Chapter 2 'Isn't he so grateful?' (Edited)

Lilith'S POV

I was sweetly awoken by my melodies alarm clock note the sarcasm. I grunted in agitation and switched it off. I turned around, only to find that my bed was vacant. Getting up, I scouted around but there was no sign of that devil. That idiot fled without even notifying me, wasn't he so grateful?!

I sighed, sauntering to the washroom for getting ready. Once I was dressed up, I prepared breakfast for myself which consisted of cereal because I was unduly sluggish to make anything and of course I made coffee as well, I swear my blood contains coffee rather than hemoglobin.

Perching my car in the office's parking lot, I got out of it and check my watch. I was pretty early today as I wanted to confront Mr. Mercer about why he left without even informing him.

I stepped inside the elevator and pressed the button. Soon I reached the 22nd floor and was striding towards Mr. Mercer's cabin where I didn't usually come.

I entered the room without even knocking because currently, I was way too vastly agitated to care about my manners.

Like always Mr. Mercer was sitting on his chair, typing away on his laptop. He glanced up at me with his infamous icy glare which didn't scare me even for a bit because trust me it was nothing in front of my mother's glare and I grew up seeing that glare.

I walked up to his desk, maintaining our eye contact.

'You know, a normal thanks would have been sufficient, and also does inform me before leaving would have killed you?!' I chided with crossed arms and scowled at him. A composed expression was formulated on his face as he shut his laptop then leaned back on his chair.

"You will be given extra salary this month for what you did last night and also keep your mouth shut about that incident," He deflected with a sigh. I rolled my eyes and shook my head at the lack of his gratitude

"You know what? It was my fault to ever anticipate any gratitude from your presumptuous ass!" I derided and he stood up then placed his both hands on the desktop with a loud thud and inclined forward.

"Ms. Valentine I would appreciate it if you would maintain your obnoxious behavior. Also, I didn't ask you to save me, did I? So why should I be appreciative to you?" he fumed while shooting daggers at me.

"Yeah, whatever!" I scoffed and rolled my eyes. I realized that it was a blunder to come here, he was gonna neither apologize nor he would say thanks. Also after what happened yesterday, he still might not be okay presently, so I didn't argue further and turned around then departed his cabin and started to amble towards mine.

It was 5 p.m. right now but I still had half an hour left, even after finishing my work. I packed my stuff except for the laptop, thinking about doing my house hunting right now as I had some free time left.

As I was surveying for houses through a website, I heard a knock on the door. I tsked in agitation as I wasn't in the mood of having any human interaction currently but then again, I never liked human interaction anyway.

"Come in," I articulated listlessly and went on with my hunting, not bothering to see who was it. I heeded someone getting inside and closing the door then cleared their throat, I looked up to find it was Mr. Mercer. I grumbled, seeing him, and stood up then crossed my arms

"How can I help you, Mr. Mercer?" I ridiculed, my lips formed in a beaming smile. He scratched the back of his neck while peeking around uneasily.

"Umm.....I wanted to talk to you" he paused and took a deep breath then continued "about last night" he asserted tentatively, evading any eye contact and I sighed, feeling slightly sorry for Mr. Mercer due to last night's incident. I slowly ambled towards him and stood in front of him, still maintaining an adequate amount of distance between us.

"Yeah, sure! Go ahead but you know you don't have to if you aren't comfortable." I avowed with a small smile and he stared at me with a stunned utterance as this was the first time I ever spoke to anyone nicely, especially with him.

Usually, I retained a resting bitch face because being a solely brusque person, I wasn't fond of conversing with anyone except for my best friends. That's why I didn't have any pals in the office because I tried to keep my relationship with them as professional as I could.

But recalling yesterday's occurrence had arisen minor compassion in my heart for Mr. Mercer. He cleared his throat after recovering from his little trauma and uttered.

"Thanks for saving me last night. I know today morning my behavior wasn't acceptable as I should have been grateful for your kind gesture, rather than being-" he was about to say more but I had cut him off

"Rather than being an ass?" I interjected and he cackled, nodding his head. Now, this was my time to be surprised because this is the first time I saw him laughing. I rolled my eyes with a smile and he continued.

"I was going to say rude but that word also goes with it. But everything aside, I would be grateful if you would keep it between us. I don't want it to be the talk of the office." He sighed and I nodded my head in understanding. I wasn't going to tell it to anyone anyway but this was the first time he was being cordial to me, so more reasons were added to why I would be keeping it a secret.

"Don't worry, I didn't even have the intention of telling it to someone because to say it to anyone, I had to interact with people and that's the last thing I wanna do" I shuddered at the thought of talking to the gossip girls in our office. He let out a breath of relief and then caught a glimpse of my laptop and scrunched his nose in confusion.

"You are shifting somewhere else? He questioned and I internally groaned as he was extending our conversation. As much as he was being amicable presently, I still abhorred the guy. And I already didn't like to chatter with anyone much.

Also, it was time for me to go home as it was now 5:30 p.m. and currently I just wished to get into my pajamas and roll all over my bed.

"Yes, actually my landlord is selling the house. So I have to move out within this week" I concurred with a sigh while leaning against my desktop. He nodded his head.

"But isn't it too short of a notice??" He pointed out and I shrugged while shaking my head in consensus, dying to cease this conversation.

"Yup! But the landlord is too old, so I didn't want to disturb him." I explained and rapidly closed my laptop then put it in the bag.

"Anyway, I gotta go now!! So I will see you tomorrow!" I promptly broke out of my cabin without even pausing to listen to his reply and got inside the elevator.

Soon I reached my car and slipped in.  Turning on the engine to drive my car, my mind pondered on what had been emerging for the last two days.

First, my boss was about to commit suicide and now abruptly he was behaving civilly to me. But the aspect that was upsetting me the most was, what was his reason behind attempting to commit suicide? The man had prestige, wealth, and even girls prowling around him. What else did he need? Or should I say lacks?

Those thoughts kept meandering on my mind while I proceeded to drive my way to my apartment.
