories. There I found you asleep, Eren. Evelyn, you were unconscious and you weren't waking up. I returned Eren to the refugee camp and Evelyn, you were taken to a hospital within Wall Rose where you were heavily guarded. That is everything I know.

--- present time ---

"So, that's it?" Eren says as he looks at Shadis.

"Now we know the real reason you resigned" Hange says as they look at Shadis, "not to atone for the soldiers you killed, but because you realised you were never special. That's the childish reason you're here".

"Quit it, Hange" Levi says as he looks at Hange.

"Screw your inferiority complex. Don't run from reality" Hange says as they scowl at Keith, "isn't that what vowing to give your hearts to humanity was all about?".

"Please stop, Hange" Evelyn says as she grabs Hange's coat, "please just stop all of this".

Evelyn stands up from the table as she runs outside. Eren gets up as he goes after her, everyone following the two of them.

"Evelyn, wait!" Eren says as he sees Evelyn get onto Kanmori.

"I'm not your sister, Eren" Evelyn says as she looks down, "I'm just some girl from a place outside the walls that can't remember a single thing about her life. I come from somewhere where I was raised to be a warrior, and Father and I got lost, losing all our memories. You're my half-brother, Mother isn't even my real Mother".

"Evelyn, get off the horse right now!" Levi yells.

"I don't even know who I am anymore, Levi" Evelyn says as she looks at Levi, "how can you even say you want to marry someone who doesn't even understand why they're alive?".

And with that, Evelyn sets off on Kanmori, as quick as he can carry her away.
